Thunes to acquire payments platform Tilia LLC

Recommended Posts

My initial take is that this might help people outside the US with payments into SL and it might help bring a larger group of people in from around the globe. LL itself is not being sold but is selling Tillia. Our happy little world remains.

This can surely only be good for Second Life users!

..right?

People who pay a lot of money for a company, expect to make even more money back.

Expect cash-out fees to rise.

/me waits for the merchants to start squealing again...

Breaking News:

The purchase of LL by a group  headed by well known "buy, repaint, slice up, and resell in bits" investor, has resulted in LL being sliced up, repainted and sold off in bits

As predicted.

Pictures at 11.

Why do we get stuck with the spleen?!
I mean yay, we get the core bidneth!

Well.

We all saw this coming.

Now LL gets to go down with the debt.

That is sadly the scenario most of the time, when this kind of selling off happens.
Maybe the investors don't see how to solve "the elephant in the room" problem, so they go for the money and let the rest sink in the swamp. :(

The sky is falling again.

Ouch! My poor ears are already sore from all the whining!

Wait until the customers whine, because the prices (like the ones from Happy Weekend) go up again.
Or when the exchange fees go up for buying L$.

Welp. Interesting times ahead then. If this means that SL will need to switch to traditional payment processors, I'm going to grab the popcorn. Wouldn't be the first adult online platform forced into pg13 seppuku.

Thunes and Linden Research, Inc. (“Linden Lab”), the current majority owner of Tilia, have agreed to an exclusive five-year partnership

Good to play for 5 more years at least then ?

If this news had been a few days earlier, I would not have renewed my P+ for a whole year. :(
The feeling is not good when a company starts selling off their most promising "for the future" parts.

Partnerships sadly don't guaranty that both partners stay afloat.

I thought the sky already fell when Tilia came around and JP Morgan invested and, and, and...

In the end we only can wait and see what happens.
But that is the case with literally everything that is discussed here on the forums about Second Life and Linden Lab.

I can remember even after having had a verified paypal account for over a decade, when Tillia came around I had to get get 're verified' which included among other things, dancing on one leg in a pink sock while the other was wearing blue, naming each of my 10 toes and the reason I chose those names, identifying 100 different species of birds along with naming the last 200 transactions on Linden, the exact amount and the reason for them.  Sure would hate to go through all that all over again!

That article is TWO YEARS OLD.

It basically says that Thunes is a Fake Money Crypto-Crap Enabler based out of Singapore, connecting Fake Money Crypto-Crap Not-Banks to ACTUAL international money transfer services.

They specialise in B2B transfers, not facing "actual customer" like you and me.

Only people who will MAYBE be able to pay for SL as a result, are Crypto-Crap fans in the far east, and some of the dodgier countries in Africa and the Middle East.

"“We don’t have the DNA of a consumer-facing business and we’re focused on B2B transactions,” CEO Peter De Caluwe says of the company’s profile."

I kind of predict something like "SL will need to switch to traditional payment processors" will happen, because my prediction is that Tilia will fail under a new company.

Taking the paragraph as a whole, it seems like a redeeming quality from here.

This sounds like a good shake-up is here too, presuming it's something so far unannounced

Quote

Brad Oberwager, CEO of Linden Lab, said, “Thunes is an exceptional company that directly connects nearly every payment method and market worldwide. The combination of Tilia and Thunes will give Linden Lab’s customers more payment choices, and the ability to receive pay-outs in real-time, anywhere, into the wallet or bank account of their choice. It will be business as usual for our people and our customers as we bring Tilia and Thunes together.”

[bold emphasis not mine, for sake of clarity]
