So what changed in the Terms of Service?

Recommended Posts

Some random thoughts I've been having. First, in looking at LL Region Rating system it states:

"Second Life's Moderate designation accommodates most of the non-adult activities common in Second Life. Dance clubs, bars, stores and malls, galleries, music venues, beaches, parks, and other spaces for socializing, creating, and learning all support a Moderate designation so long as they do not host publicly promoted adult activities or content and do not use adult search tags. Groups, events and classifieds that relate to this broad range of activities and themes generally should also be designated as Moderate.

Residents in these spaces should therefore expect to see a variety of themes and content. Stores that sell a range of content that includes some "sexy" clothing or objects can generally reside in Moderate rather than Adult regions. Dance clubs that feature "burlesque" acts can also generally reside in Moderate regions as long as they don't promote sexual conduct, for instance through pose balls (whether in "backrooms" or more visible spaces). However if any of these businesses uses adult-oriented search tags, the region may be categorized as Adult and blocked from appearing in non-Adult search."

It has been well established by LL that adult activities need to be behind closed doors and not readily available for view say from a public LL roadway in a moderate region. It shows this under Linden Lab Official:Adult Content FAQ and for moderate regions it states:

Is simple nudity without sex Adult?

Depending on context, nudity may not require an Adult rating. For example all of the following could be rated Moderate:

  • A nude beach without sexual activity.
  • Skin vendors showing a nude skin to display the product.
  • Nude art that is not sexual.
  • Strip clubs that do not use adult words in search or host sex furniture.

Depending on the context, exposed genitalia may not be considered Adult. For example:

  • Hanging out at a nude beach would be fine.
  • Walking around pants-less on the mainland could be inappropriate.

Non-sexualized depictions of nudity are Moderate NOT Adult.

Understanding these should therefore mean it is reasonable and can be expected to be found in Moderate Regions.

Another day of playing Stardew and peeking over here planned for me! You can get through it!

I'm doing another BG3 run whist keeping a casual eye over here.  ResistUrge.  I like that game cause I can stop smack dab in the middle of combat to pet the dog should the occasion present itself. :P

I realized something today. LL will need to provide us with linden home options on differently rated sims.

You can easily have neighbors with child avas, all while you re-enact your worst 50 Shades impression in your RedRoom.

I would be head over heels to have a Linden home on Adult land, so I don't have to sanitize myself and scramble to make sure everything is covered up. I hate the idea of being in my home, relaxing in my front yard,  and having a kid avatar or family with kids living right next to me, walking by or being anywhere near my home. As much as kid avatars should not (and cannot per the TOS) want to be around adults being naked or participating in adult activities, as an adult, I never want to be around child avatars; no offence to them, but they are insta-blocked for my comfort.

I'm sure that's true, and that Governance is smart enough to be able to sort out accidental from deliberate incidents, and to apply nothing worse than a warning if the case is ambiguous.  I can imagine plenty of hypothetical situations when a nude adult and a child avatar might accidentally be in the same place.

For example, I like to explore underwater places as a mermaid. I've done it all over the grid, especially in Bellisseria, where there's some cool stuff to find. My mermaid is topless. (I don't think scratchy seashells are a realistic expectation. They look dorky.)  If I swim into a grotto where some child av is playing innocently, then, we'll both say "OOops!" and feel a bit awkward. Theoretically, anyone could submit an AR on both of us at that point.  If they did -- even if the AR was filed by one of us -- I am very confident that Governance would through the case in the dumpster.

Frankly, though, I think what would actually happen is that one of us would simply swim away and forget it.  I am confident that most people are not trying to get each other in trouble and that most people are rational enough to see that in a situation like that, there's no sexual intent.  Someone will always avoid the appearance of impropriety by just leaving.

That's really what I"m arguing. But here in general there's no nuance, no affordabilty, no reasonable affordance.. So I'm not the one who needs to be put to trial over this.

I would think interactions and offenses would be easily identified, but the lawyering begins (You not included), so I'm outtie and let those worried about such things do so if they want. I don't even come close to these activities in SL, so it doesn't concern me.

But if you have your settings set right that child avatar won't even see you in your front lawn.

Why? I'm allowed to do that. Unless the avi is ON my property then it won't affect them at all. I have my settings so you can see or hear other avi's. Even if they cam in they won't see anything going on.

There's a lot of fear of people trolling one another in attempts to AR people. Linden homes could be a spot where that happens. You can't put up ban lines with linden homes either. You would have to individually ban people.

Someone else said you can? Which one is it. Can you or can't you?

Moderate allows everything Adult allows with a few exceptions.

Adult activities much be behind closed doors on M land, but nudity isn't inherently adult and that is unchanged by the ToS update.

Their were never any genitals to begin with, no mainstream avatar coms with genitals nor have I ever seen them for sale in any of the kid stores I've been in nor are such attachments encouraged, in fact quite the opposite, the kid avatars I've met would be just as creeped out as I would. Someone who have to purposefully seek them out and I would be creeped out by someone who did that.

There were for sure stores that sold genitals for kids, ánd the main brands of past years were also suitable for that purpose by their shrinking features. Please don't try to tell if it was not encouraged, the guys knew where to find it on their first rezday. They were even available on the teen grid, legal or not.
It's clear you didnt meet the widely spread teen and twink places in a bit longer time ago. The current owners of SL would get pale if they would see what happened on some places. And how long it took... years, before there was a adequate ruling to prevent it.
The SL communities as we know now were totally different as the current ones. Wild West would be a good term to describe a lot what happened.
I'm here for 18 yrs, seen a lot, know a lot, forgot even more, but don't try to tell fairy tales. There's nothing changed; guys log in and most want to find that thing fast.
Going to kids communities... nearly néver met one who entered SL on his first day, countable on one hand.

So basically, G land is the only place where kid avis can reasonably expect to be safe from nudity.

The whole thing is pretty clear cut if you are explicitly a child, like "X year old" in your profile where X < 18.

The only part of this that's up for debate are AVs that do not want to be child AVs but have traits that could be considered child-like or under-age by other users who would then report them. Even if you're not doing anything to break the ToS no one wants to be reported, specially when there's so much time, effort, and real life money that goes into an AV. Those are the people who are concerned, and rightfully so. I used to have an adult AV that went through that and I just ended up stop caring about how my AV looks and just sit on my build platform now lol. I understand how some people feel about this and why they are concerned but it really doesn't affect me anymore.

You could always go to opensim where this stuff is much easier to get away with.

Been there since 2009 with my own grid that is up to just under 100 sims. I just come here for some lifestyle specific clubbing. Also I check in to the Forums here for my dopamine rush when it needs a boost!

At least on my own grid the Owner (me) doesn't change the rules annually and no AR's!

In my view, the recent changes to Second Life's Terms of Service may be signaling a larger shift towards prioritizing adult content and potentially phasing out the child community altogether. While some may interpret these changes as a means to restore the platform's original purpose, it's essential to recognize the broader implications.

Second Life's evolution from an educational tool and diverse community space to a platform dominated by adult content reflects a divergence from its initial vision. By implementing stricter guidelines on child avatars, Linden Lab may be laying the groundwork for a future where adult-oriented content takes center stage. Of which I hope the LAB takes as much attention as they have with this... whatever it is. Second Life ain't Pornoville, but you sure creating it as such.

However, this transition raises concerns for individuals who engage with child avatars for reasons beyond illicit activities. For many, it's about seeking connections and experiences that provide solace and support. The potential removal of the child community could alienate these users and further marginalize already vulnerable groups.

As Second Life navigates these changes, it's crucial for Linden Lab to consider the implications for all users and ensure that any shifts align with principles of inclusivity, fairness, outreach support and respect for diverse communities. There are more issues down this rabbit hole, some I do not think LL have even worked out. This could really backfire for them as this move has in essentiality broken a multitude of SL's own original platform vision. Its not just the kids that are the problem, in fact they are the smallest on an iceberg of contradictions.

What does that have to do with anything? Nudity is allowed in public on M rated land. End of story.

TBH i thought that was all for the Adult Desgination. And Nudity and stuff, was only allowed if it was done behind closed doors.

Moderate regions would seem safe-ish imo, as long as people running child avis stay aware of their surroundings, don't afk, and are quick to change/leave.

LL could have gone the lazy/no effort route and limited child avis to General, but that seems unfair too. The way the new TOS is written makes it a manageable balance.

No you don't. Use a security orb that just allows people in your group to access your land. No need to ban people individually.

Ever was, Brodiac. Nothing changed there. What has changed is that Child Avi Pilots are demanded to show respect for the inhabitants of M rated sims who like sunbathings without kids now.

And I do, but I would be much more comfortable and happy if my Linden home was on A land, so I could be around others and be able to feel like I live in a neighborhood and not have to stop people from seeing me on my front lawn. Having to hide and block things so people can't see or hear you, to me, defeats the purpose of living in a neighborhood setting. I have a Linden home that is currently setting empty because it doesn't really serve a purpose since I live on an adult island.

See Indy Melody's post, which includes an excerpt from the ToS (or CS, maybe) above.
