Support the Japan Earthquake & Pacific Tsunami Relief with Linden Dollars

Our thoughts today are with all of those who are suffering in the devastation caused by the earthquakes in Japan and the tsunami in the Pacific. We encourage all Second Life Residents to support the relief efforts however they can, and we would like to help.

We have created two special Linden Bears--one that is wearable and one that sits--which are now for sale in the Marketplace at several pricing levels: L$300, L$1,000 and L$3,000. Here’s the direct link to purchase them. We will donate all proceeds from sales of this bear to the Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief efforts of the American Red Cross.

Please help us to support the relief efforts - buy the bears, and help spread the word in Second Life.

Additionally, we know that independent groups in Second Life are also planning to support relief efforts. For example, Radar Magazine in Second Life will be holding a month-long event and are seeking designers to donate virtual items (see this article for details). If your group is planning an inworld relief effort, then please share it in the comments here.

Thank you,

Kim

UPDATE -- April 14, 2011: Thank you to everyone who contributed to this campaign! In total, this doation drive raised more than L$8.3 million.

The special-edition Linden bears are no longer for sale, but you can of course contribute directly to the charity of your choice and participate in the numerous efforts to support Japan in Second Life organized by fellow Residents. (If your group is planning an inworld relief effort, then please do share it with us in the comments here.)

I'm sorry, but I must have missed the blog when the Linden's announced that Linden currency now has a real monetary value?

Yes I know it can be "cashed out" to real currency, however it seems strange they outright ask us to donate our LINDENS to the Japan relief efforts. Thank you, but no thanks. I have donated real currency, directly to the Red Cross.

Wonderful idea. I have already donated to the red cross in RL. I have no words for what is going on in Japan and my heart goes out to the Japanese and espcially those effected.

Can we read somewhere how much Linden Lab themselves from their own financial assets will donate in future to certain charities ?

Let us also stay critical. Be aware please that the Japanese government very clearly stated they don't want or need money. Japan is a highly developed country. Hands on help is highly needed. However the red cross is a voluntary organization depending on donations. However, please do realize that Japan has no need of money actually ;)

Sorry, my effort to say "thank you" in Japanese created a glitch in translation. I apologize. Arigato.

@Kim: would LL consider issuing a smaller-sized wearable bear? The current one is wonderful, but much too big to actually wear to meetings, dances, etc. Thanks!

I wish to send proceeds of my in-world store to this cause and was curious, is it okay to set my vendors to direct the proceeds directly to Donation Linden?

MORE INFO !!!  PLEASE NOTE

Many of the communities Time Warner Cable serves have customers worried about family, friends and colleagues in Japan.  As a result of the events that took place on March 11, 2011, we have seen an increase in the number of calls made by our customers to Japan.  All direct dial calls placed using our Digital Home Phone service to Japan will be free through April 15, 2011. This program includes both residential Digital Home Phone and Business Class Phone customers and will be retroactive for all calls starting on March 11, 2011.
Digital Home Phone Customers who are making calls to Japan during the eligible period do not need to make any changes to their accounts in order to take advantage of this program.  This program will cover any Time Warner Cable Digital Home Phone and Time Warner Cable Business Class Phone subscriber making a direct call to Japan. Calls to operators or directory assistance will continue to be charged at the usual rate.
We're here for you, so you can be there for them. For more information

While you are correct that the Japanese govt has no direct need of money, the organizations providing goods and relief do . The highest profile one is the Red Cross and contrary to anything you may have heard previous to this,  they are accounting for their use of funds. If you want to see such, simply request it or earmark your donations and request an itemized receipt if you give directly.  And , as for the comments about use of Lindens for currency - well that IS what we use in here and it IS our universal currency. What would be good is if at the time of need to convert and deliver to Red Cross, there is no charge for the exchange.  Please ,Linden Labs , consider this.

It's a great idea but a bad implementation of it. I tried to buy the bear when I heard about it but the order didn't go through. According to the email and order page, it didn't even get started. And I'm not the only one it happened to - there are several people in the MP comments saying exactly the same thing. No money was taken which, perhaps, is unfortunate since the bear itself is irrelevant.

THIS kind of compassion is what makes the world go 'round. My heart goes out to all those who are suffering in the aftermath of this overwhelming tragedy. I LOVE my bear and have it sitting outside my shop. I hope it entices more people to contribute. He has the happiest smile and the cutest face. Thank you SO much for the opportunity to help.

My club is doing a promotion while the bears are on sale that if guests buy bears for dancers, they're as good as getting tips. The girls were happy to here about this, while they don't get as much linden dollars, it's for a good cause.

Our thoughts and lindens go out to Japan. We were all waiting on pins and needles to here from friends and employees that live in Japan to make sure they were all right. These bears are a wonderful gesture and it's nice seeing the whole Second Life community getting together to help in this cause.

Hello...here in Australia, we were fortunate enough to recieve much support from the rest of the world during our floods - and in particular from the Japanese. We appreciate everybody's help, but many other countries have also suffered terrible hardship in recent times and have recieved well-needed supported.

It is now our turn to offer our support and sympathy during Japan's time of terrible tragedy. I am asking every financial Second Life community member to purchase one of these wonderful Linden bears and to remember Japan in this awful disaster.

For all members who rely on 'camping' to achieve $L...please visit as many as you can and save enough to also purchase a bear.

Those members with Hover Titlers can also have the link displayed above them for wherever they travel in SL - to remind anyone who doesnt know about the bears to purchase one.

My hat is off to Linden and all others who have offered their support - good on you!
