Looking back fills me with nostalgia and horror. I made my own homes back then - ok they were mostly ugly concrete boxes but they were low prim. Being pre-mesh meant people of all abilities could and did learn to create their own stuff without the need for any 3rd party apps. It was simpler to help out a new resident then too as you did not have to wade through mesh bodies, heads, appliers or BoM and lord knows what else! Simpler times but (and I do have photographic evidence) we looked awful!

I keep a few pictures and outfits to remember the good old days and yes we looked awful in retrospect but at the time thought we looked hawt! Just as we do today but will likely cringe in a few years.

My friends list will never become a nostalgia museum.

Do you clear our the calling cards from your inventory too? There is another nostalgia museum. Sometimes I check out the landmarks of places I used to go too. Most often I find "region unavailable" if it was a private region and it has been removed from the grid, or there will be a vast grassy empty space if it was mainland. I liked to visit Tyrafoon (mainland) often, because in 2008 it was a large shopping mall mainly with a playground and it had a nice atmosphere, then it became another barren wasteland, and the last time I looked someone had bought at least part of it and had developed it into something else. Strange to me how a place can be just existing on a server somewhere, yet looks and feels real and changes how I feel about it.

A bit like the stories I would read by Enid Blyton about The Enchanged Wood, when the land at the top of the Faraway Tree would change.

Maybe Second Life is a bit like that to me.

When I was new, I thought our avatars stood in place & hibernated while we were offline.

Same here, it's the entire reason i created my first alt. i used to hide in the stairwell of a small mall tacked on to freebie dungeon whenever I logged off. curious what happened to me when I wasn't online i made an alt sent it to look for me in the stairwell i wasn't there, so i stopped hiding after that

Starzz Witherspoon, my first best friend in those early wonder times <Sigh....> I miss her. We danced like it was 2006, because it was.

I also miss the rampantly unregulated SL casino trade. Much of my building, LSL and texture learning were focused on creating gambling machines for the endless number of casinos across the grid. Probably good overall that LL eventually complied with the then new US online gambling regs, but it was a hot market while it lasted!

missing my sl son Dillon, shared nearly a decade of SL. Totally the opposite of me in behaviour, interest and orientation.
Can't find him in search anymore, just by his callingcard. Left or banned .. wouldn't even be surprised its that last :) .
Or started again?.. well i'll never know.

Hope he makes it well in France.

i miss the prim building in the public sandboxes. Met and talked to whole bunches of people back in those days because we had a shared SL experience/thing in common to talk about

this said, I have noticed that since Firestorm made Local Mesh that the public sandboxes are getting more people in them. Which is a good thing I think, even when only they can see what they are making

Meeting my first and only SL love (finding nice private rooms for a bit of hanky panky), the fun we had finding good camping spots, finding loaded sploders. Finding good freebie stores. Going shopping to buy certain outfits for club contests.

Dancing and earning tips.

Meeting new people and becoming life-long-SL friends.

These days it is just contet creation, shopping and a bit of "gambling" Occasionally hanging out with friends when they are online. But most of the time I am solitary.

Me too 😍 I liked the casinos and even had a brief job in one as a greeter behind the bar, on a 'making cocktails' poseball 🍸 My favourite was a Zyngo rip-off called Mad Monkey Money, I was always lucky at that 💰 They were fun places to people-watch too!

I wish the newer bodies would add the clothing layer that Maitreya had. It was so useful to go on websites, get a t-shirt for example and make it a clothing applier to wear under a leather jacket - just using the front. I know you can do BOM but they fit so tight they look stupid. The clothing layer was amazing and you could add materials. Please adopt it Legacy or Reborn!

That's probably very wise, and it certainly would reduce clutter. I have a hard time doing this for people I have been close to, though. I have a hard time believing in an afterlife, but I do have a strong feeling that we are "alive" as long as someone remembers us.  My parents and grandparents are alive in my mind, and I hope I remain alive to some people well after I am gone.  It's not nostalgia in the wistful sense; it's hard to explain.  Somehow, removing a person from my friends list just because she has passed on in RL shuts a door that I don't want closed.

i feel like in the case of being close to someone makes it different. i cleared out ppl i friended when i was more lax with accepting requests where it never went anywhere past a one to a few interactions. i have one true sl friend that if she went offline for good, i'd never remove her. my friends list only contains the users i'm close too at this point.

I really loved my first SL husband. I miss him. He was an amazing human being. Looking back I wish we had never tried to connect outside SL. It was his idea and I reluctantly went along with it. We lived on opposite coasts of the U.S. very far away from one another. Things fell apart dramatically (due to stress, logistics, and Lies) before we even had a chance to meet. But I remember how much I adored him when I only knew his essence and the sound of his voice in my headphones. Ironically, we met at an SL Halloween party when I was a newbie. I fell in love with him when we were both wearing masked costumes. When we were both cats LOL. 😿. From that experience, I learned SL is a very special bubble that only exists inside the online world. And, like all beautiful things, it is not meant to breathe air. 💗

Reborn does.have an option in the HUD to "loosen" the BOM layers.  For instance, on the bra/undershirt layer, you tick the breast box on the HUD which lifts the layer out of the cleavage.  Much more realistic.  There's one for belly, panties and butt, IIRC.  The butt one is great so it doesn't look as if the clothing is painted into the butt crack.

I used to delete friends but when one guy came back after a 7 year absence I stopped doing it.

I know that doesn't often happen but, it can so mine stays as it is.

I yearn for the days back in 2013 when I was a fresh SL newbie who didn't know jack squat and my avatar looked like absolute crap because I was wearing obnoxious freebie earrings and heels. It just seemed a lot more alive and atmospheric for some reason. Maybe I am just more cynical now.

It did seem so much more exciting back in the day. Yep, our Avs did look like crap but we liked them and anything was a step up from Ruth 🙂

"It just seemed a lot more alive and atmospheric for some reason." Absolutely, I aint felt like that in a long time in-world

I know that the novelty of things wears off, but I just don't know why people don't seem the same.
