Support the Japan Earthquake & Pacific Tsunami Relief with Linden Dollars

Our thoughts today are with all of those who are suffering in the devastation caused by the earthquakes in Japan and the tsunami in the Pacific. We encourage all Second Life Residents to support the relief efforts however they can, and we would like to help.

We have created two special Linden Bears--one that is wearable and one that sits--which are now for sale in the Marketplace at several pricing levels: L$300, L$1,000 and L$3,000. Here’s the direct link to purchase them. We will donate all proceeds from sales of this bear to the Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief efforts of the American Red Cross.

Please help us to support the relief efforts - buy the bears, and help spread the word in Second Life.

Additionally, we know that independent groups in Second Life are also planning to support relief efforts. For example, Radar Magazine in Second Life will be holding a month-long event and are seeking designers to donate virtual items (see this article for details). If your group is planning an inworld relief effort, then please share it in the comments here.

Thank you,

Kim

UPDATE -- April 14, 2011: Thank you to everyone who contributed to this campaign! In total, this doation drive raised more than L$8.3 million.

The special-edition Linden bears are no longer for sale, but you can of course contribute directly to the charity of your choice and participate in the numerous efforts to support Japan in Second Life organized by fellow Residents. (If your group is planning an inworld relief effort, then please do share it with us in the comments here.)

The Avatar Charitable Trust will make a grant to the Japan Tsunami Relief Fund sponsored by Linden Labs.  We are a newly formed charitable trust, raising lindens to support those in need.  We encourage others to give to this worthy cause and to support your fellow man whenever you are able.  If you want to know more about the Avatar Charitable Trust, please stop by our office in the village of Breakers sim.  Here you can get a notecard, or make a donation if you are so inclined.  We hope to do whatever we can to open doors of hope for everyone.  Come join us in this effort.

It is a fantastic idea and I so want to participate but I've been having a terrible time getting a Relief Linden Bear. I've made 3 attempts at purchasing these Bears on XStreet but each time an error has occurred. so the transaction could not be completed. I have gotten other stuff from XStreet and no problem. I don't know what the issue is. The following items could not be delivered.  For more details, view your invoice online. I so want to contribute but am getting a little frustrated. :-(

Worthy cause and More than happy to contribute. However, it would be nice if there was a "merchant" to contact about "Order Status: Delivered" items that never actually got delivered. With a normal marketplace purchase you contact vendor aith taransaction info. But with LL as the merchant there is no one to contact so funds transfered and no bear. *sigh*

This is very nice, I'll look into donating some, Japan needs all the help they can get.

Great Idea from earlier in the comments, please put the bear on a vendor so that we can place it on our sims and people who pass through...and don't read the blogs,  can have the chance to buy them and contribute.

Sorry - I'd vote against LL endorsing vendors that LL does control. There is just too much opportunity for mischief there and, sadly, some people would take advantage of that to make money. :(

LL putting their own vendors in public places - info hubs, welcome areas, LL builds, even something nice on the public/protected land of high-traffic regions - would be great. If people *know* that 100% of the money is going to LL, I think they would be more comfortable donating.

Or maybe a new ticket type that could request that a Linden or Mole drop an official vendor at a slurl? Dunno if they have the molepower to keep with that traffic that might create..

Also, not to disparage these lovely bears at all but how about tracking down Starax/Light Waves or Madcow Cosmos or Masterful Escape or some other uberbuilders and ask if they'd like to contribute a bear that LL can resell for charity?

Any live concerts happening? Haven't been inworld much but would love to play for our brothers and sisters in Japan.

For those who can not afford a bear, please post to my Japanese language forum thread - it is in English - I will send you a bear.  Show your support.

I would also like to see a vendor for these Bears inworld, as my partner tried 3 times to buy one through the Marketplace and it didn't work.

I have tried twice to purchase a Bear on Marketplace and both times failed, I wish LL would fix this or at least make the Bears for sale in-world

don`t send money to Japan, they have plenty of that. What they need is drinkingwater and food, they are running out of it. First aid is what they need right now.

Where can I buy one in world? The marketplace purchasing system doesn't like me most of the time and I get an error message.

Thank you to all the amazing people who attended last nights special performance "For the People of Japan" on the Historic Provincetown sim.

In three short hours, we raised an astonishing L$367,080!

The donation candle will remain lit at the Affirmation Project, as long as there remains a need.

Godspeed the People of Japan.

It was a great and laudable idea, but -- as it so often happens -- the execution was lacking. It seems that the  Marketplace, as well as the inworld delivery system behind it, pretty much broke down due to the overwhelming response of the SL community.

I did not get my bear and assume that the transaction was rolled back. But instead of giving it another try (and another try, and then another one), I will find a different channel to donate the money, because my own Marketplace sales are also suffering from the onslaught.

The deliveries of other merchant's products are failing as well. It seems almost as if the new Marketplace would scale as badly as the SL grid itself. So while I support the sentiment behind this fundraiser, I really hope that LL will take a different approach in the future.

Alternatively, you could fix the Marketplace and the unreliable magic box delivery system. Which is not the only thing that needs fixing btw. While you're at it, it would be great if you could also give us the option to disable the sales confirmation spam, enable customer review notifications for merchants, and add a messaging system that allows customers to notify merchants in case of delivery failures.

Furthermore, the login process needs to be automated or made compulsory, and the maturity rating preference has to be the same as the one that customers chose in their SL client. Right now, the sales of mature and adult products are tanking due to the recent changes that were made to accomodate legal minors on this very adult platform. You might also want to automate the redelivery process, so that customers are not left with the sole option of giving us a one-star rating and a bad review (which merchants are currently not even being notified of). Thanks in advance.

Thank you so much for this fund raising effort.

We, in Japan, need a lot.....meds, drinking water, paper diapers...and of course money and a morale support.  I feel proud of the SL community and really grateful for all you are doing to send help.

The tsunami threats have ended so far but we are still faced with threats from the nuclear reactors.  And it's almost mind boggling to think of where to begin with the affected areas when thousands of people are still missing.

It will be a great support for the Japanese to know that so many people in SL support us and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Great Kim, we at the Hosoi Cluster are also doing our very best. To help the people of Japan Hosoi Ichiba has set up a Relief Fund to be delivered to The Red Cross. Hosoi Ichiba has set up donation signs in all the Hosoi Cluster Sims. Hosoi Ichiba already made a starting contribution of L$ 50.000. Please help the Japanese people and join us in contributing.

The signs will stay up for a month.

It is a great idea, but I was wondering how the conversion to real world money would work for the lab.  The same as it is for us?

This is a great idea!! Did this the other day.  Also I am looking for a place to donate more.  I am a hostess at a club on sl and whatever tips I make in the next few weeks I am donating to the relief fund.

Nowadays more and more people like to buy goods though internet, just because it is very convenient to us. However, this will lead to many people spend less time to make exercise. Don’t worry I know have a very fitness shoes—MBT can improve our health. When you wear it, you are making exercise, very comfortable. You can try it.
