  1. If it is adjacent to your land then put in a service ticket and they should set it to sell to you, I've done this several times. Otherwise put in a service ticket requesting it and they might set it for sell to you or they might put it up for auction to the public and you'll end up bidding against others. But I've seen land with no real benefits, such as waterfront, go in auction with only a single bid at around 0.5L$/sq.m
  2. Oh joy, brace yourselves for yet another wave of get-rich-quick suckers.
  3. My avatar is male and 2m tall (about 6.5 feet) I typically just type in 50% in my shape's height and though still pretty tall by RL standards I feel pretty short around other avatars. When I try to go taller though the head seems to looks small, so I just keep my height at 50% and when soemone calls me shorty my come-back is to call them "shrunken head". :smileyvery-happy: ETA: The height was measured by prim, btw
  4. When I bought my first parcel I fully intended to stay within my "free" 512, but in less then a day claustrophobia and prim starvation set in and I tiered up and bought two neighboring 512s for 1536 total. It was great for a while, on a hill top, a beach in view, but had some ugly neighbors on either side of me so I dumped that and moved. Since then I've tiered up to 2560 mostly buying 512 or smaller plots. In my case a 512 got me hooked and nearby 512s was the ideal step size and convenience to tempt me to buy more. HOWEVER, with all the land I've bought I have never paid more then 1L$/sq.m and when having to get rid of land I always had to sell it for less then 1L$/sq.m (not much of a land baron). And occasionally I scan the map and search and it doesn't take much effort to find cheap land of all sizes, often roadside and water front. So selling land right now could be tough.
  5. Perhaps their sole purpose is to provoke "what the f***?!" responses, just like the forum post copybotters
  6. If you are renting the apartment from another land owner you may have to have a land group tag active to rez anything without it being autoreturned. May find the decal in your lost+found folder.
  7. Yet another copy/paste http://community.secondlife.com/t5/General-Discussion-Forum/Estate-manager/m-p/1223079/highlight/true#M36340
  8. A note about junk on abandoned land. I've filed support tickets to have abandoned land cleared and not only have it been done within a day they have thanked me for bringing it to their attention.
  9. I have ~2500 sq.m of roadside land on a steep hill side and though the lack of flat land seems to be a bother to most it has been a fun challenge for me. Had been slowly putting together something inspired by the Juro homes only making real progress when real inspiration hit me and not forcing a deadline. Been real happy with the results, really hope to finish someday. Then one day I log in and all over the place are huge purple blocks, one of which right in front of my home blocking my view of the road and other builds I liked having in my view. It's someone that owns lots of land there but in lots of small plots, my guess she is trying to drive off the other residents so she can buy up their land for her "party house" that she has announced in her land descriptions. One thing about me that can drive people crazy is my ability to be a real stubborn ass, which I intend to be in this case. The home I sent up into a skybox in hopes of being able to work on it in the future and I've started a new build, a Star Wars like tower high enough to look over the hill and view the lake in the neighboring sim, a view that Purple Prim Lady can't block. And two small parts of my land, awkward shaped parcels I only bought for the prims, sit right in the middle of the land I think she is trying to consolidate. Whatever I eventually do I intend to hold onto those as what I hope are thorns in her side. Hehehehehe
  10. Check out this tutorial on precision sculpties. The short of it is that sculpties can only have 256 data points in each of the x, y, and z directions and they are evenly spaced, so if a point of your sculpty falls between data point 100 and 101 in a direction the server snaps to either 100 or 101, a sort of potential round-off error in all three directions. So in the case of a sculpt pinched into multiple parts the vertices pinched to a single point could be snapped to different points by the server resulting in the string between parts having a visible thickness. The tutorial goes through a method of snapping your sculpt to a grid in Blender then moving the vertices to grid points closer to where you want them before baking and uploading the map.
  11. Quick search for socket A motherboards and just about all I find have AGP and PCI card slots, no PCIx16 which is what most if not all video cards use these days. Your old CPU and memory will not be compatible with the newer motherboard, and as others have stated you'll have to have a more powerful power supply. Just about all that's left is the case and hard drive. It's still doable for under $350, you'll just have to settle the next to newest stuff. I did something similar Dec 2010 for about $250 to $300, bought everything from newegg.com. Got me a Dual Core P4, 2GB RAM, and Nvidia 9500 and put it all into an old eMachine case (if I get robbed they probably will not touch it ).
  12. For learning Blender the tutorials at Blender Cookie are the best I have found so far. For uploading mesh, first you have to have payment info on file with LL, then you have to read through and pass their Mesh Upload Status Test. The tutorial I've been going through for static meshes is here. For clothing you'll have to further learn about rigged meshes, a point I haven't reached yet, but the previous two steps should be enough to keep you busy a while.
  13. I recall in a discussion about Google Sketchup that SL has a problem with the version of Collada, SL works with collada 1.4 and apparently newer versions make it crash. So make sure to save it as collada 1.4.0 or somehow convert it.

    Calculating land impact

Here's a link to Jinni Darkwatch's article on Land Impact and how it applies to prims, definitely worth reading.
  15. I've goofed up seating enough times that I can state it's possible to seat an avatar on a prim and end up embedded in a prim next to it, physics type doesn't matter. And also I'd like to note that hollowing and path cutting a box really cranks up the physics weight, just managed to get one up to 28.1!:matte-motes-shocked:
  16. Great informative post. Should add this to the wiki where it will not get buried under future posts.
  17. A while back I came across a freebie car near the vehicle sandboxes, it looked pretty well made but when driving it became obvious why it's a freebie. Later on I found this same car in Market Place at least a half dozen times at ever increasing prices. Makes me really hesitant of buying something on Market Place if I can't see it inworld in a long established store.
  18. Another possibility is land encroachment. Your house may have drifted over time out of your air space into a neighbor's, or likely the house was too big for the 20x20 lot, and an uncommunicative neighbor just AR'd it.
  19. The Ivory Tower fo Prims (or primitives) is a great inworld place to learn about building.
  20. Yea, I'd been avoiding this topic because I thought it was something like the talking pregnant bellies. I turned off jiggling body parts in my browser long ago as pretty much all the examples I saw seemed unrealistic and comical. In RL a lot of people go to the gym or the plastic surgeon when parts of their body start moving like that.
  21. Might try at the premium sandbox "Sandbox Mirificatio", the tall mound at the SW corner. That's were I picked up the furniture. Strangely that reminds me of a line from "Blast From The Past", something about a transgender prostitute offering patio furniture as a come-on.:smileyvery-happy:
