Second Life Destinations: Sommergewitter

Second Life Destinations

This week we are visiting Sommergewitter, a rustic German-language island that evokes the peace and beauty of a summer vacation home.

Created by SL and RL couple Seraph and Nida Nirvana, Sommergewitter is a German-language region composed of a rustic island. You can find a few farm animals wandering around and a few cozy homes in various corners. Seraph and Nida are one of the many Second Life love stories we are proud to share: they have both been Residents for over a decade and met in 2014. This eventually led to meeting up in the physical world and they are now in a long-distance relationship.

Seraph and Nida found that their familiarity with hanging out in a virtual realm was advantageous during the pandemic. They tell us “We spend our lives together in one or the other world, but we are together every day. The lockdown during the pandemic was no problem for us. Second Life has kept us close.”

Sommergewitter is based on a Hallig, which Seraph and Nida describe as “a type of small island typically found in the North Sea, and we structured it in such a way as if you were experiencing an oncoming summer storm as you settle into your vacation spot.”

Seraph and Nida built Sommergewitter in 2015, and it is of great sentimental importance to them. They explained to us that it has been maintained in its original form, like a moment frozen in time: “For about six years now we have tried to keep the region the way it was originally built. Mostly because that's where our relationship started but we also wanted to create a piece of continuity, something where people know their way around, even if they haven't been inworld for a long time.”

This power couple likes to keep busy. They also make machinima, such as Opera Ball in Vienna, and an ode to Tolkien's elven town of Rivendell is one of their latest projects. Kick off your summer vacation today by dancing in a summer thunderstorm at Sommergewitter.

Second Life Destinations: Silent Night

Second Life Destinations

This week we are transported to Silent Night, a glittering winter park available until January 10th.

Creator Nessa Nova of Unicorn Landscaping became a Resident about nine years ago and says that shortly after, “I rented a parcel and taught myself how to terraform. It is now my main business in Second Life.” As you wander from section to section, it is clear that a skilled hand created Silent Night, as it feels like a portrait of winter’s tranquility. Among the natural cycle of the seasons, winter is often seen as symbolizing the absence of life, but Silent Night is a reminder that stillness can be an opportunity to observe the vibrance around you.

This brumal landscape is the latest of Nova’s many creations in SL. It feels like a movie set, with visitors starting at a train station before following a path through the snow and glowing trees to a cafe, an ice skating rink, a carousel, and more. The atmosphere feels at once unique and familiar, like a communal reverie. Of her aptitude for creation, Nova informs us that “Coming from a family of painters and artists, the love of art is in my blood. Though instead of using an easel, paint and a brush, Second Life’s digital world is my atelier, and a [region] is my canvas. I start with an idea, a picture in my head, a colour or a feeling. Sometimes I progress as I go, but most of the time the world I intend to create already exists in my mind and I can mentally walk through it when I envision it.”

Nova explains that Silent Night, which is a satellite of the Lost Unicorn Group, is not just about celebrating the holidays but also “to remind us to remain hopeful in these dark times.” As a bonus level of interactivity, Nova adds: “Natalie Starlight, curator of the Lost Unicorn Gallery, is organizing a photography contest. Pictures of the Silent Night [region] can be submitted to the Lost Unicorn Flickr Gallery until January 3rd. After January 10th Silent Night will be gone forever. (Unless someone decides to buy the [region] as is.)”

This sounds like the perfect opportunity to show off all the free gifts you picked up at the Winter Shop & Hop. Throw on that new scarf and take in the wintry elegance of Silent Night before the snow melts!

Second Life Destinations: Shadezar

Second Life Destinations

Go back in time by visiting Shadezar, a fantasy roleplaying region inspired by the Mediterranean and Middle East.

A notecard given by creator Hera/Zee9 at the region’s entrance reads: “You may ask: Why am I in an attic, in a nursery? For as long as I can remember I have wanted to do a Neverland for adults. I even came up with a name for it, Neverworld X…” This starting point emphasizes the experience of being transported to a fantasy world, and has teleports to Vanesha, also referred to as Neverworld X, and Shadezar. You are instantly taken to a world of domed buildings and colorful tilework, surrounded by sand and sea that exudes a timeless sense of romance.

Shadezar is fantasy, sword and sorcery roleplay. It bears intricate recreations of architectural styles from different points in history such as Roman Antiquity and Ancient Persia. A notecard gives the following as story background: “This is the age of Iron, called the Formorian Age. There is only one great land mass called Gargantua, split into 5 main regions. The burning deserts of Samhara are located in the midlands. Shadezar  is the largest City in the Samhara Desert. Built upon a rocky outcrop, on a small island that splits the great Namhar river,  before it flows into the Sarazin Sea.”

The atmosphere of Shadezar is built upon respect for the thematic elements and roleplay experience. Please check out notecards from Hera for rules on the dress code and what type of weapons are allowed so that Residents can seamlessly engage with others and have fun. There is also information on the types of characters available (priests, merchants, beggars, etc.)  for those who are new. This exact location within the region has more information on the roleplay: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Cloud%20Lake/90/116/22

Hera has built and taken down many places in SL over the years; Shadezar is the result of combining old memories of virtual creations into one grand location.

Second Life Destinations: Seaclaid

Second Life Destinations

This week we have found ourselves at Seaclaid, a roleplaying region. This ferry station in an idyllic coastal town welcomes everyone with an undercurrent of romantic mystery.

The region’s owner, Katie Luna, explains that “Seaclaid was born in sorrow, but soon became an instrument of healing. Lost friends return, new friends are made. The place now has an almost magical feel to it. I step back in wonder and gratitude. That my simple little sim has garnered so much interest is amazing to me.” Although the region of Seaclaid is about 5 years old, the roleplay group active is now much older and as you can imagine, the landscape has evolved and grown more detailed over time.

In the video, Katie also states that “Since Seaclaid is a damaged part of the ferry, doorways open up at random times. And people from different time periods fall in, which allows for the oddities that you see walking around.” There is also so much to do and see here between the stone pathways, castle, Irish pub, and gallery. The gallery is filled with many styles of art, and don’t be surprised if you see a baby dragon floating by the fountain outside.

Sorrel Fang, a dressmaker, remarks that “Seaclaid is a breath of solitude, joyful fun when meeting others and sharing adventures, and a true masterpiece for the eyes and heart. Just when you think you know something, you discover a new mystery.” The wildflowers and sparkling water will take your breath away, and the many interesting shops are a pleasant way to lose track of time.

As Katie mentions in the video, Tam’yn comes from a different planet and accidentally got trapped. However, it seems like destiny given Tam’yn’s glowing testament to Seaclaid’s inclusivity: “As a dedicated Furr, I'd about given up on roleplay since most RP's are medieval, political, and humans only.  Seaclaid is not any of that.  Who you are is who you are since you "dropped in'' from somewhere and somewhen else.”

Some other prominent Residents include Cressy, a Fae fox, and Zsophia, a healer. Onceagain happened upon Seaclaid by chance through the Destination Guide and ended up opening a small photography studio. Onceagain says “I don't know how this adventure will end but I hope to leave lethargy behind and make new friendships because the beginning was sparkling.”

If you’re feeling inspired or would just like a nice place to relax, Seaclaid has several rentals open. It is a popular choice among bloggers and photographers, and there is no dress code. Visit Seaclaid today to enjoy a mystical windswept moment.

Second Life Destinations: Sandboxing Around the Grid

Second Life Destinations

A big part of the magic of Second Life involves building and scripting objects in real time and playing with prims. Sandboxes are designated areas for Residents to experiment with the art of building in SL, alone or with friends, in a what-you-see-is-what-you-get kind of way.

If you don’t own land or your landlord just has a small area restricted to rezzing and finetuning your models, fear not. There are many different sandboxes in SL, and many are attached to helpful groups where experienced builders are at the ready to assist with tips and tricks.

In the video we see several sandboxes featured, including one of the very first ones in Morris, which has been around since 2003 when the Welcome Area of Ahern came online.

The Ivory Tower of Prims can also be seen in the video. Not only does it have script-enabled sandbox areas with a separate damage-enabled weapons testing area, but The Tower is also an info hub for aspiring builders with lots of tutorials on how to manipulate the basic building block of SL: the almighty prim.

Another friendly sandbox area is the one embedded within the Amsterdam community. Don’t worry, many people in Amsterdam in SL speak English, so don’t hesitate to approach a friendly (flying?) Dutchman or woman if you are stuck with a building challenge.

There are even more places for your imagination to run wild in the sandbox category of the Destination Guide, and for premium Second Life members, there are exclusive members-only sandboxes available as well. If you ever feel stuck, in addition to chatting with members of building groups, please don't forget to check in with the building forums

Second Life Destinations: Rainbow Reef

Second Life Destinations

Endless summer awaits at Rainbow Reef, a surfing destination with everything you need to relax.

Creators Love Repine and Ghost Mannequin know Second Life pretty well, having been Residents for about 15 years. Love tells us, “My motivation to create in SL has always been around beach {regions}. Building an environment based on movement, ambience and sound, a place where people can really immerse themselves in a true beach experience. A place to call home and a bolthole to escape.”

Trade in skyscrapers for palm trees and hop into a wetsuit. Regarding the beach theme, Love adds, “I’ve been lucky to have had some amazing sims like Laguna Beach Club, Mojo Beach and now Rainbow Reef, that have attracted amazing people, which at the end of the day completes the circle.” A solar panel on one end of the beach gives it a modern touch.

A casual bar appears to be made of locally repurposed wood, providing a dance floor right on the water. Music was another factor that had to be just right, as Love mentions, “At Rainbow Reef we have hooked up with Dublab, an L.A.-based radio station that plays an eclectic mix of music which streams across the {region} 24/7 and brings in an extra dimension.” A cabana nearby would be a great spot to catch your breath after catching some waves, and the string lights make it great for day or night.

Regions that honor the beauty of nature and offer a virtual way to interact with it are great for virtual vacations when life doesn’t make it easy to take a day off. Love adds, “Recently at the height of the pandemic when people were restricted with travel, working from home, and often isolated in {the physical world}, Second Life gave people that channel to reach out and still feel connected.”

However, Love feels that this magical draw to connection is not unique to the last two years, citing it as “just one example of why people have consistently used Second Life and will continue to do so, creating wonderful experiences for others, and for themselves, to spend time in.” Plus, don’t miss your chance to grab a pic with an adorable stray beach cat.

As you can see in the video, Rainbow Reef is a melting pot of Residents ready to kick off their shoes and live in the moment. As a reminder that at any given moment in SL you can meet someone from another part of the world, one of the Residents in the video is Jetcat Despres, hailing from Japan. Drax tells us that “we had to use translators to communicate but we all felt very connected and had a sense of presence, as Love mentions above. However the ingenious decision of LL early on to create a sense of family via last names was awesome. I had forgotten about this amazing aspect of the SL Metaverse!”

Who knows, maybe you’ll run into a long lost virtual relative as well! Find out by visiting Rainbow Reef today.

Second Life Destinations: Popular Clubs

Second Life Destinations

Music is priceless; it can strengthen social bonds and turn an acquaintance into a lifelong friend. It is also one of the most effective ways to get people connected in a virtual world.

For close to two decades, Residents in Second Life have been using the power of music and virtual dancing to express themselves and interact with others. The Music category of the Second Life Destination Guide is filled with hundreds of venues playing all genres of music.

In this week’s destinations video, we are featuring six of the most popular clubs in Second Life, according to our data. Along with the music category, these clubs are also listed in the Popular Places category, which showcases some of the most visited places in SL that are great for socializing and newcomer-friendly, so there are no scripted newbie kickers, payment info restrictions, or adult ratings - all are welcome!

Exhale Dance Club is a great example of how there is literally never a dull moment in Second Life. DJs from all over the world play live mixes 24/7 in this sleek club with a huge dance floor, neon lights, and a peek of the nighttime city skyline through the windows. Exhale’s vibe features a variety of music genres including EDM, trap, hip hop, electro, techno, house, and trance. Visitors can also enjoy special themed events like  DJ battles. There is ample space for letting loose as well as chatting, and sometimes the DJs will make a shout out to individual patrons!

Big Daddy’s Rock Club has been a den of good vibes in SL for over a decade, changing the decor seasonally to keep things fresh. This open air dance floor also has a huge outdoor space to catch your breath and explore. Follow the walkway of Hollywood-like stars to get to know the history of the venue and some notable Residents. And just in case you need a last minute outfit change, Big Daddy’s Mall is right next door. Posters throughout the club offer Residents news of current events and ways to get more connected with the virtual world. Visit today to hear classic and contemporary jams as well as one-of-a-kind mashups.

Fogbound Blues is a laidback and rustic music venue where visitors can grab a seat at the bar, explore the dance floor, or lean against the jukebox to take it all in. The club opened in 2009 and over time gained a loyal following of music loving patrons. Owner Yanik tells us “Looking at it now with 70 avatars in the room, the best blues DJs in SL, and a full 24-hour schedule, it's light years ahead of what I hoped. It has become home for so many regulars. A social hub where friends gather. It's a community. Some depend on it to battle loneliness, sickness, to still feel somehow alive in this crazy era. It's now bigger than me. It's theirs, and I make sure it stays that way.”

Muddy’s Music Cafe is a slice of paradise for those in search of a beach vacation. Surrounded by glistening waves, this oasis offers an intimate dance floor and a lounge area with a pool table and piano. The decor is playfully casual, almost like a house party with a pile of records in one corner, musical instruments and statement pieces to serve as great conversation starters for even the shyest of Residents.

Las Muchachas is a Latin dance club with a casual dress code. You’ll hear everything from samba to salsa, mambo, merengue, flamenco, chacha, lambada, and more! The dance floor has the aesthetic of a wooden dock, as if your cruise ship just landed at this tropical locale with a view of the city off in the distance. Grab a festive drink, dance, and enjoy conversation in the cabana.

One of the walls in Peak Lounge is emblazoned with the phrase “When words fail, music speaks,” and we can’t agree more. This ultralounge features DJs from all over the world playing a variety of dance music. The decor feels like a celestial dream, with a modern lounge area flowing seamlessly into the dance floor and DJ booth. It comes as no surprise that Peak hosts exclusive fashion events, with stylish outfits and accessories available for purchase in the entryway. Peak Lounge expertly balances intrigue and hospitality, making all visitors feel welcome.

In the new year, explore new places and make new memories!

Second Life Destinations: One More Light

Second Life Destinations

Inspired by works like The Great Gatsby, One More Light is a portal to the New York glitz and glamor of the 1920s.

Owner Abigail Lemongrass has been a Resident for years, finding that the virtual world provided accessible relaxation and fulfillment: “I worked long hours as a nurse and getting out of the house wasn't always a feasible option for me. Through pictures and building, SL offered that bit of solace that a weary soul needs. What I have found is a world of people who very much like myself just needed a spot to land and escape the real world for a while.”

Upon landing, visitors are given instructions to rez a stylish classic car, enter the estate, and immerse themselves in the posh atmosphere. There’s nothing like a grand staircase to make you feel like you’re on a luxurious getaway!

Mark your calendars, as there will be an event series at the big Gatsby Mansion from May 5th through May 15th. The One More Light team is hosting this “to raise money and awareness for Relay for Life in Second Life. There will be musicians, theater performances, a gallery exhibit, a kind of Kentucky Derby, {a screening of} The Great Gatsby, and a big fireworks finale.”

Abigail tells us, “We really loved the DRD Hotel when we saw it and knew right away that we'd use it for an event. The whole idea of going back to the 1920's was one we all jumped on because it's so much fun to dress up in Second Life.”

You don’t want to miss this, as Abigail has mentioned “The hotel will be here until May 15th and then we'll be off to a new build. We already have plans on making it an annual event though.” So grab your formal wear and head over for a cocktail at the swanky bar and restaurant before it’s too late!

Abigail wants us to know that this labor of love took a village of brilliant creatives, sharing, “SL offered an opportunity that would not have been afforded to me otherwise… Building {One More Light} was a collaboration of ideas among us all. I had the vision and our designer was able to create it like she could see into my mind.”

Second Life Destinations: Nord Storm

Second Life Destinations

Nord Storm is a vast steampunk roleplaying experience featuring an abandoned laboratory, a sacred cathedral, retro gadgets, and more in a wintery mountain town.

For those unfamiliar, steampunk is a retrofuturistic subgenre of science fiction, and it has a sizable devotion in Second Life with many steampunk regions to explore. Nord Storm is a huge region with architecture and technology bearing the distinct aesthetic of what would be considered futuristic through a 19th-century lens.

Upon arrival, you are greeted with the message: “Here you can fight monsters, solve puzzles, upgrade avatar skills, craft, cook your own food, earn experience coins, play team games, fish, compete with other residents in skills, and much more... The game is available to all users.” Sounds like enough activity to fill up what’s left of 2020!

You first enter Nord Storm at an open air train station. In order to participate in the game component of the experience, you can receive a HUD from a machine nearby. The HUD has a built-in collision-based combat system. To hunt ghosts, you don't have to wear a combat system, but if you want your avatar to be able to deal damage to them, the combat system will allow you to do so.

You are free to explore on foot, but who wouldn’t want to use the time machine? All you have to do is launch the portal by reclining in the car seat. Click on the monitor to select one of the many locations in this world.

Be sure to keep an eye out for places marked with gold coins. When you sit at the designated earning spot, coins will be credited once a minute and can be used to purchase different items that enhance gameplay in the shop. You can also redeem prizes in the factory once you accrue enough experience points.

More details, pictures, and maps can be found at the official Nord Storm website.

For those more interested in admiring the architecture and environment than the gaming aspect, there is no pressure to conform to any specific gameplay rules. Everybody is welcome to visit the church, peruse the library, enjoy a quiet moment in the garden, or take a ride in the steampunk train.

If you’d like to adorn your avatar in steampunk attire, the marketplace has outfits and accessories for all levels of commitment. This region takes winter wonderland to the next level with the highly detailed levels of interactivity, gorgeous terrain, and hidden treats. Let Nord Storm whisk you away today.

Second Life Destinations: Metro City

Second Life Destinations

Metro City is an urban metropolis that was crafted with the intention of being a safe and inclusive space for all members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Creator Aesu Morningstar, aka the mayor of Metro City, tells us “I came to SL almost 17 years ago and to this day, I've been a die hard fan. Second Life has been my single most used social media platform and is truly the most immersive platform of its kind out there. Second Life has been the first and only true Metaverse.”

Given Aesu’s extensive experience in SL, when Covid first entered our lives it was only natural to build a meeting place for people to get through these difficult times. Metro City unsurprisingly had a powerful and positive impact on countless Residents. Aesu states “I credit Second Life for helping me stay sane while I stayed home! Over the span of the pandemic, Second Life gave me hope and I was able to stay mentally healthy because I could continue to be social even though I was locked inside.”

Metro City has an inviting aesthetic that is clean and modern, and yet ambiguous enough for it to exist anywhere in the world. This speaks to Aesu’s focus on inclusivity on a global level: “Although we're primarily in the USA, we have visitors and regulars from all over the world spanning many different time zones. And thankfully we have translators so we can all communicate with ease.”

Chat with friends at a cafe or take a peaceful stroll through a tree-lined courtyard or park. Metro City offers the tranquility of a perfect fall afternoon. There is also a steady stream of events! To name a few: trivia and other game nights, live DJs and performers, regular photo contests, themed parties, pop-up events, shopping and more.

Aesu would also like to inform people that “We are home to many full time Residents who either live in our main social region or in one of our "Metro City Destination" regions… Our staff of experienced managers are on-call most of the day to help new Residents with almost anything they could need.”

Visit Metro City today for a huge dose of relaxation and good vibes.

Second Life Destinations: Marfa

Second Life Destinations

This week we are visiting the southwestern splendor of Marfa, Texas.

Creator Valium Lavender, a proud Texan whose family has lived there for generations, had until now “never found the right way to capture my love for Texas in a {region} design.” That’s pretty understandable: given that its land mass is the second largest state in the U.S., there’s a lot of personality to convey.

While movies might give one the impression that Texas is defined by cowboy hats, barbecues, and country music, Lavender painstakingly sculpted this region to give Residents a more three-dimensional experience of her home state. She tells us that “Marfa, Texas in RL is this obscure, funky art mecca out in the middle of nowhere. Artists like Donald Judd settled in Marfa because of the massive uncluttered land space and abundance of natural light.”

One of Marfa’s crowning features here is The Empty Chair Gallery, comprising photos taken by a variety of renowned SL photographers and Lavender’s ode to the town’s artistic spirit. Lavender says she “chose photos  that imparted a feeling surrounding an empty chair. I felt that the 'empty chair' in most cases created the emotion of being lonely, sad, or waiting, and wanting from the observer. At  times, the chair instilled a sense of happiness, knowing perhaps, that soon someone would occupy their empty chair.”

This is just the beginning, as Lavender tells us “I hope to expand Marfa by adding “Ballroom Marfa,” which is the hub of cultural activity in RL Marfa, with the showing of international artists, local artists, artisans, folklore and history.”

Retro gas stations, cacti, and old school trucks add to the charm. Builder help for this project came from Fred Hamilton (frecoi), Lotus Mastroianni and Sofie Janic. Walking around this region brings a feeling of peace and a sense of curiosity.

Visit the quirky and charming town of Marfa today.

Visit the Lupus Awareness Fair at Blue Orchid District throughout the month of May to see the bright spirit of SL that connects people through troubling times.

The Blue Orchid is run by the sorority Sigma Upsilon Nu, and they have had a presence in SL since 2010. The main contributors to this event are Big Sister Cleopatra Kellman and Shanina Chenaux.

This virtual event raises awareness and makes a real impact with donations. Cleopatra and Shanina tell us, “Since 2010, Lupus Awareness has been Sigma Upsilon Nu's charity of choice. We have unselfishly dedicated our time in raising funds and awareness throughout the full month of May. With the help of our SL sponsors, designers, and supporters we raised $1,766.00 last year. As promised, all proceeds were donated to Lupus of America and Lupus of UK.”

For those unfamiliar with lupus, it is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue in many parts of the body. Common symptoms include painful and swollen joints, fever, chest pain, hair loss, mouth ulcers, swollen lymph nodes, feeling tired, and a red rash which is most commonly on the face. There are often periods of illness, called flares, and periods of remission during which symptoms are less severe or absent.

Research shows that Black women are disproportionately affected by lupus and that they also experience more rapid progression and worse outcomes compared with other groups.

This month-long event is an opportunity for people to learn something new and show support for a warm and inviting community. Enjoy a stroll through manicured courtyards while taking breaks to read posters with information on lupus, as knowledge is the power we need to dismantle stigmas and bring about equitable care for all.

One street is emblazoned with letters that spell out BLACK LIVES MATTER, with each letter bearing a colorful mural that supports the theme of civil rights. It is reminiscent of Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington, D.C. and is powerful to behold.

With a fully staffed restaurant, monthly lupus support group meetings, live poetry night, and many more special events taking place this month, we hope that you check it out.

Second Life Destinations: Laurel's Halloween Nightmare

Second Life Destinations

Explore the haunted theme park at Laurel’s Halloween Nightmare, with 19 horror movie scenes from classics like Frankenstein to modern horror like Saw. Scares lurk around every corner in this dazzling monument to all things frightful.

Creator Laurel Bradders (a.k.a. Baby Ghoul) is a Halloween fanatic, telling us “This is my fourth annual haunted theme park. I try to go bigger every year and top what I did the prior season.” This labyrinthine region changes stylistically as you go deeper, encompassing everything from Medieval castles to whimsical spookiness to futuristic nightmares. Don't be afraid to get lost: teleport portals will transport you from scene to scene.

The dedication is real, with Laurel putting in almost a year's worth of planning into each build: “My friends think I am crazy but, starting every January, I begin buying and collecting new ideas for the upcoming Halloween season. I get custom work done by script and mesh creators in SL.”

As thrilling as Laurel’s work is, the inspiration comes from a poignant effort to memorialize someone very special. Laurel explains, “I do it for my mom really. I lost her in 2015 and she was a huge horror genre fan. We used to watch all the spooky movies together and decorate as much as possible for Halloween. She made it great every year!” This labor of love is beyond impressive, with references to “Dracula to Kong vs. Godzilla with some Freddy Krueger and Pinhead thrown in as well!”

Halloween is one of the biggest events in the virtual world, and you don’t want to miss out on the hard work of a Resident who is clearly an expert on the subject. If you don’t know where to start, Laurel has groups on Facebook and Discord that can connect you with others in search of a good fright!

Come see Laurel’s Halloween Nightmare for yourself, if you think you’ll live to tell the tale.

Second Life Destinations: Isla del Mer

Second Life Destinations

Swim among Jurassic era dinosaurs and plant life dappled with hints of fantasy at Isla del Mar.

It’s time for your avatar to see what’s happening below the surface: the water is a surreal cyan body that feels very much alive, filled with glowing seaweed and moving with gusto.

Creator Saer Genosse is a 3D modeling aficionado, saying it all started when “I became obsessed with building and doing terrain work back in ActiveWorlds in 1995…” Saer tells us that eight years later, “a coworker showed me Second Life and it was like starting all over again! The SL terrain program is sooo much faster than it was in AW, and it is my favorite thing to do in 3D!”

Fly over an active volcano to see a thick river of magma, one of many terrifying yet beautiful natural phenomena that Residents get to experience in SL. For Saer, “a world build is like a painting. I pick the color scheme, decide on the theme, and it becomes a process of creation. The fun part about SL is you can tinker with it endlessly, and that is where I am today.” Isla del Mar blends the past and present to make a magical paradise featuring orcas, sharks, and many other majestic creatures that we know only from what they left behind.

Building in Second Life is engaging, fulfilling, and sometimes delightfully unpredictable. Saer shares, “Creating an environment that avatars enjoy has just been icing on the cake. Sometimes the theme of a world doesn't hit me until I start throwing terrain around. Some builds have even come to me in dreams! In the case of our newest {region} Isla del Mer, my RL husband and SL partner asked me a few years ago to build a volcano, so I finally have!”

The majority of the region is aquatic, and underwater exploration has a special way of providing the illusion of infinity. While all avatars are welcome to explore Isla del Mar, there is something spectacular about being able to glide through water with a fin. According to Saer, “We discovered Mer bodies a few years ago, and can't seem to go back to being 'leggers.' The fluidity and relaxing nature of swimming underwater is the most satisfying way I have found to spend my time online. Everyone should at least try it!”

Sears admits “I'm officially retired in RL and SL, but world building is in my blood and I can't imagine not doing it. I guess when I finally fall off the computer chair I'll quit.” Well, they say if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. Sounds like Saer has really gotten that figured out.

Second Life Destinations: Holidays Made in SL

Second Life Destinations

This week we are listening to five inspiring stories as Residents share how they celebrate the holidays in Second Life.

Isabelle Cheren, a video artist and blogger, speaks highly of SL Residents’ adaptability to the current social isolation in the physical world. Given the depth of connections people can have with each other in the virtual world, she thinks people may be more inclined to give it a try. Having grown up in Australia, Cheren says the winter holiday spirit of SL “feels like those films I used to watch when I was a young girl because… we never had any of this, the snow, that Christmas tree, all those things.” She also has the advantage of living with her friend, prominent SL YouTuber Yorkie, so they certainly never run out of ideas for inworld adventures and activities.

Squid and Timberwolf, a couple who met in SL this year, are proof that love can be found even in the darkest of times. Squid is a student in Derry, Northern Ireland, and Timberwolf lives in Central New York. They have been together for 6 months and getting a place together inworld has been a breeze. Squid says that SL has given them “a sort of proximity that we don’t have physically with each other,” which is so valuable in long distance relationships, especially now.

Rosie Gray lives in the Confederation of Democratic Simulators (CDS), one of the oldest communities in SL. It comprises six interconnected sims of varying themes that are governed by one administration. Gray affirms that “snow is greatly anticipated” in the CDS: Residents happily engage with the technical aspects of changing the terrain textures to make way for skiing, ice skating, and the magic of winter. Their commitment truly pays off, with Gray adding, “you can absolutely feel presence here.”

iSkye Silverweb and Slatan Dryke are another long distance couple in SL. With Silverweb in Wisconsin and Dryke in Italy, one look at their avatars shows that their bond is undeniable. They are Dinkies, which is a type of Tiny. Of their anthropomorphic feline figures, Silverweb says “they’re really cute, [with] round tummies,” and like many others, their favorite activity is ice skating. They are also both active in Virtual Ability, a community gateway for Residents with disabilities. Silverweb, who is deaf, says that “in SL there is the freedom of being able to express who you are in the choices you make with your avatar.”

Game Wylder, Todd Squall, and Lain Southpaw from Club Furzona emphasize that the winter holidays in their region are all about uniting different people from different backgrounds. Furzona is a community-based, cyberpunk themed region with a constant rotation of events, music, and  games. The large outdoor area has been transformed into a winter themed space, and Furzona welcomes all, not just furries.

The concert at the end is by Fly Kugin, a violinist from Istanbul, Turkey. It takes place in her region, White Mask. We hope that you all have a safe and relaxing break for the winter holidays, and remember that each season has its ups and downs. Spring will be in the air before we know it, so for now, let’s enjoy our ugly sweaters and unleash our inner snow bunnies upon the gorgeous winter regions forged by the love and creativity of SL Residents.

Second Life Destinations: Hauntings

Second Life Destinations

Kick off a month packed with virtual scares at Hauntings, an eerie region that gives ghost towns another meaning.

Although creator Bekks Heartsong was introduced to SL by her brother 14 years ago, she tells us that “I was very confused and not grasping the concept… Fast forward maybe eight years: I 'accidentally' ended up in an older virtual world (that's another story) and learned how to build houses there, but once I became bored of it I attempted SL on a different account again, started learning to navigate and… stayed.”

A quick visit to Hauntings is an excellent reminder to not be discouraged if you ever have trouble navigating the virtual world. Look at how far Bekks came! In fact, Bekks says “I am still here because I absolutely love the creativity of it all. I think I'm doing pretty well decorating,  then go see a great region and realize I have a lot more to learn.” Second Life is always evolving, but that is precisely because of the ingenuity of Residents.

A walk around Hauntings is like a walk through one of your childhood favorite Halloween movies. A clearing in the forest reveals a Slenderman-like being, creepy corn stalks, and of course, a haunted house. Don’t forget to look up! A menacing dragon is perched above, breathing fire on all who dare to approach.

You will also encounter a spooky stage covered in a rolling fog. Bekks tells us “Among many other events I host "Almost Live" Karaoke on my region. It is not live but almost, hence the name. It was established in 2018. Singers send hosts pre-recorded share links from their fave karaoke app (SingSnap, Smule, etc.). Avatars perform onstage while the link is streamed on an external browser. It's an amazing group of very supportive people. It's perfect for those of us who do NOT wish to sing live, but enjoy sharing our songs.”

Visit Hauntings today for a perfect mix of goofy fun and scary ambience.

Second Life Destinations: Hanging Gardens of Babylon

Second Life Destinations

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon masterfully blends the serenity of ancient artwork with stunning virtual architecture.

Creator Patch Thibaud is actually an architect in the physical world as well, and his years of experience inform every detail of this majestic locale. After observing some work on Patch’s Flickr, Resident Crista reached out to him to build a region for her. Of the request, Patch says, “I agreed to participate as long as I got to do The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, which was an ideal subject; an evocative and romantic concept, monumental in scale - and nobody has any idea what the original looked like, if in fact it existed at all.”

Patch’s affinity for building in the metaverse is strengthened by the fact that “there is no one in between me and the final result; I don't have to deal with contractors, estimators, building codes, etc.,” and yet there are limitless possibilities. Furthermore, Patch feels that “in all 3D modeling software I am familiar with, you are working in an abstract, gridded space. In SL I am used to working outdoors, with a beautiful sky and perhaps with beautiful water, and the context of an entire world.”

The concept of storytelling has been incorporated into many visual art forms, and as a trained designer, Patch adopted an episodic approach to the immense project. Patch created an extensive history for the estate: “This build imagines a structure originally built in mud brick by the Assyrians; later seized and rebuilt in stone by the Romans; {eventually} acquired by a cardinal during the military struggles of Renaissance Italy, who rebuilt the temple complex at the summit to include a villa for him and pleasure gardens and pavilions; subsequent alterations and additions by the cardinal’s family, including the ballroom and the Moroccan Garden; and finally the current owner, who restored the whole structure and its gardens, and inserted a gallery for art, built in the modern style.”

Crista is also a longtime Resident, having started her inworld adventures 14 years ago. For Crista, Second Life is “a part of myself… part of my life and {it has} taught me many things that made me what I am now, in RL and SL. I am one person living in two different worlds. A wonderful SL can make a better RL. The Gardens were my SL dream for years… A ton of thanks to Patch Thibaud, I am not sure if we have a better builder. Sharing the beauty he makes, {as well as the} sensations and feelings deriving from it, is the biggest pleasure and satisfaction in this world.”

Second Life Destinations: Hammifari

Second Life Destinations

This week we are taking a field trip to Hammifari, an African safari themed zoo event that runs until May 21st. Don’t miss out!

Hammifari is the latest creation of the Bellisseria Hammies, a couple/building team that oversee the Bellisseria Animal Sanctuary. They go by Hammie (Jessycajayne) and Varistentia Varriale

Hammifari has an open-plan setup, with the animals roaming freely. You can get up close and personal with giraffes, zebras, elephants, and more. There is also an elevated wooden walkway that lines the perimeter of the exhibit. It’s a great vantage point to enjoy the waterfall, trees, and surrounding nature.

This event takes place on the Bellisseria Fairgrounds, a space the Hammies are quite familiar with. They tell us they have done many events here, such as “Zoo-Palooza 1, {and} a winter fantasy land we called Hamnia - a play on Narnia. And we also did a summer-long Water Park last summer, which will be returning for its second year this coming July.”

Of their inspiration for Hammifari, the Hammies say “our main message to folks that come to see Hammifari or any other builds that we do, is a universal message to be kind to animals. To learn more about them and their needs, habitats etc. And to just generally help create a fun environment where families and anyone who also has an appreciation for wildlife can explore.”

The event is only up for a few more days, so teleport over soon before it disappears!

Second Life Destinations: Halloween Haunted Neighborhood

Second Life Destinations

We have entered that time of year where unforeseen events can occur in even the most tranquil Linden suburbs: this week’s Destination Guide video explores the Halloween Haunted Neighborhood.

One of the many benefits that Premium account holders can receive is a land allotment to use for a Linden Home. These neighborhoods have been landscaped to perfection, the transportation is smooth, and the locals are friendly. In most Linden Home areas, waterfront homes are available, as are single-family homes with beautiful yards, and there are plenty of customization options. But somehow, just a few days ago, this dreamscape has become a nightmare that Residents can’t wake up from.

It is immediately apparent to anyone familiar with the Millbank region that the atmosphere has been altered. The light is subdued, and a gloomy fog hangs about. Strange noises can be heard in every direction, ranging from a whirring chainsaw to screams dappled with eerie childrens’ laughter.

Today's video follows a masked character with bulging eyes and an unnerving smile as he prowls the streets, lurks in a derelict carriage, and watches an unsuspecting couple with his unblinking gaze. We are given clues as to what heinous acts may have taken place here, but the mystery remains unsolved. A stately home sits with an open door and ominous red light emanating from the windows. A cemetary can be found with creatures bursting through the cement.

Are you courageous enough to find out for yourself what happened here in the Millbank region? Will you explore alone, or bring a friend? Visit the Halloween Haunted Neighborhood today, and don’t forget to bring a flashlight!

Second Life Destinations: Funday by Cica Ghost

Second Life Destinations

“Funday” by Cica Ghost, a whimsical meditation imbued with childlike wonder, is open to visitors for one more week!

Cica Ghost is known in Second Life for making temporary creations akin to virtual art installations. While many parts of SL have been maintained for years, these transient regions are a great reason to log in regularly and explore, because you never know what you might miss.

Funday greets you with lighthearted old-timey jazz, which cements the feeling of being transported to a different time and place. One of the most visually striking elements of this region is the distorted sense of size. A cartoonish caterpillar the size of a school bus lounges in one of the large brick blocks. The aesthetic of the region is hard to categorize; it feels like a worn out schoolyard with sprinkles of farm life and bucolic peace. A cluster of brick boxes next to the caterpillar almost looks like an urban cat tree. Murals of children and animals offer trippy optical textures as your eyes comprehend a two-dimensional character in a three-dimensional space.

There is a hint of the adult fable throughout Cica’s work, a reminder that one is never too old to stop and play.

Some of Cica’s previous works that she is particularly proud of include Rust, a patchwork circus of metal gears, and Drawn Town, an immersive black and white illustration-themed neighborhood. Cica has been putting out a new installation every two or three months as of late, and while there are stylistic similarities due to her characteristic approach, color palette and tone are unpredictable. So much work goes into each build, support the visual artists and creators of SL by visiting today!

Linden Lab

This week we invite you to take a fantastical journey to the regions created by Resident Natalie Starlight.

United by thematic elements that draw from fairy tales, the fantasy genre, and her boundless imagination, these regions are visually sumptuous and will truly make you feel as if you have been transported to a different world.

The Lost Unicorn Gallery, shown in the video, features a beautiful elven castle full of amazing fantasy artwork. There are monthly shows and events for different artists, as well as rotational exhibits. Check out the official website for more information on the latest featured artist, cottage rentals, and photos.

Finian’s Dream, based on old Celtic Ireland, is a mysterious mountainside village. Walk into the fog to explore the castle, tavern, and rolling green hills.

There is also Storybook, which has a more whimsical aesthetic. Frolic amongst the flowers and glistening trees! This region welcomes all avatars but is a particularly wonderful place to visit for elves, faeries, fauns, satyrs, fae and the like.

Second Life Destinations: Euphoria

Second Life Destinations

This week we are taking a look at Euphoria, a region dedicated to life, loss, and love.

From Euphoria's creator, Kris Miss:

The inspiration behind Euphoria has a lot to do with the Covid pandemic. I lost so many relatives and family friends in just a year's time. Trying to cope became difficult and overwhelming, really. How does one mourn for several at a time? I was exhausted, to say the least. I come from a long line of huggers, and to hug my family during that time was out of the question. So how do I deal with my loss and still carry on? I kept logging into Second Life to try and forget. But inside me, I really wanted to express how I was feeling because I don’t want to forget. I want to always think about them, even when I log into Second Life.

So, I decided to create Euphoria not only for me but for everyone else who is trying to cope with a loss.

When I think of my family, I picture them in a place that’s truly peaceful and beautiful. Euphoria is my vision of that place. It took over two months for me to do. I just wanted the {region} to be special enough that even Second Life Residents would want to visit and memorialize a lost loved one there as well. And, now it is. Euphoria is my little oasis. I get to visit the memorial wall every day and as many times as I like.

Second Life made it possible for me to at least be with friends, and I will forever be grateful. They helped more than they know. And if I can return the favor, I do hope the {region} brings comfort to them and others who may be missing a loved one.

I hope more people will take advantage of the services I offer, like meditation and memorializing their loved ones. Meditation helped me a lot during those dark moments and I believe it can help others, too. SL Residents can also add their loved one's name to the memorial wall or light a candle for them. And maybe, while visiting, someone will meet their true love and have a wedding at the {region}. Now that would be truly special!

(Music for this video was written by Draxtor in memory of Linden Lab CEO Ebbe Linden, who passed away on June 3rd, 2021. You can download the piece “For Ebbe” here. You are welcome to use it in your own work,  but if you do, please credit Draxtor.)

Second Life Destinations: Ethereal Realms

Second Life Destinations

Experience the magic and tranquility of Ethereal Realms, where you can float through an enchanted forest or visit the colorful cyber city above.

Creator Rapa Tone, who lives in Japan IRL, tells us “I started to design Ethereal Forest to be a place for elves, pixies, a place for all mythical creatures to relax and be at peace. As the place matured and more people came to visit, it started to become a place for all people, even regular humans, to find a place of solace in these dark times…”

A great degree of thought and preparation went into even the smallest of this region’s details. According to Rapa, “Ethereal Forest features many objects by many different SL creators, all placed together. When I started designing my {region}, I was thinking how can I make a hidden forest that is occupied by three people and still, no one can really see it?”

When it came time to bring this idea to life, Rapa “spent one month building everything with no design or thinking, just an intuitive, creative stream of consciousness.” This was deeply informed by Rapa’s many walks in Kyoto, Gifu, Hyogo, and the beauty of the Chūbu region. Ethereal Realms seamlessly blends the tranquility of a Japanese garden with the otherworldliness central to the aesthetic of the fantasy genre.

Second Life Destinations: Elvion

Second Life Destinations

Escape to a wonderland of wildflowers and rolling hills at Elvion, a quiet sanctuary for daydreaming and the like.

Built by creator Bo Zano out of adoration for “Elves and other creatures... a relic from my long time playing Skyrim. It is now in its sixth version, every version being unique in style.” Elvion shares some familiar traits with other fantasy realms of Second Life, such as an ethereal atmosphere with a soft amber glow buzzing from the trees. Yet it is a completely original interpretation of the theme. The train station at the landing point gives it a modern feel, like this could be a small English country town.

Bo tells us “I have always been fascinated by 3D modeling and rendering. After I found out I could "edit" in SL, I have been building {regions}.” Elvion has gone through many remodels, with Bo saying “With every iteration I try to improve things and apply the lessons learned from previous ones. But, it is also about finding a way to be creative. To put my thoughts and feelings into creating something that inspires…” The landscape is stunning, and each step forward along the overgrown rail tracks feels like the unfolding of a peaceful reverie.

With Elvion, teamwork has proven to be invaluable. Bo says, “The last versions of Elvion I have been co-building with my RL and SL partner Una Zano. I do mostly the landscaping and exteriors now, while she makes amazing interiors and decorative scenes.” A special part of Elvion's personality involves the furry friends roaming around. There's an adorable English Bulldog hanging out, as well as farm animals. The cliffs overlooking the water provide an amazing view and speak to the variety of terrain found here.

In the creator's words, “Enjoy beautiful vistas in this relaxing paradise, from stunning ocean views and forest trails to detailed interior scenes. Elvion is an ideal place for photographers, bloggers and couples.” Visit Elvion today!
