The part of SL that personally draws me in, is that sure, you can make things. Making *things* is ok, but where else can you make *places*?  This is the part I love. To imagine a place, real or fantasy, and have the capability to create that place, to make it real in it's own way, takes it a step beyond creating a dress in blender. Having power over the sky itself. Try doing that in the first life. It shows what a true sandbox the world of SL is.

Any MMO game you can customize your avatar, most have wardrobe you can change at will, all are social platforms in their own way, but creating the world itself can't happen. That's decided by the game developer. What makes SL special is that you, the individual, make it exactly how you want it to be, if willing to put in the effort. That, in my opinion, is never truly shown well. The full sandbox aspect. How 99% of every detail on your screen outside of the viewer itself, was made by a user.

The fact I see so many comments in videos ridiculing the graphics of SL, shows that people don't understand that it's users who make the graphics, case by case basis.

And then we get to fashion .. and you get this. Whatever and whoever this is supposed to attract is beyond me. No one is dressing like this. No one is buying this. No one wants to join SL so they can wear their hair backwards, dressed in a bin bag with a dish cloth.

This ad for LL was done in 2015 but it was made during a time when there were still haute couture and avant garde designers in Second Life.  In the SL Modeling community, styling like this was pretty close to the norm for some.  Linden Labs needs to update their ads so don't take it out on the fashionista who put these looks together.

Oh I'm not .. just that any advertisements for fashion in SL need to be for fashion the broad majority want to buy and wear. Showing off stuff like this is fine .. just so long as it's not your only mention of the entire subject as it's not in any way representative.

To that end, I agree. There should have been a few different styles showcased. Ironically, the model in those pics, Absinthe, has now opted for the every day classic fashion because avant garde and haute couture is pretty much non-existent now in SL. Hopefully, LL will update those pics real soon! Just to give a little shameless plug, this is Absinthe and me in a recent pic.

This is the front page of Secondlife.com

These pages exist to attract new users, and to give those who have just started out pointers as to what they can do.

Moaning that LL don't advertise SL is pointless when this is where those adverts would drop them.

We really need to talk about this.

Some of those options aren't so bad for attracting new people.  I think listing Real Estate, Business, and Education for new people is too advanced for them.  Creativity too, since you need to learn how to build and use 3rd party apps.

I do!!😀 Well not exactly a dish bag, but those pics are representative of the style I am drawn to ( but alas can't always find). In SL I get to wear stuff I wouldn't be able to in RL (usually precisely because they are haute couture or avant garde and my finances don't stretch to those price tags ). I'm so bored with seeing the same old same old clothing in SL, much of it lacks the creativity, or individuality I love to see and buy. So this ad would definitely peak my curiosity.

As in RL there are many different kinds of people in SL with many different tastes and styles. What you may not like someone else will, and vice versa.

Creative takes you to that now infamous picture of someone building a car from parts not made in SL. Creativity in SL was a selling point when creativity could be done in SL. Make stuff in Maya (ha!) or Blender and upload it is really not the same.

http://go.secondlife.com/landing/creator/?lang=en

On this creator page wish they would expand on this creativity section to include more specifically art and culture. There are many people doing these activities inworld and SL has a lot to offer in that area. I mean it's amazing to think that you could bring to life art forms in SL that you perhaps couldn't in RL because of real world constraints whether they be resources, opportunity or others. E.g. you could create art installations, sculptures, photography, dance (we have SL ballet), immersive exhibitions etc. etc. I've seen some amazing stuff in SL. Why not have a video profile of an artist on that page too (there are high profile ones they could do).

I think the main banner should be on auto scroll. Every time I've landed on that page the  'Earn Money' big ad at the top is shown, and so seems like a blatant 'let's draw them in' advertising as often when people think they can earn money easily (hehe...they might be in for a rude awakening) they'll jump on board. Sad fact that's how it can be. I think it's such a shame though, as I really do believe that as a virtual world SL has so much more to offer than just making money, which I think is highlighted too often.  All the things you can do, places to see, communities to join (or just have some me time), the ability to do a myriad things you might not be able to in RL - that's the big thing, the opportunities and potential which you may just not have in RL, or just the fun to do the same things in SL that you do in RL but in a different way if you chose. That to me is what should draw people in rather than the money side.  I personally think it's more enriching.

I do believe this would appeal to more people if it was  presented in the right way and actually reach more people through better advertising. I really don't think it's as good as it could be. As has been said numerous times before elsewhere, the general impression of SL by those who don't know anything about it is that it's just a 'video game' or a place filled with sex, or some other negative perspective gained through stereotypes of it world presented in tv shows or films. Not as a world which can be rich with a myriad experiences and possibilities.

But maybe I'm just an anomaly in thinking this way:)

Ramble over:) I blame you CoffeDuJour! 😁 I was determined to post less on the forums...

SL should be shown as an accessible and welcoming place to all ages, but the push needs to be squarely at people in their mid to late twenties.

I am curious as to why you think this?

people grow older and waiting till they are 40 to get them on SL doesnt give you any less target audience.

I think personally that SL won't appeal to people in their late twenties like it does in their forties for the simple reason that in your late twenties you are out there doing the stuff you can do here more or less, either that or raising a new family. Those in their forties however have come to a point where kids are almost grown up and less dependent on you. You are settled and you have financial committments and time committments which preclude a lot of stuff you might otherwise go out and do. So they turn to SL

Amen.

People keep referring to SL as an MMORPG or a 'game', when it's not now and never has been; it drives me 'round the twist when I hear people refer to it as such.

SL is unique and always will be, but it's most assuredly not a game - and despite all our grumbles now and then about this and that, I still find it heartening to know LL haven't given up on it.

Because words have meaning, yet people use the wrong words all the time, so this should be no different. Life is a game.

Eh.  So when did the The Dukes of Hazzard become the epitome of fashion in sl?  I love Absinthe's style and her publication Ferosh and always have.  Ferosh was always challenging, sometimes shocking but always fresh, and I always found something in it that excited the hell out of me.  And the photography was always top notch. I was jazzed to see it come back recently, but a bit sad it had been gelded---still I understand that Absinthe doesn't make fashion, she only reports it...and there's not much to report.

Still, I'd much rather wear what you all are calling the dish cloth dress with the backwards hair from 2015 because it's still lightyears ahead of any fashion on the grid now, and seriously? * We have enough Blueberry girls.*

Hey, I sort of take exception to the OP's opinion that "education isn't a thing in SL."  I mean, having been a teacher in RL, and having been a teacher in SL almost back to my beginnings twelve years ago and all.  And the annual best practices for virtual world educators conference.  And places like Caledon Oxbridge University, New Resident Island, The Ivory Tower Library of Primitives, etc.  Not to mention that several RL colleges and universities maintain a presence in SL.

The whole point of Second Life is that it has something for everyone...from virtual romance/sex to sinking battleships.  With that range of possibility, there is no way that ANY come-on ad is going to satisfy everyone.

Road Trip

The issue I have with this picture, and well, most pictures LL use for their front page is that they convey an idea of secondlife that is not real.

The flickr/facebook culture of SL conveys images that do not correspond to what SL is either.

Unless I'm wrong and you where actually having an actual road trip and not just posing for a pretty picture (I do have road trips, GTFO for the win, but it's rarely smooth).

I think it might also be one of our issues with user retension... newcomers might feel they are being lied to.

No doubt.  However, there is something beyond Daisy Dukes and tied belly tops to explore in fashion, and some of us would like to do that.

i agree with this on an individual by individual basis

just that in the context of LL front page marketing, then there are a whole lot more Daisy Dukes who can only afford to buy a Premium membership and live in places like Bellisseria, than can afford to buy an island.  Marketing is a perception thing. Not that there isn't a place for high fashion, there is, but in my personal opinion its not what should lead on the front page, given the target market at this time

Who has an island?

But I get it.  It's a lowest common denominator thing, right?  But you lose me there, 'coz I can't imagine why you all are putting so much energy into discussing LL's marketing scheme.  I mean, are we discussing McDonalds next?

/me goes outside in the sun. Happy Summer, people!

Perhaps I am mistaken here, but my understanding is that SL can only have about 50,000 people on at once. I remember times back when SL was more popular that I could not log in. It also was common to not be able to TP into places because they were full. On top of that, the severe technical limitations of SL limit the success of places that attract a lot of people, as the lag is horrible (I used to refer to Dance Island as Lag Island). Sure, you can pull back your settings and speed up a bit, but for me at least that undermine the experience.

Sorry, I know this is getting OT from discussion of the SL website. I agree that has a lot of issues, too, such as being massively out of date in so many ways (the Destinations section is so bad I finally stopped using it, but would be a great resource if it actually was kept up).

Btw, I fall into the 'old person' demographic. IRL I have gotten older but still would love to go to clubs and dance and socialize, but am too old to fit in. On top of that, my RL wife is very much a homebody and does not like going out. I used to occasionally go out on my own, or with friends, but that led to issues too. SL used to let me go dance and socialize and have some fun and adventure and still be home with my wife. Unfortunately, what I loved about SL has pretty much died, so these days it is more about exploring and decorating.

One last OT thing, sorry. I find shopping SL extremely tedious because the in-world search is awful, and I cannot just walk about and look at stuff in stores like I can IRL; almost everything is out of normal camera range in one way or another, either the print is too small to read, or too high. I often shop by camming or flying. I would enjoy the experience far more if I could just walk about a store and see things. I use MP a lot to find stuff, for this reason, then go to the inworld store if they have one. I don't know if LL ever tries to get feedback or does focus grouping, but to me they really should. As someone said above, they seem to have some idea of what SL is that does not align well with that it actually is. I wonder if that is how we got Sansar.

Making money / Business : Right...after you spend a year and a day learning just one aspect of SL creativity to even remotely get to a level where people are actually going to be interested in your stuff and even then it’s hit and miss on whether you become successful.

Socialising : Where...visit a public hub and you have trolls speaking utter weirdness on voice which isn’t particularly inviting for a new comer. Visit anywhere else and you better hope that the click you try to engage with are open enough to new comers or even approachable, otherwise your in for an unhappy time. The rest is empty sims or avatars wanting “sum fuk”

Creativity : Creativity for the masses and the average user died in SL the day they introduced mesh. Once all it took to make something was to log in and Rez a few prims or right click to create some new clothing. Nowadays....too elitist, too much effort, most people don’t have the time or the energy to spend learning what is now a dauntingly huge task. To make decent mesh items and clothes, you better be ready to learn Blender, Avastar, Marvelous Designer, Substance Painter and even possibly Z Brush.

Realtor : Sure if you don’t mind making 1 whole linden for every sim you own so that you have at least SOME chance of getting customers amongst the bought down / grandfathered land barons.

Side thought. It would be neat when creating your avatar if you could choose what aspects of SL you want to engage in and then your starting inventory was tailored to match. So for example :

Designer : Start with a few decent free texture packs, some modifiable clothing, plants, fences, trees, a small house etc...stuff, whatever you think a designer would need

Scripter : Plenty off example scripts and projects in your inventory waiting for you. On HUD tutorial book taking you through the basic aspects. Examples of different HUD’s, basic combat system, game, npc etc etc etc

Socialite : plenty of clothing to wear out, emote HUD’s, link hud updated constantly with the latest and newest hangout spots, tutorials on blocking, muting, reporting abuse etc etc...I’m sure you all can think up more for this category

3D Modeller : links to blender, various communities, groups, linden developed tutorials, free mesh models to play with and analyse, basic but understandable info on mesh complexity, aka teaching them right off the bat that a single baseball cap should not have a 900li count

idk...ideas
