All true, but before they start thinking about one of the memberships, the potential new residents first have to know that these memberships even exist, don't they?

yes, nothing wrong with letting know it's available, but dont tell and push a pay sign in their face.
They don't even know how to walk dress up, or tp yet when they enter the gates into the real world of SL áfter that welcome hub, offering subscriptions already is to soon.
And don't only offer subscriptions only to gét things ... make it also clear it's a donation to keep SL in the air, be supportive as member, not just a account we need get paying asap, connect to the total of SL. The plus subscription would be a excellent thing to promote this way.

There are lots more things, also organisation wise and how things became during the years, but as Dutchie i better don't put it here, Americans and many others don't understand us, as is seen daily here.

Gelukkig is niet iedereen een Nederlander. We hebben er al zoveel in ons kleine kikkerlandje. :D

This is interesting! It implies others have a cultural bias against a way of complaining or critiquing! #TIL

Thanks!

There are hundreds of youtube posts about US expats, students and visitors where they nearly all tell they have to get used to the directness of dutchies.
When we, often, can tell something in 3 words, we won't use 4. What often is taken as blunt rude and unsocial, we don't use a A4 format letter for saying yes.(or no)

Here's something fun... you know how there's all that play games to win L$ stuff trying to grab newbies attention before they can even know what they can buy...

Well. I watched a newbie today and discovered that even on the off chance a newbie does take the bait, the teleporters do not work

image.thumb.png.b7ab56cdc27a09899d7fd691194c7cab.png

Yup, the newbie tried to go through both, and neither worked. So I tried myself. The Linden Realms one does nothing, whilst the paleoquest one throws up a scary permissions dialog...

And all this time I thought it was because they only knew 3 English words! Especially if you discounted the interjected Dutch words thrown in the mix. 😄

Makes you wonder which Mole, or Linden would most like to know about this! Maybe @Viola Mole would be a good start, since she follows the discussion?

I've just checked those two teleporters.   The Paleoquest one was working when I tried it, but the Linden Realms one needed a restart.   We're aware that they're stalling intermittently and a fix is in QA at the moment.

After relooking at my comment, I should point out that the attempted quip was directed at my own extended dutch emigrant family who tended to speak with a fairly terse English vocabulary for a long time because they were learning the language after emigrating from the Netherlands.  When one has a limited vocabulary, it is rather easy to come across as being too direct when not having all the words to soften the impact of the point.

So that portal did work. The first time you enter a region with an Experience, such as any Linden Game, you get this popup. I suppose they should have had a  pastel pink and blue warning sign, with purple flowers and a smiling fairy, that told you - WARNING scary permissions popup is next.  The umbrella kids can't handle anything these days.

No, you're right, we should make Second Life as scary for those not familiar with computers and full of as much technobabble as possible. That'll show those new users for trying our old technology. How dare they expect things to just work. You're a genius! You've saved Second Life!

You are too generous :)   I only saved the scaredy cats from askng firestorm support if they were just hacked, assuming once they see that scary popup they will leave SL on the spot.

If you think that popup is scary to newbies, try to play Paleoquest and see the mean warnings you get when the game thinks you are cheating.  One threatens to ban you from the game, and possibly take action against your brand new account if you continue to cheat.  But it's almost impossible to cheat in Paleoquest - but jump too high, or sit still too long, and they will send you to the back shed for a spanking and a nasty worded warning.  It will take you about 5 mins to walk (running and flying not allowed) to get back to where they booted you from.

Watch the Paleoquest video next to the Portal in the Welcome Center that Magellan Linden narrates. He warns about you "whiney little explorers" and how hard it is. This is not a game for sensitive newbies scared by a popup.

Honest question from a committed non-gamer: What would new users of the mobile viewer expect of SL's embedded games such as Paleoquest?

It's possible these games could hurt retention more than help, as I suspect the "social casino" does, and whatever that "skilled gaming" mess is—I felt dirty just camming into it, and I'm not even joking. But new users may all come from a sports betting background for all I know, and the successor to Candy Crush may threaten to take their firstborn.

If it is not intended for newbies, why put it in the welcome area then? O.o

Have you ever watched someone who doesn't use computers very often and how they tend to react when a wall of text pops up, they will always look for a way out, assume something is trying to give them a computer virus etc. Most don't read the text.

I'm not saying that newbies are 'scared' in the child who needs comforting sense, I'm saying they're scared in the 'will this steal my credit card information?' sense. These are often people with lower technical literacy, or English is not their first language. There's no reason the teleport portal couldn't just work, there are other portals in the welcome hub that do just work and LL has the power to make that happen.

I've already watched several newbies try to go through that portal, fail and walk away.

I think playing Paleoquest as it exists now would be very difficult on a mobile viewer.  It is a game of precise jumping, hidden hazard avoidance, and exact timing.  Even with a wide screen, you need better movement tools than a touch screen.  Actually the game is difficult to play with the SL Viewer, because of the lack of Quickjump, a feature in most TPV's.  The same is true for Linden Realms.   I have tried to play Paleoquest with the SL Viewer, on a fast gaming computer with wired mouse and keyboard.  It was not fun, but possible with enough practice.  Everyone I took there to try to play said "get me out of here" the first time they were stuck in quicksand and being eaten alive by flesh eating ants.  The plants are just as hungry.  It's a game for experienced gamers.  The only incentive is the 50 L$ you can get once a week for completing the five quests.

Once you get enough practice, maybe in 2-3 months of playing, you can get thru all the quests in about 30 mins.  Less if you get a hints and tricks sheet, since the game provides no guidance at all to routes within a quest.

Why?  Because one of the very first questions a lot of people ask is, "How do I get money in this game?".  You don't like the Buy Lindens kiosk and you don't like the games.  What do you suggest we answer them?

I normally tell them to take some time and learn a bit first to see if plan on staying.  They soon realize, however, that running around in a Senra avatar is detrimental to socializing in a lot of places so they want to upgrade their avatar at the very least.  They can't usually get an SL job so they're left with...games of some kind or buying Ls.

To be clear I do think that it's for newbies, I was just trying to make the point that it wouldn't be there in the newbie area if it wasn't for newbies

I wish the Linden Realms gem collecting game were an easier way to earn lindens. I know regular players gamed it so much that LL had to make it harder, but it used to be a great way for newbies to earn a little money. Paleoquest is for the more serious gamers, but I agree that it's too strict about jumping too high or sitting too long. It even scares me, though I think it looks great.

Can Linden Lab please figure out some way for newbies to earn a few lindens? I think the rest of us pay enough now in transaction fees that they should be able to afford to give the newbies an incentive to stay and spend money too.

As much as I detest the idea of the Social Casino, it's fun to play the games there, even if the payout is not spendable on anything. The Skills Games region is not for me, but it usually has a few avatars in it, so that's a win for LL.
