Wow! Part way down page 2 and not a single mention of bots. How times have changed! I feel so yesterday :(

Apart from my very first alt, for which I had to pay $10 (I think it was), half of my my alts were created as bots, and the other half for their profiles. My first alt was the one I used for testing animations. Some of the bots were store models, and some were mobile characters in and around my castle. I don't use any like that any more. These days some of them are used for security device testing, when I need a number of avatars logged in, and also as necessary group members, so that one particular person doesn't get to pay a large part of the 30L/week search fee.

The one thing I've never done with an alt is go out and socialise in the world. For that, it's always been me.

And how's that been working out for you, Mister 8 Warning Badges?

...pokes you affectionately and runs off gigglng

Replying in a slightly more serious tone: While bots are certainly a form of alt (a person does, after all, have to create an account for them, which is the definition of an alt), most people think of bots and alts as two different sorts of things, since one is computer controlled and the other is people-controlled.

Are you ever positive about anything regarding SL? Why are you here for ? Do you ever experience happiness? Just about all of your posts are about complaining about others in SL. Wow, just wow.

Hopefully one day you will experience true happiness and feel that you need to express that, to help birth some joy in the world.

My main account is this redheaded female, the artist who has a gallery in world and MP store, though she has different physical looks to slip into, though I don't consider these an alt, since they are all in this name. Most of my time is spent as Katherine as the redheaded female in my profile pic, though I can also look like a ball joint doll; a wolf, deer, or cheetah; and also a house cat.

I have a male alt that maybe gets out 2% of the time because I am male IRL. That's the only reason I have an alt account. And I like Deadwool and Cold Ash clothing that won't fit me when I'm female. :)

And dancing with yourself is fine! Lots of that happens at the dance places for various reasons.

For me I like to be able to play different characters, kind of like in an MMO. They each have their own inventories, their own groups and their own appearances. Often I let people know it's just me on an alt, for ex. in my roleplay sim I might switch to my teacher alt whilst I'm teaching some things to a class just to be more immersive. Sure you could do that with different outfits, but then your name does not match the character you are playing.

Alts are also useful for running multiple stores that have wildly different customer bases. For example on one of my alts I run a shop that sells mesh trees, and my main account sells adult clothing. Sure you could mix the two on one account but most people prefer to shop trees in a tree shop rather than a clothes shop.

This is a big reason for store alts and why we need to have multiple stores per avatar.

I have a couple of stores with wildly different content and audience.

I would love to have them all under one account, it would make creation and customer support so much simpler.

My alt is actually my first account. I made it, couldn't figure anything out, and then abandoned it. I came back wanting to roleplay and made this account, having somewhat forgotten about the other one. I originally used my alt for photos for my store (so I'd have an extra body to show off what I was making) and for working with AVSitter (so I could test out multiple poses at once). I later revived my alt and started to make a character for him, initially with the intent of adopting a child avatar and being a dad. That didn't work and I ended up making him a teenager at the last minute for a roleplay that didn't work out, but the character stuck. So now the bit is that he (my alt) did piecemeal work for my child character (this account)'s store and is friends with him. He's been involved in some cross roleplay, and my child character has been involved in some of his roleplays and friendships.

Outside of that, each are an opportunity to log in with a degree of discretion (though they both share some friends), such as if I'm working on something and want some privacy. Using my alt has also given me some distance from my main, as I've been having some personal problems that got tied up with my main, like stress from event planning and a dry spell in roleplaying that was getting me down. That distance gave me a chance to redo his appearance and look at how I was approaching roleplaying.

Oh. And I have a third account I made so I could offload group advertising for my store, but I haven't done anything with that account yet.

I sort of fell into alts: when my kids and their boyfriends and I first tried SL back in 2007-2008, I somehow became the Keeper of the Passwords.  One by one the kids lost interest but, over the years, whevever I got bored, I would log in as one of their avvies and upgrade it a bit.  It grew from there and now that Bellisseria is growing and growing, I use them to explore the new home themes as they are released.  😄

I've had this main account since 2007.  Once I started creating things to sell, it didn't take me long to realize that I would need an alt to test permissions.  There's nothing more frustrating than making a creation available for sale and double checking that all of its scripts and whatnot will transfer properly from one owner to the next but can only be copied or modified the way you want them to be.  My testing alt and I trade my work back and forth all the time, just to be sure that a change in ownership hasn't bunged up something.

My main account has become my recreational persona, a landowner and occasional explorer. She dances and chats with a small group of close friends who have known each other for ages, and she wanders in and out of the forums.  When I am spending time scripting or doing other creative work, I'm in world as one of two or three alts, so that I have as much uninterrupted time as possible.  We lead separate lives.

You First Life people can be so mean sometimes. You create us on a whim or just to be your unpaid workers (otherwise called slaves, BTW!).  Most of the time you ignore us and don't give us enough money for shopping, yet you take our money whenever you want. Some of us have feeling too. (Bots might not though. It's hard to get much of an in-depth conversation from them.) Most of us like to do the same things you do. We like exploring, dancing, shopping, and chatting with other people.

How about showing us alts a little love and letting us have some fun too.

Btw, we know stuff about you that you might not like having shared with other people.

This is my main. Over the years I've created alts just for the challenge of doing it for free (or mostly free). I created a male alt because I wanted to know what it would be like to traverse SL as a man (but I didn't buy a pixel peen or engage in sex/romantic relationships and I don't go on voice with him). It proved how hard it is to kit out a male avi on freebies.  One alt graduated to premium because I found a Belli house I desperately wanted while I was logged in on her.  She kind of serves as my main bank account, as I tend to forget she gets the stipend now, so her balance accumulates a lot faster.

The other female alts don't come out much except for great freebies (like at Christmas with Lelutka and advents).  I will log into them a few times a year and upgrade their looks with free/cheap things that are good quality.  One of them was solely created for a last name right before last names disappeared.  She has a really funny name.   There's always an option to eventually have one of the alts as my main, but I'm rather too attached to my main's inventory to do that.

I wish inventories were usable across accounts.
