Gopi Passiflora
I was just wondering what would happen if I made a new account and added a criminal backstory to his profile - would I get in trouble with the Lab or the law? I'll paraphrase the backstory: This character is a blue-collar worker who was a compulsive gambler and blew all his money at the casino. To try to pay off his debts he tries to rob the casino but gets caught by the police and arrested. (I don't know if I should add that he happens to kill someone in the process or not - may make him too unsympathetic.) He does his time in prison and by the time he is paroled his is a reformed man. So basically an ex-convict story.
Kathlen Onyx
I don't see why. That's the whole point of Second Life is to be who you want to be. Unless you actually did these things in real life I doubt the police would be searching to investigate pretend accounts and checking to see if it was real. 3
Silent Mistwalker
People would either take it seriously or they'd see it as a roleplay account. LL says don't put anything into your profile (RL) you don't want others to know. All the cops can do is bark at you. There are no laws against writing fiction. 1
Gopi Passiflora
Thanks for the input guys, I guess it would be safe to do something like this.

Cruise through Crack Den RP region. Nearly everyone who RPs there has a.backstory in their profile. Many of them criminal in nature. If you can RP an alien, animal, robot, zombie in SL, you can certainly RP a criminal. I always saw myself as a serial killer if I were into RP. 😇 3 1
Akane Nacht
I've seen way worse. Anyway most people would assume you're just making it up. 1 1
Aiyumei
Several of my friends are with criminal background for roleplaying purposes. Some are thugs, some are burglars. You won't get in trouble for roleplaying a criminal. 1
Love Zhaoying
Having some visible "prison tattoos" and scars from prison fights may help with your backstory! Just an idea..
Stephanie Misfit
If you are writing a backstory for a roleplay character in your profile, you can make the distinction that it describes your character and not your real-life identity by writing "Gopi is a blue-collar worker", and not "I am blue-collar worker". 3

Ingrid Ingersoll
No, roleplayers do this all the time. But expect some hate if your criminal was involved in sex crimes, physical abuse, white supremacy etc. I would stick to white collar crime. 😉 3
Bree Giffen
How about writing that you have committed a lot of crimes but the district attorney just lets you go every time. I guess that wouldn't make you look that interesting. 2

I also want him to be sympathetic in some way.

PheebyKatz
I'm pretty sure most of what I've revealed of my RL misadventures of various illegal sorts just blows by people like so much fiction because their reality isn't wide enough to allow such things to enter the realm of credibility. As for my character, well, people often even know where I hide the bodies, and nobody's been able to do anything about me so far, so yeah, you probably can get away with being a mere ex-con. I won't think any less of you anyway, for what it's worth. Edited June 13, 2023 by PheebyKatz
