  1. This last weekend while exploring I encountered two of them. 1. The notecard/landmark/whatever giver that spams you when you are near the store but not yet in it. Was parked on the road checking out the map when a giver offered it to me not just once but three times before I got aggravated enough to mute it. 2. The security system that gives you just a few seconds of warning, if any at all, before sending you home. Being pushed off the parcel to the street, OK, but being sent all the way home and trying to figure out where you were at the time in order to continue your exploring just ticks me off. ETA: How about a forum spell checker that doesn't know such common terms as SL and notecard
  2. I have some idea how you feel. I had a comparatively small parcel, about 2800 sq.m, roadside and just about all of it steep hill side. The kind of parcel most say "yuck!" as they look on for something much more level, but I had a blast building my house way up on the top terraforming into the hillside as best I could and creating a series of ramps up to it or using an elevator. Then a neighbor who already owned a lot of the sim decided she wanted the rest and went psycho with giant pink prims. Lots or ARs and no results, not even for the pinks that were encroaching which really burnt my butt, and we didn't have the ability to return encroaching objects at that time. After a while I just had to get out of there, set my parcel of sale low enough that a bot snatched it up and then the bot's owner saw what a mess he was in and sold it for just a little more then he paid me. PO'd I moved into a Linden Home vowing to never own land in SL again and not renew my premium membership when it came up. I tried for a while decorating my Linden Home doing what I could to make it feel more like a home and less like a cookie cutter house, but after maybe a month I was a crazy kind of bored and I'm back on the mainland again enjoy a new home I built myself. It doesn't have the challenges of a steep hill side but does sit on the corner of a road and railroad both of which I've already used quite a bit. LOTS of empty land around me much of which are for sale, keeping my fingers crossed I don't get another psycho neighbor but if I do I'm more prepared to just move on if that becomes the only option. That's what is keeping me from moving up in tier, the possibility of having to dump my land at a loss because LL won't do anything about the one person that is driving everyone else off a sim, and I suspect it's contributing greatly to others owning less land and more land just sitting abandoned.
  3. The notecard that comes with the railcar has several landmarks of places that have rez zones. Also if you decide that the railcar isn't the best way to travel the virtual rails you can pick up some freebie locomotives at these locations.
  4. Is it Halloween already? :robotvery-happy:
  5. There's the all time favorite of bringing them to some crowded place then having everyone sing Happy Birthday to him as a surprise. Everyone I've done that to just loves it (and then I go into hiding for several days on my birthday). :smileyvery-happy:
  6. Sounds like a problem I was struggling with back with V2 when I finally decided to stop being a stubborn old fart and check out mesh, the solution I found was to take my DNS settings off AUTO and put in Google's Public DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4). I have not tried this with a Mac, too cheap for anything other then Linux and Windows, and it appears that using Google's DNS outside the US could cause other problems (old article on that here). Here's another article and list of public DNS.
  7. Ah, I miss the good old days (/me ignores all the moans) when I'd use the trusty dial up modem to connect to my "academic use only" class account then login to my currently favorite MUD (multi user dungeon). Hoping for a night of relatively few disconnects and crashes I try logging in only to find out that MUD isn't up, so I try my second choice MUD (or third, or four,...). Finally in and chatting I find out the first MUD seems to be down for good, someone took revenge for being banned by informing the system admin that there was a rouge multi user simulator running on their machine. You young ones are spoiled :smileywink:
  8. At one time I thought vampires were scary and cool but with all things they have managed to wring as much money out of it as they can and continue wringing it. Interview With A Vampire I thought was one of the best movies I've seen, by the time the Underworld movies started coming out the genre started feeling stale and I never got around to seeing the last one (Kate Beckinsale in tight latex holds my attention for only so long), and then the Twilight series ... they just couldn't let 90210 stay dead. In SL I rarely realise someone is a vamp until I see it in their profile, or get hit with the bite request. Their not much more then an annoying insect on the first bite request, and after multiple bite requests they're muted. A really scary monster there.
  9. If the foundation is the root prim of the house then by stretching it you may be trying to put its center too far under the terrain. I know when moving a prim when it gets maybe half a meter under the terrain it "bounces" up, but I can force it to stay under the ground by linking it as a child prim to another prim. I'd try rezzing a cube at a corner of the foundation and stretching it to match the foundation's current dimensions, then trying stretching it as you were the original foundation and see if it misbehaves in the same way.

My sister showed me that trick .. time it takes to rezz a cube, type in the altitude, etc. .. i can fly up there using a flight accelerator Jeanne Well good for you. :smileytongue:

  12. What I'm seeing here is just the same night clubs with maybe a touch of additional decorations and the DJ occasionally saying "Happy nineth birthday SL". I'll miss the special displays and builds that took place on the celebration sims. I regret not spending more time checking out the previous two birthday celebrations.
  13. Have seen several of these beside the railroad and am curious as hell what they are. They are five sided capped with a five sided pyramid and seem to be no taller then the track level, the one in the pic below is located at http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Sibine/62/234/61. Found no clues in the land properties or object properties, the way things are named seems they are trying their best not to give any clues. They've had no effect on me as far as I know, just really curious.
  14. And there's more to see INSIDE of the dragon, it's a mini-quest. HINT: The entrance is at the bottom of the lighthouse.

  17. Sounds like something I read in this tutorial, something about an alpha sorting effect on a sculpted prim that overlaps itself.
  18. Great pic, and a nice break from the pretty dolled up glam pics. Hope to see more of these.
  19. "Overheard" others talking about SL while on a MUCK (a text only multiplayer platform) and it sounded pretty cool to me, but with Trident graphics and a dialup network I had to put it off for while. About two and a half years ago I finally got a high speed internet connection at home so I "borrowed" an old P4 that had been forgotten about at work, scrounged an old NVidia card from work too, and signed into SL for the first time. It was slowwwww, but still pretty cool, cool enough to put together a whole new computer so I can do SL in real time. The ability to create a 3D representation for myself and create other content is what most fascinates me, but due to outrageous land prices and other issues most of my building and creating happens on other grids.
  20. I have been very impressed in the way all my support tickets have been dealt with. ARs on the other hand, past experience and the numerous experiences of others I've read about here in the forums have left me wondering how many ARs are even read before being deleted.
  21. Being that this poster's avatar creation date, forum registration date, and forum last visited date are all the same I'd say they're sole purpose in coming here was to drop this turd in our forums and they didn't even bother to stick around for the responses.

  23. Have six accounts ... that I can remember My two oldest I play around with fairly regularly and another two that were just name grabs when they dumped the last name option. Then the two newest ones I've created when I felt like checking out what was the newest account creation system at the time. Occasionally I use one of the newer ones to go infohub hopping, I have deliberately not set a home for him so when I hit Shft-Ctrl-H he gets teleported to a random infohub. The other newbie I use for wandering the mainland roads exploring, I forget where I left him. Only have essentially one avatar for each account, had this account using a starter avatar or well over a year till some oldbies harassed me about it. Like with too many things I resisted changing this account's avatar but was pretty happy with the results once I did.

  25. All sounds pretty normal up to the part about being banned. Titanic is well known as a place for formal attire, a refreshing change from slutwear for the girls and no shirt for the guys. About being banned, even if you did talk civilly to the owner maybe he's just fed up with those that just ignore the dress code notices and try his tolerances.
