  1. I equally like summer and winter. I dislike the transition seasons. As someone who lives on a beach summer is the best, winter is fun as well. Spring is just, cold and rainy, and fall is also cold and rainy.
  2. I brought this up in a different thread before, and @ChinRey explains it well as well. A lot of games are heavily optimized to look great but be very minimal behind the scenes. Take a look at GTA V for example, its a beautiful looking game, lots of detail, explosions, nice lighting effects, all nice and pleasing to the eyes. And it runs well on just about anything nowadays. My Athlon 5350 and 750ti can hold 40-50fps in 1080p on Normal/High settings in that game. But on SL im struggling to get over 35fps in the majority of places on normal/high settings. How can that be? SL doesnt look any better, in some cases it looks a lot worse than GTA V does. Well, in GTA V you dont render what you dont see. In SL, if its in your view distance you render it. You render all of it, every face, every triangle, every edge and the vertices. In GTA V the avatars are all based on the same skeleton with slightly different low poly meshes, their detail is dependent on their textures. Textures are much easier to deal with than extremely complex meshes, which SL has a lot of. The Skybox isnt dynamic, its basically a slideshow, lighting effects are minimal compared to what you get in SL, theres a lack of detail when you look closely like buildings having decals for windows, sidewalks are a matter of maybe 30 varieties of "sections" across the entire map, theres maybe 10 different pine trees, the vehicles are low poly like the people and rely on textures, and most importantly, theres not a whole lot going on in the background. You got cars driving around, they render in one spot and derender when theyre out of sight, same with people, birds, whatever. Water is pre-animated, rain only makes puddles in select places. Games like that look good because they have this painted on mask that makes them look seamless. But the effects really arent anything advanced or complex. Think of it like taking a plate of plain white rice and adding some vegetables and sauce. Really its just rice with vegetables and sauce but if you dress it up right it can look like a really complex meal. Put it on a fancy plate, paint fancy lines with the sauce, get out the good napkins, etc. SL is like creating a complex meal and serving it on a blank white plate with paper napkins. Theres like 2 dozen ingredients involved, it took an entire team of chefs and a couple of hours to make it. And it looks pretty good but you dont get the fancy presentation. But theres so much more to the actual meal. My crapbox PC happily plays GTA V, Fallout 4, CSGO, Skyrim, Metro 2033, Cities Skylines, and theyre all great looking games that all perform well, but SL doesnt because its just a very different game in how it actually runs.
  3. Mate, ill trade a pair of X5675's for a year of Premium, theyre just sitting in "the box of crap i cant find a motherboard for", lol But, probably time for an upgrade, just in general. Dual Xeon stuff is fun and all but even a GPU upgrade is probably a must from any 600 series card in 2017. You can grab 980/980ti's on ebay for 300-350$ now, or wait for the next launch form AMD/Nvidia and buy a current gen card that someone drops for the cheap in order to buy the newest gen. Thats how i got my old 280x's when i still had those, when the 300 cards came out i found 4 of em on ebay for ~100$ each. @Solar Legion, nononononono, lets not even get farther into this, i can tell you the human eye can notice the difference between 30, 60, 75, 120, 144, even 240hz. Ive seen that 480hz 1080p monitor ASUS displayed at CEX, even that is pretty noticeable compared to 240hz. That whole "your eye cant see over XYZ framerate anyway" is complete bullcrap, the way your eye perceives things is not like a monitors refresh rate. Also 1080p 120/144hz is becoming more common. Many basic 1080p TV's are even 120hz nowadays. But just in general to your comment, this goes to show theres a point in SL where performance is going to peak. You have a 4790k and a 980 and youre pushing 30-60fps. I have an Athlon 5350 and a 750ti and im pushing 20-35fps in most places, on mostly high settings just the same. Though i usually drop advanced lighting when in more populated places. I imagine going much further isnt going to net much more performance, ive seen posts from those with 7700k's and 1080ti's not even managing 60fps in some sims.
  4. They were just the examples i had on hand. I know that some of them may not have had the intention of the others, but its a very common thing. If someone sends me a "hi", ill happily have a little conversation about whatever, ive got no problem talking to random people or helping out the newbies in SI. And that happens fairly often. But i do get a lot of these messages that are just kind of obscene and not called for in both a general sim or something you would just say to anyone anyway. You dont just walk up to someone and go "hey, wanna go bang? meet me at XYZ", like no mate, go away. The point was that the random IM's are still coming even with a furry avatar, theres very little social discrimination in SL from most people, i rarely see it. These people dont care what weird crap i do, even if their goal is virtual casual hookups, they arent picky or selective or discriminating. And part of me can admire that, but maybe if it was about something other than wanting to grope pixels, ya know? Semi related to the OP topic, another disappointment in SL was after i came back from like a 4 year break, at the time i wanted to play SL but my laptop wasnt up to the task. But at the time i played as an A-10 warthog and ran around going "brrrrrt". And it was a blast, and a load of people were doing this, and it wasnt even considered trolling or anything, it was just that some people liked to mess around with random avatars for fun. And after making my new account last year, i have almost never seen that again. What happened? Why arent people doing this kinda casual fun? Sometimes i see people with those dropkick anims or whatever, and sometimes funny macros, or the mlg 420 illuminati avatars, but not as much. Where did that kind of thing go in the last few years, just a bunch of noobs running around with whatever random avatar they found in a sandbox having a blast. I mean i know its there, somewhere, but it use to be everywhere. Also pet peeve, anyone who calls me and sabrina foxes. We aint foxes >:l
  5. Highest ive seen is ~560k or something, well over 500k. Oddly the guy just looked like a fairly normal dude, nothing crazy added to his avatar or anything. Highest complexity i reach is like 45k, sometimes a bit higher if i wear a hat or something.
  6. We're all weird people on this semi obscure virtual life game. If someone has a problem with what you're doing, who cares lmao. Just block em and move on. I can say that in the year ive been here, ive never gotten any flak for being a furfag. Even when i was new and had a free avatar and everything. In fact i think that to the average newbie its an appealing thing, ive had people ask me how to get furry avatars, where to look for them in the catalog, stores and makers, etc. I still get load of annoying little PM's from people who barely speak English trying to hook up with me (even though i have a listed partner on my profile >:L) with "obvious desires". And these are just the ones still in my logs. Pretty much any time im in Social Island i get a bunch of these, not so much elsewhere. But ive never had someone send me a PM with "yiff in hell furfag" or anything like that, not even once. Ive hardly even had people ask me about it in any kind of casual conversation. Its SecondLife ya know, theres a whole bunch of weird people here. You got me as a red panda, next to me is a person playing as a small raptor, another guy is a robot, someone dressed as Captain Kirk, vampires, werewolves, even a dude who plays as an actual Dog to the extent that ive never seen the dude chat anything other than "barks". The only thing that keeps those people going are reactions, and on SL you wont get many reactions anymore. Older playerbase, if you want to annoy furries and start a flame war or whatever, go to IMVU where its dominantly teens who have a victim complex.
  7. Did something similar on Social Island ALM on with no shadows gives ~20-25fps ALM With shadows drops that to 12-15 with extreme variance. Howver, dropping shaders, transparent water and reflections entirely brings me a decent 31-34fps Going absolute minimum actually causes a decrease in FPS (lol)
  8. Ive got an Athlon 5350, 750ti and 16gb of DDR3 and SL still runs for me at around 20-30fps in 1080p on general medium/high settings. The big FPS killer is Advance lighting, transparent water, advance shaders, etc I usually play with a draw distance of 64 unless im in more open spaces, and i keep ALM off unless in more basic places like Social Island where i can run with ALM on and hold 30fps. But places like New Citizens Incorporated where you got a lot of people condensed into a small area, i keep ALM settings off because otherwise i drop down to 10fps.
  9. A lot of furry avatars are built on their own thing because getting some parts to sync up with popular mesh bodies isnt an easy task and they might be kind of limiting. Furry avatars may or may not be more or less humanoid, which can be difficult to accurately produce modifying a regular human body. In any sense the same kind of clothing/avatar relationship still exists within that circle of avatar creators. Many clothing stores like Apricot Paws sell items for everything from the Kemono and DSD bodies to the Bifrost bunny. Same as many clothing makers sell items for Maitreya, Slink, Belleza, etc. And to top it all off, a lot of furry avatars are not really updated anymore though they are still very popular. DSD's fox is a good example, its not a full mesh avatar. It still relies on alphas and can wear a variety of clothing but its from like 2013 i think. Compared to a newer one being their Red Panda which is full mesh, but the mesh is its own thing, its not 100% compatible with other DSD compatible clothing, theres a few things that are listed specifically as being compatible with the Red Panda but not other DSD avatars. So maybe we'll see unification, maybe some kind of body conversion kits or whatever so you can comfortably wear clothes for a Slink body while using a DSD body, or clothes designed for a DSD body while wearing a Slink body. Care to elaborate on this? Presumably with a proper mesh body you could wear just about anything short of layer clothing, which i think you can still wear somehow but i never bothered to learn how appliers work.
  10. I can't remember what specific thing can do this, it has something to do with the way lighting and shading is rendered. I use to have it happen to me in a variety of games because of a really crappy Radeon 7770 that never knew how to handle any kind of complex lighting. This mainly happens to older cards, so i don't know how old your laptops graphics chipset is but I don't think its that old if it runs SL.
  11. found a shirt i like, the alpha is terrible and non-modify, so i just wear a slightly larger size that juuuuust covers everything EXCEPT this one spot on my arm
  12. Why are we comparing SL to Skyrim? Theyre two incredibly different games that work in very different ways. And its not like Skyrim is the pinnacle of modern gaming technology, its based on an old engine where the supposedly great physics interactions are actually incredibly sub par. What does SL need specifically to make it any better. All I see here is complaining and a poorly thought out comparison to an RPG from 2011.
  13. DCMA reports have to be faxed for many businesses because its a legal document and physical copies on paper may be a legal requirement. Now of course they can just print an email or a sent .pdf but in some cases their lawyers simply may not accept it. If its a serious issue, which yours presumably is, they would contact you through other means, which they have offered. It could also be that they just dont have many requests like that and simply havent upgraded that system since... 2003 maybe. I mean many businesses still use Fax today because its more secure than file sharing over the internet, from my time in CNC i know that almost all of our business orders and financial stuff was done via fax machine because neither us nor our customers trusted email services or file hosting otherwise for that kind of important information. And theres not really too much of a reason to change it, places like UPS stores do Faxing and you can do it from your phone for free depending on your mobile carrier i think, hell i have an office supply store like 2 blocks away that still does fax machine repairs. And i think LL can actually delete all copies of the items and refund the buyers, im pretty sure ive heard of that happening before. tl;dr its probably either a legal requirement or just their standard practice

Ah alright then, that makes sense on firestorm. Ive heard from other FS users that their ram usage is much higher.

Its not an issue with your hardware, its just a problem caused by using multiple viewers. I get the same thing sometimes, lags out my whole PC but most of the time it runs smoothly, and im on a mere Athlon 5350 and a 750ti. Your computer is fine for SL, dont stress it. I would disagree with this, unless youre in some incredibly taxing sim, most of the time on Windows 8.1 im only using 900mb to 1.5gb on my viewer. And thats even for more laggy sims like shopping centers or clubs. On linux you can drop that down to 500mb-1gb or even 300mb in some spaces.
  16. You might enjoy this then. VIC-20 video as Part 2 of The 8-Bit Guy's series on Commodore History
  17. I have a fairly low/mid tier PC and SL runs fine. And ive run it on extremely low end hardware as well. SL doesnt take much to run but its not as lightweight as other social avatar games like Smallworlds or IMVU. If you have a fairly modern laptop with a decent dual core in it even integrated graphics will do you fine. Server lag is measurable, and in most sims its minimal. Yes its there, but its really that not bad when you consider all thats going on in some sims and the amount of people connected to it. Not to mention ive never seen a "linden labs yearly audit" to find out how much they spend on servers. I dont think anyone has, and id say your assumption that SL spends the minimum they can on server costs is probably just that, an assumption.
  18. Something tells me that a driver update wont do much. "This is unacceptable LL! How can a laptop clearly made in 2003 not run your game from 2003! What do you mean my graphics drivers are outdated, theyre not from 2002 are they???"
  19. lets see if this here high end laptop from 2003 can play secondlife secondlife is from 2003 right? my g40 was a really nice machine in 2003 it should run fine
  20. I actually asked a few friends on facebook about this, the food cleanliness laws only apply to the real food. Pixel bacon is bacon as much as tofu bacon is bacon according to a Jewish friend of mine. In relation to OP's issue, cant you just like, delete it? Theres nothing forcing you to wear it or anything like that. I get those stupid bite requests all the time and those people that latch onto you. Usually in SI theres this one dude who "kills" vampires though and thats always funny to watch.
  21. Im still living that life today. Picked up my IBM PS/2 Model 30 for 10$ thinking it would be fun to clean up, turned out to work just fine. They dont make em like they did in 1987. So im looking for 8 bit ISA expansion cards that could be fun to use, this machine was the dawn of VGA but its just VGA text only mode onboard, thinking of getting a proper VGA card and maybe some networking stuff to use it as a dummy terminal to view the web via w3m or links2 on a linux machine. I use to have a PC/XT with a Hercules card in it, fun for old DOS based drafting software like DESI-III that supported Hercules modes, sold that a few years ago to a collector. This is definitely off topic.
  22. Alright, then you entirely kill the entire current rental market, even skyboxes are like a minimum of 50L$ a week. And if you can earn those lindens, why would anyone buy lindens? Spend a bit of time virtually fishing to get free money to not starve or die of sleep deprivation or whatever. There would be no reason to buy lindens to support your character if the support you need is that cheap. I dont know why people try and take SL and turn it into a facebook game.
  23. My aim to provide someone information without leaving them asking more questions.
