I'm a bit unclear on why this is awful?

Senpai is a reference to Japanese High school anime that is kind of sexual and possibly at times underage ish.. They never actually say ages but there is the assumption of teenage shenanigans.

"What does notice me senpai mean?

I hope senpai will notice me is a phrase inspired by anime and manga. In practice, people who use it tend to mean that they want to be acknowledged by someone they greatly admire."

No sex mentioned there.

Drake, I know you like to pretend that you know everything, but you may want to look into the actual meaning of the word Senpai and, directly related, the word Kōhai.

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senpai_and_kōhai

and if you don't like Wikipedia, I can find more sources for you.

read a little further...
"The phrase I hope senpai will notice me is based on the trope of a romantic relationship between a senpai and their kohai (the Japanese term for an underclassman)."

Also..

"In anime and manga, a kohai will sometimes pine after their senpai. While the exact phrase I hope senpai will notice me doesn’t appear in any specific anime or manga, the phrase aptly personifies what could be the inner dialogue of a kohai who longs for their senpai. Within the trope, the kohai desperately wants their senpai to take interest in them or to return their affections, often to no avail. In anime and manga, this dynamic sometimes even occurs between a female character and an older male character who aren’t actual senpai and kohai."

Anyone with any knowledge of Anime knows what "Notice me senpai" means.

Just like SL has become synonymous with sex and perverts, we dont need another trigger..

Yes, i know what the words actually mean, what they imply is another matter.. Especially with people who have no clue, like those who think BD/SM is all about perverted sex.

I like anime, I watch a few series, so I can say I fall into your category of being 'Anyone with any knowledge of anime....' "Notice me Senpai" doesn't automatically make me think of sex, just the same as the idea of a plumber coming round to fix a shower doesn't automatically make me think of sex. But I guess for those that watch porn films, it might be a different matter :P

And your suggestion of my reading a little further.... I don't associate 'a romantic relationship' with in your face sex

Why, just... WHY?Isn't there enough stigma surrounding SL without intentionally adding to it?

I'm dead puzzled still why this offends you. I just see something that reminds me of all the cartoons I watched as a little kid, eg Marine Boy who could swim under water because he chewed something called Oxy Gum.

Anime has changed drastically since 1966...

Anime & cosplay has been a thing in SL since I joined in 2008 at least, probably well before. It was just dressup fun.  I named my avie after Akane Tendo, and my friend made me the whole schoolgirl set costume - no nastiness involved. Maybe it's morphed into something else in some circles but people still enjoy some innocent cosplay too 😁

/me sputters. "Tell me you didn't just call SL a video game... Tell me you forgot the sarcasm font."

The only people who think SL isn't a video game are people too old or too 'not gamer' to have played any actual other MMO like titles...

This place is straight up the anime demographic. Moreso even than a LOT of other video games, even actual anime titles...

Ageism is a thing, too, you know.
