Yes the Cornfield was real...I knew someone who was sent there for a week for being naughty 😃 Apparently a Linden would come in and hang around and talk to them each day. It was inactive for a while and then opened to all residents one Halloween with Torley doing a guided tour ☺️

Originally 8 Regions then went to 4 that was a timeout area for residents reported for violating community guidelines..Depending on the crime was length of time..until that time was up it was only place in SL you could log into.

vice versa unless you were in trouble you could not visit as well.

It was a griefer showdown but for along time it had a thriving safehub type community as they would get each other in trouble to get sent in.

This was back when the help island had a 24/7 linden onsite too.

They also brought it back a few times at birthdays but only one region, a lot less fun then region Cornfield 1 through 4

LOL! It's sort of funny that people would get themselves in trouble to be sent there because they missed their friends :x

Could people in the Cornfield still swap IMs with people outside?

For the FIC, see Prokofy Neva, although the idea I think predates his lists.

The German news report was a tabloidy story about under age goings-on of an illegal kind in SL. Of which there was unquestionably some. It created a mass panic and may have moved LL to change its rating system and close the teen grid.

Not sure about babies in boxes though.

The idea for the F.I.C. was - to the best of my own remembrance - purely spawned from that one's imagination.

The rating system change and closure of the Teen Grid had nothing to do with the tabloid report that sought out such play within Second Life - those changes came years later.

Yea, I remember them saying it wasn't because of the teen grid and then the teen grid closing not long after.

It wasn't about the teen grid, but it was about the teen grid.. hehehehe

The teen grid did shut down without much advance notice didn’t it? Many people were surprised by the closing IIRC.

It was so long ago that I can't remember exactly what was said, it'll probably come to me if I really sit and think about it.. But there was suspicion about the move being about the teen grid closing and being told that it wasn't going to or something like that, and then them doing it after.. not right after  but  but not real long after..

You'd probably find something on it in the first version of the forums in the forum archives..

It was all restricted..region one you could plead your case to a linden who might pop in... but if you were on the other regions you were there much longer until allowed in region one..many were never allowed to ever leave the cornfield even til this day due to being too naughty.

Way back in the day I was flying around the mainland while dressed as a Gothic vampire..I did not know Bloodlines had invaded the grid spamming all over..I stopped in a mega mall to shop but was unaware everyone was in a panic 'I was a vampire' they all mass AR'd me as suddenly while shopping I started to teleport (lindens were god teleporting me to them) I arrived on a porch in an Asian garden with a dozen lindens lounging around me..Philip Linden was there and asked me how I was doing, was I enjoying SL... if I was being naughty? while I just said no while somewhat confused..he said he had some friends for me to meet and teleported me to the cornfields! was there a month before talking my way out!.. 3 days after being in their the founder of bloodlines was jailed there too with us hanging around the campfire and i was able to piece together what the heck happened.

A year later I was in Korea just parking my Avi listening to everyone talk while being AFK..and again without warning finding myself with everyone else in Korea! locked into the cornfields under a mass arrest!.. well just happened that day this loud voicer from another hub stopped in (I suspect he got everyone busted) and he was so annoying he became somewhat a legend after years of just being the guy you could get to explode on voice.  well after a week everyone on the cornfields was tired of him screaming that the linden jailer even had enough.. so they got into verbal spat and the linden rezzed a boxing ring in the middle of the cornfields then gave him gloves to fight it out! ..it was crazy as everyone was sitting on the region border zoomed in as the linden kept boxing him around as the guy screamed in voice every time he got hit... as if he was really getting hit in real life 😅

You may well be right about the F.I.C., although wasn't there a related "Oldbie Conspiracy" that overlapped with, but was not the same as, that?

You're right, as well, that the closing of the teen grid and the new rating system were not immediate responses to the tabloid story -- there was certainly a time gap there, although I'd have to do some digging to remember the exact chronology -- but I'm pretty sure they factored in, along with the realization that an increased flow of new users meant that a more robust system was necessary. In a sense, maybe, the German news story was just one part, albeit an important and high profile part, of a larger perception about SL that the Lab wanted to address.

ETA: Apparently the teen grid merged with the main grid in January, 2011 -- so, well after the ruckus.

It merged in 2011, but was announced like mid summer 2010, I wanna say like July or august.. The new rating system was 2009..

spring 2009 it started the creation of zindra which didn't come online until like October 2009..

that was a crazy couple of years.. They bought up Xstreet and the market was born..

it was like, bam,bam,bambambam.. hehehehe

There was a museum of SL somewhere near Da Boom which had a mini copy of the Cornfield. I can't find it now. It also had a Telehub and many other artifacts from the early days. Large square building with an open courtyard in the middle. Anyone know where it is?

Is it this?  I found a link in the Destination Guide but when I got there, everything had changed, there was a forced landing point on the ground, and a flight up to the expected level revealed nothing in the air.

That looks a lot like what I remember. But, as you say, it's not there now. Did it move? It seems something someone would have kept.

Yikes. I have to say I'm glad I didn't/couldn't get into SL until well after things like that were phased out. I'm not sure if I'm the only person who feels this way, but I'm pretty sure getting softbanned for a month with no way to appeal (after getting force-teleported into a meeting and told I was doing something wrong for just minding my own business) would have absolutely put me off ever touching the platform ever again. 😕

I'm absolutely a fan of games/servers that cram proven troublemakers/hackers/people using cheat engines into a space away from the general population, but something about the "guilty until proven innocent" malevolent god approach there doesn't sit well.

Sorry if that came across to you as something bad..I mentioned Korea (But most of that was likely before you as you mentioned) and most got the idea of the crowd type I was running with back then.. I was minding my own business at that moment but far from innocent during those days😳

It's all Automatized now, you cannot AR party anymore. It was a different time, a wild west with tens of thousands of new players almost daily..they did the best they could...It was long before the Governance Team

Talking to them back then face to face was better then an Email stuck in your spam folder.

That was the Appeal😶 I got to talk face to face with not just with any linden.. but the founder of Second Life and when he asked me questions I did not reply and when I did it was just 'no' so instead of banning me he gave me time to consider my social skills better by sending me on an all expenses paid trip to a Special Resort

Linden Lab is not the same company today as back then, for better or worst..I today would rather praise them for what they can accomplish now then beat them with a stick for what they couldn't then.

For many linden lab is like that friend who doesn't always make the best choices, but we can't help but still love them anyways.

I started in 2009 and remember when they started the whole zindra  thing.  Wasn't that when you had to verify age or something before you could enter adult areas?  I know I didn't have to when I joined but did later on since this club Bacchus was adult.  I spent a lot of time there in the beginning.  They had themed dance contests 24/7 so I won money which was awesome for being a noob. The contests were always in theme or naked and naked was cheap!  Too bad there aren't places around like that anymore for new people.  It was a lot of fun.

My first years of SL were restricted to outside of Zindra because I wasn't age verified.
I was a creator. Why would I want to be age verified?

Anyways I recall my feelings in the run up to the Teen Grid being closed:

1 - Teens were Trouble, with a capital T. (supposedly). Stay away from them! Be on guard! lol
2 - There was always some story of scurrilous behaviour from hacking to weirdo pervs/sickos pretending to be teens.      (for unthpeakable purposes, not just innocent fun).
3 - Upon the actual grid closure it was like - omGAWD, any second now 30,000 angry teen avis are going to come thundering over the hill, (even if you lived in a skybox😵) rip your clothes off, steal all your stuff and tell everyone what colour underwear you had on that day AND post those pictures all over the web!

Scary stuff back then 😂

I can't remember if it was then or maybe later with age verification..But I remember one of those times people being pretty upset because all you had to do to be age verified was to not lie about your birth date.. hehehe

I remember the uproar going on, on the grid because of Ursula/Zindra most people didn't want adult content restricted or to verify. I had to when a friend restricted his mainland to adult just prior to the Ursula release. You didn't need to specifically age verify you could have payment used or on file to access the new adult regions. I remember one notecard i had on age verification claimed buying something on xStreelsl/Marketplace with PayPal counted in reality it didn't

It was 2011.  I remember in June people without adult verification were complaining they couldn't enter one of the Steelhead regions for a particular hunt stop.  At that time SL required a form of ID for the proof.  Then sometime between September and December someone mentioned in one of my groups that they were now taking people's word for it, and for weeks people who had just heard about it went stampeding to the main site to verify in case LL changed the policy again!
