Second Life Destinations: Funday by Cica Ghost

Second Life Destinations

“Funday” by Cica Ghost, a whimsical meditation imbued with childlike wonder, is open to visitors for one more week!

Cica Ghost is known in Second Life for making temporary creations akin to virtual art installations. While many parts of SL have been maintained for years, these transient regions are a great reason to log in regularly and explore, because you never know what you might miss.

Funday greets you with lighthearted old-timey jazz, which cements the feeling of being transported to a different time and place. One of the most visually striking elements of this region is the distorted sense of size. A cartoonish caterpillar the size of a school bus lounges in one of the large brick blocks. The aesthetic of the region is hard to categorize; it feels like a worn out schoolyard with sprinkles of farm life and bucolic peace. A cluster of brick boxes next to the caterpillar almost looks like an urban cat tree. Murals of children and animals offer trippy optical textures as your eyes comprehend a two-dimensional character in a three-dimensional space.

There is a hint of the adult fable throughout Cica’s work, a reminder that one is never too old to stop and play.

Some of Cica’s previous works that she is particularly proud of include Rust, a patchwork circus of metal gears, and Drawn Town, an immersive black and white illustration-themed neighborhood. Cica has been putting out a new installation every two or three months as of late, and while there are stylistic similarities due to her characteristic approach, color palette and tone are unpredictable. So much work goes into each build, support the visual artists and creators of SL by visiting today!

Second Life Destinations: Isla del Mer

Second Life Destinations

Swim among Jurassic era dinosaurs and plant life dappled with hints of fantasy at Isla del Mar.

It’s time for your avatar to see what’s happening below the surface: the water is a surreal cyan body that feels very much alive, filled with glowing seaweed and moving with gusto.

Creator Saer Genosse is a 3D modeling aficionado, saying it all started when “I became obsessed with building and doing terrain work back in ActiveWorlds in 1995…” Saer tells us that eight years later, “a coworker showed me Second Life and it was like starting all over again! The SL terrain program is sooo much faster than it was in AW, and it is my favorite thing to do in 3D!”

Fly over an active volcano to see a thick river of magma, one of many terrifying yet beautiful natural phenomena that Residents get to experience in SL. For Saer, “a world build is like a painting. I pick the color scheme, decide on the theme, and it becomes a process of creation. The fun part about SL is you can tinker with it endlessly, and that is where I am today.” Isla del Mar blends the past and present to make a magical paradise featuring orcas, sharks, and many other majestic creatures that we know only from what they left behind.

Building in Second Life is engaging, fulfilling, and sometimes delightfully unpredictable. Saer shares, “Creating an environment that avatars enjoy has just been icing on the cake. Sometimes the theme of a world doesn't hit me until I start throwing terrain around. Some builds have even come to me in dreams! In the case of our newest {region} Isla del Mer, my RL husband and SL partner asked me a few years ago to build a volcano, so I finally have!”

The majority of the region is aquatic, and underwater exploration has a special way of providing the illusion of infinity. While all avatars are welcome to explore Isla del Mar, there is something spectacular about being able to glide through water with a fin. According to Saer, “We discovered Mer bodies a few years ago, and can't seem to go back to being 'leggers.' The fluidity and relaxing nature of swimming underwater is the most satisfying way I have found to spend my time online. Everyone should at least try it!”

Sears admits “I'm officially retired in RL and SL, but world building is in my blood and I can't imagine not doing it. I guess when I finally fall off the computer chair I'll quit.” Well, they say if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. Sounds like Saer has really gotten that figured out.

Second Life Destinations: The Lost Wonderland

Second Life Destinations

Feel the thrill of exploring an abandoned theme park on a rainy night at The Lost Wonderland.

This region is an ode to a nostalgia that many Residents may relate to. Creator Litani Istmal was having a conversation with some friends, reminiscing about “our years of meeting up at the small arcade in our mall before it shut down. It was our favorite meet up spot, the spot to meet someone new, and to just relax after a long week stuck in classes. For me, the whole experience is like going back in time to a place where happy memories were created.” The theme of the arcade is both literal and meta here; while you explore the grounds, given the the element of roleplay, it can also feel like you are inside of a game.

The landing point gives you the option of going in two directions, towards the outdoors portion with rides, or a covered area that bears similarities to the urban underground of an Asian neighborhood. Empty shops, a laundromat, and bright lights add an air of playful mystery.

The outdoor area is a dilapidated theme park with a ferris wheel, game booths, and other rides in a rusty state of decay. The once bright colors have now faded into garish shades under the dim light. Remnants of a wooden roller coaster sit at the edge, where riders once enjoyed a panoramic view of the surroundings. Walk into a dark cave and you’ll be teleported to another location, so visitors should be up for anything.

Since SL has been around for so long, Litani’s relationship to SL had time to grow and evolve. This might be encouraging for newer Residents or for those who are ready to try something new but don’t know where to start. Litani actually went through a creative block for a period, but tells us, “When the pandemic hit and the lockdowns followed, I found myself signing into SL again. I started exploring a bustling neighborhood style community and there I rediscovered my love for roleplay while COVID continued to turn every place in the real world into a ghost town.”

Following this renewed interest in virtual creation and connection, Litani adds, “The pandemic definitely changed Second Life for me. I became more social and also made new friends that introduced me to activities like the weekly grid drives. That’s when I started to really explore and discover what all the Mainland had to offer.”

For those unfamiliar with the Mainland, Litani says “Mainland is a vital artery of SL. It offers plenty of amazing places created by Residents to explore and discover. Some of these amazing experiences include working railroads, subway stations, airports, and my favorite, sailing the open seas.  To the new explorer who may feel overwhelmed, there are pod stations that take you on tours. There are also great groups like Passengers of SL, where you can catch multiple plane rides and Drivers of SL, with their weekly guided grid drives.”

Visit The Lost Wonderland today to get your fix of good-natured mischief. Who knows where it will lead?

Second Life Destinations - The Endless Graveyard

Second Life Destinations

Something is amiss at The Endless Graveyard. Explore the tranquil, yet eerie forest and you may stumble upon a doorway to the supernatural.

Creator Lady Death Valknut started with a story, and as this narrative became more elaborate, this vast and mysterious place came together.

According to Lady Death,

"The story begins in Sweden, in the Victorian era, in a small town near the Norwegian border.  This town was a booming mining town, with rich deposits of Iron, copper, silver, and gold.  The town was swollen with wealth and elite society as a result of the profits from the mining ventures.  Miners would traverse the forest each day to dig deeper and deeper in the mines to extract these precious metals.

However, unbeknownst to the miners, the town and forest existed near the only mortal doorway into the Underworld, the realm of Death herself.  Unexplained occurrences began to happen in the mine shafts.  Finally, one day after a blast of dynamite was used to open the next chamber of the mine, the gate to the Underworld fell open and the dead came screaming out like a tidal wave.”

As you walk around, subtle hints make it increasingly apparent that a macabre otherworldliness has enveloped this place. The dappled light that squeezes in from above is tinged with unnatural hues. Lanterns are shrouded in huge horns from animals that must look terrifying. Or are they carved bones?

Lady Death tells us, “For me, Second Life has always been a creativity outlet. It's the perfect place to combine my love of writing with my love of design. I have hundreds of stories in my head, and worlds to go with each of them. The theme of The Endless Graveyard is just one of those stories, and I chose it because it was one of the environments that best suited my character as Death.” As intricate as this region is, it is actually still being worked on and a full website will be available soon.

With SL, jumping right in and teleporting from place to place is a great way to get your bearings. This approach certainly worked for Lady Death: “I began Second Life by exploring places, getting lost in them, and finding hidden places. That is what made me fall in love with Second Life in the first place, and now I seek to create an environment destined to be explored, with hidden places that can only be found if one looks hard enough. I wish to pass on the joys I experienced in my newer days to the future Residents, something that sparks their imaginations and makes them think deeper about what they see on the surface.”

Do you dare face the dark presence that lurks in The Endless Graveyard? Discover hidden spots off the beaten path today.

Second Life Destinations: Rainbow Reef

Second Life Destinations

Endless summer awaits at Rainbow Reef, a surfing destination with everything you need to relax.

Creators Love Repine and Ghost Mannequin know Second Life pretty well, having been Residents for about 15 years. Love tells us, “My motivation to create in SL has always been around beach {regions}. Building an environment based on movement, ambience and sound, a place where people can really immerse themselves in a true beach experience. A place to call home and a bolthole to escape.”

Trade in skyscrapers for palm trees and hop into a wetsuit. Regarding the beach theme, Love adds, “I’ve been lucky to have had some amazing sims like Laguna Beach Club, Mojo Beach and now Rainbow Reef, that have attracted amazing people, which at the end of the day completes the circle.” A solar panel on one end of the beach gives it a modern touch.

A casual bar appears to be made of locally repurposed wood, providing a dance floor right on the water. Music was another factor that had to be just right, as Love mentions, “At Rainbow Reef we have hooked up with Dublab, an L.A.-based radio station that plays an eclectic mix of music which streams across the {region} 24/7 and brings in an extra dimension.” A cabana nearby would be a great spot to catch your breath after catching some waves, and the string lights make it great for day or night.

Regions that honor the beauty of nature and offer a virtual way to interact with it are great for virtual vacations when life doesn’t make it easy to take a day off. Love adds, “Recently at the height of the pandemic when people were restricted with travel, working from home, and often isolated in {the physical world}, Second Life gave people that channel to reach out and still feel connected.”

However, Love feels that this magical draw to connection is not unique to the last two years, citing it as “just one example of why people have consistently used Second Life and will continue to do so, creating wonderful experiences for others, and for themselves, to spend time in.” Plus, don’t miss your chance to grab a pic with an adorable stray beach cat.

As you can see in the video, Rainbow Reef is a melting pot of Residents ready to kick off their shoes and live in the moment. As a reminder that at any given moment in SL you can meet someone from another part of the world, one of the Residents in the video is Jetcat Despres, hailing from Japan. Drax tells us that “we had to use translators to communicate but we all felt very connected and had a sense of presence, as Love mentions above. However the ingenious decision of LL early on to create a sense of family via last names was awesome. I had forgotten about this amazing aspect of the SL Metaverse!”

Who knows, maybe you’ll run into a long lost virtual relative as well! Find out by visiting Rainbow Reef today.

Second Life Destinations: The Desire Realm

Second Life Destinations

The Desire Realm pays homage to Roro Jonggrang, a Javanese fairy tale of love and betrayal, set in a gorgeous Hindu temple with a tropical monsoon climate.

Creator Aryluke tells us that this region was originally something else, and over time evolved into Candi Roro Jonggrang - Prambanan. Prambanan is an 8th-century Hindu temple compound in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, that is dedicated to the Trimūrti, the expression of God as the Creator (Brahma), the Preserver (Vishnu), and the Destroyer (Shiva).

Aryluke explains, “I love building in Second Life, so my {region} and its concept will most likely always change a lot. However, it will still be about my home here in Central Java, Indonesia and all the monuments and temples we have here in {the physical world}. I will keep them rezzed to share with everyone all over the world.”

The sky and water bear an interesting palette of sepia and taupe; this shields visitors from the harsh tropical sun while giving the region a peaceful golden hour tone. It also makes the green of the palm trees and plant life pop. This is a tranquil region untouched by industrialization, made in honor of natural beauty and its sacred soundscape.

The setting has great spiritual value, as Aryluke tells us, “The Desire Realm or Karma Vhibangga Level as it stands now on my {region} is the lowest level of The Borobudur, which features 160 relief panels all telling stories about moral and ethical questions and interactions between people in a variety of social settings, so they - as Buddhists - can become better humans, while in the physical realm.” Perfectly preserved ancient structures provide a sense of timelessness, and sculptures of Hindu deities are immensely humbling. If you are lucky enough to find a horse, riding it over the water is pure magic, imbuing visitors with a profound sense of gratitude.

Aryluke’s creative process involved the following: “I used some pictures from the museum in Borobudur and textured them on those giant prims surrounding the top level of the Borobudur. This way people who visit can actually view them, which they could not do in RL because they are too high up.”

Aryluke’s approach to SL is multifaceted, illustrating the numerous ways that Residents can find fulfillment here: “I joined SL to have more creativity, friends, and fun. It has been a wonderful world for me, {I’m} so glad to see what people build here from all over the world. A lot is about nature, education, art, culture, etc. I spend my time in SL exploring places. There is a lot to learn here, if you want to.”

Regarding what sets Second Life apart from other virtual worlds, Aryluke tells us, “Considering everything we have in SL: the variety of {regions}, quality of avatars, business/marketplace, virtual currency, land/property, and social life… SL is still the best metaverse for me.”

We each have a unique perspective on the culture we grew up in, and experiencing different cultures with the guidance of someone within the community provides invaluable authenticity, with little details you can’t always find through your own research. Like many others, Aryluke explains, “I have been a heritage enthusiast since I was very young, and so when I discovered SL and had a chance to build things we have here in Indonesia, it became very interesting for me.”

Immerse yourself in ancient history and international culture the Second Life way, and visit The Desire Realm today.

Second Life Destinations: The Forgotten Gardens

Second Life Destinations

A peaceful fog rolls over the hills of The Forgotten Gardens, where fantasy roleplayers and curious explorers can spend hours writing their own story.

This expansive region feels like a slice of English countryside cloaked in elements of high fantasy. Creator Eloise Lionheart explains, “I've always been drawn to the fantasy side of avatars. Fairies, elves, and other mythical creatures. That combined with my love of nature, I felt a need, a pull towards something more fantasy in theme, more an escape into the imagination, an escape from reality.” It certainly is, with glowing specks floating in the air giving the entire region a very magical touch.

Upon arrival, visitors walk out into tall grass where a creek flows nearby. On the other side is a gazebo overgrown with vines, flowers, and thick roots wrapped around the fountain in the center. The lush plant life makes it feel as if the whole place is alive. In addition to the fantasy genre, Eloise tells us of a particularly influential book: “The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson is a childhood memory and building a secret garden filled with fantasy and wonder became a must.” Quirky frog sculptures and plants with bulbous flowers the size of your head add a whimsical flair. The English undertones are visible yet again with none other than a sweet Corgi sitting in a wagon.

Eloise proclaims, “For me, one of the many joys of the Second Life Metaverse is that region creators can bring to life fantasy, roleplay or real life destinations.” However, building was not on their radar at first. “I never once thought I would have the ability to create regions people enjoy so much. I knew nothing about landscaping or creating a scene. I spent a long time browsing Flickr in wonder at the way bloggers, creators, and landscapers would display content and make it look so realistic and thought provoking.”

So, to newer Residents or those interested in building but are scared to try, Eloise says, “When you are looking at that flat square of terrain, it can be close to impossible to imagine it can be developed into your thoughts. That first step is to believe in yourself and if I can do this, anyone can!”

Each section of this region feels like a chapter of a story. In one corner, a small cemetery is adorned with wildflowers, under the careful watch of some stoic deer. If you dare to cross into the more dense fog, sculptures of two rearing unicorns form an arch at the entrance of a bridge. Of the twists and turns of the creative process, Eloise says, “That is the magical part of learning on this journey. Each failure has been a lesson and each lesson another idea, and from that idea has grown a new thought to share. Best of all, a small piece of land can be the start of great things and this ability to grow is open to everyone, it just takes some belief in yourself…”

A mansion or castle lies just beyond, with halls bearing trails of white rose petals. This place could even be a wedding venue, with a regal ceremony room and playful modern touches like a rec room offering billiard and ping pong tables. It gives The Forgotten Gardens an air of unpredictability, proving again that in Second Life, anything is possible.

“I truly believe that Second Life and the 3D world is an extension to books or films. You can lose yourself in a book, the hours pass and you crave the ending, to know the full story, to see if your theory was right. That creativity of writing carries over into this world we all share: as books fill our minds with words, those words become pictures, and from those pictures we form ideas. It pushes your need to create it in another form, and that is the beauty of Second Life. People bring stories to life virtually as their imagination is stirred. It's a never-ending flow that brings inspiration to the wanderer…”

Wander through The Forgotten Gardens today to see what kind of story you’ll leave with. Post on the region’s Flickr to share with others, and maybe your story will evolve into an epic tale!

Second Life Destinations: Black Kite

Second Life Destinations

Step into the surreal otherworldliness of Black Kite, where the serenity of a lily pond meets the comfort of your coolest friend’s living room.

Black Kite is sort of a patchwork of inventive resting places connected by long piers that extend deep out into the water. This adds a fun hint of surprise as you approach each station, as you have no idea what is about to rez. Creator Cloudy tells us, “Second Life is this magical world of creativity and expression; you can do just about anything and be just about anyone. I love how it connects so many people from all over the world and different backgrounds, enriching your life in ways one might never have expected.”

This region is ripe for exploration, with sights like floating fish and cozy pieces of furniture strewn about the corners. What at first looks like a small shack turns out to be an industrial chic lounging area with water lilies sprouting through the cracks in the floor. Cloudy explains that this imaginative creation is a way of giving back to SL, saying, “I would spend countless hours at places, just enjoying what other creators made… I decided I wanted to give back, like so many others did before me, and create a little spot where people could think, dream, and just have a special little place to call their home if they didn't have one. I wanted to add my own little bit of magic to this magical place.”

This photogenic region shows the vibrant intersections of fantasy, art, and self-expression that take place in our virtual world everyday. The glistening water gives a sense of timelessness while other elements, like a whirlwind of butterflies around a tree, are perfectly frozen. Black Kite has an aura of self-acceptance that Cloudy also appears to possess, stating, “I take Second Life just like real life, one day at a time… so who knows what the future may bring. Perhaps working with others on projects, maybe creating a new project myself or just continuing to enjoy seeing people come to Black Kite after all these long years.” A dilapidated phone booth, a symbol of travel or transformation in many works of fiction, is adorned with tree branches and golden buttercups. Nature gracefully reclaiming human creations is a predominant theme of this whimsical dreamscape.

On what may come of other “metaverse” platforms, Cloudy tells us, “I've tried just about every single virtual world that has come out and yet I'm still here in Second Life. All these other worlds come and go.”

There is also a corner where you can buy home and garden items made in the same fantastical style, for those inspired to create their own dreamy getaway. Flowers as tall as an avatar play with size distortion, adding childlike wonder and playfulness. “Second Life means a lot to me, it's more than just a game or hobby, as it allowed me to meet so many people I would never have; I've made wonderful friendships and bonds that make me feel very blessed.”

Second Life Destinations: Sous le Ciel de Paris

Second Life Destinations

Get early access to a crisp spring morning by visiting Sous le Ciel de Paris, a chic rooftop garden brimming with rustic charm.

Creator Tolla Crisp, the mastermind behind Frogmore and Mousehole, crafted this tranquil resting spot in the Art Nouveau style, with architecture and furniture that evoke the graceful curves of tendrils and flowers. Tolla tells us, “Paris started off as my own personal home, not intended to be a public venue. I started with an old skybox from Pixel Mode which I modified and then I added on and modified builds from Milk Motion, Apple Fall, and Minimal.” This all culminated in a whimsically curated space that looks like a virtual home and garden magazine. Visitors can enjoy the ambience on cozy patio furniture, but don’t miss the chicken coop, ornate metalwork, or baskets of freshly picked produce.

The region’s name roughly translates to Under Paris Skies, as Tolla says, “It evolved into a 'spring' Paris rooftop with lots of flowers: I think everyone is ready for a fresh break from winter.” There is something so soothing about spring’s themes of rebirth and fresh growth. It serves as a reminder that even on the gloomiest winter day, the cycle of life will continue and we will make it to another sunny morning. No matter what is happening in the physical world, Second Life should always be a safe haven where Residents can have fun and relax.

Regarding creative processes, Tolla tells us, “My inspirations come from the research I do on Pinterest. I use a  board to gather ideas for each project,  as well as from my great friends in SL that are from France.” The region’s aesthetic is dappled with soft pastels; pops of color burst forth from the warm patina of the buildings and decor. This place is very much alive, with hummingbirds buzzing about the flower patch and a mischievous squirrel swinging from a bird feeder as it tries to snag some nuts and seeds.

Tolla has been a Resident for quite some time, telling us, “Second Life has meant many things over the years and like most people that do stay a long time, I have evolved and changed over that time… creating beautiful spaces that I can share with others has brought much happiness and satisfaction, and keeps me returning to SL. My journey with Frogmore has been very rewarding indeed.”

Given the increased conversation around virtual spaces and the concept of the metaverse, Tolla says, “I am very passionate about the freedom we have in SL versus anything FB might offer… I invite you to have a peek at a video my friend Tutsy Navaratha recently made regarding Metaverse and SL: Mon Metaverse."

Stay tuned for updates on Tolla's other creative endeavors, as they mentioned “I will continue to grow and change Frogmore and Mousehole regions and hopefully continue to deliver an immersive experience to share with all. We have big plans for both regions in 2022…”

Love Made in Second Life 2022

Second Life Destinations

Check out this video tour of six love-themed regions so you can plan your visit ASAP.

There’s a quick peek at Isle of View, the Linden-run location that pops up every February. In fact, this region is hosting Dunk and Hug a Linden TODAY from 1pm to 3pm SLT. Come hang out and chat!

There is also Hypnotic Romance, owned by Miss B. Miss B met her partner in SL, so she really means it when she says, “avatars can fall in love, after all they are real people.. you don't have the boundaries of looks. You find it easier to open up and learn so much more about the other person just by talking.” Miss B owns several Linden Homes and is a very active user, telling us, “I love everything about Second Life because I can explore, dance, build, design and {do} anything I want to (I can even dance naked). What I love most is being able to talk to people from all over the world and from different walks of life!” In terms of what inspired Hypnotic Romance, Miss B says, “I wanted a romantic {region} to reflect my vision of a perfect date in a moderate and beautiful setting. Hypnotic Romance was developed for avatars to have a place to meet, to spend time alone, getting to know someone intimately, with a romantic interest or someone special.”

Valentine’s Skiing, owned by Lestat Zalivstok, champions the idea that a more wintery vibe can make snuggling with someone special extra fun. Lestat tells us, “the idea of Valentine's Skiing came from the fact that my SL brother Kwajkid (who owns the region with me) and I love mountains and snow. What's better than a cozy place with a fireplace for you and your loved one after a day of having fun in the snow?” It’s important to celebrate and engage in traditions to both connect to others as well as maintain a sense of normalcy. As Lestat knows, “it's not easy to be together on Valentine's day, especially during these years of pandemic. Second Life has been an amazing and safe way to meet, and to spend romantic and fun time together.”

Ashley's Oasis Elite is owned by Ashley Bellows, who believes that “each day should have love, caring, loyalty, joy, enjoyment. I find each of them in Second Life on a daily basis from friends who have crossed my path and have remained friends for years.” Ashley encourages everyone to be open to the special connections waiting in SL, and Oasis Elite has fun games and gorgeous scenery to get conversations started. Need a last minute V Day plan? Stop by today, as Ashley would like us to know that “on Valentine's Day we will be enjoying an hour together with anyone that would like to attend our Love in Air Formal/ Sim Formal at Ashley's Oasis Elite. Chris London will be performing live from his home in London England.”

Crystal Line Romantic Ballroom, is an opulent region owned by Anzenpin, a Resident from Japan. For Anzenpin, “Second Life is a part of my hobby where I can enjoy riding a marimo, playing a guitar and singing live. You can also make friends with people from all over the world.”

Last but not least is Incanto Musical Dreams, a colorful fantasy region owned by Nicky Mirajkar, as well as the Valentine’s category of the Destination Guide. We hope everybody has a fantastic and safe V Day that serves as a warm reminder that love will always prevail.

Plus, stay tuned to find out about the love story between Ajay McDowwll and her husband Syn Zabelin, who met on Help Island and have been married for over a decade. Episode coming May 3rd.

Second Life Destinations: The Meroe Museum

Second Life Destinations

This week Ras Solaris, curator of the Meroe Museum, eloquently describes the value of sharing culture as a way to enable an authentic and three-dimensional understanding of the Black community.

Ras describes the Meroe as a “hub to learn the origins of all cultures in an interactive and engaging way. {It’s} Focused on providing a safe space for people to discuss cultural differences and to challenge current ways of thinking.” Ras became a Resident years ago, recently returning from a hiatus “because I noticed the amazing changes in technology, architecture, and the incredible amount of multiculturalism from across the world. Although many spend their time on FB, I prefer the Metaverse space, Second Life… where privacy and content creation are key for Residents to be able to help create in this amazing world.”

Throughout the video, Ras illustrates how a more thorough understanding of other cultures can help deconstruct bias. He also shows us the humanizing power of diverse representation in all fields of study. For example, the Innovation and Black Inventions exhibit presents essential items from modern life that, unbeknownst to many of us, were invented by Black people. By tying in the contributions of Black people in the physical world to the creations of Black Residents in the virtual world, the Meroe reminds us that every avatar you meet has a rich history that led them to this moment.

This venue has two exhibit halls, a vibrant gallery, and don’t forget to explore outside the museum walls! THE BLVD. and Jamrock City offer a variety of terrains, seasons, and exploration.

Plus, mark your calendars, as there will be a two day music festival at the end of the month. However, Ras wants us to know that the Meroe Museum will not disappear at the end of Black History Month. We hope that patronage continues to be robust throughout the year, and that the knowledge gained in this space breeds kindness and positive change. As a bonus, Ras tells us  “100% of donations are given to RL not-for-profits focused on community service and STEM programs.”

Contributors to this project include:
Fly Toretto: An inworld automotive designer, Fly’s contribution is a part of the Innovations and Inventions Exhibit that highlights core inventions created by Black people that we use in our daily lives.
Diamond Martinez: Founder of Rho Gamma Psi sorority, Diamond’s contribution is a part of the Kente Cloth Exhibit that highlights the traditional cloth and the history and messaging behind it.
Alora Taurus: Model, Artist, and Photographer. Alora’s contribution is a part of our Tech and Communications and the Innovations and Inventions Exhibit. Her art titled “Cosmological” is featured in both exhibits.
Dehja Dahl: Model, artist, and photographer. Dehja contributed her recent art piece, which incorporates the work of the infamous artist, Basquiat. Her art is featured as part of MEROE standard communications and will be featured in the Basquiat Exhibit this summer.
Ms Warm: Owner of Business Minded, a networking business group. Ms Warm specializes in identifying SL Residents with high-value unique offerings. She is an avid entrepreneur in the community who has a keen eye for representation.
GiGi Monet: Director at MEROE and founder of The BLVD., GiGi specializes in creating interactive experiences in Second Life. She is passionate about bringing in quality, process, and structure into aesthetically pleasing viewscapes. GiGi’s contributions to the Museum vary from Operations, Graphics, Marketing, Landscaping, and more.
Tyesia Xevious: DJ and CEO of Frequency Radio, Tyesia is our main Media contributor and has curated an afro-centric experience on Frequency Radio, which is currently featured on the region.
Nedar Koba: As a mesh designer, Nedar specializes in creating high quality unique designs. His contribution includes the Adinkra symbol, which happens to be the only Adinkra symbol created in Second Life, the Gye Nyame that you see throughout the region.
The BLVD.: Home to MEROE Museum, JamRock City Residential Community, and A XeoLife Roleplay Shopping and Dining Experience. The region is lightly based on tropical islands around the world with a flare of luxury, serenity, and waterfalls surrounding you.

We’d also like to share the other ways we are celebrating Black History Month inworld: Pic of the Day will feature a Black Resident every weekday, don’t miss our weekly Second Life Spotlight posts, and please visit the Social Awareness Category of the Destination Guide.

Second Life Destinations: Metro City

Second Life Destinations

Metro City is an urban metropolis that was crafted with the intention of being a safe and inclusive space for all members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Creator Aesu Morningstar, aka the mayor of Metro City, tells us “I came to SL almost 17 years ago and to this day, I've been a die hard fan. Second Life has been my single most used social media platform and is truly the most immersive platform of its kind out there. Second Life has been the first and only true Metaverse.”

Given Aesu’s extensive experience in SL, when Covid first entered our lives it was only natural to build a meeting place for people to get through these difficult times. Metro City unsurprisingly had a powerful and positive impact on countless Residents. Aesu states “I credit Second Life for helping me stay sane while I stayed home! Over the span of the pandemic, Second Life gave me hope and I was able to stay mentally healthy because I could continue to be social even though I was locked inside.”

Metro City has an inviting aesthetic that is clean and modern, and yet ambiguous enough for it to exist anywhere in the world. This speaks to Aesu’s focus on inclusivity on a global level: “Although we're primarily in the USA, we have visitors and regulars from all over the world spanning many different time zones. And thankfully we have translators so we can all communicate with ease.”

Chat with friends at a cafe or take a peaceful stroll through a tree-lined courtyard or park. Metro City offers the tranquility of a perfect fall afternoon. There is also a steady stream of events! To name a few: trivia and other game nights, live DJs and performers, regular photo contests, themed parties, pop-up events, shopping and more.

Aesu would also like to inform people that “We are home to many full time Residents who either live in our main social region or in one of our "Metro City Destination" regions… Our staff of experienced managers are on-call most of the day to help new Residents with almost anything they could need.”

Visit Metro City today for a huge dose of relaxation and good vibes.

Second Life Destinations: Ashemi Remarkable

Second Life Destinations

Take a look at Ashemi Remarkable, an artfully constructed futuristic city inspired by Asian culture.

Creators Ime Poplin and Jay met about eight years ago. They are both artistically inclined, with Ime painting in her spare time and Jay playing the guitar. Given their mutual interests, they decided to build together in SL. When picking a theme, their longtime shared tastes included “An interest in Asian items {and} culture, and also futuristic vibes. We thought.. well, let's do a kind of futuristic-styled {region} to begin with.”

Building came naturally to Ime, as she tells us, “Growing up in Denmark, the country where Lego was invented, I {am} used to tearing down and building new and just playing around. Building blocks, all the items we buy in SL… the many, many cool and talented creators, tons of items {are essentially} building blocks, in both Jay’s and my inventory.”

Ashemi Remarkable is a stellar example of what takes exceptional design to the next level; every part of this region has a story, and that makes it come alive. In the middle of the city, one finds a spooky cemetery with a mysterious volcanic eruption. What happened here? Check out the sky high restaurant with glass walls so you can enjoy a romantic dinner with a panoramic view. What types of people come here?

One of the most visually striking design elements of Ashemi Remarkable is the artwork on the street. Paintings abound in varying styles, hanging above storefronts and in businesses. These paintings bring a human touch to the concrete and bright lights, reminding us who created all of this. This speaks to Ime’s process: “The fact that we have a nice balance with nature and urban scenery is very important to us. We like balance, darks and colors and contrasts.”

This sprawling urban playground blends traditional and modern decor to pay homage to the past and give a playful glimpse of what the future might hold. Ime thinks of this place as “A world for us to experiment. Always evolving, always changing. That is very important to us. And then of course, the fact that we love being together as much as we can. That is what makes us happy. Jay is my muse, and I'm pretty sure I am his as well.”

Linden Lab

This week we immerse ourselves in the surreal digital art of Mistero Hifeng at Cammino e Vivo Capovolto.

Upon landing, the region feels like an art gallery crossed with a movie set: the type of thing that would cost millions of dollars in the physical world but can be created by anybody in Second Life.

Mistero’s style blends the abstract with symbolic imagery seamlessly. The use of light and water are key. Slow moving raindrops and a moving floor of water that looks like glimmering mercury... There are also several clocks strewn about haphazardly, perhaps an homage to Dali, one of the great figures of Surrealist art.

Abstract humanoid sculptures can be found throughout the space, often embracing each other. While they may seem plain from far away, closer inspection reveals that they express a wide range of emotions. The amount of detail given offers the hint of a narrative but the rest is a mystery for guests to put together. What is the purpose of the train tracks that lead nowhere? Mistero is indeed mysterious: he does not comment on the purpose of his installations. He does not offer any help to interpret it, which makes it even more powerful!

This region is a shining example of Second Life’s ability to serve as a conduit to one’s imagination. Come see Mistero Hifeng’s art today to experience the unique art of the metaverse.

Second Life Destinations: Hanging Gardens of Babylon

Second Life Destinations

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon masterfully blends the serenity of ancient artwork with stunning virtual architecture.

Creator Patch Thibaud is actually an architect in the physical world as well, and his years of experience inform every detail of this majestic locale. After observing some work on Patch’s Flickr, Resident Crista reached out to him to build a region for her. Of the request, Patch says, “I agreed to participate as long as I got to do The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, which was an ideal subject; an evocative and romantic concept, monumental in scale - and nobody has any idea what the original looked like, if in fact it existed at all.”

Patch’s affinity for building in the metaverse is strengthened by the fact that “there is no one in between me and the final result; I don't have to deal with contractors, estimators, building codes, etc.,” and yet there are limitless possibilities. Furthermore, Patch feels that “in all 3D modeling software I am familiar with, you are working in an abstract, gridded space. In SL I am used to working outdoors, with a beautiful sky and perhaps with beautiful water, and the context of an entire world.”

The concept of storytelling has been incorporated into many visual art forms, and as a trained designer, Patch adopted an episodic approach to the immense project. Patch created an extensive history for the estate: “This build imagines a structure originally built in mud brick by the Assyrians; later seized and rebuilt in stone by the Romans; {eventually} acquired by a cardinal during the military struggles of Renaissance Italy, who rebuilt the temple complex at the summit to include a villa for him and pleasure gardens and pavilions; subsequent alterations and additions by the cardinal’s family, including the ballroom and the Moroccan Garden; and finally the current owner, who restored the whole structure and its gardens, and inserted a gallery for art, built in the modern style.”

Crista is also a longtime Resident, having started her inworld adventures 14 years ago. For Crista, Second Life is “a part of myself… part of my life and {it has} taught me many things that made me what I am now, in RL and SL. I am one person living in two different worlds. A wonderful SL can make a better RL. The Gardens were my SL dream for years… A ton of thanks to Patch Thibaud, I am not sure if we have a better builder. Sharing the beauty he makes, {as well as the} sensations and feelings deriving from it, is the biggest pleasure and satisfaction in this world.”

Second Life Destinations: Popular Clubs

Second Life Destinations

Music is priceless; it can strengthen social bonds and turn an acquaintance into a lifelong friend. It is also one of the most effective ways to get people connected in a virtual world.

For close to two decades, Residents in Second Life have been using the power of music and virtual dancing to express themselves and interact with others. The Music category of the Second Life Destination Guide is filled with hundreds of venues playing all genres of music.

In this week’s destinations video, we are featuring six of the most popular clubs in Second Life, according to our data. Along with the music category, these clubs are also listed in the Popular Places category, which showcases some of the most visited places in SL that are great for socializing and newcomer-friendly, so there are no scripted newbie kickers, payment info restrictions, or adult ratings - all are welcome!

Exhale Dance Club is a great example of how there is literally never a dull moment in Second Life. DJs from all over the world play live mixes 24/7 in this sleek club with a huge dance floor, neon lights, and a peek of the nighttime city skyline through the windows. Exhale’s vibe features a variety of music genres including EDM, trap, hip hop, electro, techno, house, and trance. Visitors can also enjoy special themed events like  DJ battles. There is ample space for letting loose as well as chatting, and sometimes the DJs will make a shout out to individual patrons!

Big Daddy’s Rock Club has been a den of good vibes in SL for over a decade, changing the decor seasonally to keep things fresh. This open air dance floor also has a huge outdoor space to catch your breath and explore. Follow the walkway of Hollywood-like stars to get to know the history of the venue and some notable Residents. And just in case you need a last minute outfit change, Big Daddy’s Mall is right next door. Posters throughout the club offer Residents news of current events and ways to get more connected with the virtual world. Visit today to hear classic and contemporary jams as well as one-of-a-kind mashups.

Fogbound Blues is a laidback and rustic music venue where visitors can grab a seat at the bar, explore the dance floor, or lean against the jukebox to take it all in. The club opened in 2009 and over time gained a loyal following of music loving patrons. Owner Yanik tells us “Looking at it now with 70 avatars in the room, the best blues DJs in SL, and a full 24-hour schedule, it's light years ahead of what I hoped. It has become home for so many regulars. A social hub where friends gather. It's a community. Some depend on it to battle loneliness, sickness, to still feel somehow alive in this crazy era. It's now bigger than me. It's theirs, and I make sure it stays that way.”

Muddy’s Music Cafe is a slice of paradise for those in search of a beach vacation. Surrounded by glistening waves, this oasis offers an intimate dance floor and a lounge area with a pool table and piano. The decor is playfully casual, almost like a house party with a pile of records in one corner, musical instruments and statement pieces to serve as great conversation starters for even the shyest of Residents.

Las Muchachas is a Latin dance club with a casual dress code. You’ll hear everything from samba to salsa, mambo, merengue, flamenco, chacha, lambada, and more! The dance floor has the aesthetic of a wooden dock, as if your cruise ship just landed at this tropical locale with a view of the city off in the distance. Grab a festive drink, dance, and enjoy conversation in the cabana.

One of the walls in Peak Lounge is emblazoned with the phrase “When words fail, music speaks,” and we can’t agree more. This ultralounge features DJs from all over the world playing a variety of dance music. The decor feels like a celestial dream, with a modern lounge area flowing seamlessly into the dance floor and DJ booth. It comes as no surprise that Peak hosts exclusive fashion events, with stylish outfits and accessories available for purchase in the entryway. Peak Lounge expertly balances intrigue and hospitality, making all visitors feel welcome.

In the new year, explore new places and make new memories!

Holidays Made in SL

Second Life Destinations

This week we are bringing you five Residents from all over the world who each bring their unique voices and experiences to the Second Life Blogger Network.

Lexy Nexen Headshot.jpg

Lexy Nexen is the owner of Wild Branch Brewery as well as a Second Life YouTuber, where she shares her love of exploration and food. Wild Branch is a craft brewery experience, the first of its kind in Second Life. Lexy tells us it was inspired by “times in life prior to the pandemic, where being in the community of a brewery was a time to bond and make memories with friends, family or even complete strangers over a pint of beer and some good ole board games.” For Lexy, Wild Branch is a chance to “{exchange} real human interaction during the pandemic” in an environment tied to both a specific subculture and of course, warmth and openness to others.

Miwa Bunny, who has been in SL for over a decade, tells us that “during the pandemic Second Life became a source of both income and stability, I was able to make connections, meet new friends and keep in touch with all of them.” Miwa manages several brands on top of blogging, with some of her favorite aspects of SL being self-expression and connection. For Miwa, being inworld is “almost like a meditation… for my mental health.” We love to see Residents encouraging others to take care of themselves!

It allows women to meet others from all over the world and gets them out of their comfort zone.” Aurora also made an accompanying magazine for this organization, and she has a YouTube channel where she engages in “meaningful conversations with people all over the grid to discuss topics {that} allow people to share their experiences and perspectives during their journey in SL.” Aurora stresses the value of these shared experiences during the pandemic as a “reminder that we are all going through this together… it’s a different type of connection.”

Oema tells us “I care about communication {and} spreading helpful information to old and new members. So together with some talented friends, we created 360 GRADI: a magazine that talks about fashion, virtual psychology, destinations, art, photography, and music.” 360 Gradi is hosted on her VIRTUALITY blog, and has become a collaborative effort with many other talented Residents, who she gives immense thanks to for all of their contributions over the years. In Oema’s words, “During the time of the pandemic, Second Life helped distract me. Even now during the Christmas holidays, this incredible metaverse called Second Life, where users can create and give expression to their imagination, is a pleasant daily fixture.”

Victoria James Headshot.png

Victoria James is a Second Life explorer, shopper, and blogger. Victoria first signed up for SL a decade ago and tells us “I still love logging into Second Life because there is always something new to discover. New regions to explore, new stores to go shopping at (and old favorites), and of course being creative with my own blogging and photography.” It is our honor to share that, like countless others, Victoria found something priceless in SL: “Second Life changed my life… I actually met my husband in Second Life.” They’ve been married for over four years! It is often hard to describe exactly what SL is, and Victoria puts it perfectly with, “To me it’s not a game, it’s an extension of real life.”

Second Life Destinations: 2021 Winter Attractions

Second Life Destinations

It’s hard to pick where to start with all the winter fun in SL, but here's a curated selection with some behind the scenes info on what inspired these creators!

Crisp Kringle is a wholesome Swedish hamlet on the Frogmore region. Creator Tolla tells us, “I wanted to create a small village deeply covered in snow with a feeling of Swedish lapland, small vintage shops, merchantiles, bakeries, coffee, mulled wine, and of course toys.” Crisp Kringle is open to all Residents, and rumor has it that you can feed carrots to Santa’s reindeer. Get cozy and treat yourself to a Fika today.

Next up is Peaceful Dreams, where the rolling hills are covered in powdery snow and a soft blue glow provides an ethereal sense of wonder. Creator Vega was inspired by “That feeling of the first snowfall, when the snowflakes hit your face and it feels magical. That peaceful walk down a snowy path, with nothing but the sound of your feet crunching in the snow, and finally, that kiss you share with your loved one in a sleigh ride through the snow.” Peaceful Dreams is the perfect place for a romantic winter adventure or a quiet solo moment to appreciate beauty and creativity.

Where Our Journey Begins is a photogenic wonderland offering many interactive winter activities. Experience the snow fall around you, coating the trees in soft white, and don’t miss out on the view of the glowing sky from a ski lift. Exquisitely carved gazebos and fountains give this region a rustic flair. Creator Vivian feels that “During the pandemic it is especially important to have places where one feels happy and content and {can} share these places with others, because these hard times are affecting all of us. Our place is here for people to meet and experience the holidays together.”

Snowdrift has a playfully surreal tone, with a chandelier at the entrance and reindeer with ornate antlers covered in lights and ornaments. Creator Whimsy has a very special relationship with Second Life: “After a near fatal car accident resulting in traumatic brain injury ended an 18 year career, SL gave me an outlet to stay connected and meet new people while I was homebound recovering.” Whimsy is now a mixed media artist who describes SL as “a lifeline to keep my creative spirit alive,” as one can see by visiting this enchanting region that melds natural beauty with a fairy tale aesthetic.

Inspire Space Park, co-owned by Delain Canucci, Jamilah "JaMee" Rossini, and Bonny Greenwood, is sort of a cultural institution. This region has been around for almost as long as SL itself, and the winter makeover will take your breath away. Cute forest critters, Ice skating, and the characteristic floating meteors are just a few of the things that make this place so special. Delain tells us, “What we did at Inspire with winter is to show people that even though we are in space, we still love to see beautiful environments. We will never change the main look of the park, but with special seasons we will decorate and try to make landscapes that leave people in awe.” This blend of science museum and winter wonderland is truly something that could only be found in SL. Jamilah has been visiting Inpsire Space Park for over 15 years, saying, “I will never forget that first time stepping into space. I was in awe at the sight I was seeing and how incredible it felt being in space, even though it was virtual… These three individuals (the original creators Earth, Raphael and Grafx, who recently passed away) came together and built a place to chill, meet others from all over the world and enjoy the music. I found home here.”

Now that you have a diverse set of options to choose from, we hope to see you inworld today! Ice skating, snowboarding, skiing and more are just a click away.

Enjoy next level watch parties in SL with the new Film Threat virtual cinema experience!

“We’re amazed at how Linden Lab was able to bring the spirit of Film Threat to life in this virtual space and thrilled that we’ll be able to conduct screenings and other special events in a whole new way,” says Chris Gore, founder of Film Threat. “It’s our hope to grow this venue and events to engage with Film Threat and indie film fans around the world.” Film Threat is the leading independent film news and review site, offering the scoop on the latest releases as well as curated picks from past decades.

Inspired by theaters and film festivals from the physical world, this two-story virtual cinema venue offers a unique and immersive way to experience movies. The space was first revealed back in July for Kickstarter backers of Gore’s upcoming Attack of the Doc documentary as part of an exclusive sneak peek. Second Life Destinations: Laurel's Halloween Nightmare

Second Life Destinations

Explore the haunted theme park at Laurel’s Halloween Nightmare, with 19 horror movie scenes from classics like Frankenstein to modern horror like Saw. Scares lurk around every corner in this dazzling monument to all things frightful.

Creator Laurel Bradders (a.k.a. Baby Ghoul) is a Halloween fanatic, telling us “This is my fourth annual haunted theme park. I try to go bigger every year and top what I did the prior season.” This labyrinthine region changes stylistically as you go deeper, encompassing everything from Medieval castles to whimsical spookiness to futuristic nightmares. Don't be afraid to get lost: teleport portals will transport you from scene to scene.

The dedication is real, with Laurel putting in almost a year's worth of planning into each build: “My friends think I am crazy but, starting every January, I begin buying and collecting new ideas for the upcoming Halloween season. I get custom work done by script and mesh creators in SL.”

As thrilling as Laurel’s work is, the inspiration comes from a poignant effort to memorialize someone very special. Laurel explains, “I do it for my mom really. I lost her in 2015 and she was a huge horror genre fan. We used to watch all the spooky movies together and decorate as much as possible for Halloween. She made it great every year!” This labor of love is beyond impressive, with references to “Dracula to Kong vs. Godzilla with some Freddy Krueger and Pinhead thrown in as well!”

Halloween is one of the biggest events in the virtual world, and you don’t want to miss out on the hard work of a Resident who is clearly an expert on the subject. If you don’t know where to start, Laurel has groups on Facebook and Discord that can connect you with others in search of a good fright!

Come see Laurel’s Halloween Nightmare for yourself, if you think you’ll live to tell the tale.

Second Life Destinations: Hauntings

Second Life Destinations

Kick off a month packed with virtual scares at Hauntings, an eerie region that gives ghost towns another meaning.

Although creator Bekks Heartsong was introduced to SL by her brother 14 years ago, she tells us that “I was very confused and not grasping the concept… Fast forward maybe eight years: I 'accidentally' ended up in an older virtual world (that's another story) and learned how to build houses there, but once I became bored of it I attempted SL on a different account again, started learning to navigate and… stayed.”

A quick visit to Hauntings is an excellent reminder to not be discouraged if you ever have trouble navigating the virtual world. Look at how far Bekks came! In fact, Bekks says “I am still here because I absolutely love the creativity of it all. I think I'm doing pretty well decorating,  then go see a great region and realize I have a lot more to learn.” Second Life is always evolving, but that is precisely because of the ingenuity of Residents.

A walk around Hauntings is like a walk through one of your childhood favorite Halloween movies. A clearing in the forest reveals a Slenderman-like being, creepy corn stalks, and of course, a haunted house. Don’t forget to look up! A menacing dragon is perched above, breathing fire on all who dare to approach.

You will also encounter a spooky stage covered in a rolling fog. Bekks tells us “Among many other events I host "Almost Live" Karaoke on my region. It is not live but almost, hence the name. It was established in 2018. Singers send hosts pre-recorded share links from their fave karaoke app (SingSnap, Smule, etc.). Avatars perform onstage while the link is streamed on an external browser. It's an amazing group of very supportive people. It's perfect for those of us who do NOT wish to sing live, but enjoy sharing our songs.”

Visit Hauntings today for a perfect mix of goofy fun and scary ambience.

Second Life Destinations: Cann!bal

Second Life Destinations

Escape to the inviting environment and soothing sounds of Cann!bal, a tropical paradise that has been in development for over 10 years in Second Life.

Now on its own estate and spanning four adjacent regions, Cann!bal has been a work of love by Chotaire Seelowe

Here’s a description of the inspiration for Cann!bal in Chotaire’s own words:

“I've always loved beaches in real life, so when I came to SL in 2006, I randomly started searching for terms like "Hawaii" or "Bora Bora" and  found "Bora Bora Isles," a Polynesian beach that was actually built by the owner. I realized that it is a rare sight to find an estate where the owner actually created the content and didn't just buy it from random stores. It impressed me. And I had this feeling, if I only tried hard enough, I could even make something more realistic, something even better.

Never in my life have I enjoyed programming, but I realized to create something really unique I would have to learn scripting as well. That's how I became a scripter. I got my own region for Cannibal Island to showcase all of this and become my own landlord.

Then, when mesh got introduced into SL, I had to accept that one person can't do it all, so I started showcasing other people's builds too. This is how I got in touch with other creators and we started to cooperate. I still work for many of them. Today Cann!bal Island still pretty much looks like it did in 2011, except that due to weekly updates everything is much more polished and always makes use of the latest technology offered by Linden Lab.”

Chotaire clearly loves the challenge of invention that Second Life offers and appreciates being able to create environments that can then be seen by other Residents, and experiences that will stay with them for a long time to come.

Take the teleport to Cann!bal Island and see it for yourself -- you might even lose yourself in its lush environment or perhaps in one of its many dance clubs!

Second Life Destinations: The Looking Glass

Second Life Destinations

Explore a more cryptic envisioning of fantasy at The Looking Glass, where enchantment and dark secrets abound.

Creators Marcus Inkpen and Sharni Azalee have been selling a wide range of items related to fantasy under The Looking Glass brand since 2011. Marcus tells us they were brought together by a mutual passion, saying “We were both into the darker Alice in Wonderland type whimsical fantasy stuff and we've been exploring that ever since.”

The Looking Glass is a large region that could take hours to explore. From the long bridge leading to a mysterious castle to the beautiful floating islands, the amount of detail in every component is reminiscent of many iconic works of fantasy that have been uniquely interpreted by Marcus and Sharni. Sharni says, “We have tried to make a region that is entwined with many genres so that everybody can find their ‘special spot’ there. {It’s} especially wonderful to see when people take the time to find the little hidden areas in the region.

If you are feeling a little stressed out, The Looking Glass is the perfect place to let your worries float away. Sharni tells us “SL for me is an escape from the pressures of r/l. I have a very stressful r/l job, so to be able to log into SL and relax and get lost in a creative bubble is a perfect balance. The friends I have met here from all over the world give me a wonderful reason to keep coming back.”

In addition to photogenic exploration, Marcus tells us that The Looking Glass hosts “regular events with live music, DJs and particle shows. Everything you could ask for! Sharni and I have also been involved in all of the Fantasy Faires since the beginning and we are looking forward to it every year.”

Come visit The Looking Glass today to experience a different side of fantasy in the virtual world.

Note: There is an art exhibit of Marcus' r/l alter ego J Matthew Root at http://jmrart.com, as well as a store of select merchandise in the basement that is also available on the Second Life Marketplace.

Second Life Destinations: Deer River

Second Life Destinations

Come enjoy the tranquility of the wilderness and the earthy colors of fall at Deer River.

Creator Kess Crystal has been a Resident for years, enjoying a multifaceted virtual journey. In fact, Kess believes that “everyone’s experience is different and can also change over the years. Back when I first joined SL I was a DJ in a rock club, my own rock club, so I had started to live in the entrepreneurial worlds of SL even back then.”

Last winter you may have visited Snowdrops, another region Kess created. Encouraged by the experience, Kess tells us, “Autumn/Fall is my favourite season and I started to get the urge to create something for Autumn while binge watching a series called Virgin River on Netflix.” Bodies of water and the grace of their movement play a big role in the atmosphere in Deer River. From the stunning azure blue of the river to the breathtaking waterfall and ponds, there is a palpable sense of wonder from being close to the water here. In fact, Kess says the waterfall was a direct homage to the show, and that “fans of the show will notice a lot of nods to the series… the log cabin, the food truck both feature, as well as of course the river that runs throughout the region.”

Deer River is filled with opportunities for bucolic recreation. Put on your hiking boots and explore the numerous trails, go horseback riding, and stop off at the outdoor cafe for a pumpkin spice latte.

Kess succinctly describes the inspiration behind this woodland reverie: “My vision was to create a photogenic seasonal {region} where the natural beauty of the colours of the season are the star.”

Kess is also the co-owner of Seraphimsl.com, saying “through that, I get to meet a lot of the incredibly talented creators whose work I use to create my scenes. Second Life has brought me many real life friendships… It’s the bonds with those people that keep us in this wonderful world.”

Drop in for a soothing dose of nature at Deer River today, but be sure to watch out for the wily raccoons that like to hide by the camping tents to steal some snacks!

Second Life Destinations: Shadezar

Second Life Destinations

Go back in time by visiting Shadezar, a fantasy roleplaying region inspired by the Mediterranean and Middle East.

A notecard given by creator Hera/Zee9 at the region’s entrance reads: “You may ask: Why am I in an attic, in a nursery? For as long as I can remember I have wanted to do a Neverland for adults. I even came up with a name for it, Neverworld X…” This starting point emphasizes the experience of being transported to a fantasy world, and has teleports to Vanesha, also referred to as Neverworld X, and Shadezar. You are instantly taken to a world of domed buildings and colorful tilework, surrounded by sand and sea that exudes a timeless sense of romance.

Shadezar is fantasy, sword and sorcery roleplay. It bears intricate recreations of architectural styles from different points in history such as Roman Antiquity and Ancient Persia. A notecard gives the following as story background: “This is the age of Iron, called the Formorian Age. There is only one great land mass called Gargantua, split into 5 main regions. The burning deserts of Samhara are located in the midlands. Shadezar  is the largest City in the Samhara Desert. Built upon a rocky outcrop, on a small island that splits the great Namhar river,  before it flows into the Sarazin Sea.”

The atmosphere of Shadezar is built upon respect for the thematic elements and roleplay experience. Please check out notecards from Hera for rules on the dress code and what type of weapons are allowed so that Residents can seamlessly engage with others and have fun. There is also information on the types of characters available (priests, merchants, beggars, etc.)  for those who are new. This exact location within the region has more information on the roleplay: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Cloud%20Lake/90/116/22

Hera has built and taken down many places in SL over the years; Shadezar is the result of combining old memories of virtual creations into one grand location.
