  1. If you want a club for your own enjoyment, then by all means have one, but don't expect to make any money on one. Far from it, clubs are money pits. You need something else there to generate income to offset the expenses. You will never get enough tips and donations to cover that. That's why you see so many mini malls at clubs. The difficult part of that though, is that with the economy the way it is, there are far fewer people that want to rent. Many big name designers have cut back to a main store only. Also, clubs take a LOT of work to run right. Finding reliable staff and overseeing them will take a lot of time. Good managers are gold, but, no matter how good your managers are there are always things only the owner can handle. You will need to work hard to keep interest up and keeping people coming back no matter how successful it is to start , or people will move on to the next big thing. I've owned two successful clubs in SL, one a rock club, the other a big name ballroom, and both were almost a 24/7 job for me to keep in the top five, even though I had full staffs and business partners to help. You can't rely on contests to build traffic. My experience with contests is that they do attract people, but over half are people that come for your cash and don't tip, don't put anything in club donation jar and don't shop. Live music can be a big draw, but can also be expensive if you have it regularly. Learn all you can about what causes lag and control the things that you can control as tightly as you can. No matter how nice the club is, people will leave if its too laggy. Unless you are getting a sim for it (the best way) keep in mind that no matter how well you run your parcel what your neighbors do will have an effect on yours. I don't want to discourage you from your dream, but think carefully about it before diving in. There are tons of empty clubs around SL. A good business plan is essential. Figure out your target audience and make sure the build and surrounds will appeal to them Don't try to be all things to all people either in the theme or in the type of music you play there. Decide on a music format and make your DJ's stick to it. The more thought and research that you put into it before you spend a linden, the better off you'll be.
  2. Yes, create a group which you both are owners. Then each person buys a lot and contributes it to the group. The first 512sqm of land you contribute will be tier free anything above that you will be billed for and be responsible for paying. You can also create the group and buy land FOR the group. Here is a link that explains how to do either of these things.
  3. If you are a premium member you can go to live chat to talk to somone about this. Unfortunately, if you are not premium - basic account support is very limited . You can only file a suport ticket for the choices you are given when filling out a ticket. First check to be sure you see your friend as an owner in the group. Next, make sure the land in question is deeded to this group. If one of these things is not true, that's the problem.
  4. It will appear in your PayPal account when PayPal receives the money and posts it. This can take up to five business days or more from the date LL says they have finished processing the request.
  5. It sounds to me like she was NOT authorized to do it. What her legal problems may be will depend on you, LL, and possibly the credit card company and who files charges.. I imagine if you are willing to pay, it may effect the decision. But if not, then she did commit fraud against LL and they or the credit card company may take steps against her, even if you don't. You may also be forced to do this if you don't want to pay her bill. Many credit card companies require you to report unauthorized use to the authorities before they will let you out of paying. She may be suspended from SL or may be banned, regardless or in addition to any RL legal issues she has. LL takes fraud seriously. You may face a problem too as it is against TOS to share an avi with someone and that is what you are doing when you give out your password.
  6. I have no objection to the marketing of SL to facebook users. If LL wants to offer a facebook like interface than fine. BUT it should have been done as a choice to OPT IN, not by default with limited opt out options. Not everyone in the world likes facebook or wants to participate in anything like it. I think why people are mostly upset is that they weren't aware of the feature and didn't like that no one asked them if they wanted details of their SL spread all over the web. No one asked them if they wanted followers and when they got them and didn't want them, there was no way to get rid of them. Its an issue of communication. LL didn't make it widely known what they were doing or consult their existing customers about what the options should be.
  7. LL does not for the most part create the content of the game. Other players do. Some do it as a hobby, other's do it to make RL money, and some even do it as a RL job. LL has no control over the price of things inworld. It is up to the creator to set the prices because they legally "own' the rights to the items they create. There is a lot of free things available in world as most content creators are generous enough to offer a few. However if LL all of the sudden made everything 'free' many creators would stop creating and withdrawal all their content leaving SL almost an empty land. LL also has limited control over the price of lindens too as they are traded between players on a money market. The price is based on supply and demand. If you can't afford to buy Lindens, you may want to consider getting a job in SL to earn them OR learning a skill so you too can create content or offer a service which people will pay you for.
  8. A snapshot is a texture already and can be applied to a prim the same way. If this is not what you mean, please clarify.
  9. As a new benefit, premium members now have sole access to certain sandboxes. Apparently since mesh is no longer confined to certain sims LL took the sandboxes that were dedicated to mesh when it was beta still and converted them to premium members only.
  10. There are lots of places where people voice about all manner of things. Perhaps if you told us more what your interests are or what kind of conversation you'd like people could offer you some names of places.
  11. LOL, i had the same thing happen a couple times and managed to detach it.
  12. LL recognizes that this is a problem. That's why land owners, not just estate owners, now have access to information that shows script use on their land and the server resources its using. Eventually script server usage will be allocated among parcels in proportion to the size of the parcel, much as prims are allocated now. On private estates it is the estate owner that would be the authority here. Unless you own land on the sim, you really have no 'legal' standing and LL is probably not going to get involved with it. On the mainland, perhaps they would. However the only category in the AR that comes close is Land - abuse of sandbox resources.
  13. The majority of people want copy/mod clothes. To say that sales would increase substantially if a choice were offered is just not true. A merchant has to weigh the economics of it. The extra time spent changing the perms on a set of clothes, loading an extra prim and creating /putting the texture on it could be used to create more merchandise which is much more profitable. Also prims cost money. It may not mean double prims for the entire store, but to offer everything in a choice would require two prims for each set of clothing where only one is needed now. This could be a substantial amount and would further cut into the profit margin of the merchant because they'd need more land or would have to offer LESS choice to the MAJORITY of their customers, as they couldn't put out as many things for sale. Even if they were willing to do this, they number of sales of transferable clothes would be small. You can not compare the economics of RL stores to SL stores. No where is land bought or rented in RL based on the number of pieces of things you put on it. Many designers also don't want to sell transferable clothes either. People would mod them, mess them up and then sell them to some unsuspecting person who would then think that that designer does not do quality work. You may be a whiz at moding things, but most people aren't. That's one reason why resize scripts are used so much now. The great thing about this is that everyone is free to make a choice. The merchant is free to choose where to spend their time and tiers toward creating things and greater earnings, and you are free to only shop in places that offer the options you want. If you are in the minority you just have to accept that your choices are more limited. To call merchants lazy or the other things you have stated, only because they don't want to accommodate everyone's preferences, is not fair to the many hard working creators in SL. Do you do this in RL when you go and can't find a sweater in a store in the exact size and color you want it to be? No, you go to another store.
  14. Never knew or heard of LL giving refunds for anything. SInce you've paid for it might as well remain a premium member and then downgrade right before the next premium payment is due.
  15. I have reservations about it also, but will wait to see what the procedure will be and what other security/assurance they offer. One of the biggest issues I have with it, other than the one you mentioned, is that my inventory frequently doesn't load fully Weekends in particular are very bad for this as I frequently am missing 30 percent or more of my inventory. A number of other content creators that I know that have large inventories have this issue too. Perhaps if the marketplace can draw from a special folder ONLY and inventory loading isn't an issue, then it will be ok. If it works well, then it will solve a lot of delivery issues that result from the sim where your magic box is rezzed being down.
  16. Welcome back to Second Life. You can find a lot of free things on the marketplace. Just search in Apparel On the side bar, click $0-$10 then the Refine button. Sort the results by Price - low to high. In world you will find a number of places that specialize in free items. Type Freebies in search and a number of places will come up. The quality of the items will vary. A lot of merchants give away free items or 'gifts', that are as high a quality as the clothes they sell. You will have to go to their stores to get them though. I don't have a list of these places, but perhaps other people can post some names or SLURL's for you. While it is possible to obtain an entire wardrobe "free" like this, it will take a lot of time and effort on your part, and the selection will be limited if you want high quality. You also may not find exactly what you want. Consider finding a job to earn money to buy exactly what you want if you can't afford to purchase Lindens.
  17. OMG you mean your don't want to know when someone you know clips their toenails?
  18. If you are buying a full sim, look on the secondary market. You can get one far cheaper than the $1,000 US the lindens charge. You can also rename it and move it to another location at the time you buy it for no extra charge. There is a transfer fee when a sim, including full estate rights, is transferred to another person. It is $150US. Sometimes that is included in the asking price and sometimes not, Just be sure to ask. You can also negotiate the price with a motivated seller. Also take into account how much tier is prepaid. Ask what date the tier comes due next because that's when your first tier will be due. A sim with the tier paid a few weeks in advance may be a better deal than one with the tier due in a few days. Add up the total cost to determine which is better - Price, transfer fee if this is seperate and you have to pay rather than the seller, and how soon tier is due. Finally, a seller may claim that their sim is 'grandfathered' and the tier is less than the standard one. It used to be true that grandfathering transferred to the new owner, but as of January of this year that was changed. Some grandfathered sim owners are not aware of this. So plan on paying the $295US a month rate regardless of what your told. To find a sim for sale, check these forums. There are also several groups you can join in world for people buying and selling sims. Look in classifieds, and also land search. You want the ad or land description to read 'full estate rights transferred' or something similiar. Don't jump at the first one you see unless you know its a great deal. Always check all your options first to get the best deal.
  19. For someone that is only a few days old your goal is unrealistic. Most employers require you to be 30 days old or more and have a good looking avatar. Even once you can offer those things, unless you work a lot and get a lot of tips, that's still more than you can consistently earn without some valuable skill that is in demand or making content or offering a service that is popular and people would be willing to pay for.
  20. No matter how a copy is made, its still a violation of IP rights and against the TOS and DMCA. I've had DMCA take down's done on items that people built themselves but clearly copied a build i did.
  21. You can't copyright a name but you can trademark it, which gives most of the same protections.
  22. You should have immediately reported this to the Lindens and given them the UUID number for the item so they could trace how that happened and disipline the right person. Not only was someone guilty of copybotting, but they were using your name illegally too. I for one would have filed an AR immediately just for using my name without my permission. The fact that you didn't, and actually wore the hair, regardless of the reason, is reason enough for the creators actions. If what you say is true, then you should be able to appeal your ban successfully. As far as the ban from the store, you have no absolute right to go on any land you do not personally own. A landowner may ban you for any reason or none at all, even if the land is public access land. They aren't even required to tell you why or that you've been banned. I for one would not support any change to this policy. If I am paying for land, I should be able to choose who I want or don't want on it. Anyone that disagrees with this is welcome to pay my tiers for me. :smileywink:
  23. On a private estate, the estate owner can do what they want. If its a landowner and not the estate owner doing it, they it depends on the covenant. On the mainland it varies, Some regions have no covenant and some do. You have to read the rules in the covenant, if it has one. I tried to find something in the knowledge base about for sale signs in general, but couldn't find anything. LL did outlaw ad farms, which were 16sqm lots that people used to have that were for putting up ads and showing in search only. You can't even parcel off a small lot anymore and put it in search unless its at least a 512 I believe and that's how its enforced, not through a covenant. That appears to be signs for land that is for sale and technically not an ad farm. So, it may be legal depending on the sim where it is.
  24. In addition to being a RL violation. if they don't have written permission in a legal form that is acceptable to the Linden's,its against TOS too. However, LL sure doesn't go out of their way to enforce it unless they get a complaint because I see people all over SL using RL products brand names or thinly veiled variations, which is also against LL official policy. Personally I don't think its worth the risk of LL doing a take down if they decided to enforce it, or RL legal problems.
  25. As far as I know all trackers can only tell you if someone is online and/or where they are if they are on THE SAME SIM as the person doing the tracking. Just like radar can tell you who is on a sim and where they are. Tracking between sims requires that a scripted object be attached to the avatar being tracked. It is illegal to attach anything to another avatar without their consent and any product that did this would be pulled by the lindens. It is against the TOS to stalk another person as its considered harassment. If you think that this following has risen to the level of stalking you can file an abuse report for violation of TOS. You could also file a complaint if you find something that is attached to your avatar that you did not attach or give permission to attach. If AL finds there is a violation, the person will receive anything from a warning to cease, a suspension, or a ban from SL. If the violation is not considered to be serious and the person has a clean record, they will get a lighter sentence than someone that commits a serious violation or continually violates the TOS.
