  1. Using Bforartists which is just blender with a userfriendly interface. I'm using a dummy kit for a feral gacha avatar as my first test to make animations; I was going to upload a preview of the .bvh to see how it actually looked inworld but I'm getting this error. Can anyone explain/break down how to find and rename the root joint to "hip" in a way that a SUPER beginner can figure out, or whatever it wants me to do? This is the interface I'm currently looking at.
  2. I've been wanting to try my hand at 3D modelling for a while now and finally worked up the motivation and courage to look into how. I went with Bforartists over Blender as it's fundamentally the same program, just with a more simple UI that seems better suited to a beginner. I've got one of the body rigs already imported into the program but I'm at a loss of what to do next. There are no tutorials specifically FOR Bforartists and while most of the Blender tutorials are similar outside of a different looking UI and keybinds, I'm not exactly sure how to go about getting the armature/skeleton/bones to show up over the mesh body. Anyone else used the Bforartists interface that could offer some pointers?
  3. Trying to update to the newest version of Firestorm and the following happened: My antivirus (Avast) immediately sent the entire firestorm folder and .exe to the virus chest and claims it's infected with "IDP.Generic" aka throwing a false positive. Trying to restore it and create an exception gives me this popup: So I manually made Firestorm an exception, tried to reinstall it. Now I've got this happening and it's been going on for about 5 minutes: https://i.gyazo.com/f613cc93f04a52c826991a796bed8009.mp4 It seems to be making no headway and I can't finish installing Firestorm because of it. I'm at my wit's end and I can't figure out how to make my antivirus chill the hell out and let me install the update.
  4. That's so baffling, imo. Why create a virtual world entirely hinging on users interacting with each other or the environment, only to... not give functions TO interact with each other or the environment? It's like if someone were to make a first person shooter game and put it out on the market without functional weapon mechanics (and not patching them in for decades).
  5. ^ This. Comparing a jumbled pile of usermade content in a virtual sandbox is so different to a game with assets made by a triple A studio. It's like getting mad at a small family run restaurant that their food isn't the same quality as a multi-Michelin star gourmet chef's food; they're the same medium so to speak but they're nowhere close to actually being the same. The Sims is a great example though especially when you think about the console versions of 2 that actually let you control a sim directly with a third person camera and be able to walk around and jump. Then when you take the current gen of Sims into consideration and look at the plethora of mods for the PC versions, yeah, that's way more of an apt comparison. Limited character creation and a foundation to make your own world with the option/incentive to browse playermade content for an enhanced experience outside of what the base game offers.
  6. There are absolutely ways to make character models "ease" into animations and have limb bones stretch to about where they SHOULD be, it's just a matter of if SL's old engine/hardware can accomplish it. Modern games and even games almost a decade old now like GTAV have IK systems that allow for things like this; watch any video on The Last of Us 1 or 2 or Red Dead Redemption 2 and watch how the character arms stretch out depending on how you're positioned to grab items on shelves, or how models (especially in RDR2) have an animation to adjust themselves and line themselves up with whatever they're about to interact with before moving to interact. Even SL's current engine has some really primitive IK. Turn your AO off and adjust your hoverheight, or stand weirdly on an incline and watch as the legs bend and contort trying to adhere to the ground without sinking or floating off of it. Surely it wouldn't be impossible to either let scripts take control of the IK system and "adhere" them to surfaces/other avatars when code calls for it and/or update the skeleton similar to the bento skeleton that allows for IK use on hands as well as legs. Honestly there are a lot of things SL is really lacking but it's unknown if it can even be implemented. Jigglebones, for one. We have physics attachments and sliders, but it'd be nice to be able to rig mesh to predetermined "jigglebones" that utilize something similar to the physics we already have. Imagine bento tails having actual weight and bounce to them instead of relying 100% on animation HUDs? Imagine dresses being able to utilize jigglebones to avoid the awkward clay look mesh dresses have when the avatar walks? If only.
  7. Lol yeah Fallout 76 is a hot mess. My boyfriend and I actually wanted to get it until we realized it wasn't worth the price of admission (he got a chance to freely demo it). I added some more to my original post as well regarding the Fallout 4 comparison; it's a real head-scratcher. You think if someone obsessed with graphics AND high amounts of functionality, they'd be bringing Red Dead Redemption 2 into the conversation, not the game that turned people off of Bethesda's game style.
  8. Why does it even matter? Why bring "realism" into it when the entire point is to be something out of the realm of reality? Why does it matter what people play as and why is it not "appropriate" in your eyes? Didn't know another player's avatar choice was a thing that mattered, but sure. 😉 News flash, graphics don't mean everything. I used to use a site similar to SL that was 2D flash based-- the entire draw is social interaction. Not to mention SL was made almost two decades ago and they couldn't conceivably make any big changes to the engine used without breaking a ton of usermade content, aka the entire point of the platform. It's like if you went posting on a forum ranting that the first Call of Duty or something even older like GoldenEye are automatically terrible because of the multi-decade-old graphics and simple objectives. Not to mention harping on the graphics of something that's mostly hinged on other users making content is a moot point in itself. Also lol Fallout 4 multiplayer. It's called Fallout 76 and newsflash, it's terrible. Dunno why the first thing that springs to mind are what are objectively the worst Fallout games the series has but you do you. Edit: Actually, yknow what? Let's expand on the Fallout 4 thing that keeps getting brought up. You say things like this: But Fallout 4 was panned by a lot of fans of the franchise for being too: A) Restrictive B) Linear C) Shallow in comparison to prior entries D) Lacking freedom of prior entries So I'm legitimately curious why you keep comparing the two. The Fallout games have been widely known for giving the player a ton of freedom and having boatloads of unique and interesting npcs/towns/lore to uncover, yet Fallout 4 railroads you into a preset character, restricts dialog options by making the protagonist voiced and turning all dialog into "yes, yes but sarcastic, yes, no" instead of actual branching choices that would affect how conversations play out. It focuses less heavily on exploring to uncover new story beats and more exploring to collect resources and engage in combat, as the game only features 6 towns with npcs you can interact with in any degree other than in a hostile way (outside of buying DLC). Compare this to New Vegas which has way more (Goodsprings, Novac, NCR Correctional Facility, Camp McCarran, Jacobstown, Freeside, The Strip, Primm, Cottonwood Cove, etc). Fallout 4 forces you into "building your own" settlements instead and packing them full of nameless "Settler" npcs you have 0 dialog with in comparison to the rich towns of other survivors to interact with in other games. I just really don't see where the comparison overall lies when what Fallout 4 mostly entails is "pick up junk and craft things or upgrade guns to shoot more things".
  9. Welcome to SL! I'm Holli -- Feel free to IM me sometime if you'd like, I've been trying to branch out and meet people lately even if our interests aren't a total match. Exploring is fun! I'm a bit self conscious about my avatar choice while poking around at times, though, since they can be a bit on the unconventional side-- not to mention I'm totally fashion-blind and struggle to dress myself in much more than a hoodie and baggy pants regardless of whether I'm in SL or RL. xwx I mostly hop on SL to make skins for avatars and stuff, I'm very much into the creative aspect! When I'm not working on something new I'm usually chilling with my partner or just screwin' around with stuff I've found on the marketplace. 'v' Not sure how much I'd get into shopping in-world as the bodies I use require pretty specific items (and my spotty connection means I have to wait a bit to render things), but it'd still be fun to roam around and see what's out there!
  10. Yikes. I have to say I'm glad I didn't/couldn't get into SL until well after things like that were phased out. I'm not sure if I'm the only person who feels this way, but I'm pretty sure getting softbanned for a month with no way to appeal (after getting force-teleported into a meeting and told I was doing something wrong for just minding my own business) would have absolutely put me off ever touching the platform ever again. 😕 I'm absolutely a fan of games/servers that cram proven troublemakers/hackers/people using cheat engines into a space away from the general population, but something about the "guilty until proven innocent" malevolent god approach there doesn't sit well.
  11. Yet this entire thread has been nothing but "moaning" about how much SL sucks to you compared to modern video games because you won't give anything a chance. :v The bottom line seems to be that you can't see past graphical limitations or the fact that you're interacting with other real people on the platform instead of video game npcs and find every suggestion other people try to give "stupid" and won't consider, well, any of them. Which begs the question, why keep posting just to tear down others' opinions and advice/tips if they're not going to satisfy whatever expectations you have? (This is coming from someone who also struggles to find a place to really settle down and get myself out there to the general populace, mind you. You can't really help someone who won't give anything a chance or try to see from another person's point of view.)
  12. Looking for some hair similar to these for a new avatar I'm putting together. Bangs that cover the eye is pretty important, a lot of hair I've seen so far either doesn't have them low enough to where only the forehead is covered, or doesn't have bangs at all!
  13. Oh god I'd never think of sending someone thousands of dollars... ever, and I could definitely see how that'd look weird to LL. I'll keep that in mind!
  14. Yeahhh I'm honestly just confused at this point and I'm not even going to bother. Not sure how money laundering is even brought into it when it's money I made legitimately through selling things in the marketplace; isn't money laundering the act of recirculating illegal funds? :s The fact that it's apparently something that can even get brought up if you gift a friend L and they cash it for USD is unnerving. Also I dunno where $L100 is coming from-- I said $100 in L, as in $100 USD worth of lindens. I just wanted to gift someone something they could either use in-world or buy something nice for themselves irl but so far most responses garnered here have made me back out of that idea completely. I also don't know why it's immediately considered "fishy" to not want to go through the hassle of exchanging paypal info with another resident, when instead I could just give them the L and they could cash it themselves? Makes me feel like I shouldn't have even posted my question/considered it to begin with... Feels bad to get accused for something when the whole point of asking is so I don't accidentally do something wrong, yikes.
  15. Haha, meanwhile I went in with the intention of being a furry from the get-go! I just find them a lot more appealing-- I personally find that going the super realistic route with human avatars looks super uncanny. Pictures look great, but in motion with how floaty some animations are, it kind of gives them a marionette effect to me. xwx I'd love to find a good furry hangout but I've been looking for.. ever. The account I'm on here is an alt I originally made during a bored streak that I ended up getting new stuff for, my main is several years old by this point! Everywhere I've been is either a club with nsfw undertones or a hangout full of afk people. Still looking for somewhere I fit in besides in a quiet sandbox or my main's home. Speaking of my hours, they could very well be the culprit lol, I'm on at unpredictable times. Sometimes I'll go to bed at normal hours PST/SL time, sometimes I'll be up at 5 am, sometimes I'll be awake from 10 pm and won't sleep until 10 am, etc. A lot of those times I'm making mods, though! YEAH that pretty much hits the nail on the head with RP groups. I guess I'd also prefer "lighter" rp that's not super strict either and doesn't require constant upkeep. One-offs or simply chatting/reacting to things while vaguely in character while exploring I could see being fun for me, but I dunno how I'd feel about being roped into a big rp that requires everyone to schedule specific meetup times and be there regularly unless they wanna risk missing out or getting kicked out would work for me. ;w; I'm already in a 5+ year private/closed textbased rp with people close to me, anyway! As for IMs, I think a log is saved somewhere on your computer unless you turned that off in your Preferences. :0 Otherwise, if you're not logging IMs, it's probably somewhere in the void now.
  16. Hey there! I've been wanting to get out of my shell and meet more people too instead of sitting around an empty sandbox making textures. :'D I've also been meaning to add some picks to my profile with my interests but I haven't felt motivated enough lately... The creative side of SL is definitely what drew me though, too! All of my avatars are furries or ferals as I feel that gives me way more creative freedom with fur patterns and whacky colors or mix-n-matching parts than normal human avatars. You could shoot me an IM any time if you're at all interested in the fuzzier side of SL or just want another creative individual to talk design stuff with! I like exploring the mainland from time to time when I'm not busy with a project; It's always neat seeing relics of the pre-mesh era that are still up with the occasional modern home or shop here and there. (I've also been eyeing the RP aspect but I'm just too shy to consider it. Every place I've seen is pretty rule-heavy and/or longstanding with a lot of preexisting lore so I've been way too skittish to approach any. I feel like I'd be way too out of my depth, eep)
  17. Oh wow, yikes. Nevermind then, I don't want to have to contact support and go through a whole song and dance just to give someone some money. x: That's unfortunate. Edit: To clarify, I'd be sending over $100 in L as a gift/thank you for something. I'm guessing that'd be enough to cause problems, so I'll just figure something else out instead!
  18. Heya, first forum post here! Just wanted to make sure this is alright to do. I co-own a shop with my partner and we wanted to give a friend a chunk of our earned L with the intention of that friend being able to cash it out for themselves; This is fine, right? I just want to make sure there's no weird legal stuff I'm somehow overlooking. Thanks!
