I am in the habit of not responding at all to messages that are just "Hi". They tend to be indicative of the level of effort that person is going to put into the conversation. Offline messages that just say "Hi" also really annoy me but I have to respond in case it is a customer. The other thing I tend to not to respond to is copy / paste roleplay IMs. You know, that wall of text that you just know has been pasted into the IM box of every woman in the venue. But if I am feeling cheeky, I will reply with a friendly Aussie greeting, "G'day mate, how's it going?". They usually will not respond, it's a great response to use whenever some guy is hitting on you, it completely disarms them. I always look at the profile. How I reply -- IF I reply -- depends mostly on what the IM says. If it is just a random "Hi" and nothing else, I ignore it. It it is an obvious pickup, I ignore it. I should add though that I have Firestorm configured to respond to all IMs letting folks know that I might be AFK or focused on something such that I might not notice the IM right away. ETA that I must beg to contradict you. Subtlety is not quite right. I think the word I would choose is finesse. At first I thought this was a poem! If someone IMs you in SL Do you reply, and cam as well? Do you read their profile first Do you answer them in verse? Anyway to answer the question - I message them back in similar tone to how they message me. If they say Hi, I say Yo. If they say Nice avatar, I say Thanks, I'd say the same but I dunno where you are! (unless they are right in front of me). I don't cam around.
