Those are unicode characters.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unicode_characters

Hold down your alt key and type the numbers 0153 on the keypad (not the numbers on the top row but the 10-key pad on the side).  You should get ™
This only works for the first 1000 characters.  After that it gets complicated.

There are many many extended and accented characters in unicode plus characters used for other languages like Russian, Arabic, Korean, etc. They all have there own sections.  There are other oddities in there as well.       ⊈       and so on.

Very few fonts have characters for all the values.  Also, not all values are defined in the unicode table.  When ever something is unknown it gets printed as an empty box.   ▯

Usually the easy way is just copy and paste from one you have found somewhere else.   You might find these useful and they are kind of a pain to input with Alt+ method.  So copy then here and paste them in a note card in world.
①②③④⑤⑥⑦⑧⑨⑩⑪⑫⑬⑭⑮⑯

If you want to use some of these characters in your display name I suggest you have a cup of coffee   and think it over first.

As if............haha. Not enough time for shopping, let alone messing with the Alt key. A bridge too far for me.............9_9

Is that like calling everyone “Citizen”? Very egalitarian.

It's actually Comrade

In the late 19th century Russian Marxists and other leftist revolutionaries adopted as a translation of the word "Kamerad" the Russian word tovarishch (Russian: Товарищ) (from Old Turkic tavar ishchi; abbreviated tov.), whose original meaning was "business companion" or "travel (or other adventure) mate", deriving from the noun товар (tovar, i.e., 'merchandise').[7][8] as a form of address in international (especially German) Social Democracy and in the associated parts of the workers' movement. For instance, one might be referred to as Comrade Plekhanov or Comrade Chairman, or simply as Comrade. After the Russian Revolution, translations of the term in different languages were adopted by Communistsworldwide. As a result, even though many other socialists would continue to use "Comrade" among themselves (e.g., German and Austrian social-democrats and, to this day, members of the British Labour Party), it became most strongly associated in public consciousness with Communism as known in the Soviet Union. This is exemplified in its mocking use in stereotypical portrayals of the Soviet Union in Cold War films and books.

How do you make those dippy things in the first place? I'm running into those a bit more often than there are people that know unicode.

i think you can copy/paste them from anywhere, even another persons name.

there are also lists of unicode charactors, what they look like, and the keys combination to make them

When display names first became a thing...I got in trouble with a few venues, and loads of people, for calling everyone Bob.

People used odd characters in their display names, some of which I could actually read, some of which weren't recognizable on the particular system I was on at the time,  some I couldn't read..and some I just didn't want to read.

Some folks laughed it off or played along...many did not, and were not amused-ESPECIALLY women (stop being judgmental Tari!). I got a lot of complaints from people, from "owners" of the aforementioned butthurts, from folks I worked with and for at the time, and just folks that happened to be in the venue and thought...white knight time yipee!

Heh, I still did it, and still do, and it still drives people bonkers. But, in my defense, not that I need one, my vision is bad enough on it's own, you(general) making your name impossible to read is NOT my fault. Fix it, or I'm gonna keep on calling you Bob. If you don't wanna be called Bob, best to not interact with me at all :D

There are about 140 Thousand characters all together.  For anything above 0999(decimal), entering it from the keyboard requires some registry editing.  You will also need to know the hexadecimal code for that character.  Since you are going to be looking up the code anyway ... just copy and paste the character itself. :D

shin, the same letter that inspired Leonard Nimoy to the Vulcan_salute , here a shin with a dagesh - also leaving this letter out would be pretty antisemitic ;)

⊈ is the negation of  - leading me to revoke my former accusation of Rhonda being a mathematician...

the signs in unicode are there for a reason

I sometimes wish people would wear name tags in RL.  It would make life a lot easier.  Some days I can't even remember my own name. O.o

At least in RL we have face recognition, for whatever that's worth.  In SL, I can't recognize people unless I see their name tags -- until they start typing.

Your name is Rolig, which is Danish/Norwegian for calm and/or quiet.

I'm terrible with names. I work on it, but I've a loooong way to go. When I sense someone else can't remember my name, I'll sometimes throw them a life preserver during the conversation in the form of "Yeah, that reminds me of when Mom would say "Maddy, don't do (whatever the other person had mentioned that gave me the opening to toss the life preserver)".

I've found hair and clothing to be a more reliable means of identifying my SL friends than their faces.

Or, in Swedish, "funny," as in a funny story.  Being either calm or funny would be a great improvement for my RL avatar, so I am pleased to find a measure of both in SL.

And yes, hair and clothing are more reliable cues than faces in SL. Most people I know tend to rotate through a small, familiar wardrobe most of the time.  Almost like RL.  The old stuff just gathers dust in the closet.

I saw that translation too, and should have included it.

You may not think of yourself as funny, but you are certainly so. There's a li'l devil in you and I'm always on the lookout for a glimpse of it.

I think funniness is a function of timing more than anything else.  I have a terrible sense of timing in RL, so I miss my chances for a snappy comeback more often than not.  In SL, I have the advantage of typing, which slows everyone down -- and adds typos, which I am good at and which are also funny.  It's one of the many reasons why I have avoided using Voice for the past 11+ years, as do almost all of my friends.

The simple answer is that there is no point having your name over your head in a readable form it will still get written any way the other user pleases. Take mine 5 simple letters, in plain font. So far I have been Kandry, kangry, kanny, kenny .... in fact every possible mispelling far far more than I have been correctly named

/me nods

I wish it was a joke.

I have this theory ... inside my head there is this little being with many long arms sitting at a small desk surrounded by massive filling cabinets full of folders.  Each folder is a thought, feeling, smell or other subjective topic.  In each folder are sheets of paper, each with a word that describes some element of that folder That little being is my brain.  When talking, my brain rummages through the cabinets, drawers and folders with all of its many hands assembling the words into a sentence at a blazing speed.  It then ships off the stack of paper to the mouth.  The mouth says each word in order.

Only as I get older, sometimes that piece of paper is blank.  My mouth says everything up to then and ... nothing?  So it asks the brain, "Hey, this page is blank.  What word is it supposed to be?"
My brain replies "I gave you the sheet of paper."
"Yeah, but there is nothing on it?"
"What word do you need?"
"I need a word for <some odd feeling or a faded image>"
"OK, that's right here."

My brain looks in the cabinet/drawer/folder and ... nothing.

"Hmm, let me see if it was cross filed."

Long pause.

"Here, try 'acute.'"
"ACUTE?!  What the hell?"  That's no where near <some odd feeling or a faded image>."
"Oh .. I see.  It looks a lot like the right word."  My brain continues searching until it finds the word in a different section.
"The word is 'Rhonda.'  It was filed in the cabinet with sharp objects for some reason."
"Rhonda.  Yeah, that is almost the same as acute. If I had control of the eyes they would be rolling now."

Meanwhile the barista is looking at me with an odd expression somewhere between disbelief and pity.

Oh, that's certainly true for more than just humor. I lose 10-20 IQ points the moment I open my mouth.

People spell my name wrong too, and it's pretty simple, lol.

Try getting someone to pronounce it and they'll probably get it wrong then too.  I learned not to sweat it :)

It's actually 'citizen'. You were mistaken.

In films, people are referred to as 'citizen' in France, following the French Revolution. I've no idea if the word (french version) was used like that at the time though. So I assume that Love was thinbking France and not Russia.
