Has anyone seen a place where you can get a free apartment?

This is a long shot, but my linden home is now gone and due to a lot of real world expenses I can't see myself purchasing lindens or a membership for a while. I'm curious if there's anything anybody knows about free apartments? I do know about Christopher street as I'm gay and they give LGB+ members free homes but they are currently full. I can't pay rent I don't even have enough linden to buy a head for my avatar. I'll take whatever I can get, even a box at this point :)

Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask.

For many years I was a beach bum in SL.  If I wanted privacy, I'd just rez a skybox in a sandbox.

Look for places that have rez rights either for everyone or for a group that's free or cheap to join. There are plenty of places where you can basically squat, but you have to look for them and then don't leave any prims sitting around. Just use their furniture, unpack stuff and then pick up your boxes.

For a male mesh head, join Akeruka [AK] now while it's free. They might have a $L 1 mesh head group gift later this month (June), since they had a free female and a free male mesh head last June, as well as last December. Their Advanced heads work with Lelutka Evolution skins. Their newest heads work with EvoX skins.

I'd love to but seems the only jobs are DJ / Sex work and both of those are out of my expertise lol.

Hosting at clubs is also an option.  I see a couple you could try...

I lived almost my entire 1st year homeless.  I joined Skybeam Community, set home there in the trees, opened boxes and changed clothes.  You can still enjoy all SL.has to offer without a residence.

I understand the need to own a home. There's nothing like owning a place to decorate and live in. Building in a sandbox might help fulfill that home ownership urge. Prims stick around for quite a long time in many sandboxes. At least longer than I can stand being logged in.  I once spent a long time skybox building in a sandbox and would just rez everything out and take it back in at the end of the session. I even learned how to use one of those multi rezzers. In that time, I learned a lot about building and amassed a large selection of free furniture that I was able to make a great skybox when I actually started renting land again.

Being a beach bum is also not a bad idea. I've done this too. It's quite fun and there's a lot of nice public beaches to hang out on.

Over the years I’ve encountered various places that come & go that would offer free homes. One was a Tiny Empires group, lots of role play groups will have group land that might offer homes to active members.  Sometimes you just randomly encounter a new friend with land that will let you bunk with them.  But like others suggested look around for a non demanding job,  they’re not all escorting (which I’m not putting down) & the djing is yea, a bit of an investment in an already saturated market.  Until then yes, you can always rez a platform on a sandbox & stick it in the air, pick it all up in one piece when you log & rerezz each use (just don’t expect a lot of privacy).

I agree.  I didn't bother with a home for the first couple of years I was in SL.  It's not like you will end up sleeping under a bridge.  Unless you accumulate the sort of stuff that you want to display in a house somewhere, you have a lot more freedom to wander around and enjoy SL if you aren't tethered to one spot.

I've been in SL far longer than this avatar's history may suggest. In over a decade I rented a small sky home for a week once and although it was ok I didn't feel the need to continue renting beyond that. Apart from that every linden ever purchased has gone on my avatars, not land or furniture etc..

There are many sandboxes around and it's just a case of finding a few where you don't get bothered by trolls or disruptive people. You can always hop over to another if a problem avatar messes with you so it's good to have a few options. I place LM shortcuts to mine on the top bar in Firestorm so I can move quickly if I need to, also useful when a security orb gives you an ejection warning from an old landmark.

The regulars at these places get to know you and leave you alone, or become chatty and can share gift ideas and tips etc.. Some stores have rez areas and tend to be quiet.

I own a third of a sim. I've actually been thinking about looking for someone to stay there because it is really big to live there by yourself. You are welcome to come check the place out and we can talk. If it suits you, you can live there for free. I can either work on changing the mainland to add another house, or create a skybox for you. IM me in-world.

Kinda depends what you want the home for, eg. A place to set home to for logging in (can also use Infohubs), a place to sit and chat with friends undisturbed (common areas in Linden home neighbourhoods are quite nice and often empty), a place to rez your furniture (sandbox or friend who doesn't mind you squatting on their land). I've used all of these at times 😄

I think your best bet is to contact @xianxii. However, Starrfish Beach has free apartments. They are "first come, first served" and are mainly used for short term romantic encounters. They're pre-furnished and no-rez. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Gwydion/203/129/23

There's some free beach shacks at FRANCE Entraide & Amitie. It would help a lot if you spoke French. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Happy Hills/35/105/21

There's the city of Chilladelphia, which offers free stores and apartments on a first come, first served basis. It's an Adult region. You may not use a security system. You must ask for a group invitation and join the group to claim a vacant property. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Chilladelphia/132/48/3617

The Linden Home regions in Bellisseria offer some great hang out areas. If you find a rez area near a beach, a Mole cabin, a shack or hidden cave, that might be all you need.

Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask.

Linden Lab doesn't provide us with free tier, so those of us who own land and rent it out can't afford to offer free apartments because we're not rich in RL and can't subsidize someone else's Second Life. But a 25L skybox, which is as low as I have (and many others) is only 10 cents in RL. You buy Lindens for US $4.00 per 1000, and then you can get a 10-cent skybox or whatever.

Let's say  you offer a skybox for $25/50 prims, or $25 however many prims, usually at least 10 -- the land required to put out even a small skybox takes up more prims than you obtain from rent. So usually such cheap rentals are subsidized as loss leaders or "for newbies".

Otherwise you can go hang out at sandboxes, or events, or go to places like our SL Public Land Preserve where you can just basically perch. But as you have discovered, you do find some owners providing free spaces, especially if themed or RP related. So they can be found.

Honestly I haven't bothered (yet) to buy/rent or even perch anywhere in SL. There are so many open homes and motels to stay in for a bit, so I can act out some of my fantasies in them. I make sure to clean up my mess of unpacked boxes before I log off at a safe hub LOL

This is a very workable approach, if you do a little bit of diligent searching. However, ever since I got my first home (an 8192 parcel in the Fairchangs) I haven't felt comfortable being homeless in SL. I even feel incomplete just "staying at a friend's" or hanging out in the faculty lounge at Caledon Oxbridge University. I need my OWN little space.

I like having my own space too. I want a space that feels safe, peaceful, and my own. Some people enjoy being social, so for them joining a group that lets then rez stuff and set home on group land might be a good option. Some people want to explore and move whenever they like, so renting or even squatting in different places might be best for them. I like to nest and decorate my own little (or sometimes not so little) space, but I encourage newbies to rent in different places in order to appreciate some of the wonderfully varied sims in SL. No one is obligated to pay rent if they're happy being SL homeless, just be courteous and respectful of the other people using SL.

Prokofy Neva offers some very nice and inexpensive rentals for those who want to experience different kinds of SL homes. (My favorite is the Lovecraft-style lodge.)

I wonder how long I'd be Prok's tenant before I discovered a multi-episode series of "Rental Dementia" blog posts devoted to me . . .

/me muses 😏

I have to say that I have heard, with only one or two exceptions, pretty much nothing but good things from those who rent from him.
