Linden Lab is looking for a Senior Product Manager to take SL beyond it's current state. The lab seems to expect the mobile app to bring in new people, but they need help to keep them engaged with the platform. They seem to understand they can't just depend on us old timers.

Which is the way to the future though? Can LL focus on both top notch graphics and a mobile app culture? Is fresh blood necessary or will an outsider not understand what makes SL work?

It is possible someone already at LL will get this position, as it is standard policy for companies to post jobs even if the best candidate will be an internal candidate.

I hope it won't be an outsider. I think SL users are just too weird to understand unless someone has been involved with this platform for years.

A very good question. Could an outsider understand the dynamics of what happen here? It's a fine line between attracting new users, and keeping the rest of us in what we know and expect.

LL should probably recruit someone from the porn industry. It's going to take a deviant to really understand what makes SL tick.

I like this bit: -  "Immerse yourself in Second Life to attain a deep understanding of the feature set and use cases and learn the culture by getting to know the user community".   Candidates should be encouraged to try that before applying.

Objection: -  You can bring a dog to the office but not a cat?  Equal opportunities for pets!  Miaow!

Curious things… candidate can work remotely but has to be in one of 15 states?

A friend once asked LL if  she could apply for a remote-working job despite living just the wrong side of the border from where the job was based, in a non-remote working state, and if not, why not.

LL explained to her that the tax laws in most US states mean that, if a business has even a single employee working from home there, the business becomes liable for that state's business taxes on all its operations everywhere, which is why they have to restrict the states from which they can recruit remote workers.

That is one thing I found interesting about the "long" job posting - "normal" job postings keep the "buzzword salad" to a minimum, so the poor job applicant has a clue.

In this case, I came to the conclusion that even though the title has the word "manager" in it, this is essentially a "Director" position (one lower than a VP). Which makes sense, since the "product" being managed is the main offering!

Could easily be the hidden Linden Lab slogan.

And a great requirement IMHO. That is THE way to allow yourself to think outside of the box.

From the position description: "Immerse yourself in Second Life to attain a deep understanding of the feature set and use cases and learn the culture by getting to know the user community." Obviously, experienced SL users would have a strong advantage here.

But I am wondering whether it would be better/smarter, given the impending launch of the mobile version of SL, to find somebody who *is* from outside Linden Lab, but experienced in mobile app tech/development, give them a crash course in SL, and bring a fresh and different perspective to the job.

Then again, I see this: "Promotion of the value of the core experience of Second Life to other parts of Linden Lab, and help ensure the Product leverages the ideas and resources of the larger organization." Again, someone who is already steeped in Second Life would have a strong advantage here, since they seem to be looking for an advocate. Somebody from outside would face a steep learning curve, an obvious challenge.

"Migration from JIRA to Github" - Yeah, I'll believe that when I see it. That's gonna be a whole job in itself!

"Cultivate collaborative and productive working relationships with a diverse group of internal stakeholders and embrace healthy conflict rooted in mutual respect and trust" - shrinking violets need not apply! 😜

"Remote roles based outside of our office can sit in any of the following 15 states: AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IL, MA, MN, MT, NH, NC, PA, TX, VA, and WA. We invite you to apply if you are able to live and work full-time in one of the states listed above." - cries in Canadian

"Not afraid to fail" sounds more a like a "life" approach, than one that works in a corporate environment. Too many failures, and it shows a person hasn't learned anything from them, and that person is out of work.

Sounds like they might be asked to read the forums.

It's Linden Lab. That's their default.

I read awhile back that some access to JIRA is restricted because of licensing issues.  (They'd need additional licenses for us end-users, or some rot.)

So, there may be actual financial reasons to move off JIRA.  And of course, financial concerns drive technology choices (see: AWS)...
