Pearl is a primarily feminine given name derived from the English word pearl, a hard, roundish object produced within the soft tissue of a living, shelled mollusk. Pearls are commonly used in jewelry-making.[1] The pearl is the birthstone for the month of June.[2] Pearls have been associated with innocence and modesty. Because it comes from the sea, it also has associations with the moon and with water.[3] Pearls are also traditionally considered appropriate jewelry for debutantes and brides.

I never knew that our login name would be used as anything more than just for a login!!! I had a couple of different display names for a very short while, and then I was just "Sextoy". Simply because I found it very kinky to introduce myself by saying: "Hi!!! I'm Sextoy!!!". Then I got involved with a Master, and he thought I should have two names. He called me Pearl, because he thought I was just beginning to come out of my shell. He "suggested" that I keep Sextoy as a last name to express what I am. I kept it because I liked it, and I've never met anyone called that in RL or SL. It's an interesting juxtaposition that pearls are associated with innocence and modesty.

I wasn't "working" back in those early days though.

There's actually more than a few people who use Sextoy in their display name.  At least I know I've seen some here and there.

for me pearl has the association with women of a not to define age (anymore) .. timeless people like queens and princesses above ...lets say carefull... above the age of 50/60.
The older european queens always seem to appear with a pearl set in daily life. ER ll, Marghareta, Beatrix ...a.s.o
Preferably a double row, resting on a huge front of..ehm.. high bond up buste with corset to keep everything in place  :)

Probably for the same reason as I did.

I recall you mentioning in another thread, I think, about not feeling you could go to other areas because of your name.  Or something like that.  If it were me, I'd have an elegant display name and then perhaps starting or joining a group that uses Sextoy as a tag.  That way, if you're not working, you'd have this lovely name and no one would be the wiser as to your profession.  SL is a vast place and you shouldn't let a simple thing such as an easily changed name get in the way of you feeling comfortable wherever you go.  How about Pearl Hollander after the famous hooker Xaviera Hollander, The Happy Hooker?  Just my 2 cents.

In addition to the sea, the moon, and Janis Joplin, when I think of pearls I think of one of my favorite scenes in a movie I just re-watched, Hidden Figures, where pearl necklaces are referenced. Great movie to realize the contribution of Black women to important accomplishments of the past, get a glimpse of the horrific Jim Crow era still ongoing in the 60's, and to get that YEAH FINALLY feeling when the boss realizes injustice and literally slams down the 'colored only' bathroom sign so his Black employee doesn't have to walk half a mile to find a bathroom she's allowed into. In the end, they gift her with the string of pearls necklace she complained about not being able to afford because they paid Blacks so much less:

I never thought @Bagnu is that bad of a name.  When someone pointed out that Bagnu is actually the name of a place in Italy, I think it's more cooler and fits quite well with the Resident last name.

I do want to point out that there are some curmudgeons who don't recognize display names.  That feature can be turned off in the viewer and they'll address everybody by their login/user names.

Something I will consider. It's not just my name though that makes me uncomfortable with that though. I would feel out of my element, just as I do, and am, here in the forums.

I just meant you'll miss a lot of what SL has to offer and an entirely different class of people if you were to venture out of your element.  It's been my experience that people are basically the same everywhere unless you're in a specific RP area such as a sex place or defined RP sim.  Live music venues are a great example.  Most people are just themselves as you could be.   No character to play but yourself.

some class wouldn't hurt though.

Coming from the person who earlier deployed the word "whore," twice, in one of Pearl's threads, in reference to women who choose to express their sexuality . . . I think I'll find someone else to establish the meaning of "class," thank you very much.

I define class not as a manner of dress or elocution, or deportment. Someone who has "class" to me is one who treats others well, and with respect.

Where I most often do not find it is in people who are overly judgemental about other people's lifestyle choices.

There are so many slang phrases dealing with pearls that are far from innocent. I mean, ZZ Top wrote a song about one of the more... infamous ones. I never heard of it being associated with innocence and modesty before now.

Yup, that was my thought when the whole "name" thing started in this thread. Pearl = the a small, sensitive, erectile part of the female genitals at the anterior end of the vulva (because I probably can't type the very acceptable anatomical word "clitoris" without getting **** ?) That's a VERY common slang. All things considered with this OP, I figured that was on purpose. I don't buy the whole "innocent cherub" routine.

Holy cats! a 19-page long wtf-is-it thread. Other threads get shut down and moved, and this glorified "lookit MEEEEEE!" thread is still here and going strong, and yes, I get my own irony of adding another post to it. She's so "out of her element!" poor thing, and yet... has more posts than many, many others. 19+ pages and still going strong. Bless your heart. (I lived in the South...)

I want to echo what Rowan here says so well . . .

SL has so much to offer. It's great that you've found a niche for yourself where you are comfortable; we all do that to some extent. But growing means stretching, and challenging yourself, and, on occasion, making yourself a bit uncomfortable by trying new things and taking on new challenges. You've done that a bit here, and that's great. And I think it's been a learning experience. I'm pretty sure if you take the same kinds of risks, exploring other faces of SL, you'll be rewarded.

The other thing that Rowan is right about is that RP is a "special" activity in SL, for the most part, bracketed by the way in most of us are consistently just ourselves. Be yourself, in a way that is both authentic, but also acknowledges others, and you'll do brilliantly.

Erm.

I admit, I didn't see the first post, where the word "whore" was used. But... in "Pearl's" threads? And Pearl is a paid sextoy? Escort? Does the virtual pixel bumping for $Lindens? (And photo opportunities?) If it was used in that way, then whore = prostitute. If it was used to mean that, then it was correct.

Oh c'mon, Kitty. You know the difference between connotation and denotation, and you know what a difference context makes.

"Whore" is a derogatory term that applies far more broadly than sex workers, and implies social scorn, and moral and ethical judgments. When you have the option to refer to someone as a "sex worker" or "prostitute," which are, relatively speaking, judgement-neutral terms, but choose to use the word "whore" instead (or in addition), you are making a conscious choice that, to me, makes you sound like some bible-thumping misogynist from the deep south who divides the gender into chaste Madonnas and wicked, corrupting whores.

The term is also sexist AF. We don't really have a male equivalent for it -- except, significantly, "manwhore" -- because, well, being "whorish" is a kind of woman's thing, isn't it?

If someone is RPing a "whore," that's a different thing -- but that's RP, and not the context in which this was used.
