BONUS QUESTION! Speaking of science, have you seen any real-world science phenomena reproduced in Second Life?

 

I think I've been to regions dedicated to science education, and I think I've seen demonstrations of physics in those areas. But nothing like real Chemistry or Biology.

I'm sorry that you missed the educational display on chemical thermodynamics that I set up for the Community Virtual Library several years ago. I was unapologetically proud of the way it turned out and a little sorry that more people didn't wander through it. You're right that there have been more demonstrations of physics (usually actually of technology) than of chemistry, but I've enjoyed several nice biological ones over the years.  People seem to like plants and animals.

Gravity. I am doing tests...very important test almost daily, my neighbors might call it "oh well there she goes again falling off of her platform like a potato" but believe me it's serious science stuff.

Linden Research Incorparated was founded by Philip Rosedale in 1999 to research and develop electronic haptics (touch and feel) technologies.

Haptics are devices worn on the body, or held in the hand which are similar to the vibrating "rumble" motors, or pressure-sensitive control buttons and trigger mechanisms found inside video games console control pads.

Linden Research's small team initially operated from a building at 333 Linden Street in San Francisco, which influenced the "Linden Research" name. The Linden Research team nicknamed themselves the "Linden Lab", with individuals known as "Lindens".

As well as developing haptics, Linden Research also developed a 3D virtual environment called "Linden World" to test their haptics in.  After seeing the potential of the 3D world, new investors changed the company's research direction, prioritising the development of the 3D "Linden World" environment into an online virtual world business and haptics research was shelved.  The "Linden World" 3D environment also had a name change to "Second Life".

"Linden Labs" is just an informal in-house nickname, the company has always officially been called Linden Research Inc.

The Linden Research company logo is based on a lime tree. Why? Because lime trees are known as linden trees.

Another name for a lime tree is Tilia!

It's Moppy muppet...very serious person this Moppy. She's the headscientist in our daughters room errr Lab here in Japan. And I don't know... if magical girls are not science than what else is? Defying gravity is part of being a magical girl...still working on that part obviously XD

Fun fact: The creator of "The Muppet Show" and "Sesame Street", Jim Henson, created the name "muppet" in 1958 as a combination of the words marionette and puppet.

In the United Kingdom, the name "muppet" over several decades has become a light-hearted British term for someone who is easily controlled, easily persuaded, obedient and subservient - like a puppet or marionette.  This in turn has led "Muppet" to further evolve into an insult for someone who is gullible, foolish or a brainless idiot.  

"You're a muppet", "You muppet", "They're muppets", "You're all muppets", "That muppet over there"😜

I don’t know how biology experiments can be successfully simulated in SL as they tend to be at microscopic level. I am sure someone skilled and with a lot of patience can come up with a SL model of animal and plant DNA. You could highlight the difference in the sequence of bases and stuff like that 😅Also some disease processes could be simulated.

So far though I have only seen simulated reproduction between humans, animals and genetically modified hybrids 😆

This is what I have been rabbiting on about, (beg pardon muppets), for like many years now.
Valid educational content in SL.
Let the legless avatars tread Wirtual Vorlds as lightly as they wish.... 😆
SL should strive to stay #1 with verified, genuine scientific, mathematical, biological etc etc content
all verified by trustworthy experts of which many exist right here in Le Fora. (as an example).

Otherwise... we are destined to remain.....🤔 well, Muppets basically.

Years ago, at Ivory Tower sandbox, I watched a fella "silly walking" along a long pipe (painted with a corn-on-the-cob texture) while wearing a suit of spheres. He'd been inspired by Drew Barry's wonderful molecular machine animations. His display name was Dynein Motor and his doppleganger makes its entrance during the intro, and again at around 4:35 in this video...

Dynein's simulation was nothing like that video, but it was sufficient to put a huge smile on his face, and mine.

Ain't SL grand?

I don't remember where I saw it, but there was a lovely demonstration of Newton's Cannon in SL long ago. I'm probably misremembering it, but there was a big Earth sphere with a tiny cannon on the surface. You entered a muzzle velocity and fired it. If the velocity was too small, the cannonball would roll to a stop somewhere on the sphere. If the velocity was greater than "escape", the ball just shot off across the sim. If you got it just right, the ball would orbit.

As with so many other great things I've discovered in SL, Maya Angelou said it best...

People will forget what you said,
people will forget what you did,
but people will never forget how you made them feel.

That demonstration conveyed to me what I imagine was Newton's excitement over his flash of insight.
