What would be too much of an "ick factor" ?

We all know that Second Life is kind of the wild west as far as what users can do and get away with.

What about when Linden Lab sponsors things though?

I think most of us think it's great it when they sponsor events such as Relay for Life or the Fantasy Faire, because even though they're getting a cut on all these linden dollar transactions, the ultimate goals are to raise money for good causes while also promoting creativity and creator content in Second Life.

We want them to encourage social activities in SL too, right? I think fairs, live music events, dances, and events in which we interact with Lindens and Mole are all good.

But how do folks feel about them sponsoring events or sims that might seem morally or ethically sketchy?

Would you be happy if they sponsored a virtual drinking contest? A wet T-shirt contest? A virtual nightclub with stripper poles?

A BDSM club? A club for Baby Girls and Daddy Doms?

What about a dating or adoption service? What about a brothel? Or a casino?

I think all these things seem acceptable when other users run them, but does this mean Linden Lab should run them too?

I'd probably draw the line at a "kissing booth" at a Fair.

Anything beyond that, and LL will be sponsoring "AFK" Telethons for charity.

Probably not OK with a "Nude Beach" unless it is like, for something similar to "World Nude Gardening Day", etc.

I thought LL already sponsored a Casino..ok, owns and advertises as Casino.

Adoption agencies are too close to "Prim Baby" nonsense.

Unfortunately, "Pet Adoption" could be weird really fast, too.  Maybe if they were some kind of "AI Shoulder Pets".

Ooh! A Mole and Linden "Auction" at a Fair (for charity), seems like something that could happen. Not for an "actual date", just for "bragging rights".

My favourite radio station has a dating service and that gives me the ick factor for some reason. I think it's because I personally just don't like dating services.

I'm still trying to get my head around Second Life advertising (running) a casino in world, even if the chips are free (except it seems they're not really).

I think they need to stick to the tame stuff that doesn't go over any potential legal boundary lines.

But then, as you point out in your first paragraph, there's plenty of stuff going on in Second Life that users are getting away with that blur/shoot over those lines, and you think, well, LL must know about it and must be OK with it.

To Love, the Kiss-a-Linden booths they used to have at Isle of View on Valentines used to be fun/funny, but understandably they changed all that malarkey to dunk-a-Linden booths (I think you can still hug 'em though).

Most old-time Fairs had both "kissing booths" and "dunking booths".  But in RL there's not many "kissing booths" anymore, I think.

I always like the memes / videos where there's a RL dog working at the "kissing booth"!

I think what we need is a "Psychiatric Help 5c" booth like Lucy had in Peanuts!

Bonus story: In junior high school, the school held a "sock hop" (during school hours!) where girls chased boys and kissed them, leaving them with lipstick marks.  I didn't get chased or kissed. I remember one "nerd" who did!  But today, that would definitely be ick.  ("Kids grow up too fast these days.")

Speaking of "ick", I've been thinking for awhile that the Helios Social Casino seemed like it was designed on a "Bring Your Kids to Work Day"..by the Kids! But back on topic, if LL sponsored a "bring your kids to SL day", that would DEFINITELY be "ick".

I think it is unwise for Lindens/Moles to involve themselves in any activities that can be done by residents. They should only do things that residents cannot do (e.g. supporting the platform, governance, etc.)

When they get involved in resident stuff, they deny residents the opportunity to do that stuff (e.g. running the birthday party) or they show favoritism (e.g. supporting one charity and not another).

I really wish they would focus on governance more and resident stuff less.

Yes, and.."G" rated can also lead to "ick".

Let's sponsor a "Back to School" Fundraiser! A "Toys for Tots" Campaign!  A "Shriner's Parade" in support of Free Children's Hospitals!

Anything to do with "kids" can be spoiled / ruined, because SL.

And "G" rating in the US is usually reserved for "Movies for the Whole Fam Damnly!"

Sowwy, cynical Lion is cynical.

The Casino and all of Bellisseria, including the BelliHub & BelliDemo Island and the all the Community regions, are all M rated.

They also have things in Zindra as well.. But I took it as content that they would be hosting as events not the land rating they were sitting on...

.. and anything we can't do represents a platform failure that needs addressing.

I'd take it a step back and caveat that there are some "basic functionality" things that "can" be done by residents but should be done LL. The marketplace (and caspervend, but when will that get integrated/improved?), basic meshbodies (NUX), basic land management (belli), search (Is websearch still broken...) etc. LL's implementations can be very debatable, but for the most fundamental things, "Buy a widget from XYZ for 1000 linden" shouldn't be the first answer.

Sexual depravity and debauchery is SL's economic niche. That's why SL has survived all these years. Sexual depravity is not allowed in Fortnite or Roblox, which keeps those platforms from driving SL into extinction. Almost anything of an adult nature goes in SL because that's what keeps the platform going.

It is their show. So LL can organize, preserve and sponsor whatever they think is worth it for them.
I don't care a bit and it is further none of my business.

That they came up with the Social Casino I found a bit strange and disturbing at first, but as long as I'm not forced to go there and play, I'm fine.
In RL I never talk about SL, so I have no worries about personal reputation damage by using SL.

The only thing that is important to me: Do I still enjoy SL enough to bother?
And as long as the answer is 'Yes' I continue to log in.
When the answer becomes 'No'  I stop logging in.
So far my answer is Yes most of the time.

No, no, no, no, no eww, no, no, and no. I think that covered all of @Persephone Emerald's examples?

Even the "casino" is too much of an ick factor for me.

This is very interesting, and I find that I feel the same way. Which raises the question, WHY do (most of us) feel that it's OK if Residents do these things, but not if LL does them?

I need @Scylla Rhiadra to jump in here and (once again!) explain my feelings to me.

It is all there in SL already or has been.
And we are still around, so no big deal in the end for us I guess.

We all somehow accept to live our second lifes in a partly perverted world.
So personally I could not care less if LL had a go with these things too.
