These are a few things on land owned by Lindens, so less likely to just disappear.

You can pick up a bicycle and explore: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Puffin Head/43/22/23

You can go surfing: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Treeowatoor/199/27/21

You can play funfair games for prizes: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Merrymount/170/146/35

You can visit the Pyri Funfair, grab a ticket, and go on the tunnel of love ride: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Pyri Peaks/109/136/114

There's a small maze here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Downing Falls/129/91/37

You can do a quest for a Simon Linden bear, which involves exploring some older locations in Second Life: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Denby/211/36/33

The opening screen of both the official viewer and Firestorm, plus the messages that appear on the loading screens, announce events and interesting places to explore. There's also information posted on the main blog: https://community.secondlife.com/blogs/blog/4-featured-news/

For me I just explore and see what I can find to entertain myself most times I end up in nature spots and just chill or at clubs meeting others. But I am also working on my RP sim to re open with a new look. not much RP going on atm but I know a lot of RP sims are seeking people.

No, it's because you had too much of your politics in your profile. I could see that would likely lead to trouble, so I didn't reply.

OMG Randall. You've known me well over a decade, here. And you had to look at my PROFILE to figure that out?

Anyway, I was only saying hi! I usually wait until at least the third wave before proposing marriage!

If one likes trains, besides the SLRR, there is a group called "The Great Little Trains of SL" which regularly posts information about what could be considered the narrow gauge short lines of SL.  Zany Zen Railway is an example of one of them.  I enjoy going and riding on various short lines from time to time.  My experience with these has been that you show up at the station, and either a train is already there that you can hop on, or one shows up shortly that you can hop on.

Long ago, there were sandboxes (I believe Little Blue/Fermi) that had speed-building contests. I'd love to see those again. With prims, of course - everything in-world.

[Edit] The hobo community also had a game called Primsumption. It was like Pictionary, but in 3D - the audience had to guess what was being built by a contestant.

I know what I did as a brand new avatar in 2007 and that is to search "Groups" and find out if there were groups already formed about stuff I already liked, filled with people who liked what I liked.  Searching for niche things like certain Sci-Fi fanbases  (Star Wars, Star Trek, Dr Who etc...) and popular books at the time (Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Twilight etc...) or lifelong interests (Ancient Rome, Classical Mythologies, Flying) led me to regions to explore and people to meet who were like-minded and already shared at least one interest to talk about.  And in conversing with those people about things we have in common, I learned everything I needed to learn about how the world worked, how the viewer(s) worked, how to get better things done better, and how to really maximize the SL experience.

Second Life to me has always been about a "seek-and-ye-shall-find" curiosity that is always gratified whenever I go looking.  Searching groups always leads me to new and interesting experiences -- one-offs or long-term.

Nice thread, I hope the suggestions will continue. I mainly wander SL taking pictures, so it's nice to see some different ideas to try.

Today I joined a group called The Nature Collective. If, like me, you enjoy nature in SL, taking pictures etc. then it seems a nice group to join. They have an Explorer HUD for free where you can find LMs to a variety of nature spaces to explore, I will give this a go as well as my usual methods of finding places to explore on Flickr, Destination Guide, etc. They also seem to hold events such as book club or group outings, I am not sure my introverted nature will allow me to attend any of these but you never know! Anyway I thought I would add them to the list here.

We introverts have clever ways of disguising ourselves in a crowd. The extroverts are the ones who have a hard time faking it. Anyway, you might be surprised how many people like you are already in the group, just waiting for you to show up.  Good luck.

Inventory sorting: okay, not a 'fun activity' perhaps - but put on some music, or if you have two monitors (or just a ton of monitor real estate), pop on a film or a series, open a few chats, and do it. Make a pot of tea, pop a cat on your lap, and have at it! You'll be glad you did later!

I don't drink tea, and it's too late for coffee. And I don't have a cat. But will a protein shake and a German Shepherd work? He's 45 kgs, but still thinks he will fit on a lap at times.

What's that take to sort - 10 minutes? 😏

Anyway, speaking of tiny inventories, I suppose I could add a few more activities to the list to help pad those rookie numbers (*gigglesnort*):

  • Hunts
  • Group gift/freebie/Midnight Mania/Lucky Board runs
  • Avatar design challenges
  • Entering photo contests (plenty show up on Flickr)
  • Blogging in exchange for products if that's your thing
  • Bargain shopping and sale hunting
  • Creating your own items from scratch if you're skilled like that or building with kits
  • Breedables

.. 2 days and 3 pots of tea! And I'm nowhere near done yet ..

Anyway, more stuff! ( .. To do, not to put in my inventory!)

  • Do a themed builds, challenge yourself; a Victorian tea room with a prim budget of 100. An Art Deco spa. A baroque ballroom. A Steampunk kitchen. A medieval gym?!
  • Try jousting or fencing; yes, you can!
  • Captain a pirate ship, or join a crew as a gunner; go forth to battle, or just take to the open seas and find someone to plunder (consensually, of course!).
  • Design virtual hats. Become a mad hatter. Bwahaha!
  • Have a tea party. Make sure you stir correctly. Be admired for your prowess in the art of etiquette.
  • Get an aeroplane and try to get a landing score to be proud of (and remember; a good landing is one everyone walks away alive from, a great landing is one where you can take off again!).

Sir.

A few quick tips to speed this up (if you don't already know):

Search "Demo" in your inventory. Delete everything. Now that you've removed 6,000 items...

Move to Notecards - delete those, seriously, just delete em! They're also hiding in your hair, shoe, clothing, animation/pose, food, and photo backdrop folders, most likely. Yeet! You can search "Please" in your inventory and that should catch a bunch.

Pray to all gods everywhere that your Objects folder isn't a hot mess of items named Object. It likely is. Good luck with that one.

And finally, Landmarks. The folder. And don't forget they're hiding in store folders, too. I've probably got tons I need to clear out. Ugh.

Now sort the rest. All...1500 remaining items. 😏

That should keep you busy for a lil bit.

But for some actual "dumb fun" entertainment:

  • Grab a few friends and go to animation stores to play with the group dances. The sillier the better.
  • Find weird places to chat and/or dance and TP your friends in. I've had an entire conversation standing around on the ocean floor after a region crossing went slightly awry. Abandoned hotels, lounges, castles, and roleplay sims are also great for that.
  • Go test drive vehicles (motorcycles are my preference). If there's a track, even better. Spend the next two weeks talking yourself out of buying the damn thing.
  • Get a Karaogay machine. I'm embarrassed to say how long that thing kept me entertained. It might be weeks.
  • Hot air balloon rides or pretty much anything where falling out of the sky is guaranteed. Embrace the suck and enjoy the scenery on the way down. Make sure you've got a cute AO if you're going for style points.
  • Go yacht shopping knowing full well you will never buy a dang yacht. Bring friends to help talk you out of buying the dang yacht. Talk another into buying the dang yacht. Go for a ride in your friend's new dang yacht.
  • Find a goth/industrial club and request any song on the industrial rock/metal spectrum that isn't by Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, Ministry, Rammstein, Front Line Assembly, KMFDM, NIN, Skinny Puppy, or Wumpscut. Watch the DJ's head explode. This is actually funnier in real life, because at that point, you've eliminated about half of their collection and they start digging through albums and/or CDs to see what's left, lol.

Lmao, Merzbow, yes!

There was a DJ at the first club I ever went to in NYC who eventually went on to produce music. Terrorfakt, if you're interested. They were handing out his first EP or somethin' one night and I wound up with a copy. Basically, a danceable beat-driven version of Merzbow. Industrial noise is my JAM, but you'd be hard-pressed to find any current DJs who have it within easy reach, LOL. I mean, why strain yourself when your entire night is playing Headhunter over and over. 😏

Funny how that meme extends into SL, even, LOL. Goth clubs crack me up sometimes.

You're too kind!  But I think there are hundreds of people into all this, they just don't use the forums...I never did when I was in SL all of the time...

@Ayashe Ninetails Thanks, just looked up Terrorfakt on YT...sounds great!

Awesome! It's music for the soul. He's the only DJ I've ever found who brought legit noise to the dance floor! 😄

I should probably note - remember to tip your SL DJs well if you tease them with obscure band requests. Sometimes they do come through. ❤️

Right now it's just been shopping and going to events. I used to spend a lot of time in sandboxes just creating things and figuring out how SL works. I don't got to dance places much but listening to a musician in SL was one of the truly transcendent things I did. Sailing and flying is good as well as going to amusement parks.
