Granted, five at the same time teaching them to join groups and how MMs work. And some basic stuff about alphas. Never even once did anyone ask "how do I look like those in Flickr". Hope they all get their relatively fast car (it is leaderboard fast if you know how to) which they probably will not know how to handle at all, but gave them a few LMs, like 2RAW, where they can practice safely, and get some guidance without any mockery.

I felt like sort of an MC themed Yoda... :)

Not much, but one tries.

That was nice of you.  I like helping noobs.

I think of myself as a noob even after all my years inworld.  There are so many things I haven't figured out, yet.  Then a real noob asks a question and I feel like an SL genius 😄

I haven't spent time lately in any new resident areas.  I should visit them more often.

So you need to claim attention for doing something that most experienced users do several times a day without feeling the need to seek attention for doing so? 🤔

Nothing wrong with it. It could very well motivate some others to do likewise.

It's a long time since I heard about anyone doing this, and a longer time since I actually did it.

I remember everyone who helped me out during my early days, and probably they will remember you too.

Well done!

I usually like to lead newbies into volcanoes so as to please the gods and ensure a  good harvest but, I suppose helping them is good as well 🙃 Just be sure to feed one to a volcano every once in a while, mah crops need the water.

Consider the source.  All I'm gonna say.

I used to help out daily years ago.  It always made me smile to see someone excited about learning something new.  I've helped a few people inworld who asked questions in the forums recently.  It's not nearly as easy as it used to be.

Consider the source yep. Very good point. 2RAW took care of me almost after I landed, so kinda jaded. I kinda blame them for me being a speed freak of sorts :) I dunno. Might have been different if I all I knew was nude beaches (nothing wrong with that...) ;)

Sorry for starting a thread on this if it offended anyone. Perhaps you'll post your recent ones (recent is up to to you, olbies welcome as well). I normally don't offer unsolicted advice, but "hey, would you like some help with that vehicle" is often answered with "yes please". Is all :)

I don't see any problem with such positive stories.. We get so many of the other it seems, so it's breath of fresh air..😉

I only see one negative in this thread, and well, what Rowan said about "consider the source."

Heck, I won't even bring doom and gloom into it by saying that I've ended up regretting it every time I helped a noob. (Sad, but true.)

I'm with everyone else here: Yay, good deeds! My very favorite way to do good deeds is to do them anonymously, like when I pay for someone's Dunkin Donuts behind me in the drive thru. (I mean if I did such things, as I eschew all things junk food.) That's harder to do helping noobs, unless I guess you do it with an anonymous alt, or give money anonymously somehow (alt again?). Happy good karma day!

I respect a person that is up-front with their assertions, desires to be recognized for the good they do, the motivation it brings them and the general feeling of well-being.  I do not respect those that pretend that they do not personally, emotionally, benefit from the same.

"There is no limit to the good you can do if you are willing not to get the credit."

Having said that, I do want a prize for spending more than an hour recently, all told, explaining how tier contribution to a group works. This is a frequent experience and I try to streamline it but it's always hard.

It starts with questions like, "I heard I can deed my Linden home to you and get a discount" (not possible to deed or sell Linden homes and illegal to rent them out, of course -- plus I don't need your land to tier if it's Mainland) -- and then continues ringing all the chimes in this frustratingly complicated system, and ends with those sort of narrow-eyed suspicious queries such as "What's in it for you? Are you paying Linden Lab or pocketing the money?" That's one of those questions that only engenders more questions as you try to answer it honestly.

Well, nobody is going to get rich off Mainland rentals, it's a fool's errand and tier donation exists mainly to cover those oddments of steep tier levels, so that you can add a small amount of prim land to a group without tiering up and paying another huge level you don't need.

I remember nearly 18 years ago, when I first announced a tier donation program along with willingness to buy newbie "First Land," it was greeted with hatred and suspicion by oldbies who endlessly harassed me on the forums and inworld and would find tenants and tell them lies. *That's because there are always groups thinking they are superior in helping newbies and need to block others attempting to do this to keep their franchise.* The Lindens keep stepping on this rake as their old, haunted, unused volunteer buildings illustrate and their groups of 8,000 (!) with many not having logged on in years!

I was trying to use the group tools as intended, especially after their reforms moved the destructive "officer recall". I still think it would be great to start a commune, although I'm not a hippie or socialist. I just think there are these relatively good group tools (if you don't need to chat and you can wait for things to load) that enable people to pool their resources, save money, and have fun. Oh, well.

People, especially landlords, are always treated as predators gaining something from newbies, although most people don't seem to realize that typically, newbies have no cash; they don't want to buy Lindens as they fear the process, and they are about to bolt from SL, so you can only go uphill from there. So I realize that while the OP is self-congratulatory, it's also an object lesson and everyone should try to help newbies more. Go to the welcome areas and infohubs and ask someone seeming to be struggling.

Yes, I have cards explaining tier, yes the Lindens have a Knowledge page although it is incomplete (on especially this topic of donation to a group).

But since tier remains under your control at all times, it really isn't the horror imagined. Not like clicking on an Experience "blue screen of doom" demand of an untrustworthy party.

These things seem to come in cascades. So a person takes their tier in and out of the group along the way to trying to understand it. Seeing the "plus" of tier in the group, another person thinks, oh, I can take my tier out. Or I *should* take my tier out. So that means you have to keep buffers and hop around like a short-order cook. It's not uncommon for a Linden now to IM you within an hour or six hours of you shuffling tier and trying to fix groups and settle people struggling to put it in (never clicking "save" etc) - although in theory you have I think 24 hours. But the Lindens are on orders to work with lightning speed now. The dust hadn't settled from some abandoned land I did the other day when it immediately turned purple for an auction.  So I had to hasted to another sim to request the abandoned because that could be going up for auction, too. Again, Cat-in-the-Hat.

I've noticed, of late, how both positivity and helping others is viewed with suspicion by some. I don't get it. The motivation for such actions is even questioned. It seems some have not experienced the joy that helping others brings.

If something is worth doing, it's worth getting paid to do it.

Not quite sure what you mean. I can imagine various worthwhile activities where no payment is received. Joy is a nice payment, however.
