Virtual Black Rock City Week

As a recognized Universe in Burning Man's Multiverse, Burn2 is having a "VRC Week" in its own virtual Regional environment called Deep Hole. A limited number of visitors will be able to access the event with avatars, and they will find a place filled with things that are strongly evocative of the beloved Black Rock City - with none of the dust, heat, or pungent odors we've known. There will be a Man Burn on Burn Night, and there will also be a rendering of the Empyrean Temple that will burn on August 30th, 11:00 am PT/SLT. The event runs from August 30th to September 7th. "STRUKTURO" is a sound installation space produced by noise-classical musician Tia Rungray. The concept of his installation space is "the structural decomposition of the human psyche". Last month we made a few updates to the Destinations Floater in the viewer. In an effort to make it more newcomer friendly, we’ve made a few updates to our policy which pertains specifically to those listings that are chosen for Editors’ Picks and the Floater in the viewer. You can see all of the updates on the “About the Second Life Destination Guide” page.

If you find any listings in the Destinations floater that are not newcomer friendly, please do drop us a line at editor@lindenlab.com and let us know. We are trying our best to check it every few weeks. We also encourage those that do get chosen to be featured in Editors’ Picks or the floater to please let us know, via email, if they decide to change their region's settings. 

Do keep in mind that the only category we are not able to maintain, change or update is the “What’s Hot Now” category. That category is automatic and randomly showcases any of the entries on the Destination Guide that currently have 20 to 30 avatars in it. 

The rest of the categories in the floater, and Editors’ Picks, are the only two places we are trying to maintain a stricter policy, so please do visit the web version of the Destination Guide as there are many more beautiful regions to explore. A new real-world destination is opening up their virtual location in Second Life tomorrow. The Peale is a purpose-built museum building in Baltimore. Join us at The Peale’s Founder’s Day Virtual Open House in SecondLife on Saturday, August 15th starting at 8am PT/SLT. You can also watch it on our YouTube live stream.

The Peale in Baltimore, which is housed in the first purpose-built museum building in the United States, has extended its reach into the virtual world known as Second Life. While the current pandemic may prevent many people from visiting the Peale in person, this ambitious new project allows virtual visitors to explore the 1814 museum building online and attend curated exhibits and interactive events safely from the comfort of their homes. The Glinka Gallery

The Glinka Gallery is a group of four galleries dedicated to fine art, photography, poetry, music, and dance by SL artists. Glinka Gallery One focuses on new art exhibitions. Glinka Gallery Two is home to the permanent collection of art and photography from previous shows. The Fibonacci Gallery is dedicated to the short-form poetry that adheres to the Fibonacci number sequence. The Frank O'Hara Building is a poetry gallery for Second Life poets. There is also the Frank O'Hara room for special events and readings. The piazza is home to Glinka gallery's resident dance group The Sway & Dance Troupe who mix choreography, music, and poetry in their very visual dance spectaculars. The Peale Founder's Day Celebration

Visit The Peale Museum island on Sunday, August 15th at 3pm SLT/Pacific for a screening of the Founder's Day event to celebrate the 1 year birthday of the Peale in Second Life, and the 207th birthday of the physical Peale, located in Baltimore, Maryland. This live broadcast will be "projected" into the courtyard of the Virtual Peale, providing a portal into the physical Peale. Meet RL artists, staff, and partners from the Peale, and see the progress of the ongoing restoration of the oldest museum building in America, established in 1814 by artist Rembrandt Peale. The hour-long event will also feature a musical performance by Scott Patterson for the Proximity Project, a history and demonstration of silhouette cutting with Lauren Muney, and a look back at Out Of The Blocks with Aaron Henkin.

SWALLOW by Vincent Priesley

Not unlike the recalling of a dream, Priesley’s realization of “Swallow” offers an exaggerated and immersive experience of being truly devoured. A monster realized offline was meshed, textured, and assembled to the artist’s recollection, it’s materiality presenting a look into Priesley’s psyche and heart. Featured in the jaws and guts are framed reliefs and cutout figures of loved ones. Poetic words and onomatopoeia line the anatomy, inviting viewers to explore the inviting depths that beckon.

Second Life is home to some of the best Digital Artists of our time, and you can see their work scattered throughout the many Art Galleries and Exhibits across the grid. Here is a small selection of galleries that you can explore this weekend; find even more in the Art category on the Destination Guide. 

Artsville, a collaborative effort between ValiumSL and Art Korner, is one of the newest galleries on this list and already has many exhibits featuring all forms of art.

Artsville is a thriving community of photographers and artists who take inspiration from each other's work to grow together. Events include: 2D art exhibitions, Immersive 3D art installations, Photography workshops, Photo Contests, Poetry Readings, and fun parties. Artsville is a collaboration between Art Korner and ValiumSL. Artsville was built by Megan Prumier and is located on ValiumSL.

The GBTH Project has been around for many years and boasts some of the most thought-provoking art by a number of talented artists. Colonia 2.0 is one of their exhibits that features 16 different artists and 3 of them spoke about their work on a new podcast from GBTH.

The GBTH Project is an SL-based experimental arts space consisting of 8+ dedicated gallery spaces. To GBTH (Grab By The Horns) is to take courageous initiative in guiding the boundlessness of artistry, making the conceptual tangible. Ethnographic Exhibits of Two Cultures

The Community Virtual Library (CVL) presents an ethnographic exhibit of two lowland tropical rain forest indigenous cultures of the Republic of Panama. The exhibit, designed by Nexus Dot, a cultural anthropologist, in collaboration with co-curator, and media specialist, Shiloh Emmons, highlights two decades of Nexus’s ethnographic research. The Lost Wonderland
