  1. The link to the following page, and the materiel thereon, makes it clear that SL still has an API for registering new users with last names. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Registration_API Agreed. Its more work than I wish to do to re-listen to the various hour-long interviews to post time-tags. Essentially, all their technical work to allow name-changes involves finding all the places in all the various servers and databases that index on legacy name instead of UUID, and changing them to index on UUID. None of that is an issue when creating a new account.
  2. IM me and I'll tell you the training web site I use. I don't know if I should mention them here. There are probably several good ones. I just know the one I use has been good for me.
  3. Yeah, you have to set an notification on your smartphone calendar to remind you to downgrade a few days before.
  4. That's a good argument. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Custom_Name_Program
  5. Why not just re-enable last names for new Avatar Accounts? There is no technical work to be done. Everything still works. If you doubt me, note that last names remain available for new accounts if you pay enough money. See: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Custom_Name_Program As for the oft-stated concern that confusion about last names leads to fall-out in the signup process, that's just a matter of web page design. Make the current one-name procedure the default, and make last name selection require someone to follow a tiny footnote link. That would have solved the problem back in 2010 if it really was a problem. I think it was just regulars checking out the then-current last-names list. Remember that when SL shut down new last-names in major markets, that people were VPN'ing into smaller markets to get last names. Current users looking for two-name alts will be in the know soon enough. Word will spread virally. How do you think people find out about Firestorm, for example? There would be a rush of new avatar creation. Lots of sales of mesh bodies, mesh heads, mesh clothing.
  6. Sounds like your network bandwidth setting regressed to the 500 kbps default. Slide it back up to 1500 kbps.
  7. One word: Blender. Most things in SL these days are made in Blender. Some in Maya. I've tried Maya, but am back to Blender.
  8. Well, I have a few premium accounts, because its the cheapest way to cover my land tier. My friends tell me that they avoid premium because your account gets locked in the auto-renewal fails. I prepaid for an extra year before the prices went up. I'm taking a wait and see attitude.
  9. I doubt there is anyone there, except the owner's alts.
  10. My communication in SL orbits these days is pretty much all Discord all the time. I can type sometimes, at least a little. If I have to; I guess.
  11. Just use a VPN to get a new IP when your Alt cashes in.
  12. Attach the scripted object as a HUD, rather than to your avatar's body. That should fix it
  13. But wouldn't giving us gridwide experience s let us pass semaphores via the experience data? I'm working on a project now that would be so much better if I could count on using my experience, but I was not in the beta and so mine is not gridwide.
  14. The Lindens don't really know the SL culture anymore. Linden inworld interaction was dying after Philip left the first time, and the layoffs of 2010 reduced staff such that they just couldn't anymore. Torley was the last to have a bit of tie to the old world, and now he's off doing something else. If you are part of beta testing one of the new features, you meet developers, but they don't play in the world. Recently they hired Strawberry, and so they have at least one person that knows something if the game. I know people that were married inworld by Lindens. I used to use a HUD that would find an online Linden if you had a griefer. Lindens used to play the combat game over on region Jessie. Today, to use an analogy, we are golfers and the Lindens are the ones who tend the grass on the fairways and greens, and sell tickets. They don't however play golf anymore. Discussing golf with them would not be a conversation among players.
  15. I come here to create stuff. Its a hobby, like gardening. You have to deal with people behaving badly shielded by their anonymity, but there are good people here too. Banning troublemakers isn't terribly helpful though. Its too quick and cheap to make an alt, and most troublemakers have years worth of avatars out there ageing. Apparently, griefing is a hobby for some.
  16. The BOM stuff I'm seeing looks flat, apparently because I've become used to having Advanced Lighting Model material (normal and specular) layers on clothes on the onion skin layers of mesh avatars. Sansar auto-calculates a material system, but allows the creator to over-ride it. We need something like that for BOM. Perhaps I'm missing something, but it seems to me that Bakes on Mesh is baking only one third of what needs to be baked (meaning only the diffuse texture, but not the normal and specular textures). The only reason I can see for the manual three-texture upload process in Second Life (vs. Sansar), is that uploading three textures triples the upload revenue. We all apply the Photoshop Filters twice (once for Normal, once for Specular), and upload two extra textures. Frankly, I'd rather just pay the L$30 have have the servers do it for me. Its mindless repetitive work better done by a computer than a human. The problem with BOM, is now you can't even do that! This BOM stuff is a big step backwards.

  18. What I do is shrink and expand (for the different modes) the hud, apply a new texture, and redefine the interpretation of the UV coordinates. UV coordinates: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LlDetectedTouchUV For shrink/expand and retexture, I use one of the varieties of llSetLinkPrimitiveParamsFast() and do it all in one shot. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LlSetPrimitiveParams#llSetLinkPrimitiveParamsFast
  19. Mine is worse, and uglier, but does read landmark for its input. Also, I have a more complete reporting of errors that you can copy if you like. I give the system error first, and then give additional details from the wiki. I'd like someone to expand mine to read multiple landmarks and present a menu. I know how, because I have used @Rolig Loon 's fine simple multi-page menu code before on another project. Right now, I have too many vehicles projects going that keep me busy.
  20. @Wulfie Reanimator, Nice work. My wish list. 1. Make it so that the NoteCard (NC) goes in a non-deeded prim, transmitting updates to the Radio (deeded prim). 2. Add a NC setting letting us tell the Radio what hour to reset to Channel 1. I use an @Alicia Stella script that I modified to reset to Channel 1 every day at 6 a.m. SLT, but I did it in the LSL code, not the NC. Her script is sold in her store full perms, but I don't have the right to post it here. I too have land you can use, if you need more, I'll send you the group and LM.
  21. You can also see in the Edit floater in the Objects tab.
