  1. Nah. There was nothing wrong with art in the first place. Plus all art is subjective. As far as people comparing AI art to blood diamonds...really? AI art isn't killing children so no. Don't be ridiculous. It may at some point make amazing art but then so did Da Vinci and nobody stopped making art just because he was one of the best at it. Just because William Shakespeare came along and changed the face of literature it didn't cause people to stop writing. Even if AI gets to the point where it can compete with humans so what? It's not like there won't be people who prefer to deal with humans-only (a bit discriminatory if you ask me) plus you'll always have people who have their own unique style. Maybe a robot can duplicate someone's style but as people change their style changes. There's just so many variables and not even a computer can account for all of them. I think people getting frightened of it or calling it unethical are being narrow-minded. All artists borrow from their inspirations and influences (some more so than others). I don't see how AI scanning millions of paintings and coming up with its own based on all that input is any different from an artist mimicking people they're influenced by until they develop their own style. AI is the future. Either we can accept it and learn to live alongside it or we can bury our heads in the sand and pretend like progress isn't something that's going to happen whether we like it or not.
  2. In the future it's probably a good idea to let your housemates know you're wanting to discuss something with your landlady before you do so. Such interactions can be pretty stressful, and I know if my roommate went and talked to the landlord without telling me then went and included me in the conversation without talking with me about it ahead of time I'd be a bit upset, too. Remember-the landlady isn't your friend. You and your housemates have to be a united front as landlords who decide they dislike you living there for whatever reason can make all your lives miserable.
  3. My main pet peeve is people who get into making mesh purely for the sake of profit who put in the bare minimum of effort to learn it and then stop before learning things like how to optimize their products. There's a lot of bad mesh out there selling for way too much money and it's making SL a slog. Another pet peeve is people who make decent-looking vehicles who then use blurry textures for things like headlights and logos. Those are only some of the main things people look at. If you're going to mimic something from real life don't go spoiling the illusion with half-assed texture work. Especially if you're going to overcharge for something you barely put effort into.
  4. There's no such thing as free speech in Second Life or even in real life. Freedom of speech applies only to a US citizens right to protest their government. "Free speech is not absolute – US law does recognize a number of important restrictions to free speech. These include obscenity, fraud, child pornography, harassment, incitement to illegal conduct and imminent lawless action, true threats, and commercial speech such as advertising, copyright or patent rights." https://theconversation.com/the-idolization-of-free-speech-in-the-united-states-155778#:~:text=Free speech is not absolute,advertising%2C copyright or patent rights. That aside it's important to remember that if you're starting or joining in arguments in a help group (or just being disrespectful or acting rude and/or entitled) you're gonna have a bad time. If your business means that much to you then you should endeavor to treat people in a respectful manner and not act like just because you run a business people are supposed to wait on you hand and foot. You're no more or less special than the next person needing assistance. You should feel grateful the bans aren't carrying over and do your best to take it for what it is-a second chance.
  5. Short-term? It doesn't. Business goes on as usual. In the long-term there are any number of things that could happen. None of which are really worth us average shoppers worrying about for now. The people who have the most to lose from this in the long-term are vendors who might see any number of negative outcomes due to this sale. The best thing we consumers can do is continue supporting individuals and businesses we feel deserve our money and hope for the best (while trying not to stress too much about potential worst case scenarios). It's sort of like Amazon buying smaller companies. For the majority of consumers even if one or two multi-billion-dollar deals go south the most you see is fees go up a few dollars here and there. Things start affecting us when issues become cumulative. If LL were to make a number of bad deals in rapid succession we might have to worry but Casper's done a pretty good job of running things so unless LL royally ***** things up and fubar their handling of things (which I really doubt they will) this deal should work out the way they're intending it to meaning it will help provide both vendors and consumers with a more secure retail environment.
  6. Forgive me if this has been brought up before but I was driving along Rt. 2 and noticed that in some areas the old stone road had been replaced by a newer one. While I appreciate the effort that went into replacing the old roadway I can't help wishing all that had been done was the old road updated with a better version of the old texture. The old stone, dirt, & grass look fit in a lot better with the surrounding environment and gave it a lot of charm. These new roads while pretty stick out like a sore thumb. Plus there are a few areas where either the ground is sticking through and/or there's unnecessary roadway to the side of it. The new road looks more like something from a Disney theme-park and the lights being right in the middle of the road make it difficult for either multiple vehicles to travel side-by-side or for larger vehicles to navigate it without slamming into one every few meters. Edit: As you can see from the second picture the old road fits the environment a lot better plus it's not even that bad looking even today. All the moles would need to do is recreate the old texture so it looks a bit better.
  7. I'm going to assume that once due diligence has been done and people notified regarding the change in ownership and potential transfer of their data, those who grant their approval will continue doing business as usual. LL has a number of folks working for them who get paid to know how to manage customer service, server maintenance, etc. I don't see why ownership would need to be transferred between individual vendor owners as you down 'own' your vendor in the first place. You own a license to use said vendor. One that can be revoked should they feel you've done something to violate whatever TOS you agreed to when you began using the service. The in-world part of CasperVend never belonged to Linden Lab. It was always property of its creator. It's the same as creating anything in SL-you own it outright. You're free to sell your business as long as its done in such a way that it doesn't violate the TOS and whatever applicable laws may apply. That usually means asking LL first, as someone else helpfully pointed out. As far as them creating their own vendor system why should they do that when they can just buy one already set up and proven a viable means of managing transactions? They're saving a boatload more money doing it this way rather than putting tons of time, effort, and money into developing a competing system that may or may not prove popular.
  8. ...Of course given the fact LL is owned by an investment firm they could just be sprucing up the Christmas goose in order to increase it's value in case their owners decide they're better off dumping it. What can I say? I'm a glass is half-full and half-empty kind of roo.
  9. If people read through all seven pages they'd see that Patch has been pretty forthcoming with information. CasperVend was not in trouble. Linden Lab is just doing a bit of forward-thinking and looking after their best interest by making sure a valuable monetary stream is in less danger of interruption. On top of that this makes it even easier to keep track of the health of the economy. As of this point they're not planning on making any changes. However, that's mostly because they're not sure what if anything they want to change at this point. For now the general impression is that they're going to focus on transitioning things over and any possible maintenance needed so as to keep things running smoothly. There are NO plans as of yet to charge any kind of subscription or anything like that, and other third party vendors are more than welcome to do business in SL (as long as they abide by the TOS). Did I miss anything? Speaking for myself I'm choosing to hope for the best and see Linden Lab investing money in SL as a good sign they still deem it worth investing in. Maybe this will lead to something bad at some later date, who knows? I don't see the sense in hand-wringing over it. Especially since they only just announced it.
  10. I remember coming across one place that had this huge black sphere jutting out from their land above the highway. Turns out they'd put a huge beach house up there and don't seem to care that it's not only a huge eyesore it's over land they don't own.
  11. I was flying along the coastline over in east Satori and couldn't help noticing there are a LOT of places out on the water that do this. I believe this is what's known as a 'dick move'. I actually came to the forum to post that maybe there should be an area of water all along the coastline of every continent in SL so people can sail around SL without having to deal with ugly crap like this. I mean come on. That looks atrocious. I'd feel embarrassed to pay the kind of money people are paying for places like this just to ugly it all up and make it impossible for people to get by. Along with all that garbage there were group access only ban lines on either side of me. Who'd want to be in the group responsible for that mess?
  12. While I'm really glad some progress is being made I find it disheartening how many people are willing to see legacy content disappear in favor of shiny new graphics. Just because something looks pretty doesn't make it good. I'm all for improving performance but there are still quite a lot of people out there who are running older systems. Especially given the fact a lot of SL's userbase has been hit hard by Covid, economic downturns, war, and people hogging all the available cheap video cards. By all means ask about improvements but if it ends up being something only the wealthy percentage of its community can play it's going to go against the spirit of accessibility that built the grid in the first place. As it is mesh has caused a not insignificant number of would-be creators to feel the learning curve has turned into a closed and locked gate.
  13. Tudor villages were fairly simple in layout. Here's a pretty great overview of what they'd look like https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Exeter,_1563.jpg If you have a small area to work with I suggest going with a small inn, a small church, a few connected houses, and a market. Villages were focused around trade so you'd have at least a shop or two and smithy. It's your standard tabletop and/or video game rpg town. I would look for buildings that are simple fronts with no interiors save for maybe the church and inn. The majority of social interaction had to do with peoples business, leisure, and faith. I'd honestly suggest this megapack as it comes with pretty much everything you'd need to make your own village. https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Medieval-MEGA-Package/585007
  14. Just because someone's avatar looks under 18 doesn't mean it's for sketchy reasons. I'm friends with a few folks who have teen/child avatars & they wear them because either it's fun, it helps them with their anxiety/mental health, or both. It's kind of unfair to automatically make negative assumptions about people who wear them.
  15. Basically I need a decent jean jacket that looks close to what his looks like & has a back patch texture I can mod. It would be great if it came with a leather jacket interior or was roomy enough inside I could wear a thin mesh leather jacket under it without it clipping. At the moment I'm planning on using a smaller-sized avatar for it but I'm willing to adapt. I already have the Hellfire club shirt.
  16. Protest by Ella Wheeler Wilcox To sin by silence, when we should protest, Makes cowards out of men. The human race Has climbed on protest. Had no voice been raised Against injustice, ignorance, and lust, The inquisition yet would serve the law, And guillotines decide our least disputes. The few who dare, must speak and speak again To right the wrongs of many. Speech, thank God, No vested power in this great day and land Can gag or throttle. Press and voice may cry Loud disapproval of existing ills; May criticise oppression and condemn The lawlessness of wealth-protecting laws That let the children and childbearers toil To purchase ease for idle millionaires. Therefore I do protest against the boast Of independence in this mighty land. Call no chain strong, which holds one rusted link. Call no land free, that holds one fettered slave. Until the manacled slim wrists of babes Are loosed to toss in childish sport and glee, Until the mother bears no burden, save The precious one beneath her heart, until God’s soil is rescued from the clutch of greed And given back to labor, let no man Call this the land of freedom.
  17. I decided to wear my old-school Extrovirtual roo (the roo in blue) while doing the shop & hop & wore my current modded KZK squirrel roo to get a cute screenshot over in Newchurch's vendor area. I'd normally spend a bit of time in Clip Studio to get rid of clipping/weird areas but was feeling lazy.
  18. My inner Rainbow Dash gives two wings up and a nosebleed in approval.
  19. I hope the dragon at Cape Ekim isn't going away. The mole who worked on that did such a wonderful job on it. There's a lot of great lore there and it's really worth checking out. It would be nice if it were set aside as a historical build. All the old mole-created places should be. I also think it would be nice if people who have an old Linden home could be allowed to keep it. I would hope LL would understand that some people might have an emotional connection to the place they've lived in for a long time & won't make them get rid of it. That would suck.
  20. It may be something as simple as the underscore between 'girl' and 'red'. It might confuse their algorithm into thinking it's something else. Like Mushroom said go through all the words in your listing and make sure there isn't anything like slang or references to trademarked brands, etc.
  21. If Linden Lab put serious effort into eliminating copyright infringement not only would they go broke paying people overtime to chase it all down SL's economy would collapse. SL was built on copyright infringement. Not trying to stick up for it. It's just the truth. I can still go out and find vendors selling band T-shirts you know music labels never approved. Same with a ton of different clothing styles people pass off as their own designs. Club decor, furniture, fake food products based on popular brands-even when they're thinly-veiled parodies of existing products there's still a lot more products that are someone passing something off as their own work that isn't. The biggest example of this are all the items like in the example provided where it's obvious they were ripped from a game. You could report it...but honestly I'd stick to worrying more about keeping an eye out for individual creators and letting the big brands like Disney & Marvel look after themselves. Again-not defending copyright infringement. It's just why defend corporations that actively work against independent creators via unreasonable copyright extension and oppressive litigation? Why go to bat to companies that align themselves with anti-LGBT legislation? If you're going to narc on infringers at least do it for small-time folks who are actually hurt by things like infringement and copybotting and let Disney do their own legwork. All you're doing is making it so they have less reason to pay the people they hire to track down this stuff a reasonable wage.
  22. I think this ZZ Top video is more appropriate to this discussion. Fun fact-someone made the legs from this video an avatar. I got the notion to do a search for it on the marketplace and sure enough it was there. SL is wild.
  23. Honestly while it's not a terrible joke it is the kind of thing that can make people feel awkward if they've only just met you. While a potato avatar isn't the weirdest thing one might see in SL most people (in general) are put off when someone is wearing a strange avatar and making weird jokes about cannibalism. I wouldn't take it personally. You just kind of have to expect that if you're being really strange not everyone is going to groove to it. Speaking as someone who often wears silly avatars and makes silly jokes (and writes silly poems on the spot, sometimes) as long as you're not being an ***** or saying creepy/sexual things in order to make people uncomfortable on purpose you're fine. Keep on doing that thing you do and you'll eventually find people who you'll fit in with. Personally about the only thing that keeps me from talking to other's on voice is when they're ignoring people in chat. As long as you're doing your best to be kind and not ignoring people you're golden (fried).
  24. I love when people buy land next to one of SL's highways then build a moon with a beach house in it that takes up their land, the road below it, and most of the property on the other side. Since the middle of their house is above a public road that means I can wander around in it all I want, right?
