John...all of the above are true!

It's very possible to earn $L in Second Life.  What's important to know is:

  • ALL the in-world methods are less efficient than simply taking some money you earned in a Real Life job, and buying your $L via a credit card or a verified PayPal account.  For this reason, I always emphasize that you shouldn't do anything in SL with the primary aim of making money.  Do it because it's something you love to do!  Personal example:  I love to teach, and offer three classes each week at Caledon Oxbridge University.  On a good weekend, I will make about $L1,000.  That's $4.00 USD, for about five hours of work.
  • You can collect small amounts of $L by playing games like Linden Realms, entering contests at clubs, playing sploders, etc.
  • You can collect small amounts of $L by playing resident-run games like Fish Hunt.  Both this and the previous method take a lot of time invested, for very little return.
  • You can make somewhat more money in a job like exotic dancer or club host.  These jobs pay in customer tips.  Again, you could make a lot more money by working an hour in a Real Life minimum wage job than you can by working an hour in an SL club.
  • If you have a big music collection, you can set up as an SL DJ.  DJs also make money from tips.
  • If you have musical talent, you can become a live singer or musician.  If you can develop a following, you can make more than most DJs.  Both this and the previous method require a fairly small investment in equipment or software.
  • You can make quite a lot of money (in some cases, enough to support yourself in Real Life) by one of the following two methods.
    • Land Baron.  Buy a lot of land, and rent it out to tenants.  This can be profitable, but there's a lot of competition and it requires a large capital investment.
    • Content Creator.  Learn to make things (clothing, hair, animations, vehicles, houses, trees...anything!) well enough that other people want to buy it.  This requires a large investment in developing the necessary skills, creating the content, and setting up and running a business.  Like any business, there's a risk of failure.

I think in general it's easier for women to make money than for guys.  I've had some fun and relatively well paying jobs in SL while a lot of guys I know have to buy lindens.

Really? I was once told the best earning adult jobs in SL were voicing males,...  I have to believe this 3rd party info though as I'm quite oblivious of escorting incomes.

I wasn't really talking about escorting, although yes that too.

I met a guy in SL once who owned a club, however in SL the club was owned by his female alt, for this very reason,  he said he had owned clubs as a guy, and  owned clubs as a girl, the girl owned   clubs did better financially.

Trying  to draw connections between the impact of female managers in a RL company, and the impact of a male using  a female alt to run his SL club.  While  the RL situation would tend to cause one  to conclude that females posses valuable business skills, in the SL situation the business skills are going the same regardless of the avatar appearance.

I've never met a male escort, but I expect Orwar could make a lot of money at it.  Dark, handsome, vampire, intriguingly dangerous looking...

And if I voice, I'll have an exotic accent...

... That awkward moment when an ex called me on Skype from her phone in her car, and her father hears me say something and goes 'Woah, a Swede!? I fell in love with a Swedish woman for her accent alone, he sounds really cute!". Grimaces awkwardly.

John

Stripper / escorts can make some money. This also requires an investment in a sexy avatar (Mesh, Catwa, Skin, Huds).

A seriously profitable way is blogging. Requires a little investment (domain, hosting) and a serious amount of time. I am doing this since years and does make me some nice cash aside.
