Would you share all the details of you avatar?

Once in a while someone will ask me where my clothes are from and I usually give it out. No one has ever asked about every single detail of my avatar and I'm not sure I'd answer them.

Would you give some random avatar all the details of your avatar? What body, head, skin, hair, eyes, clothes? Or would you keep it a secret so you don't have a complete clone of yourself running around SL?

If anyone inquires about something that could easily be found via a scanner or inspecting, I wouldn't be opposed to answering.

Skin and shape are a little different - can't refer them to the creator of the shape as that would be myself (and I'm not selling it, it's mine!), and skin just feels a little too personal. Same with BOM clothes, if someone asks where my alt's knickers or bra are from it would be kind of creepy as that's an inferred confession of peeking up her skirt or down her blouse.

I used to do this all the time on Flickr - every item worn listed out on each fashion photo. In-world, nobody's ever asked.

I'd never bother keeping it a secret as many items I wear are pretty hard to find unless they shop as much as I do and don't mind paying occasionally pricey group fees. I've got a good mix of self-made custom accessories, gachas, new and older group gifts, items from retired stores, and retired SLUV products no longer being sold.

I'd tell them. I tell people all the time. People assume I have a maitreya body, but it's not, it's Lucybody Atenea. I also tell people where I get my skin, hair, clothes, eyes, whatever they want to know. I especially tell them if they were free, because why the hell wouldn't I?

My shape I made myself, so no one will really copy it anyway, but if they asked I'd give them numbers there too if they wanted them. It doesn't matter what other avs look like, they're still not me, or run by me. I'm the only me there is.

That I know of, anyway.

I mean, why not? I would, but it'd take ages; I cram about 50 BOM layers on top of whatever skin so it's unrecognizable, and I frankenstein my own shapes. Half my clothes are linked together--so scanning would be infuriating if you'd try to find out that way. Hard pressed to find someone who'd want to look like any of my characters, though. They tend to be of niche appeal.

I don't mind giving people information about my outfits, shoes, hair, etc. If they ask nicely, I even will provide a landmark where they can get the item or items. If it still available. There have been times I've been asked about my shape. LIke many others it is my own personal shape I created to my specifications so that is just a plain no to anyone who asks.

I doubt it, but honestly the question has never come up. The random person rarely asks me anything, especially something as personal as the details of my avatar and her clothing. The most I get from a close friend is usually "Nice dress.  Where'd you get it?"  I guess if that hypothetical person ever did ask, I'd probably just give a short answer and walk away.

I've never had anyone ask me for this type of information before.  For clothes or shoes I'd probably tell them both where the item was from and what it was called.  I'd probably tell them what brand body or head, if they asked. For skin or eyes, I'd probably just tell them what store they were from, but not which specific item or color.  If they asked about my shape, I'd just tell them that it is a custom shape I created myself.

Why would you walk away? It seems unfriendly. I suggest staying and chatting.

Because asking what hair or skin or clothes you use, does NOT automatically make them somebody you WANT to socialise with.

If a Gorean Incel asked me where I got my hairstyle so he could gift it to one of his victims, I might tell him, but that doesn't mean I want to socialise with him, or accept a friend request, or submit for pixel r*pe, torture and murder, so he gets his jollies.

SL is NOT a "social platform", it is a platform where you CAN be social, if you WANT to. There's a very genuine difference. You might KNOW that if you ACTUALLY used SL, at all.

I have no problems sharing skin, eyes, hair, body, and clothing details. The more potential customers going to my favorite creators, the merrier.  But my shape is one thing I prefer to keep to myself.

Staying and chatting might be an option, true, but only if it was the end of that conversation. My guess is that a random person stopping to ask detailed questions about my avatar wouldn't be particularly interested in chatting about other things, so in the end it would amount to the same thing.  We'd both walk away.  ;)

Probably? I think it would depend on the how and the why. Nothing about my shape or the choice of textures seems all that unique. It's fairly generic. Everything else they could already siphon off with a free HUD so why not use the chance to chat a bit about things? Yah, I think I would.

I don't mind giving out info for clothes, hair, etc., but definitely not my shape, and probably not my skin. If I wanted to give out info on those, I'd open a shape shop of my own.

Incidentally, I was once IMed at a clothing store by a shape seller, asking if I would sell her my shape, skin, and eye details. WTF? Isn't she supposed to be making her own? And she also  creepily added, "I don't need the outfit details, I already got those." Um, whut??? 😒

When I worked in a new resident help capacity I had a profile pick with details of where to get all body items and links to some of the more popular (way back then) store that existed for male avatars. At the end of it I encouraged people to be inspired by others looks but not to copy them - take the information provided by myself and others as a foundation for something new that they create for themselves.

Of course it was all a lot easier to help out back then as it was all pre-mesh bodies and heads so did not require a huge initial investment by new residents.

I'd tell them, and they'll still never make a clone of me because I made my skin myself.

It’s happened a few times. I have no problem telling where I got things. I’ll tell you where it gets weird: when they start asking for your shape or to take them to every store you just listed. Not landmarks….take them and show them.

Every…..single….item
