Second Life Destinations - Urban City

Second Life Destinations

Experience a vibrant metropolis at Urban City, where you can enjoy exciting clubs, endless shopping, apartments for rent, and more!

An urban neighborhood in the Humboldt County region, Urban City has residential areas where you can enjoy real city living by renting apartments or a whole parcel. With a town square, pubs, and many shopping areas you will always feel you are at the heart of downtown.

Adjacent to Urban City is the Urban Neighborhood, in the Laurel Canyon region (see a California theme here? We do!), where the expansive Fantasy Pixels store is facing the waterfront. For the more spacious rentals, Urban Neighborhood has you covered with - ironically? - suburban size plots.

If you want to roam the streets, engage in moderate roleplay, hang out with your friends and witness how the various construction sites quickly transform into exciting new parts of the neighborhood, hop on over to Urban City now.

And if you like the effort Ѳѕzч Ͼʰᵘ Ͼѳййаllч and crew put into this place, you can donate to the parking meter. Find the hungry little object right next to the food truck, the one that sells “Little Monster Skull Ice Cream” as you look out over the water and contemplate if a downtown penthouse or a white-picket fence enclosed Victorian is the right crib for you.

Second Life Destinations - Toxian City

Second Life Destinations

Explore the dark corners of Toxian City in Second Life, where dystopia meets supernatural wonder. Every street tells a story, and every shadow hides a secret.

Learn more from the co-owner of Toxian City, Mazikeen Aurelia.

“Established in 2007, Toxian City is a dark urban role-play destination set in a semi-futuristic dystopian city where vampires and werewolves, angels and demons, but also felines, cybernetics, and humans co-exist.  Some call it a sanctuary for supernatural beings.

Evil creatures, determined to take over the city, roam the streets from time to time. Citizens can also visit the dungeon to fight rewarding monsters and train their fighting skills.

Toxian City is also the home of the grandfather of all combat systems in SL: DCS (est. 2007). We are currently also experimenting with the options for quest storylines for citizens to complete and interact with.

Even though the region is built for role-playing purposes, a social aspect is definitely also an important purpose. This current region was built for the community and as the place we all always called home.

Even after 17 years for Dimentox and almost 16 years for myself, Second Life is still a super fun place. It has been a creative outlet for us but also a place where we can hang out with friends from all over the world and a place where we can meet new people.

Big thanks for making Toxian City such a long-lasting success has to go to:

  • Shepherd, the owner of 'Wishing Well Fountains’ store. He helped us a lot by providing awesome Animesh characters we use as NPCs.
  • Another person we would like to mention and thank here is Duckie Dickens.
  • And lastly, we want to do a special shout-out to our current Lead GM Trixxy Galaxy, for her many years of help, love, and support to us and Toxia and to our current GMs Karanna Lisa, Darion Hyun, and Oak Quinn for their hard work and devotion.

Of course also a big thank you to all our previous staff members and all of our citizens and members for believing in us and Toxian City.”

Teleport over now to this sanctuary of stories, battles, and community.

Second Life Destinations - The Leviathan Bay

Second Life Destinations

Dive into a world of new possibilities at Leviathan Bay in Second Life, where a city once thriving, was hit with a mysterious disaster and is now flooded and taken over by sea life!

Ziekling Bunnyhug started this community over 8 years ago and tells us more about it in her own words:

“Our community can be as hard to define as Second Life itself. It's not exactly a place to role-play, but it has a story. It's not exactly a dance club, but we do have musical events with DJs and live musicians too.

I've been taking inspiration from RL cities that I've been to, places I would like to see, places I've explored in other games, and mashed it all together.

We also have a lovely little art gallery in the center of the city, run by one of our own long-term staff members, Apple, showcasing her real-life artwork.

Meanwhile, our original builder HG will be hosting her own Groovi Movie which is a drive-in theater up the road, with its own sunflower beach and community area.

Under the water, we have the sunken city and if you explore the subways it will lead you to Leviathan's Lair, sometimes even featuring Cerberus (who owns the region) himself!”

When asked what Second Life means to her, Ziekling tells us:

“Second Life is my creative outlet, it's a mirror I look into that reflects my dreams and desires, but the most important thing it has been for me is a home. I've moved a lot IRL, to different cities, states, and even another country. It is hard to make friends just to say goodbye to them shortly after. In SL I am able to keep meaningful relationships close no matter where I end up physically.

Creativity was always a part of my life. I was into drawing, painting, the typical art forms you learn in school, lots of doodling, and lots of daydreaming. I always had a world inside my head and in SL it's not only a way for me to enter it, but I can bring other people to that world too.”

Second Life Destinations - The Endless Graveyard

Second Life Destinations

Something is amiss at The Endless Graveyard. Explore the tranquil, yet eerie forest and you may stumble upon a doorway to the supernatural.

Creator Lady Death Valknut started with a story, and as this narrative became more elaborate, this vast and mysterious place came together.

According to Lady Death,

"The story begins in Sweden, in the Victorian era, in a small town near the Norwegian border.  This town was a booming mining town, with rich deposits of Iron, copper, silver, and gold.  The town was swollen with wealth and elite society as a result of the profits from the mining ventures.  Miners would traverse the forest each day to dig deeper and deeper in the mines to extract these precious metals.

However, unbeknownst to the miners, the town and forest existed near the only mortal doorway into the Underworld, the realm of Death herself.  Unexplained occurrences began to happen in the mine shafts.  Finally, one day after a blast of dynamite was used to open the next chamber of the mine, the gate to the Underworld fell open and the dead came screaming out like a tidal wave.”

As you walk around, subtle hints make it increasingly apparent that a macabre otherworldliness has enveloped this place. The dappled light that squeezes in from above is tinged with unnatural hues. Lanterns are shrouded in huge horns from animals that must look terrifying. Or are they carved bones?

Lady Death tells us, “For me, Second Life has always been a creativity outlet. It's the perfect place to combine my love of writing with my love of design. I have hundreds of stories in my head, and worlds to go with each of them. The theme of The Endless Graveyard is just one of those stories, and I chose it because it was one of the environments that best suited my character as Death.” As intricate as this region is, it is actually still being worked on and a full website will be available soon.

With SL, jumping right in and teleporting from place to place is a great way to get your bearings. This approach certainly worked for Lady Death: “I began Second Life by exploring places, getting lost in them, and finding hidden places. That is what made me fall in love with Second Life in the first place, and now I seek to create an environment destined to be explored, with hidden places that can only be found if one looks hard enough. I wish to pass on the joys I experienced in my newer days to the future Residents, something that sparks their imaginations and makes them think deeper about what they see on the surface.”

Do you dare face the dark presence that lurks in The Endless Graveyard? Discover hidden spots off the beaten path today.

Second Life Destinations - The 13th Cloud Hotel

Second Life Destinations

This Halloween, explore the creepy 13th Cloud Hotel, a destitute and broken-down asylum in Second Life.

The mysterious 13th Cloud Hotel is a collaboration between friends Lil Brat and Roxksie on the RoxkStudios region

Lil shares her inspiration for this haunted exhibit, “I wanted to try a floating asylum idea I had a few years ago, and we went for it. I love reading about all the spooky aspects of world history, in this case, asylums.

Roxksie found the project to be a perfect addition to her art region, “Lil approached me knowing that I make art installations in Second Life while owning and managing an art region so I offered her some space. Once the first part had been installed, I mentioned the idea of creating a maze with the hope of making something interactive to explore. This installation is a vehicle for telling the story of times gone past. The older medieval practices that doctors would perform on patients thinking that it could or would cure them of illnesses. Instead of understanding the science of what causes illnesses, they would use things like electric shock to “cure” the ailment or leeches.”

When asked what Second Life means to them, Roxksie shared that since joining SL at age 18 back in 2006 “... the world has become an addition to my real life, where I can do the things that I cannot afford to do offline such as take a weekend to sit on a tropical beach (I live in the UK so there isn’t a lot of tropical beaches to go to). In recent years I have learned to use Second Life as a medium for expressionism which is an addition to my offline real-world artwork. I enjoy creating fantastical immersive art displays and creations that others can interact with and explore.” You can see more of Roxksie’s interactive art on the Roxkstudios region.

Lil Brat also shares her feelings towards this virtual world, “Second Life means a lot to me. It’s a place where you can play with and show your creativity, hang out with friends and explore. There is so much to do and see and it really is an amazing place. Some of my best friends I met in Second Life.” Lil Brat’s other work can be seen at her Dollhouse Forest.

After completing work on the 13th Cloud Hotel, Lil and Roxksie invited friends Squizzle, Echo, and Monki to assist in the 2nd installment of the asylum, called The 700's Labyrinth. This is the horror maze where inmates from the asylum were released into a final realm. Explore if you dare!

Halloween is the perfect season to do all of the above in our virtual universe: create, express yourself, hang with friends, supplement RL with tropical surroundings and, if you dare, creep people out by visiting an old spooky asylum, in the clouds!

Additional help for 13th Cloud Hotel was provided by Ramisaa Gothly (Scripting Assistance with the Asylum), Solace Tigerpaw (maker of the famous TeaCup Carousel), and Finn Zeddmore (Narrative ideas)

Second Life Destinations - Puerto Banana

Second Life Destinations

Explore Puerto Banana, an eclectic little fishing harbor, inspired by the wonderful creativity of Second Life Residents.

After being involved with other artistic venues and ventures in Second Life, Louna Perl and Boro decided they wanted to create their own space based around fun, creativity, and nice chance encounters with other Second Life residents. Louna shares, “We do think SL is a wonderful way to unleash creativity, whether you're extremely talented or simply a normal human being with ideas that have not been realized yet.”

With no technical skills and an immense admiration for other Creators in Second Life, they dove right into creating Puerto Banana. Louna explains their process: “I'm a collector and I love pictures and paintings, but I also have a passion for objects. And in SL, there are absolutely fantastic creators of objects. From sculptures to simple tea cups, I'm often amazed by the details, the technical skills, beauty and inventiveness.”

“We do try to mix the atmospheres in what remains a small place, with the harbor full of surprises, a small gallery and a warehouse where we can gather with a few people to listen to music streamed by music lovers, without dancing, just to lie on a couch or a comfy chair and chat about music.”

This quaint little fishing harbor is not the only thing keeping them busy this summer together, and in collaboration with Gabryel Lamplight, they have started a new project called “Bears around the World” project. You can grab a bear and go on a photography adventure for a chance to win some prizes, but also have a lot of fun!

Take a stroll through this eclectic fishing harbor, participate in the bears around the world project and get your creative juices flowing!

Second Life Destinations - Palazzo Park

Second Life Destinations

Created as a love letter to Second Life, Palazzo Park embodies the essence of community and connection. A haven of joy and creativity, this voice-enabled paradise offers an array of attractions.

Learn more about it from the owner, Kacee Popstar.

How long have you been in Second Life, what do you do here, and what keeps you here?
I'm Kacee Popstar, and I initially joined around 2010. It wasn't until my return in August 2021 that I fully immersed myself in the Second Life community. If I look familiar to you, it's probably from Social Media where I'm known for real-time party promoting and posting fun club videos of the SL Music Scene with my partner in crime, Sugarplum Zsun. In-world, I began my journey managing DJ Fang Palazzo. I am also a graphic and web designer with a deep love for experiential marketing and branding. The possibilities and the incredible community keep me engaged in Second Life—there's always something new to explore, create, and experience.

When you came into SL, were you originally planning on doing something different than you do now, or did you come out of curiosity? What did you expect, and how has your experience since then differed from initial expectations?
Initially, I never intended to work in Second Life; my goal was simply to have fun. I dedicated a great amount of my time supporting fellow Residents, connecting people, and attending events because I believe the more enjoyable activities we have within Second Life, the greater the opportunity to foster growth within our community! If it is fun, I'm there! The shift into business within SL happened organically. I dipped my toes into designing by teaming up with a friend to launch DAO, a female clothing brand. This led to my having the honor of managing the marketing for emerging brands such as HexPosed and entertainment organizations like Sneaky Link Entertainment. The unexpected success of Palazzo Park highlights the transformative and unpredictable nature that makes Second Life truly special.

What is Palazzo Park?
Palazzo Park is like my little love letter to the Second Life community. Teleporting in and hearing people interact and laugh together warms my heart every single time! Fang and I receive letters from Residents, expressing their love for the Park, and it is what truly keeps us going. The community's positive feedback means the world to us. The Park was inspired by the desire to create a high-quality, voice-enabled space for the Second Life community to play and socialize. We offer a Movie Theater with private theaters equipped with syncing screens and security for privacy. We also have Bowling, Laser Tag, a Table Gaming Lounge, Bumper Cars, a Kids Zone, a fully interactive Arcade, Rides, Venue Rentals, and so much more. We are in the middle of an expansion so there is more to come!

How would you explain SL to family/friends/colleagues IRL who have no idea or perhaps have some vague notion from mainstream media?
I would describe Second Life as a funky, digital melting pot! A dynamic virtual world where creativity knows no bounds. It's a place where people from all walks of life come together to socialize, explore, and create. It's not just a game; it's a platform that mirrors the real world in so many ways, offering opportunities for self-expression, entrepreneurship, and building meaningful connections.

What is the magic of SL? Why has it survived amidst many other similar worlds/platforms?
What makes Second Life truly enchanting is the magic woven by its users and the unparalleled sense of community that emerges. Unlike other platforms, SL is like a canvas where each Resident contributes, collectively shaping the overall experience. It's this collaborative spirit and the adaptability of the platform that creates a genuinely unique environment. The beauty lies in Residents owning their creations, fostering a sense of pride and belonging. While VR promises immersive experiences, it hasn't quite captured the diverse and user-driven essence that makes Second Life so resilient and special.

What are your future plans in SL and RL? Can SL and RL mix?
I'm currently pouring my heart into expanding and revamping Palazzo Park! I'm also diving into the exciting relaunch of the Flourish Event, driven by my vision to shake up the world of shopping events by shining a spotlight on brands and their unique journeys. In real life, the integration of SL and RL is seamless for me. My experiences in the music scene in SL and working in the music industry in RL have intertwined, creating a dynamic and harmonious blend where both worlds enhance and complement each other, allowing for a seamless integration of my passions and pursuits.

Teleport to Palazzo Park, where fun meets imagination!

Second Life Destinations - November Rain

Second Life Destinations

Enjoy the last days of Autumn in a fall-themed café with a pumpkin spice brew as you listen to the soothing sounds of November Rain.

November Rain was built by SEMINΛ, a live musician who has been playing gigs around the grid since 2016.

SEMINΛ has an interesting way for the virtual world to boost her creative output in the physical world: as she works on new music in the physical world, she finds it comfortable to "park" her avatar at a Second Life destination that's inspiring. It helps spark creativity to surround herself with a certain environment. She says, “Pre-COVID meant visiting a lot of places and traveling in RL so it was quite comforting to find a little part of what was missing in RL at the moment, right in front of you, on the screen.”

SEMINΛ explains that November Rain actually came about on a warm midsummer night:
“I was tired of the heat and couldn't wait for pumpkin spice season so I thought, let's create it then! Me and my bestie Aurelia von Troubles wanted to open a little place of our own for the longest time where we could host different types of events. Our friend Ƶąȼƙ happened to have some leftover land so we thought, why not? I wanted to create a poetic place with some of my favorite things. Autumn, cozy cafés, the forest, gloomy indie music, sprinkled with a little bit of rock n roll (Guns’N Roses - November Rain), and of course: the sound of the pouring rain.”

SEMINΛ says to her there is a lot of beauty to be found in the gloomy darkness of things:
“It doesn't always have to be sunshine and rainbows for something to thrive in a good or positive way. I do read a lot of books and while building November Rain, I imagined this to be a place where a modern Jane Austen would come to relax. I'd sit in the corner of the café, secretly looking up at her from the lyrics in my notebook. She wouldn't notice me though…I'm a typical extroverted introvert and as much as I love the social part of SL, I also like to curl up alone with a hot drink at an autumn café in the woods, listen to music and the sound of … November Rain.”

Teleport now and find your inspiration at November Rain.

Second Life Destinations - New Frontiers

Second Life Destinations

Roleplay at New Frontiers, a SciFi community set in the year 2822 CC on the world of Onia!

Whether you are a roleplayer or just a casual explorer, New Frontiers invites everyone to join their community, create a character, engage in combat, or just wander around and explore a foreign and exciting world.

Via their Discord, community members keep in close contact and share ideas, lore, as well as resolve conflict the old-fashioned way, should armed combat fail to achieve the desired results: through diplomacy. The vast world of New Frontiers, with its myriad of different races and classes, is governed by clear rules and a comprehensive HUD system.

According to New Frontiers management:

"New Frontiers is a passion project. An attempt to deliver the science fiction roleplay experience we've always wanted to partake in. To give our players a place to tell their own stories. To signal boost and show off our amazing content creators. To provide the community of a giant bunch of nerds with material to argue the differences in faster than light technology until the early hours of the morning.

New Frontiers is not the work of any one person. Nor any single team. It is the blood, sweat and tears of dozens, if not hundreds of players, staff, artists, and photographers who all have come together to tell stories in a random, eclectic world where on one day you can be raiding some ancient tomb, the next you are going for a walk in the park."

Second Life Destinations - Missing Mile

Second Life Destinations

Step into the mysterious town of Missing Mile, tucked deep within North Carolina's woods. As you traverse its murky tunnel entrance, you're greeted by whispers of dark secrets. Is it a sanctuary for the supernatural or just the whispers of small-town myth?

Learn more from the town’s owner, Nothing (Loch Newchurch).

What is Missing Mile all about?

It started in 2006 as a desire to create a supernatural place of my own where I could role-play. I had finished reading a vampire book called "Lost Souls" by Poppy Z. Brite so I decided to name my land after the fictional town mentioned in the book. The sim is a mix of landmarks inspired by the book (such as the Sacred Yew Bar) and other buildings from pop culture (such as The House on Paper Street from “Fight Club” and the Quick Stop from the movie “Clerks”). Through the years it has transformed from a supernatural role-play sim to a place all kinds of avatars can take residence. Role-play is still encouraged but completely optional.

What inspires you to make stuff in Second Life?

I find inspiration in movies, games, or books I'm really into at the time. Second Life allows you to really immerse yourself in the fandom of your choice. Become your favorite character or feel like you're a part of their world or their story.

What does Second Life mean to you?

I've been in SL for about 17 years so it feels like a second home I feel I could never part with. It's a place where I can relax after a busy day and let creativity fly. A place where an introverted girl like me can interact a little easier with people from all over the world.

Your display name (Nothing) is interesting, tell us more about it.

This comes from the book “Lost Souls” I mentioned. Here's the quote that inspired me to use the name "Nothing”: “I am Nothing. He liked the name. It did not make him feel worthless; on the contrary, he began to think of himself as a blank slate upon which anything could be written. The words inscribed on his soul were up to him.”

Whether you're seeking intrigue or tales to tell, Missing Mile offers a uniquely captivating experience.

Second Life Destinations - Lost Lagoon

Second Life Destinations

Wander into Lost Lagoon, home to whimsical waterfalls and just the place for you to relax and get away from it all.

Ever walked around Second Life and found yourself lost in contemplation? The Lost Lagoon is one of those spots where you can indulge in some solitude while exploring all the hidden gems it has to offer. Make sure to turn up your sounds to hear the relaxing waves.

Alternatively, it can also be a place to meet or rather randomly bump into fellow explorers and strike up a conversation with someone who may come from a very different corner of the physical world than you.

The island is what you make it, just as you do with your avatar. The video proves that humans, furries, and the occasional teddy bear, can all hang out and play together.

As you explore, find a big hall with an astrology map serving as its roof on top of one of the hills on the island. Imagine the soft sounds of the old piano, slightly out of tune perhaps. Travel downhill to the beach, where strange artifacts from the distant past are overgrown with flowers and weeds alike. Walk the connected wooden walkways that safeguard the visitor from falling into the swampy water - but beware of possible alligators!

Built by Mark Knight and administered by Jana Guyot, Lost Lagoon is a quintessential Second Life destination that brings beauty and a sense of calm. Lose yourself in the serenity of this little island.

Second Life Destinations - Le Village de Roqueblanche

Second Life Destinations

Take a stroll through Roqueblanche in Second Life, a quaint virtual village and paradise for lovers of French culture and history.

Professional landscaper and interior designer, Albane Claray, shares her story and inspiration for Roqueblanche:

“My name is Albane and I am a girl from the south of France. I was born 26 years ago and grew up in a small village, raised by my grandmother. A few years ago, when I discovered Second Life, I was immediately amazed by the talent of the creators who, day after day, bring this not-so-virtual universe to life.

I watched, I learned, and I, too, began to draw pixel landscapes. It has become more than a hobby, it has become a passion.

Each new empty lot is a blank canvas for me and I have so much fun painting and creating.

I am happy to share this passion with all those who give me the opportunity to create for them, and who trust me to give life to their dreams, their desires.

I will always be an apprentice, a student as this universe offers possibilities to our creativity. We have no limits, no boundaries.

My story and my origins helped me build Roqueblanche, this little piece of my country. I find there the colors and smells of my childhood, the paths traveled so many times, the light of this end of the summer day, when the stones scorched by the sun are covered with shadows, when the old people of the village go out and sit in the square, in the shade of the old trees.

I wanted to share these memories, to offer people around the world a trip to Provence, the land of sun and perfumes. Roqueblanche is my cradle, my heart, and my sharing with the inhabitants of Second Life.”

Explore Roqueblanche today, and should you feel inclined, make it your next home.

Second Life Destinations - Le Jardin des Tuileries

Second Life Destinations

Take a stroll through Le Jardin Des Tuileries, a virtual garden inspired by the Tuileries Garden located between the Louvre and the Place de la Concorde in Paris. While there, you may want to grab a selfie with the Eiffel Tower for our Famous Landmarks Challenge.

Owner of the Made in Paris region, Morganeparis Parx, is influenced by Paris architecture when creating his place and would love it if Residents found it beautiful enough to make them want to take pictures there.

A Resident since 2008, Morgane shares what Second Life means to him:
“What does Second Life mean to me? A lot! I was born in SL in June, 2008 so I've been on Second Life for 14 years now. If it were boring here, believe me, I wouldn't have stayed.

When I discovered SL, I was playing  “The Sims” game all day, and I didn’t go outside my home a lot. My therapist told me that he heard about Second Life. He didn’t test it, but told me that maybe I could build a house like in The Sims, and create characters, but I’ll be able to have interactions with other people.

I decided to test Second Life and after learning about moving my avatar and camera, and watching Torley Linden’s videos, I quickly found an area where I was allowed to build. After a while, people in the sandboxes started to talk to me.

Month after month, I  improved my skills in Photoshop, started to learn Blender, I improved my English, and now I have relationships with people again.

Second Life helped me in so many ways. Being immersed in the world keeps me healthy and allows me to have social interaction with a lot less stress than IRL.

SL changed me a lot, for the better, it helped me to interact with people again, and allowed me to regain my self-confidence, and to develop relationships.

Second Life is what you want it to be: SL will be just a game, if you want it this way. But if you want SL to be a real second life, it will be that too.”

While exploring the region, you may want to grab a bear and take an image similar to those in the "Bears Around The World" contest, which encourages Residents to travel more. Creator Gabryel Lamplight, who held this contest this past summer, shares more about it, “This is a collection of cute bears combined with a photo contest. The bear is for many a symbol of childhood, a period during which everything seems possible. On SL, it seems to me that we come to find a part of this magic or carelessness. That's why through this contest we invite people to travel on SL and bring back beautiful photos with their favorite bears. Although the  contest is now closed, an exhibition will be organized at the Puerto Banana destination during the fall of 2022. The bear collection will still be available after the contest in the B.GAB store.”

Make memorable moments with teddy bear selfies in a virtual Parisian garden!

Second Life Destinations - Le Chateau

Second Life Destinations

This holiday season, take a trip back to the 80s at Le Chateau, a retro community in Second Life!

Creator Victoire Sire shares the inspiration behind Le Chateau:

“In 2021 a friend suggested that we design a typical American motel.

But as I'm French, we don't have motels in France or they are super rare. After some investigation I thought it was a great idea and that's how the adventure started.

We had to find inspiration for the colors, the design and especially a global theme to create this idyllic resort. So we went for the goofy aesthetics of the 80s and 90s, inspired by Miami, GTA Vice City, Scarface, Synthwave, Vaporwave, South America, French Guiana and two French TV series: OVNI(s) (a kind of French Stranger Things taking place in the 70s) and 3615 Monique (the debut of the phone sex on an early internet made in France known as Minitel).

Why French Guiana you gonna ask? Well, I simply wanted to make a French-inspired destination without actually being in Europe.

Imagine being in the late 80s where technological and social evolution happened.

The Plaza was also heavily inspired by yuppie culture, movies such as The Wolf of Wall Street and skyscrapers like the Tour Pleyel in Paris and the original World Trade Center design. But also the "Message a caractère informatif" - a French comedy TV show based on old corporate films from the 1980s with modern funny dubbings.

Here we are in 2022, bringing the 80's back to the community! Le Chateau is a virtual tale of luck, grit, know-how and the magic that arises when an assortment of eccentric characters comes together to live in this 80's island paradise. It's not just a shady motel by the roadside anymore, it's a whole lifestyle.

We also offer rentals in the estate. long-term motel rooms inside skyboxes, short-term motel "romantic" suites for daily usage, "lodge" suites with private gardens, premium villas at Le Chateau Vice Island, and so much more. We have a full waiting list available in the small Le Chateau Vice Island gazebo building. The office tower is still under construction but so far we don't offer any rentals in it.”

When asked what Second Life means to them, Victoire responded:

“I am 25 now. I've been in SL for a very long time (my first account is from 2009), at the time I was using SL on PG sims for teens, I did a lot of roleplay.

Those are really my best memories. Since then I have found my passions: Decoration, modding, landscaping, designing sims , photography, making SL videos for myself or for my clients and role-playing.

Second Life is for me THE most amazing metaverse experience you can currently have. As an autistic person, social life in real life is difficult but in Second Life I can be who I truly am and it is so much easier to communicate.”

Grab a cocktail, slip into an iconic retro swimsuit, and dive into a neon-filled 80s vacation!

Second Life Destinations - Jet No Mori

Second Life Destinations

Hang out at Jet No Mori, a gothic-themed garden, complete with monsters and a vampire princess at the top of a tower!

Created by Miss Jetcat Despres for a gothic-themed photo session with friends, Jet No Mori was made public for all to enjoy.

Jetcat hails from Japan and joined Second Life when she saw coverage of SL on Japanese TV in 2007. She says, “Back then, they presented it as a game where you could fly and swim, and they called it the Metaverse.”

Jetcat did step away from the OG Metaverse for almost 10 years as she got busy in the physical world, but she says she just could not forget about Second Life and became more active again about two years ago.

Jetcat now runs a blog and has a little plot in-world which she calls her garden. In fact, she herself identifies as a gardener, changing up the looks of her public land to go with the seasons.

Jetcat shares how she feels about Second Life and what her future plans are in this virtual world:
“Second Life is a place where anything is possible and anything can be created. This world is full of beautiful things, all created by people with their own ideas. There are many ways to enjoy this world, to explore it, to play in it, to be what you want to be. I'm going to keep enjoying it! It is after all a game where you can fly and swim! And it's still very very meta today.
It's like the times are repeating themselves, aren’t they?”

Second Life Destinations - Hashima Island

Second Life Destinations

Inspired by Hashima Island in Japan, discover the strange world of Hashima in Second Life, once a coal mine community, prison, and film set.

Creator Titus Palmira shares the background behind Hashima Island.

What does Second Life mean to you?
I have been in SL for 13 years and have done many things, each adding to the overall experience, but it really boils down to this: SL is a place where I can do what I want, be what I want, how I want, and all done within a shared experience with interesting people from all over the (real) world.

What is the background of Hashima Island? Is there a story in your head that you wanted expressed in this form?
I have always been interested in ghost towns. I feel they have a poignancy about them, the life that resided there once removed leaves a trace that soaks into the fabric of the abandoned buildings. There are government facilities here in the UK that have taken over entire villages, mining ghost towns in Australia, empty towns in Spain due to the greed of property developers, or ex-Soviet era towns in Eastern Europe. I found the Latvian town of Skrunda. It was used by the USSR army as a radar facility and also hosted the soldiers' families. The melancholy of it all struck me as being very profound. That gave me the idea of replicating this somehow in Second Life and the sim "Skrunda 2" was created, this was repeated the year with "Skrunda 3". We took the ideas and concepts behind Skrunda and moved the whole thing to Japan. Hashima island is almost the perfect real-life destination to be converted into a Second Life / Skrunda sim. It's small, has a defined identity, and has been abandoned, so a great ghost town. It has a rich history, it was a coal mine, a camp for POWs, and was a set for one of the scenes in the James Bond movie Skyfall which I thought people would find interesting.

How would you explain SL or what you do to a “skeptic” among friends and family?
That's a tough question, how do you describe something with almost endless possibilities? It's not a video game, so it has no beginning, middle, or end, but it sort of looks like one. I would say it's a virtual world, which in part you create yourself, a world where you get out, what you put in. If you don't socialize and make an effort to be involved, you will spend it alone and you will probably leave SL soon after, there is only so much shopping one can do before it gets tiring.

Do you think avatar expression is a vital part of SL or are the experiences and places more important?
I think the two things go hand in hand. As in real-life our "look" is the outer manifestation of who we want to be seen as and the message(s) we want to give out, but there is no point in having an amazing looking avatar, if there is no one to show it off to or great places for it to be seen in. Interesting sims of any kind, shopping experiences, clubs, photographic sims, role-play worlds, adventures, etc.. require effort and money to create. Not all sims are created to create a return on investment. I think what we try to do, is to offer something to the communal "pot" for everyone in SL to enjoy with no expectation of anything back. This is my way of paying it forward.

How would you recommend folks who are new to SL and feel they have no building skills become creative residents that contribute to the wonderful mosaic that is SL?
Youtube is your friend, failing that, have some real friends who are experts in this area. My good friend Sofie Janic (an accomplished SL builder of multiple sims) introduced me to Megan Prumier, another amazing builder. Like most things in life, it's best to just "give it a go", it might seem a bit fiddly at first, but you will be surprised at the things you can create quite quickly. There are so many great stores that sell such great components for sims, buildings, vehicles, plants and trees, assorted bits, and pieces, etc. Start off with a small Homestead, rez a shack, create a garden or a beach, add some waves and a deck chair, and you are there!

Second Life Destinations - Hamster Festival 2022

Second Life Destinations

Hamster avatars take center stage at Hamster Bar, home of a fun summer Hamster Festival every August.

If you’re looking for some wacky fun, you'd be hard-pressed to find a virtual world that offers more of that than Second Life!

Azuran, owner of the Hamster Bar and creator of the incredibly adorable Hamster Festival, also runs a Hamster blog all about the wheel turning activities taking place at the bar. The blog may be in Japanese and most avatars may be of the furry kind, but human avatars are more than welcome and many of the participants also speak English.

This two week festival runs until August 20th and includes a live DJ event and a shopping mall where you can pick up all your hamster accessories. Follow Hamster Fest on Twitter for updates.

One of the Hamsters featured in the video is Sanny Yoshikawa, who can usually be found in a squirrel or cat avatar but also enjoys being a hamster. The Hamster Festival is one of Sanny’s favorite events in Second Life.

Sanny has been a Second Life Resident for many years and tells us, “I am Japanese and have lived in Australia for 20 years. I joined SL when I saw the news about Japanese towns being created in SL. Now I live in a Sakura Linden Home.

My main project in SL is translating and making a summary of Wagner James AU's New World Notes monthly. I believe that it helps Japanese users to get information about SL and other virtual worlds. We can use DeepL to read foreign blogs nowadays, but I think the real problem for someone who doesn't use English is "how to reach information". If you don't know English you can't use google search, then you can't reach articles that you should read.”

Don't have a Hamster avatar and want to pick one up? Find them at Sue's Mall, home of the Beetlebones store in Second Life by Suetabulous Yootz.

Take a moment to connect with an adorable new community and teleport over to Hamster Festival today!

Second Life Destinations - Grey Magic

Second Life Destinations

Spend time with friends in Second Life and enjoy winter activities at Grey Magic this holiday season.

Grey Magic is a photogenic destination in Second Life that changes with the seasons. It is owned and run by Kimma Rayna and Dan Grey, who also offer rentals for those that want to make it a home.

Dan shares how he feels about Second Life and his purpose for creating Grey Magic:
“My first avatar is from 2006. I can hear you wonder, 16 years SL you must have seen it all? Yes! I have seen it all and yet Second Life is still a great place to be.

Over the years I made many (RL) friends from all over the world; Ireland, USA, UK, Italy, Jordan, Germany. These friends I call my family for real. The realness in this Second Life world is what makes me want to stay in SL.

And having your own sim of course too. My passion for Grey Magic lies in creating the feeling of home. I love when people can relate to this home feeling and to create the perfect one for tenants is the cherry on the pie.

Grey Magic is for everyone to enjoy. There are always public houses for people to enter and parks to hangout. Kimma and I are not interested in traffic, we are interested in people that want to explore and feel welcome.”

Kimma feels that Second Life’s name suits it well:
“One of many passions Dan and I share is our love of creative spaces.  Dan is hands down, the genius behind Grey Magic.  As I’ve joked before, he is the Picasso and I happily clean his brushes!

Having friends from all over the world is a gift you can only have in a place like Second Life.  How could you not be drawn to it and return over and over again? I would be lost without the connections I’ve made through the years here.

Second Life is actually a great name with real meaning. For so many of us, it could easily be called Blended Life as it bleeds into and blends with our real or first lives. How lucky we are to have such a magical place to share with others!”

Experience the magic of the season at Grey Magic.

Second Life Destinations - Forget ME Not

Second Life Destinations

Discover Adelia's inspiring journey - a dedicated Second Life Resident from Sweden. Battling Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E) since 2010, her condition has progressively confined her indoors. Yet, her spirit remains unshaken as she spearheads the "Forget ME Not" project in Second Life since May 2023.

What is the purpose of the “Forget ME Not” project here in SL?

Forget ME not wants to raise awareness about the serious, debilitating, chronic illness Myalgic Encephalomyelitis and to fundraise for the much needed M.E research in support of Open Medicine Foundation.

It is a disease that has existed for decades but is still poorly understood and neglected.

Can you describe what M.E is in a bit more detail?

M.E is a complex multi-system disease with many symptoms that may change over time and differ from patient to patient. The most common symptoms of M.E are post-exertional malaise (worsening of symptoms upon even minimal exertion – this is the hallmark symptom that you won’t find in most other diseases), cognitive impairment (such as brain fog, short-term memory loss etc) and severe body pain.

Due to a symptom set that overlaps with several other diseases, clinical assessment and symptoms and the exclusion of other diseases are necessary for accurate diagnosis. The cause of M.E is unknown, but a combination of genetic and environmental factors appear to be relevant. The majority gets sick after a viral infection and they simply never recover.
Over 20 million people around the world are affected. Nobody is immune. Unfortunately, it also affects children.

What are you doing to bring awareness to the issue with your SL based project?

So far we have had several events with live musicians and DJs throughout and raised some money for research. I also arranged a patient exhibit, bringing real-life patient stories into SL and we participated in SL20B in July with an enhanced version.

The point of the exhibit is to let people who know nothing or very little about M.E get an insight according to those affected. Most of these people are unable to work and live a normal life because their condition is so severe. The city scene symbolizes the many people who are forced to live an isolated life in their homes all around the world, and can't participate in the active life outside anymore, due to M.E.

We also scheduled a shopping event to mark the “Severe M.E Day”, the forget ME not Fair, that will be running from August 8 until August 29.

My future plans are to keep having these events in May and August. We hope to serve as a safe and supportive space where those affected, their loved ones, their carers - can talk about M.E, or just hang out without the judgment we so often have to face from society in general.

What does Second Life mean to you?

Second Life is in no way a miracle pill for me, but I have to say it has been a life saver many times because it helps me cope with the isolation and limitations this illness so often brings.

I am still limited in SL. I have to choose my activities wisely. I can’t be socially interactive for very long without draining all of my mental energy.

But the fact that I can visit a beach and go surfing, or go dancing, or have a conversation with a person who is half-way across the globe, or be creative – it's all of these little moments that keep me going and most of these things are impossible for me in real life.

You could say SL is like a short term painkiller that gets me through another day. It has just opened up a whole new world for me and in these moments I feel free.

I have a tiny Marketplace shop and enjoy creating tattoos. I plan on including shapes at some point since I enjoy styling avatars. I also have many pets! Let’s just say I do a little bit of everything. Why limit myself more than I already am, in a world where I can be anyone and do almost anything?

In your estimation so far as a relative newbie: Is SL for everyone?

I would like to say yes, but no, I have to say that SL is for “most” people. There are many who are too sick and disabled to go online or even look at a screen, like some of the most severely affected by M.E. But I’d say that as long as you have the ability, the time and the willingness/patience to learn (SL does have a slight learning curve) then absolutely it can be for you.

Second Life Destinations - Elephant Island

Second Life Destinations

Embark on a spiritual journey and visit Elephant Island, a wildlife adventure park in Second Life!

Builder and owner of Elephant Island, Syx Toshi, shares his vision for this stress-relieving destination:

“I’ve been in SL a long time and seen the amazing amount of progress with the influx of mesh. It has opened a new world of more realistic builds.

In my more recent builds, I have tried to provide people with destinations that provide multiple options to enjoy the environment, whether it is hiking, climbing, scuba diving, kayaking, or just sitting and listening to nature.

I want people to really have a sense of exploring. You may have noticed that Elephant Island not only has elephants, but we also have a completely immersive environment down to flies and ants.

If you stand in one place long enough, you will see just about everything you would see in RL.

My partner Bryn Toshi and I have a few rules for these builds: first and foremost is that there is no music on the region unless it’s coming from an old radio in one of the shacks. Once you pass that shack you will only hear nature.

This is important to me because there is so much noise in SL.

Even at nature destinations they are streaming music. I think that takes away from the experience.

I have been building since day one in SL, but only after I met my partner did I want to build as a team. Bryn’s input is the finishing touch to every build. She has an excellent eye for design. We are a great team and have been for over 10 years.

We both love SL for its creative outlet and the opportunity to stay connected in a unique way.

We both love creating for people’s enjoyment that’s why you will never see a tip jar on any of our builds. Our hope is that our builds provide an escape for people from the stress of RL.

Not everyone has the budget in RL to visit the places we try to duplicate in our builds.”

Take some time to escape from the daily grind and enjoy the breathtaking colors of nature at Elephant Island.

Stacy Maracas is a female Desert Storm combat veteran, who is heading up a Second Life operation to help veterans around the world. She tells us more about EchoVet:

“Echo Group, a Real Life 5013C, Band of Brothers is dedicated to our veteran community. We currently have our main group in California on the Central Coast and chapters in Arizona, Tennessee, and the Metaverse.

We are working closely on initiatives that directly affect the veteran community, such as the Veteran Homeless Crisis as well as the 22 a day initiative.

On our sim, we have kiosks providing up-to-date Veteran’s Affairs system information for veterans and family members. We have live classes on Veteran Suicide Awareness Training, PTSD Awareness Training, group camaraderie sessions, and club events at our Club Echo.

Numerous garden areas and places to just be and relax, we even have a farm tucked in the corner. And of course our famous aquarium.

We are getting our sim ready to become a Gateway in Second Life. Our Veterans will be available via scheduling to aid new Residents, and it will help the veteran earn their red, white, and blue jersey.”

When asked what Second Life means to her, Stacy said, “Second Life literally is my other life.  I have been here for over 18 years. In my early years after leaving the military, Second Life was a place I could socialize at my own pace. Many people do not understand how simple things like large crowds, noise, and traffic, are serious triggers for some combat veterans. Second Life was a safe space, to start my baby steps to venturing back out into society.”

Second Life Destinations - Dwarka

Second Life Destinations

Immerse yourself in the magic and beauty of the underwater worlds at Dwarka, a Medieval Fantasy Aquatic Role-play destination.

Dwarka is an elaborate universe that allows a fully immersive role-play experience underwater. Races that live on land and in the water coexist here, form alliances, do battle, and imagine intricate scenarios within the existing but constantly changing lore of Dwarka. Oh and yes: folks at Dwarka do go shopping, hang out in taverns and educate themselves at the Merbrary, where books are available under as well as above water.

Kei Kawanishi, who runs the place together with colleagues Drakos and Alice Roseroot, explains:

“Dwarka was created with about 75-80% of it underwater, and the rest on land. There are 3 underwater districts - The elven city, the Mer city and royal court, and the depths. To my knowledge, there has never been an RP sim that offers so many aquatic amenities in SL - EVER. lol ..”

Are you a “landlubber” like an elf, a tiefling, a gnome, or a dragon or do you prefer to embody as a siren, mermaid, aquatic kobold or possibly as kakresha (a hybrid being, composed of the upper body of a human and the lower body of a centipede.) Dwarka has a fully integrated D&D style role-play functionality via a HUD.

As their manifesto states: “Whether you're already an aquatic fanatic and want to take your RP skills to a new level or you're an already experienced RPing nerd who is looking for something new. The destination will bring something for everyone.”

After extensive visits to Dwarka, our team has to agree.

Kei Kawanishi adds a personal note about the significance of creating Dwarka in SL: “Second Life means so much to me: freedom, creativity, business, projects, family, and friends. SL is NOT a game. It's a metaverse (no, not the Facebook kind). We've been calling SL a metaverse for almost 2 decades because that's what it is!”

And if you are stopping by, don’t miss the many Mom and Pop shops scattered around the sea and land. Hot tip? The “Sea Tangles Spa” where the offer is straight-forward as it is enticing: “Our committed and competent team is here to help keep your hair, nails, claws, scales, skin, and body healthy and beautiful.”

Now don’t delay and submit an application via their Discord or inworld and start roleplaying. Rumor has it that each approved new member gets a spa ticket on the house!

Second Life Destinations - Club Hexnetic

Second Life Destinations

Step into the distant future and find yourself amidst a dystopian fueled world at Club Hexnetic, an LGBTQ owned and operated music venue in Second Life.

Hexnetic is a combination of futuristic hi-tech and underground hideaway - a truly unique club for music lovers. Owner Ulysses Hexem, also known as DJ Cursed, has gathered creative contributions from all over Second Life to imagine a uniquely themed music venue making the atmosphere at Hexnetic truly electric. With experience in building roleplay destinations and other venues, Ulysses says, “Hexnetic is all about the music. Many of our DJ's are very talented, have been in Second Life for a very long time, and some work as DJs in Real Life as well. But we all share the same vision: we want to keep music alive in Second Life, through sharing many different genres of music from around the world.”

When asked what Second Life means to him, Ulysses shares, “Second Life to me is the people. The community. I have met so many amazing people here. I have made many friends and consider those family. We are very tight knit. We are there for each other, online and offline. Connections are very important to people. Even more so during trying times. Being of the LGBTQ community, I bring that with me. Open arms, everyone is welcome and accepted. There are no barriers. I have found here what often I have failed to find in Real Life. That may sound like a bad thing, but the truth is that it is often hard to find those with shared interests. Whereas Second Life gives people the opportunity to meet and converse with a vast array of people from all walks of life. It truly opens you up to new knowledge and experiences.”

If you're looking for a place to cut loose without anyone judging you for being yourself, this is definitely the destination for you!
