On Friday afternoons I usually do my Highlights from the Destination Guide blog post where I share some of the latest interesting destinations from that week. However, the tool we use to update the Destination Guide is still in the process of being uplifted, read the details here. It is one of the final updates left for uplift and we are hoping it should be done by the end of next week. 

Since I haven’t been able to add anything to the Destination Guide, I thought I would share some Art events that you can attend this weekend in Second Life.

The Janus Gallery

Curated by Chuck Clip, this gallery is named for the Roman god of new beginnings, transitions, doorways, and time. They hope to usher in a new era of art in Second Life while keeping an eye on the roots they came from. Sinful Retreat, on which the gallery stands is a virtual playground where artists are welcomed with open arms. They strive to make a cohesive, evolving environment out of art.

Windlight Art Gallery

Find your inner calm at Shamatha in Second Life, a Buddhist-inspired virtual healing retreat, full of peaceful nooks and crannies and inspiring open spaces, welcoming you to discover your inner center.

A practicing Buddhist herself, owner Aire Xaris feels that mindfulness is something the world can use a little more of and she wanted to create a space where Residents could find some peace or tranquility. 

“It is my Zen to create these scenes”, Aire says and adds that “if this place encourages someone to feel less anxious, or angry or sad by visiting, then it is worth it. What is so funny is that it took me so long to find out what it actually was that brings me the most joy out of playing with these digital crayons that Philip Rosedale gave us back in 2003.”

Aire expands on the name she gave her region, Shamatha: “It literally means to stop and I really like it when people tell me that they've been inspired to look into meditation, or that they fell asleep while sitting up in the big moon sleepscape I built.”

This serene region is a place of wonder. The magnificent structures that dot the landscape provide a sense of peace for those who wander its paths.

Shamatha

Shamatha is a place of stopping. A digital Buddhist community and Nature preserve that offers a variety of scenes landscaped and designed to calm and offer the traveler refuge through guided meditation. There is a free interactive Wind light and meditation music Hud and teleport gates that lead to private and picturesque areas throughout the region. All are welcome to take refuge and discover their inner calm.

Take a trip to Kawaii City, a cyberpunk metropolis where you can gaze at skyscrapers while relaxing at the cafe.

Builder and owner of Kawaii City, Naru Darkwatch, shares her inspiration for this photogenic destination:

“Somebody asked me what inspired me to build Kawaii City. To answer that question, I must explain some of the background I have had in my Second Life journey. 

I joined this fantastic world because of the roleplaying environment and the freedom it gave you to create a character almost 100%, just as you want it to be. But as Real Life took more and more of my time, I came to SL more for the friends, music, and to relax with a little building; it started with Kawaii Café so we could all have coffee in the mornings before work and not get yelled at by a GM because we were not all in character. 

Little by little, a city began to take form as more land became available to buy. The cafe and city have always been open to the public as I wanted to make a home for those who did not have a place to go, where you could be who you wanted to be but still be in a cyberpunk environment and not be forced to roleplay all the time. 

Eventually, it took some convincing from friends to list it in the destination guide as I’m quite critical of my creations, but many said I should, so now it’s there. 

Many have asked if I will open it up for RP, but my goal for the city is to keep on building it, improving it, and not to set up rules on who can visit and what to do there.”

Start your 2023 by enjoying the sea breeze at Butter in Second Life, a rustic little seaside town where you can relax on the beach or add some adventure to the new year by going camping, hiking, or more!

Owner of Butter, Mona Molinaxil, shares her motivation for creating it:

“My motivation for Butter is watching other people's creations and then feeling an urge to actually create something myself.

I started adding all the things I like in the region first: Food, puppies, coffee, good music, dances, clutter, and rustic buildings. All with a bit of quirk to it. 

Butter is by no means a finished project. Things are always changing. New items are added, and areas that I get tired of or don’t like are changed. Being limited by LI limits forces some choices to be made. And that is not a bad thing, really.

If you want something new, you might have to remove something old. 

Currently, a part of the region is closed off for construction. One day it will be and it will be open to the public again.

I did not want private homes or rentals on Butter, because one of the most annoying things I know when exploring SL is to run into ban lines and being kicked out by security systems. I wanted furnished and decorated houses where people could hang out and explore without feeling like they are trespassing.

And by the way: visitors can change the music stream and group members can rez their photo props.

Basically, Butter is made to be a place where I would like to hang out myself. I just hope other people like it too.”

When asked what Second Life means to her, Mona says:

“I have been in SL for many many years. I did leave at some point but came back (Who was I kidding? I have made great friends and I have always been creating something.)

I want my SL to be relaxing and fun, not a chore. SL is where I can escape, relax and do some low-key socializing when I have free time, like going to live concerts or special events around the grid.

With a full-time job, I have never had the time and energy to learn how to make my own mesh but creativity is one of the big perks in SL for me. And I can still be very creative by designing regions like Butter.

Both the opportunity to create something of my own and watching other people create things, and getting inspired by them, that is what SL means to me.

There is something for everyone out there.”

Butter

Butter is a rustic, little seaside town. Relax on the beach, go camping, hiking, or dancing. Visit the docks or the farm to meet the locals. There are plenty of places to eat, drink, and hang out. Refresh your pixels at the spa and don't forget to bring your camera! If you look a bit closer there are also several cozy hideaways.

On December 22nd I announced that the Second Life Destination Guide was being uplifted to the cloud. That process is still underway, however, we have run into some errors. For this reason, the web publishing tool that allows us to update the Destination Guide is still unavailable and will be for the foreseeable future until these errors can be corrected. I am hoping it won’t be much longer than another week or two. I will continue to update you on this status every Friday. 

The submission form for the Destination Guide is also giving errors because of this, so please continue to email your submissions to editor@lindenlab.com and we will add them as soon as we have access again.

In the meantime, you can still find many destinations to explore on the Destination Guide, as well as events to attend on our Events page.

One very exciting event occurring this weekend is at the ACS region. The American Cancer Society is celebrating an important milestone - $4 million USD raised in Second Life to help fight cancer! The party, which features live music and many guest speakers, will be held Sunday, January 17th from 10am to 1pm PT.

The official home of the American Cancer Society in Second Life. Since 2005, cancer patients, caregivers, and volunteers have been able to receive services and support from the ACS in SL without having to leave the virtual world.

One of my most favorite part of my job description is updating the Second Life Destination Guide. I discover beautiful new locations to explore, all created by you, the Residents! We know how beloved it is to our Residents as well, that’s why we wanted you to be aware of a temporary freeze on new additions to the Destination Guide over the next few days and possibly until early in January.

Why? As part of our overall migration to the cloud, some of our web publishing tools (including what we use internally to update the Destination Guide) may be unavailable for our internal editorial team. 

The good news is that the web version of the Destination Guide will still be accessible to everyone, and so will the Destinations floater that you can find on the toolbar in your Second Life viewer.

We just won’t be able to add, update, or delete any entries during the uplift process. If you want to submit or update an entry, please email the information to editor@lindenlab.com and we will get that done as soon as we have access to the tool again.

It’s hard to believe that Second Life’s 19th birthday is around the corner. Over the years, I have continued to enjoy discovering new and interesting places to explore across the grid. However, I also appreciate looking back at some of the OG destinations that have left a lasting impression. Their longevity is a testament to the value of creation in SL, and you should absolutely check them out!

Using the Second Life Origins category on the Destination Guide, revisit some of the earliest and historically significant locations and landmarks in Second Life. Here are just some of my favorites.

SS Galaxy

Established in 2007, SS Galaxy, also known as the Queen of the Sagittarian Sea, is an enormous, full-featured cruise ship that spans three regions and offers an array of activities, just like a real world cruise!

The Man

"The Man" statue is one of the only surviving objects from the original "Linden Town" area that was developed in Second Life during the earliest Alpha stage of its development. At times, The Man has served as a shrine where miscellaneous offerings were left, and a celebration of the creativity SL was founded upon.

Climbable Beanstalk

One of the oldest objects in SL is a beanstalk, created by Steller Sunshine in 2003. An influential model of organic shapes in a whimsical style, Steller used to hold contests challenging Residents to jump from leaf to leaf — can you make it to the top?

Da Boom

Visit Da Boom, the very first region in Second Life, founded in 2002. It's named after the real-life "De Boom" street in San Francisco, and Residents have speculated it's also a reference to the "Big Bang" of our virtual world's conception.

Svarga

Climb on top of a giant wasp and take a guided tour of this tropical island, which first opened in 2006. Explore the library inside the central tower, relax near the spring fountain, or start an impromptu jam session with some peculiar elven instruments inside the playhouse.

Lost Gardens of Apollo

Established in 2005, the Lost Gardens of Apollo is a relaxing and romantic spot with beautiful gardens, waterfalls, and secluded places to snuggle.

Japan Tempura Island

Established in 2008, Tempura Island has been a popular destination for socializing, romance, and healing. Explore the forest, dance in the ballroom, wander through the temple and meditate amidst the Japanese motif.

The Far Away

A blast from the past! Featured in The New York Times! The Far Away is an interactive 3D art installation in Second Life. First built in 2007 by AM Radio, now curated by Ziki Questi and Kinnaird Resident.

Pooley Foot

Once a remote site where applicants for the first Linden Liaison team were interviewed, curious events caused the island to transform into a rather big foot. This isn't the only cultural spot in the area: head north to see what an early Orientation Island looked like, and eastward are stages that were used for early town hall chats.

This beautiful winter wonderland has picturesque scenery and winter activities such as ice skating, sledding, snowmobile racing, dancing, skiing with a ski lift snow fort battle, and bumper tubing. It's a beautiful place to get in the holiday mood!

Ville de Coeur in Winter

Six of the eight regions of Ville de Coeur are now covered in ice and snow for the winter. Skate non-stop through four of those regions, the other two being separated only by canal locks. Free ice skates are available in several regions, as well as skis and sleds. Alternatively, use the trolley or walking tour to get around. There are even horse-drawn sleighs.

Tiptoes Santa's Winter Experience

Bundle up the little ones before you take a family-friendly trip full of winter activities like sledding, ice skating, and a holiday-themed snow maze. Be sure to also make a stop at Santa's where you will find an advent calendar by Tiptoes for Toddleedoo/Bebe avatars with a new gift daily, as well as Santa's mailbox where you can drop off a letter and await his response!

The Winter market and treasure hunt event, invites you to explore a medieval winter town, ride the horse sleigh, and take your favorite winter pictures in a lovingly designed winter landscape. The event runs from 6th December to 6th January.

This will be the final Destination Guide highlights post for this year. I hope to continue them in the new year, with weekly updates on what's new on the Second Life Destination Guide. In the year 2022, we hope to give the Destination Guide a much-needed facelift and possibly a few other changes, which I am really looking forward to!

Winter has arrived at the Bellisseria Fairgrounds! Snowhaven returns to welcome the Second Life community to a rustic winter retreat until December 29th. Walk across the bridge to explore the trails and find hidden areas. Enjoy winter activities using the provided equipment or bring your own. The large red ornaments are teleporters. Beautiful vistas await the visitor at every turn and include spots that are ideal for quiet moments as well as more community fun-oriented spots. Stay on the train a little longer and you will arrive at the wonderful dance pavilion and seating area. From here, catch the train and head on back to the station. Explore and enjoy the sights of this newly created region for Christmas 2020 while it's still there. On Lab Gab today, Tara Linden and I went to several different winter destinations using the Destination Guide. I thought in today's blog post I would share all the destinations we went to. You can watch today's episode of Lab Gab on YouTube.

We started the show at the 2021 Shop & Hop showing off some of the goodies we picked up there. Then we headed over to the Swaginator Hunt, completed the hunt, and walked around with our Linden Bear winnings. After that, we went to Winter Wonderland and showed how to use the snow pistols so you will be all set for the Linden & Resident Snowball fight next week. The 7th Guest: A Second Life Experience showcases an immersive, encore performance by George Sanger, AKA The Fat Man, of the wickedly entertaining music he created for The 7th Guest in this out-of-the-real-world venue. George Sanger is an American musician who has composed music for computer and video games, beginning in 1983. He is scheduled to perform on this Sunday Nov. 22th at 2pm PT at OD Designs' Sky Porch in Second Life.

FOCUS

FOCUS at Coppelia is a collaboration led by renowned architect David Denton (DB Bailey) with fellow SL artists Bob Johnson (Thoth Jantzen) and Jane Leffler (Jo Ellsmere). DB’s ethereal abstract architectural style is blended with a variety of multimedia and artistic techniques and other content to create a unique and powerfully immersive experience. FOCUS is composed of a variety of different spaces that blend seamlessly together, each providing its own special mood and feeling when one enters. Coppelia is a Second Life simulator operated by the eponymous artists’ collective, “CoppeliaSL." The region provides studio and exhibition space for a group of artists that currently includes: Jo Ellsmere, Glyph Graves, Penumbra Carter, Dekka Raymaker, Ultraviolet Alter, DB Bailey, and Cuirec d’Erc.

Simon's Town Art Gallery at Boulder

Simon's Town Art Gallery at Boulder hosts exhibits on a quarterly basis from participating visual artists. The gallery's primary exhibits are photographic. All are welcome and it is free to visit. Beginning November 8th Ms. Hillany Scofield, is presenting an exhibit entitled 'Fields of Love'. The exhibit will run through February 1, 2021. There is no fee to visit the gallery. Open to all.
