  1. It's only the over bright face lights that stand out. Lots of people still wear face lights - so much so that I've taken to wearing one sometimes!
  2. I agree. Given that SL has survived 17 years of predictions of its downfall, I see no reason to believe it will happen any time soon. This thread is about a hypothetical situation but it's still quite interesting to discuss. Not VERY interesting though - only quite interesting!!!
  3. I can't see any evidence that Second Life is likely to shut down permanently in the foreseeable future but just suppose that did happen, it could be for several reasons. 1) SL ceases to be profitable for the owners of Linden Lab. 2) SL becomes illegal under some kind of new censorship laws introduced in the USA in particular. 3) Technical Armageddon hits the SL servers or the 'cloud', wiping out any meaningful virtual world. If any of these things happen, then we'd probably lose everything and that would be that. I suppose in the case of the first two scenarios, LL could decide to make everything open source during its remaining days. If they made everything full perms we could grab what we can and attempt to transfer it to OpenSim or wherever!
  4. The system avatar works OK for a slim, average female shape like mine. If I ever decide to put on a lot of weight or morph into a mega-muscular male, then I'd probably go mesh because system avatars don't so cope well with supersizing!
  5. The water has a 'fog' to it, which is adjustable for density and colour. If you make a new water setting you can adjust its "Density Exponent" to zero and set the colour to white, then save the setting. You can apply that setting to your parcel of land or to yourself and you can give copies to friends. The water is still there but it appears completely clear.
  6. I've had something similar happen occasionally. There's a kind of default log-in screen that sometimes appears with a picture of a temple or lighthouse or something. If I get that I don't try to log in but wait a while and things are usually back to normal. Logging in the the default screen used to reset most of my settings to default so I avoided using it as much as possible.
  7. As I said in an earlier post, my avatar is still 'system'. I put together a montage from a recent photoshoot. The pictures are mildly processed. The jeans, the black leggings and the blue and purple leotard are also 'system', whereas the tops, shorts, shoes and hairstyles are mesh. The leotard dates back a long, long way ! And these evening sunlight images are from our OpenSim standalone island . . .
  8. I'm in Britain and I've had trouble logging in to SL and also to this website. I managed to get in-world only one time out of many attempts. I use the LL standard viewer. For comparison I tried logging in to OpenSim Grid with Firestorm and I managed to get in several times, although that was more difficult than normal too and failed several times. So I reckon in must be some sort of internet problem.
  9. I agree. People can look how they like in Second Life. We never really know whether someone's avatar looks odd intentionally or because the real life person behind it has no sense of scale or proportion! And they've also spent so much time in SL that they've forgotten what a real woman or man look like! In real life, dragons don't exist, so how come some dragons in SL are more realistic than others? 🤪
  10. I'm coming up to 14 years in SL and I still use a system avatar, although I have mostly mesh clothing and mesh hair. I've only been challenged once about my non-mesh appearance, by a lady with a full mesh avatar decked out in perfectly fitting mesh clothing and accessories. While she probably thought of herself as a SLupermodel, her shape actually looked ridiculous - huge hips, tiny waist, narrow shoulders and short arms with tiny hands - a combination you never see in RL! Me being me, I didn't retaliate, but I knew exactly what I would have said if I'd done so! A well proportioned system avatar with a realistic skin still looks better than a badly proportioned mesh one with a poorly detailed skin. As I often say on here, what would be really good would be if LL could update the system avatar with minor tweaks to overcome the known problem areas and also to add some more sliders to further increase customisation. For example it would be good if we could adjust an avatar's basic permanent stance that would affect all animations. Things like toes in or toes out, stand up straight or stoop, or arms out a bit (for fat avatars).
  11. I made a day cycle (24 hours) that corresponds roughly to a fine summer day in Britain. I have applied it to our land. If I Tp to other places I sometimes apply it to myself or maybe one of my individual time of day settings from it. I've also made some 'club interior settings' so if I'm at an indoor club I choose one of those.
  12. I always assumed the Shelter was owned by Linden Lab. You learn something every day! Anyway, sad to hear it's closing. Maybe LL could make the preserved Shelter into an open-stage location.
  13. I generally use the LL standard viewer for SL and I use Firestorm for OpenSim because it's not possible to use the LL viewer for that. I occasionally use Firestorm for logging in to SL if the LL viewer is going through a bad patch. I can't say that Firestorm is any better or worse than the LL one. It has a few extra functions, which I don't use anyway. And I if I'm an un-rezzed cloud, I slightly prefer being a white cloud to being a red cloud !
  14. I'm lucky enough to have a good computer and internet connection so SL normally works smoothly for me even with advanced graphics. The exception to this is in busy places, where there's still lots of lag and avatars take ages to rez. Linked to what I said earlier about LL upgrading the system avatar and providing free full-perms and graphics-optimised clothing, if LL upped their game with 'official' fully customisable content, that would, over time, improve performance at busy places., which in turn would make the experience more appealing to users. In particular it could mean retaining those wavering over giving up on SL and also newbies whose first-day experiences of dismembered body sections and giant flying dentures means they don't bother with a second day. I reflect on my first day in SL, almost 14 years ago now, when I nearly gave up after an hour or so because so many things were default grey and movement was so jerky. I'm so thankful I carried on, though.
  15. My SL wishlist would be along somewhat similar lines. Except that I'd favour an update of the classic 'system' avatar mesh to remove the glitches and give smoother joint articulation - but still compatible with the current texture templates. Also there could be additional slider options such as thigh length (independent of leg length), arm angle - so that fat avatars could keep their arms outside their body and an adjustable basic stance (such as straight back or stoop) that still works when you use an animation or AO. Also a set of full-perms mesh clothes in the starter library section, with properly made alpha layers would be good. A few more prim shapes would be good and even more useful would be some extra tools. For example if you could draw a shape and then extrude it that would be really useful. So would being able to slice through a prim at an angle. Then there could also be a function for converting your prim creation, complete with all its textures, into an optimised mesh object that looks exactly the same. Maybe LL could make small charge for each 'mesh conversion'.
  16. Let's change the subject to 'something'.
  17. I made my own skin and hairbase and after modifying the hairbase slightly I noticed I those lines appeared on my neck. I was able to amend my hairbase and the lines disappeared. So I agree, the hairbase is where the problem lies.
  18. I've had dreams about being in SL- like environments but that's about all. Strangely, I can remember having occasional dreams about being able to fly, long before SL existed. That's not unusual, lots of people dream they can fly. Indeed dreams could have been the inspiration for giving avatars the ability to fly in SL. What is uncanny though is that in my pre-SL flying dreams, I do remember that I was in a pose similar to the SL one, with arms outstretched like wings, just gliding effortlessly.
  19. How would we know that people weren't putting lots of alts up for election?
  20. Thanks for the help. I tried redelivering and I was able to texture the replacement 😊
  21. Today I had a mysterious change of permissions on an item I bought on Marketplace from a reputable creator. I don't think it's their fault, but rather a glitch that happened when SL crashed. So . . .I bought a full-perms top on MP and made my own texture for it. All was well, the top fitted nicely (the smallest version from the pack). I went to a club and after a while there was a restart and I crashed out. When I relogged at home, I still had the top on but it was now plain white. I tried to reapply the texture I'd made but the top had lost all permissions so I couldn't do anything with it. I tried on the next size up and that was still full-perms and accepted the texture - but the smaller one was a better fit so I'd like to recover that if possible. I didn't change the perms myself, and even if I had, as owner I'd still be able to texture it. I cleared cache and even turned the computer off and on again. Now, several hours later, the top is still not allowing me to texture it. Has anyone else had this happen and if so have they been able to remedy the problem? I'm pretty sure it was to do with the region restart.
  22. I use the standard SL viewer for Second Life but I use Firestorm for my Open Sim standalone and for OS Grid. My avatar is the same in Open Sim as it is SL, by means of copying all my SL slider settings to OS. I also use the same skins on both, which I made myself. I would say my appearance is very similar in SL and OS, yet the OS height reading is considerably more. I assumed that was something to do with Open Sim, but now I'm wondering if it's to do with Firestorm. It's not a problem for me as I still appear to be in scale with my surroundings, just that there's a different value in the height readings!
  23. I'm hoping to make some new fabric textures for my favourite full-perm summer dress.
