Motown-Socials.jpg

The legendary music label Motown has officially opened its doors with an all-new presence in Second Life – and we are ready to celebrate!

Please join us inworld at Motown today between noon-3 pm PT to meet and interact with Lindens, Moles, and other members of the Second Life community in this soulful music experience, launched in partnership with Capitol Music Group and STYNGR.

This is your chance to hear some great music, hang out, and dance during the opening day at Motown, which features multi-station radio streams of classic and contemporary Motown songs, animated gestures, and much more! You can learn more about Motown in Second Life at second.life/motown.

Hope to see you there!

New Android and iOS Alpha builds were published Wednesday, April 3rd.

We’ve been working hard for the last two months and are excited to share some major steps forward for the mobile client -- correctly displaying avatars and teleport improvements have been at the top of the list.

If your avatar depends on an avatar shape deformer, you should immediately notice the changes to avatar rendering! Avatars that didn’t render at all before, or didn’t look the way you intended, now render correctly.

mobile-april-2.jpg

mobile-april-3.jpg

mobile-april-4.jpg

Teleports are also greatly improved – no more getting stuck on a loading screen! If you’re on a parcel with streaming audio, you’ll now be able to use standard audio controls to stop/start and change the volume (tap main menu > tap the audio metadata at the bottom of the screen).

mobile-april-5.jpg

We also found and fixed some issues with the order of group chat messages.

There are definitely some known issues (h/t flexiprims!), but overall we’re sure you’re going to love the changes we’ve made in this release.

Interested in checking out the Second Life mobile client? All Premium Plus subscribers are invited to participate - learn more about how to apply here.

If you’re already participating in the Private Alpha, we appreciate your time, participation and feedback! Please continue to report issues in our feedback portal and from the app (main menu > Give feedback or file a bug).

We’ve heard you, and know that there are lots of people waiting for wider access to mobile.  We are working hard to expand access - and we will keep you updated with details and timelines as soon as we can!

Linden Lab

We’ve got some great news to share with you about the Second Life Mobile app. The latest Private Alpha release has a bunch of improvements and bug fixes – and even adds support for streaming audio!

Interested in checking it out? All Premium Plus subscribers are invited to participate - learn more about how to apply here…and be sure to check out this video preview to get the full scoop on why Second Life Mobile matters.

It’s been three months since we announced our Second Life Mobile Private Alpha and we have been blown away by the support and participation.

During this time - with help from the Private Alpha participants – we have been able to find and fix important issues and we’ve continued to make strides with feature development. We have made substantial improvements to connection stability, reduced the sensitivity of avatar movement, decreased the memory footprint of some inworld items (sculpts!), and added additional error logging so that we can continue to dig into new or existing issues. We also fixed a nasty issue with some avatars not appearing at all!

Based on feedback reported in Canny and from bug reports sent directly from the app, we have improved the user experience by decreasing the sensitivity of pinch and camera controls, moved the camera target closer to the center of your avatar and we are iterating on the size of the area for the vstick.

In addition to these improvements, we’re also excited to announce that our latest release of our Second Life Mobile Alpha app now supports streaming audio! Now you can enjoy music in Second Life on your mobile device with a friend or a group of friends inworld. (Note, streaming audio is off by default – go to hamburger > Settings > Developer tools > Enable Streaming Audio.)

What’s next? The UI is getting some additional refinement which we hope to share soon and we’re working on improving teleports, chat, and avatar rendering. If you are a Premium Plus subscriber, go here to apply to participate in the Mobile Private Alpha.

We are excited to continue this mobile development journey with you and look forward to expanding participation in the Mobile Private Alpha program.

With love,
Your Second Life Mobile Team

MacOS is used by many Second Life residents, but it is time for us to say goodbye to all the versions of MacOS X.  Starting now, the new minimum requirement to run Second Life is MacOS 11.

We will still allow some older versions of Second Life to log in, but without any support.  As with prior OS version sunsetting, we have set aside a version of Second Life available for download that we believe will continue to work with older systems. Over time, this version will become less functional as we continue to add new features and keep up with modern technologies.
https://releasenotes.secondlife.com/viewer/6.6.12.579987.html

We continuously monitor supported and unsupported technologies for compatibility with Second Life and we keep https://secondlife.com/system-requirements up to date. In the future, we will continue to end Second Life support for certain OS versions, including when their manufacturers end their own support of those versions.

We encourage you to keep your systems upgraded whenever possible.

See you in Second Life!

Linden Lab

Linden Lab strives to make positive change in the world by helping people connect, discover themselves, and grow both personally and financially. Ultimately, we build and support communities. Therefore, it is especially shocking to see the actions in Ukraine, to see the unwarranted attacks on people – on communities. We are heartbroken and horrified by the situation in Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis it has perpetuated. We are a proudly diverse team, and many of us have ties to these events - historically, emotionally, professionally, and socially. Our products reach worldwide, and many of our partners and customers are directly affected by this crisis.

As a leadership team, this crisis has challenged us to better define and embrace what we believe to be the core principles at Linden Lab – our TAO so to speak.

Specifically, our TAO says:

MAKE CHANGE ON A GLOBAL SCALE

Our work brings people together, builds communities. Our work helps people understand who they are, helps them be better. Our work brings empathy, helps people see the world through others’ eyes. Settle for nothing less than changing the world for the better.

We intend to live up to this principle, and while there is much work to be done, we are starting with:

Effective Monday, we will be further supporting our eligible Ukrainian-based community members by granting them a temporary 30-day moratorium on recurring account fees such as Premium Membership and Land Maintenance fees.  We will review this again after 30 days and assess what we can do as next steps where necessary. We invite any of our Ukraine-based community members to contact support with any specific questions they may have.

Finally, we encourage our community to look at ways that they can help show their support. It is heartening to see the Second Life community come together to support each other with numerous inworld events and helpful initiatives that bring us together as a force for good in both the physical and virtual worlds.

Greetings Second Lifers!

Today is a really big day for all of us together and we are excited to share that the Second Life portion of CasperTech is being acquired by Linden Research, Inc.

CasperTech has provided various business related services within Second Life for 13 years. Over that time, CaperTech has proudly provided continuous service for tens of thousands of Second Life businesses, and it has remained steadfast in its commitment to the merchants who have depended on those services.

This acquisition will ensure that all of the existing CasperTech services in Second Life will continue to operate without interruption into the foreseeable future, but it also opens up brand new opportunities to vastly improve the experience for our users as our next step in the CasperTech and Second Life journey.

You can expect to see the same great services that you know and love continue on, with all of the same functionality you enjoy today, but with closer integration into the Second Life ecosystem – and as such, an even more reliable and convenient experience.

We wouldn’t have gone forward with this move if we weren’t absolutely confident that it will be a positive change for all Residents and CasperTech customers.

We hope that you are as excited about this change as we are, and we thank you for your continued support as we all step boldly into the future together!

We have started a forum discussion here for anyone interested in participating with questions.

You can also watch Casper and I on a special pre-recorded Lab Gab today at 10:30am SLT!

SL_Sub-Logos-Blogs.png

Are you a Second Life blogger that is looking to expand your reach to a wider audience? If so, then you’ll want to consider opting in to join the new Second Life Blogger Network (SLBN).

This new community initiative aims to promote high-quality, independent blog content to the Second Life community via high-visibility channels including the Second Life Community pages, social media channels and eventually the Official Second Life Viewer login page. Examples of the type of content we wish to promote include how-to tutorials, fashion makeovers and/or looks, community and event news and destination walk-throughs.

The Second Life Blogger Network aims to drive traffic directly to your own blog via summaries of and links to curated posts selected from participating bloggers including the use of a brief text intro using the opening sentences of your post and usually one related image from the post. Readers will be directed to click through a link that directs them to your site to read the entire article or blog post.

This is your opportunity to reach a wider audience for your own Second Life blog! Participation in this new promotional program is non-exclusive and free. We encourage bloggers to continue to also work with other community blogger networks (such as BVN*) and inworld groups for the promotion and distribution of their original editorial content.

Interested? Here’s how to participate:

  1. Review the SLBN Terms & Conditions and Content Guidelines. This initiative does not aim to influence the editorial content of your independent blog, but we do have standards for the text and image content of those posts that we will promote. For example, images with nudity and/or copyright-violating content will not be considered for promotion. (Please note that there has been an update to the Terms & Conditions on September 28, 2021, under #2 Conditions.)

  2. If you want to participate, fill out the submission form and consider adding the optional Second Life Blogger Network badge to your website. You can grab the badge and learn about guidelines for placement here.

  3. Once you have opted-in, you are eligible to participate! We will then watch your blog for consideration for potential inclusion in our curated Community News thread and social media channels.

  4. Linden Lab staffers will frequently review posts from participating bloggers. While not all of your new posts will be selected each day, we do aim to promote several entries during the week from the pool of participating bloggers.

  5. Want to opt-out and no longer participate? Simply let us know by selecting the opt-out notification on the submission form and we’ll stop monitoring your blog for our curated news thread.

  6. Opting in does not guarantee that you will be featured. If you have further questions about SLBN, you can email editor@lindenlab.com

That’s it! Ready to get started? Check out the Community News blog to see examples of the types of independent blog content that we’re already promoting. We’re thrilled to already welcome bloggers Inara Pey (Modemworld.me), Sasy Scarborough (sasyscarborough.com) and Kess Crystal (theglamoursauce.com). Will you be next?

We also spoke to Kess about her group, BVN and announced out Official SLBN on our live-streaming show Lab Gab with Xiola and Strawberry - you can catch the replay below.

* Note: The Second Life Blogger Network is not officially affiliated with the Blogger & Vlogger Network (BVN) of Second Life, but we encourage our community to check them out at bvnsl.com!

Today we’re introducing an additional way for you to protect your account!

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is now available to all residents on their accounts. MFA is an additional step to prove your identity before gaining access to sensitive information or actions on your account. It provides an extra layer of security to supplement your username and password. Widely adopted by many products, MFA is an industry standard.

How does it work? You can learn more about MFA, find out what you’ll need to do, and activate it in the knowledge base article!

You will need to take action in order to activate MFA. It is entirely opt-in. Go to accounts.secondlife.com/mfa/status and get started!

Note: MFA adds protection only to your accounts.secondlife.com login. MFA does not affect how you log in to the SL Viewer. If you activate MFA, you should continue to change your password regularly and choose strong passwords.

In future releases we plan to extend MFA’s protections to additional pages on secondlife.com, the marketplace, and the viewer. We are also exploring an email-based implementation.

Hello, Second Life creators and shoppers! In our constant efforts to enhance your shopping experience, we will be doing some infrastructure updates. While this is undoubtedly a positive step towards a more robust platform, it means there will be a brief period of downtime. We understand the inconvenience this may cause, and hope to minimize it!

Scheduled Downtime:

On Wednesday, May 31st, we will conduct a scheduled maintenance update that requires approximately one hour of downtime. During this period, the Second Life Marketplace will be temporarily inaccessible. Please note that during this downtime all shopping carts will be reset. This means that any items currently in your shopping cart will not be saved.
We don’t want you to lose any items you had been keeping in your cart to purchase later, so please consider taking these steps below to keep track of them.

Preparing for the Update:

To mitigate any inconvenience caused by the shopping cart reset, we recommend taking the following steps:

1. Finalize Your Purchases: Before the scheduled maintenance, we advise completing any pending transactions in your shopping cart. This will ensure that you don't miss out on any items you intended to purchase.

2. Make a List: Consider keeping the items you aren’t ready to purchase in either your favorites or your wishlist (you could even share your wishlist with your friends if you’d like!). This way, you can come back to them whenever you’re ready.

We know it’s disruptive and we appreciate your patience while we work to upgrade the marketplace. If you have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to our support team.

Stay tuned for more updates and happy shopping!

Linden Lab

It’s been a very busy and productive 2023 for Second Life and our team is hard at work to make Second Life even better. The past year has seen several significant new features and improvements and we have quite a few more in the works (such as the PBR viewer, avatar customization ease including inventory thumbnails, a new mesh starter avatar, new LSL functions that improve the quality of life for scripters, and - yes! - a world and avatar-centered mobile-first Viewer).

One of our goals is to make virtual land ever more accessible to empower our Residents to create and build amazing virtual communities and experiences. That’s why over the past five years, we’ve lowered land costs several times, slashed setup fees, and introduced initiatives to further help reduce land costs (such as introducing Plus, lowering price of Mainland for easier entry into Mainland ownership and making a Homestead available for purchase with no restrictions for Premium Plus members).

In recognition of our upcoming 20th anniversary, we are making additional changes to land ownership to enable Second Life communities - great and small:

  • Dropping the monthly price of Full Regions by $20 for our 20th anniversary – effective immediately, Full Regions are now $209/mo.
  • Accepting Linden Dollars for land payments - a convenient new option for Premium Plus members. If you are a creator earning L$ inworld, you now won’t have to sell on the LindeX to pay for your region!

image4.jpg
Pictured: This chart shows Full Region price reductions over the past 5 years including today’s new pricing in USD. Upgrade to 30K Land Impact is available for all Full Regions for an additional $30 USD monthly.

This latest land price reduction, increased development of Second Life features, improvements, and an unfortunate combination of world-wide economic factors including inflation, all bring additional costs to our operations. We’ve spent time considering ways to manage these costs to minimize the overall burden on our Residents. We decided to absorb many of the costs and distribute some by making a change to Linden Dollar buy and sell fees. Effective today, we are changing LindeX fees as follows:

  • Increasing the buy fee to 10% with a minimum fee of $1.49 and a maximum fee of $14.99USD per transaction
  • Increasing the sell fee to 5%

We know that many community members may have questions about these changes, so please see the FAQ below for more information and context. For further questions, please join the conversation in our community forums. We’ll also be discussing these changes and sharing more from our 2023 roadmap on a special edition of “Lab Gab” this Friday. Stay tuned for a “first look” preview of the work we’ve been doing on Mobile in the next few days, too.

FEE CHANGES FAQ

Q: Which types of land does the new pricing apply to?
A: Full regions now cost $209. Full regions with 30K upgrade cost $239. EDU prices are still 50% off.

Q: What about Buydown / Grandfather pricing? Homesteads? Open spaces? Mainland?
A: All other land pricing is unchanged. However, we did just recently roll out a Homestead benefit for Premium Plus and a Mainland discount

Q: How much land can I pay for in L$? How do I pay for Land in L$?
A:  You can pay for up to one private region (some restrictions apply) in L$ as long as you maintain a Premium Plus subscription. See this article for details.

Q: How will the fee changes impact the cost of my Linden Dollar purchases and sales?
A: It depends on the size of your Linden Dollar purchase in each transaction.

For example, smaller Linden Dollar purchases (roughly equivalent to about $15 USD or less*) will see no change in cost as the $1.49 minimum charge is equivalent to the cost of the existing flat fee.

For larger Linden Dollar purchases (approximately $149 or higher*), the 10% fee will cap out at $14.99 maximum in a single transaction.

Sell fees will always be at 5% per transaction regardless of the size of the transaction.

Q: How will I know the exact transaction fee that I’m charged before I make the purchase?
A: The transaction fee will be clearly visible at the point of sale on the Buy L$ page on the Secondlife.com website. The image below shows you an example of where to see the transaction fee before the purchase transaction is completed:

image3.png

You will see the 10% transaction fee auto-calculate as you increase or decrease the amount of Linden Dollars you wish to purchase.

Q: Will the fee show up clearly on my transaction log or invoice?
A: Yes! You will see a dedicated line on both your invoice and transaction log for your “LindeX Buy/Sell Fee.”

Here is how it will look on your transaction log:

image1.png

Here is how it will look on your invoice:

image2.png

Q: When does the new fee rate take effect?
A: The new fee rate is effective today March 6, 2023.

Q: If I placed an order to buy or sell L$ before the March 6 change, but it has not yet been filled, will I be charged the old fee or the new fee?
A: Buy Orders placed before the change will be charged at the old rate. Sell orders will be charged at the rate effective at time of L$ sell order fulfillment.

* Disclaimer: The actual dollar value may vary depending on the LindeX exchange rate, which automatically matches your order with the market rate at the time of the transaction. These estimates are accurate at the time of this blog post but are subject to change.

Our Support Team stands ready to answer any questions you may have about these changes.  Please log into your dashboard at https://support.secondlife.com to contact us.

Linden Lab

It’s been a busy and exciting 2021 for Second Life with several significant improvements, most notably our recent transition to Amazon’s cloud servers. Our team is excited to continue to bring better performance and ongoing enhancements to make Second Life even better.

Our goal is simple: enhance the enjoyment of current Residents by making things faster, smoother, and more interesting. We are seeing an increase in activity in-world, so we are hoping these investments are starting to pay off for you. At present we are:

  • Investing in our infrastructure to further improve speed and cadence of updates
  • Overhauling the onboarding experience for the newest Residents
  • UI cleanup
  • Developing new marketing initiatives and entertainment partnerships to fuel growth
  • Preparing for SL18B
  • Less glamorous but no less crucial is our ongoing and growing work to ensure compliance with multiple regulatory requirements

We’ve spent time looking at ways to manage these costs in a way that minimizes the overall burden on our Residents. We decided to absorb many of the costs and to distribute some by making a change to Linden Dollar "buy fees."

Effective April 22, the current flat buy fee rate of $1.49 will be replaced by a 7.5% buy fee (capped at $9.99) applied to the total amount of Linden Dollars purchased in each transaction. The $1.49 minimum still applies.

This impacts the least number of transactions and still allows us to offset some of the costs for upgrades to our world.

Please see the FAQ below for more information and context about this change. For further questions, please join the conversation in our community forums.

BUY FEE FAQ

Q: How will this impact the cost of my Linden Dollar purchases?

A: It depends on the size of your Linden Dollar purchase in each transaction. We worked to ensure that most casual purchases will see no change at all.

For example, smaller Linden Dollar purchases (roughly equivalent to about $20 USD or less*) will see no change in cost as the new $1.49 minimum charge is equivalent to the cost of the existing flat fee.

As another example, a $40 USD purchase of approximately L$10,000*  would be charged a $3 “buy fee” (equal to 7.5% of $40).

For larger Linden Dollar purchases (approximately $139 or higher*), the 7.5% fee will cap out at $9.99 maximum in a single transaction.

Q: How will I know the exact transaction fee that I’m charged before I make the purchase?

A: The transaction fee will be clearly visible at the point of sale on the Buy L$ page on the Secondlife.com website. The image below shows you an example of where to see the transaction fee before the purchase transaction is completed:

new point of sale2.PNG

You will see the 7.5% transaction fee auto-calculate as you increase or decrease the amount of Linden Dollars you wish to purchase.

Q: Will the fee show up clearly on my transaction log or invoice?

A: Yes! You will see a dedicated line on both your invoice and transaction log for your “LindeX Buy Fee.”

Here is how it will look on your transaction log:

new transaction log1.png

Here is how it will look on your invoice:

new invoice1.png

Q: When does the new buy fee rate take effect?

A: The new buy fee rate is effective April 22.

Q: Does this fee apply to selling Linden Dollars, too?

A: No. This change only applies to Linden Dollar purchase transactions -- there are no changes or new charges added to other Second Life transactions (such as selling Linden Dollars).

* Disclaimer: The actual dollar value may vary depending on the LindeX exchange rate, which automatically matches your order with the market rate at the time of the transaction. These estimates are accurate at the time of this blog post but are subject to change.

As promised in our PBR Materials announcement last year -- as of this morning’s Second Life server grid roll, we have increased the allowance of Land Impact by lowering mesh Download Weight by 15% for all of Second Life! Since much of Second Life today consists of mesh content, anyone who owns or rents land will see more land impact available on their parcels.

How can I check if my objects have been affected? Right-click on the object you want to inspect, then click Edit, then click the More info link to see the current Download weight.

Increased Land Impact Allowance Is Here.png

We’d like to take this opportunity to remind residents that this allowance is being given for no charge and is intended to help offset any additional Land Impact spent on manually rezzed reflection probes and lights, and of course in anticipation of the upcoming Mirrors release.

Land Impact is a finite resource, please rez responsibly!

Updated: Frequently Asked Questions.

Q.  My private region can hold 20,000 prims (Land Impact). How many prims will I have after this 15% Download weight reduction?

  1. The region will still only be able to hold its original 20,000 prims, as the same for any parcel, or 30k private region. With this update mesh object's download weight has been reduced, requiring less land impact for objects where download weight is higher than physics and server cost, and letting your prims go further. Imagine a box that can only carry 20 pounds. With this update, the box is still the same, but the objects inside are lighter!

To learn more about how weight is factored into an object’s land impact visit: https://community.secondlife.com/knowledgebase/english/calculating-land-impact-r273

Q.  What types of items are NOT affected by the update?

  1. Animesh, primitives, and sculpties are not affected. The update will only affect static mesh objects that are rezzed onto your land.

Q.  How can I see what my meshes download weight used to be?

  1. At this time you will only be able to compare it by rezzing an object on the Beta Grid (Aditi) running older server code, which will be for a limited time as we are constantly moving forward. Any Beta Grid regions running server build 2024-02-21.7995320426 should report the old Download Weight.

Q.  This is confusing.  Why didn’t you raise the region's prim (Land Impact) limits?

  1. Download Weight effectively controls the scene triangle budget.  While the limit was appropriate when Download Weight was first introduced, it’s too restrictive by modern standards.  By adjusting Download Weight independently of other resource limits, we can avoid overloading other systems (such as physics and script time) that are already using appropriate limits.  Essentially, the weights were out of balance, with download weight carrying too much emphasis compared to other weights, and this change moves towards a better balance.
Linden Lab

One day you are in Second Life, minding your own business while you walk through your favorite store when all of the sudden you get a private message from someone with a link to an item on the marketplace. Without thinking about it, and curious what the item might be, you give it a click. The page loads up looking just like the marketplace, except you need to log in so you happily enter your username and password. Next thing you know, your linden dollar balance is suddenly gone, and you can no longer access your account. You just fell victim to a popular scam known as Phishing.

Phishing scams are a common form of online fraud that targets unsuspecting individuals by tricking them into revealing their sensitive information. The goal of these scams is to steal your passwords, credit card information, or other personal details. Phishing scams often take the form of emails, or in the case of our example, websites that look identical to the site you are used to browsing. To help protect yourself from these scams, it is important to know how to recognize and avoid them.

Fear not though, we have some tips to share on how to keep your online accounts safe from phishing scams:

  1. Be wary of unsolicited messages or emails. If you receive a message from an unknown sender, or really even a friend (you never know if their account was compromised), be cautious before clicking on any links. It’s always best to err on the side of caution.
  2. Check the website’s URL. Before logging into the website, make sure you’re on a legitimate site. A phishing website will often have a similar looking URL, but with slight variations. Check for spelling errors, or subtle changes in the website’s address.
  3. Look for security indicators. Legitimate websites will often have security indicators, such as a padlock icon or “https” in the URL, this indicates that your information is being transmitted securely. If you are not sure if a URL is legitimate, you can always send in a support ticket and ask for clarification.
  4. Use strong passwords. A strong password is one that is at least 8 characters long and contains a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. You should also use a different password for each of your online accounts to reduce the risk of multiple accounts being compromised if one password is stolen.
  5. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). This will add an extra layer of security to your account by requiring a second form of identification in order to access your account to make account changes.

The important thing to remember is to be vigilant. Phishing scams are constantly evolving, so always remember to take a moment, think about what you are going to be clicking on and do not let a sense or urgency rush you to do something until you are certain it is safe to do so.

By following these tips, you can reduce your risk of falling victim to a phishing scam and protect your account, and your linden dollars.

Homesteads for Premium Plus

News

Homesteads for Premium Plus.png

As featured in the October 21 edition of Lab Gab - we’re excited to announce a new Premium Plus benefit available beginning today, November 1, 2022.  Premium Plus members are now eligible to purchase up to one Homestead on their account, without the requirement of a full private island region.

Premium Plus members who wish to take advantage of this new benefit will need to maintain their Premium Plus account status, in good standing, for the duration of ownership of the Homestead region on their account. In the case of a downgrade to a lower subscription level, it will be necessary to cancel or transfer the Homestead to another Resident eligible for owning Homestead regions.

To place an order for your new Homestead, please go to support.secondlife.com and submit a Support Ticket under the following category:

Land & Region > Order Private Region

Fill out that form including the unique name you prefer and location on the grid for placement.  A support agent will be in contact with you soon to discuss your request.  Region names must adhere to our naming guidelines.  For more information about Private Regions, please review the Private Regions knowledge base article and Private Region Pricing.

There is no change to Homestead ownership for all other accounts: everyone is still able to own Homestead regions as long as there is at least one Full private region owned on that account as well.

As a reminder, Homesteads cost US$149 for the first month with setup and US$109 per month thereafter, plus applicable VAT and taxes.

And, of course, if you have any questions, please reach out to our Support Team and they will be happy to assist.

We are pleased to announce we have added MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) protection to the Viewer. Recently we added MFA to web login. Now it works with Viewer login as well.

To start using it, you will need to enable MFA for your account on this page: https://accounts.secondlife.com/mfa/status

For more info about how our existing MFA works, see Introducing Multi-Factor Authentication for your Second Life Account and the Knowledge Base Article

You will need to download and install an MFA-enabled Viewer: https://releasenotes.secondlife.com/viewer/6.5.5.571282.html

When you try to log in with an MFA-enabled Viewer, you will be prompted to enter a token from your authenticator app. If you have chosen to save your password information, a valid token will be saved for 30 days.  After 30 days your next login attempt will require another token.

For now, if you try to log in with a Viewer that is not MFA-enabled, nothing will change, and you will still be able to log in without a token.  However, if you have opted in to MFA then a token will be required for all Viewer logins beginning in the near future.

  • Increase to 30,000 Land Impact -- $30 monthly add-on

We have permanently lowered the price on the original version of Event Regions, which will be called Event Regions Elite, priced at $599 per month with no setup fee.

Each Event Region Elite includes all features of Pro:

  • 175 avatar limit
  • More than 20% improvement in script performance
  • Extended chat range (upon request) -- allowing everyone on the region to see and participate in Nearby Chat if desired

If you make a mistake with region content, or want to restore a previous build, you can now request to roll the region back to a specific time. Please note that rollbacks will still be at Linden Lab’s discretion and are not guaranteed. Rollback services are available at $25 per request.

We continue to work on performance improvements for Event Regions as well as all of our land products. As well, you’ll see performance improvements in the latest release of the Performance Viewer.

Event Regions

News

PLEASE READ OUR UPDATED EVENT REGIONS BLOG POST: https://second.life/eventregions

Greetings Second Life Community!

We are excited to bring you a shiny new land product: presenting “Event Regions”!

image2.png

Have you ever dreamed of being able to hold large scale events in Second Life? Have you ever wished you could keep the lag monster at bay during large events? Perhaps you just want your scripts to all go vroom?  Well wonder, wait and wish no more! Sporting the latest upgrades in grid technologies that have been enabled by our migration to the cloud, these regions have been tested running large events in real-world scenarios such as those really big monthly shopping events, and live performances! Our tests saw nearly 200 avatars successfully able to shop and party in these regions.

We are really excited to present this new region offering to you today.  Here are the details on the capabilities and what is included with the Event Regions type:

  • A maximum avatar limit of 175 per Event region
  • Up to 30,000 land impact
*Region will support up to 30,000 Land Impact. During performance testing, Linden Lab has identified a few cases where exceeding 20,000 Land Impact will degrade performance with a large number of concurrent visitors.
  • Extended chat ranges upon request, allowing chat to travel further across the region
  • RaaS: Rollbacks as a Service - Request to restore your region to a previous state as needed. Some restrictions apply
  • IaaS: Instancing as a Service - Request to have your region duplicated to another region
  • White glove Concierge service
  • Over 20% Improved script performance

Pricing Details:

For initial release, we are pleased to offer an introductory price of $599, with no additional setup fee through June 6, 2022. Following the introductory pricing, event regions will have a set-up fee of US$999 (includes first month), and a rate of $899/month after the first 30 days.

Tommy Linden

The team at Second Life is dedicated to ensuring you have a safe and fun experience while exploring all that Second Life offers. You will come across many opportunities offered by other users in a virtual world, but not every offer is genuine. The allure of free Linden Dollars, or land for example, can be a tempting one, but as the saying goes: if an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

We wanted to take some time today and caution our Residents to be mindful of unsolicited messages that include links asking you to log in or download something from an unknown source. A few months back, we made a post about how to protect yourself from phishing scams: How to Keep Your Account Safe from Phishing Scams.

Our friend, Inara Pey, has recently published a blog which illustrates the need to be very careful when receiving an unsolicited link coming from someone you don't know: https://modemworld.me/2023/11/06/dissecting-the-free-l-viewer-scam-chaser-zaks/

It is important to remember that downloading software from unknown sources has a very real risk associated with it. You could unintentionally allow someone to monitor your keystrokes or even gain complete control over your computer. It has the potential to expose not just your Second Life password, but all other important information you have on your computer.

We want to remind our Residents about best practices for account and computer safety.

  • Be wary of suspicious links or attachments sent by other users. These may be attempts to compromise your account or computer.
  • Use strong, unique passwords for your Second Life account and enable multi-factor authentication.
  • Keep your viewer and operating system up to date to benefit from the latest security patches and improvements.
  • Only download and install the official Second Life viewer, or an approved Third-Party viewer directly from the links provided by our site.

We hope that everyone continues to enjoy Second Life, and look forward to our continued safe, and secure explorations together.

Linden Lab

At Second Life, we are committed to creating a richer, more immersive, and safer environment for everyone. With that spirit, we’re excited to share several important updates and developments that not only aim to improve our virtual world but also ensure that our community continues to thrive in a safe and engaging manner.

Bringing Second Life Everywhere: Mobile and Desktop Updates

Our development team is working tirelessly to make Second Life accessible wherever you are, whether you're on a mobile device or sitting at your desktop. While our Mobile App is still in Private Alpha, we’re looking forward to expanding access to more members of our community shortly. Our new App promises to bring all the richness and beauty of Second Life directly to your mobile phones and tablets. Don't miss our latest developer update video for a sneak peek at what’s coming!

On the desktop front, we're gearing up for a wider release of some of your most requested features for the Second Life Official Viewer. We're particularly excited about rolling out innovations like Mirrors and 2K textures, which were showcased in a recent "Lab Gab" video

Making Second Life Safer: Strengthening Community Protections

Our priority has always been to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all while preserving the freedom of expression that makes our virtual world so special. That’s why we’re working to further enhance the safety and protection of the Second Life platform. These efforts include strengthening some of our community and employee policies as well as evaluating improvements to our age verification process.

One area of ongoing scrutiny both internally and externally concerns child-presenting avatars. We recognize and want to acknowledge the vibrant community of residents who enjoy roleplaying as such, and we also feel that it is crucial to reinforce our stance that sexualized ageplay is strictly prohibited. Today, we are updating our Child Avatar Policy to ensure a clear separation and to safeguard all community members. We know that this update has the potential to cause confusion or concern in our community, so we’ve prepared an FAQ which we will continue to update as questions come up.

Strengthening Internal Policies and Community Engagement

We recently posted our initial response to community concerns about alleged violations of company and community policies by employees, contractors, and community members. Since that time, we have conducted multiple thorough investigations to look closely at whether there were specific infractions or problematic interactions that needed us to take action.

The investigation determined that all Lindens and contractors have stayed in compliance with our own community guidelines, as well as unwritten, ethical guidelines. I do not make this statement lightly, and I know there will be plenty of discussion. What I can say is that there is no incentive, monetary or otherwise, for me to mislead the community. At some point, the community has to trust that we, the Lindens, do well when the community thrives. We may make mistakes along the way, and we know that our community will engage with us when we do. Second Life is an enormous virtual world and we have to walk a very fine line between policing and preserving freedoms while also protecting the future growth and health of Second Life as a platform that respects diversity and creative expression among our community.

The findings did highlight opportunities for improvement. As a result, we are making updates to our internal policies to raise the standard for how Linden employees should respectfully engage with community members. This addresses multiple forms of engagement including how we present ourselves, how we interact with the community (even in moments of conflict), and how we minimize the perception of conflict of interest and favoritism in our interactions. Additionally, there have been specific actions we have initiated or finalized:

  • Updated our Child Avatar Policy
  • Updated our internal Policies and Procedures
  • Implemented personnel changes
  • Initiated management improvement programs
  • Committed to Community Roundtables (see below)
  • Committed to increased transparency and accountability

Looking ahead, we are excited to announce the launch of our Community Roundtable with Second Life Leadership. The first one is scheduled for May 20 at 9:30-11 a.m. PT. This will be an opportunity for community members to connect directly with our top executives, share your input, and discuss ideas on enhancing Second Life. This initiative represents another step in our efforts to improve our community interactions, ensuring that your voice is more directly heard and valued.

I will be a part of the first Community Roundtable and welcome you all to attend.

Building a Better Second Life Together

All of these updates and initiatives are part of our broader drive to continually improve Second Life. Stay tuned for more, participate in upcoming events, and let's make Second Life better together.

Enforcing Viewer Login MFA

News

mfa copy.jpg

We previously announced a grace period following the release of multi-factor authentication support in the Viewer so that third-party viewers had time to implement it. Well, the "near future" we mentioned has arrived! We rolled out a login change today that requires MFA Capable viewers for accounts that have MFA enabled in their preferences. If a viewer is not MFA Capable yet, then those accounts will no longer be able to log into Second Life using that viewer.

If you haven't done so already, please see the wiki for details on the new login parameters needed to make your viewer MFA Capable.

image1.png

If you haven’t turned on MFA for your own account, visit the knowledgebase article for instructions on how to do so. MFA provides additional protection in the event of a phishing incident or other password compromise. When you speak for your third-party viewer project, the authenticity of your voice in Second Life really counts!

UPDATE: Please note that MFA is opt-in and this only affects those Residents that have enabled MFA on their accounts. We recommend all Residents take advantage of this extra security feature!
