  1. I think this person is looking into this idea a bit too much. This is secondlife, you can be literally anything. Male, female, transgender, some kind of gray area between two other genders, parts of several different genders, you can be an ungendered cube, a car, you can unironically sexually identify as an AH-64 Apache Attack Helicopter. Just because the "base" of the game is centered around Male and Female doesnt mean theres any exclusion for anyone else who doesnt identify with the binary. Its that 99% of people are Male, or Female. They dont identify as anything else. LL isnt going to stick up a big thing at the start that says "pick one: male / female". Because its not important, you can customize your avatar however you like to be whatever you like. Nothing created by LL is restricted to one gender or another. Theres plenty of user created content thats obviously only meant for one or the other, but its not like you cant wear it, it just wont work well because its not designed for it. There isnt a lulu sweater like mine for male avatars, its female, its got a more petite fit and breasts. But that wouldnt stop people from putting it on a male avatar, that just means you now have more curves on your otherwise manly physique. And thats not LL's fault, thats the fault of the content creator. But even then, there is no real "fault", its not a problem, they are not required to make gender neutral clothing, they make what they want to make and market it to who they want to market it to. They talk about the starting avatars like thats the end all be all of your SL experience, like opening a tin of mixed nuts and only seeing the plastic film inside. In particular the thing with the horses. Its possible to mess around with things to get a female avatar to ride on the male avatars horse with the male avatars animation. And yes its difficult. But its not important at all, you can go get other horses, you can go get other avatars, you can go get other animations entirely. LL has it set up like that because its simple, for new users to work with it. You wanna see a game where gender really is restricted to the binary? Check out Smallworlds some time, its a isometric social avatar game, but EXTREMELY limited in what you can do with avatar customization. Much of the clothing and avatar customization options are bound to if you have a Male or Female avatar. You cannot have a female avatar with male hair, you cannot have a male avatar and wear (most) female clothing. They have different "voices" and the game is filled with binary gender content. Not saying its a bad thing, tbh i hardly care about this kinda stuff, its kind of annoying when the female hoodie was really cheap but the male one was really expensive and restricted to VIP users but whatever.
  2. Have you done a client disable? Go to Advanced > Show Debug Settings and type in playChatAnim and set it to False Then type in playTypingAnim and set that to false too
  3. Man and i thought my Intel 8086 at 8.16mhz was slow.
  4. I honestly got no idea why you'd be getting 15-25fps, your specs are phenomenal for SL, especially that 4820k. Ive got a Athlon 5350 and integrated R3 graphics and the thing handles SL on medium settings at 1080p to get similar results. You're not running in a ridiculous resolution or something are you? 390x should handle 4k but you'd probably see those framerates on any settings in 4k due to vram limits in some viewers. When running SL, monitor your CPU and GPU usage to see whats going on. The 4820k will be hardly used because SL doesnt really take advantage of multiple cores that well, but your GPU should be seeing a solid 50% usage on max settings. Otherwise i suggest just testing a variety of different GPU driver versions. I would also recommend upgrading from Windows 7 SP1 to something newer, 7 is nice and all, but with 8.1/10 you get a lot of more modern features for the LGA 2011 platform that will benefit CPU performance.
  5. I always find series names fun. Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge, Broadwell, Haswell, that weird Devils Canyon thing, Skylake, Kaby lake, Coffee lake, up next is Ice Lake i think? AMD is weirder, they name everything after construction equipment. Piledriver, Bulldozer, etc. Except for the odd random offshoots that dont get those names, like the APU's, such as my athlon 5350 which is "kabini". Their graphics cards get a whole load of weird naming schemes too, scroll down to Features Overview: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units To tl;dr my previous post. 8700k isnt worth it, there is no future upgrade plan on z370, wait for the next generation or buy into AM4 now
  6. Its not a super router, these kind of projects are home routers and they do a good job at that. And enterprise equipment is just consumer pats in a fancy case. Once you get out of ultra small proprietary devices, rackmounts and lager desktop/"closetboxes" are just standard PC components inside. Costs me less than 100$ total, though granted many people may not have a spare HDD lying around or anything like that. But the most expensive component is finding a mini itx case you like, mines in a Cooler master Elite 110, which is 30 bucks. A combo of an ECS Kami-l and the sempron 2650 was around 40$, 2gb stick of ddr3 i got off craigslis for 5 bucks and the PSU was a similar story. Network card was found on newegg for 10$ with a coupon during a sale, normally only 35$ though so not bad, and the HDD as i said i had lying around. Ubuntu server is free. It also doesnt take much messing around at all. Since it such a simple build its very easy to get up and running, ubuntu server is very easy to install, as is pfsense. It holds a decent 1200-1300mbps down and 900-1100 up for sabrinas PC, though she has a dedicated network card and im using integrated where i hold ~700/450 It performs vastly better than our comcast router did, and our previous hodgepode of random network equipment on a decent netgear c3700. I never said i was a professional. i know what hardware offloading is, and its not complicated, this is why you use SOC platforms like AM1 for these kinds of things, as everything is integrated in hardware onboard the processor, its not emulating the network i/o, it has its own separate network chipset. This is also a moot point when you take into account a dedicated network card, which is itself "hardware offloading". Why replace the whole thing when you can change from a 1gbps network card to a 10gbps one for cheaper Ive messed around with it, its not particularly stable, i used pfsense specifically because of its large community backing and good stability You keep pushing this thing and linked me off to the edgerouter site for their explanation of hardware offloading, you sound like youre shilling for ubnt. Like, very poorly advertising almost. For a home router option, if your current router isnt enough, which for 99 percent of people whatever your ISP gives you is fine, then you need to move to one of two things: 1) Very high end routers like a whole household google network system, a netgear nighthawk of some sort or one of those ASUS ROG "gaming routers", which despite being a networking meme, do perform very well 2) A home built network box, theyre very effective at their job and can cost a decent bit less then high end network solutions. If you need more than that you need something beyond just a home router anyway.
  7. Your performance benefit is going to be minimal for SL. Because SL doesnt really take advantage of multiple cores that well, you're not gonna see the benefits of 6 cores over 4 https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=2275&cmp[]=2565&cmp[]=3098 Note the extremely similar single thread rating. The 8700k's big score boost is that it has two more cores, but not much of anything else. Your best bet for a performance upgrade is an overclock if you havent already. I would not suggest upgrade to coffee lake, its a dead end platform. Intels next big thing is supposedly going to be a 10nm process, and whatever new processors are made in 10nm will not physically work in Z370 LGA 1151 boards. Even if they did release yet another skew on the same architecture as Coffee Lake in the future, the performance benefit of going from the 8700k to whatever the new top end would be, would also be incredibly minimal. I suggest looking into AMD Ryzen 7 series stuff if you want things like DDR4 memory and more pcie lanes, m.2 and all that. That has a bit more of a future with Zen2 intended to be released on AM4 and work with existing X370 chipsets. Also the term is Ghz, not gig. Gig refers to gigabytes for memory, Ghz is giga-hertz, a measurement of clock speed.
  8. Ya say that but we all know what happened to Google Glass. AR is cool but the actual uses are pretty slim. I think only doctors really use it as basically a HUD for their patient's stats like blood pressure and all that when doing surgery.
  9. to elaborate more on what bigmoe said, its not that SL's user arent running powerful PC's, its that VR is not a pleasant experience at under 120fps you get motion sickness super fast at even 60fps, and even the toppest of top tier PC's generally struggle to get over that in SL my girlfriend/roommate has a PC that makes mine look like a relic from 1987, and i own a relic PC from 1987, but that thing is packing high end render hardware and whats currently a top of the line workstation CPU, and at the best in places like social island she can maybe push 140fps in very crowded areas or complex sims she drops to 70-90, and with any kind of VR headset that wouldnt be pleasant at all you can use almost any VR headset in a similar mode to how mouse movement works, meaning if you were in first person in SL your head rotation would be like rotating in SL, and im sure you could bind the controllers to movement keys and everything
  10. Its very easy to do, you can also just buy a prebuilt AM1 system from someone and load up pfsense on it, drop in a network card. The sempron 2650 uses roughly 7w of power on under 25% load, up to 19w on its max with a 25w tdp. Including the motherboard, HDD and other components in the system the thing draws like 25w from the wall under its usual load and maxes at maybe 40w. Which out here anyway, means it costs a grand total of 26$ a year to run. Which is not a lot of money. Its not an old PC, its not powerful hardware, but im not running my network on a 140W Pentium D or anything. "Designed to do network routing", let me tell you about processors, theyre all based off the same thing, they all do the same thing, theyre all just transistors interpreting math. Embedded systems, similar to routers, are just very weak computers designed for basic tasks, like ATM machines or car wash terminals or home routers. They are not specifically designed from silicon to run networking applications any better. More powerful hardware runs it better. Even something like a Celeron J1800 integrated board with its max tdp of 10w will outperform the edgerouters entire lineup. They are 500mhz Dual Core MIPS architecture processors, they run very niche software but its not anything special. Id also like to note that even the Lite is a 7w unit at its base, and the larger units draw up to 60w. These are very weak little machines, they are not meant for a lot. They are cheap and effective and thats what matters. But bulding your own router off of an integrated SOC platform like AM1 or Celeron J's is a way better option if you want decent performance. The slightly higher cost of power running these incredibly low wattage systems is negligible when its a difference of maybe 5-10$ a year running on its average load. Its not a matter of DIY, its a matter of getting better network performance, control and depending on what you go with, a future upgrade path. While AM1 only has 4 pcie lanes, if you have one of the microATX boards with 3/4 pcie slots, you could pack all 3 or 4 with dual/quad gigabit cards to expand as you need, upgrade from the 2650 to an athlon 5350, increase the storage to as far as two sata headers will take you If you really wanted you could turn the thing into both a router and a home server. For anyone who knows how to work with PC's, doing something like this with a spare bit of cash is always a good idea.
  11. Protip: build your own router Ours is running ubuntu server and pfsense, its just a Sempron 2650 on an ECS Kam1-l board with 2gb of ram and a dual gigabit ethernet card from rosewill, spare 30gb HDD i had lying around for storage Total cost was like under 100$ for new parts and it outperforms the box comcast gave to us.
  12. Can someone tl;dr this for me, trying to read through this mess is getting kind of confusing. 1) I know nudity in an M rated sim is fine as long as its non-sexual, I.E. nude beaches 2) I did not know that child avatars were allowed anywhere near these places? Let alone nude child avatars? Im not sure i agree with that kind of thing even if LL says so, i dont think a child avatar should be anywhere other than G rated spaces.
  13. A good example of rules from a private land owner. And a bit concerning as someone who doesnt wear underwear ever due to lack of caring about trying to find fitting underwear.
  14. Its a bit of a gray area, no adult objects or content should be visible obviously, but i think as long as you're all covered, its all good. Ive seen women go around with nothing but their underwear and be fine, as far as what SL considers safe, thats probably fine, but many individual G rated places may have more strict rules above that involving shirt/pants/skirt over underwear. Its also different depending on what kind of avatar you have. Human avatars generally have to wear clothes, while those of us with furry avatars technically dont, but again thats also up to the rules of the space owner themselves. As long as you have underwear there isnt an issue with your skirt. As high cut as it may be, i dont think anywhere would have a problem with it and unless someone specifically asks you about it, you should be able to go to any G rated place without Linden staff source consequences. But once more, land officers of a private G rated space may not approve, its up to them.
  15. I've got absolutely no idea and I've never even heard someone talk about "race play". You sure that isn't a typo for p instead of c? Otherwise I'd imagine race play would just be some kind of RP where they're a different race. On secondlife I would see playing as a different race as a normal experience like anything else. I see no harm in it unless it were to get really racist. And honestly even if it does, as long as its private who cares.

    Voice on desktop

You may not have a multi i/o audio connector like most laptops do, many desktops have dedicated audio in, out, front speaker, subwoofers, etc all in 3.5mm but if you do, its going to be the green port that will work as line in/out make sure in your control panel > sound you have your devices configured correctly, you should be able to plug the headset into the green port and set it up as input/output if that doesnt work, buy a 3.5mm splitter and connect it to both green and pink for audio out and mic in
  17. I dont mean to laugh at someone elses expense but i find that hilarious tbh. Im playing SL on a 30$ Athlon 5350 with the integrated R3 graphics and im getting the same 5-6fps in crowded clubs.
  18. Alright, Doomed Ship. So my specs are here: With near max settings (no x16 AA or anything) in ~1080p (windowed) i get a whopping 4fps in this place. With my usual settings for when im regularly playing i get ~25fps. This is the absolute bare minimum performance @Sap996 should be seeing. As this is the Athlon 5350 on its own with no dedicated GPU. If you're seeing worse framerates than this on similar settings, something else is wrong with your computer besides hardware specs. Your A8 isnt fancy, but it should handle SL, especially when paired with the dgpu. Now of course this isnt a 100% perfect test, there are no people here, and avatars tend to drastically change performance.

    graphics card

really depends on the intel igp HD 620? Should run SL flawlessly. Intel Extreme Graphics 2? Im amazed the machine that runs it was even able to download the SL viewer at all. Got any more specs? If its something more recent it should run, but if youre talking Core2duo era x3100 graphics or whatever, nah, it aint gonna run SL at all
  20. @Sap996, alright, SL is very CPU intensive and due to something i cant remember with how SL's render engine works, it requires a processor with solid single core performance. And that APU does not have very good single core performance at all. Its very similar overall to my Athlon 5350. Which is a 30$ SOC APU for AM1. Compared to a processor like an i5 4460 with a really good single core score, note the single thread rating being nearly double that of the A8 or my Athlon. https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=2266&cmp[]=2195&cmp[]=2230 Thats likely your bottleneck with SL, SL likes single core performance while many games can work with a lot more cores. GTA V for example runs fine on this Athlon 5350 with a 750ti, but SL doesnt most of the time. The HD8570 isnt a bad card either but its nothing special, its between GT730/740 performance (for people who dont know how to reference AMD cards since their naming schemes are awful). It will handle SL fine and dandy, even the lower power mobile variant. Since the A8 6410 is BGA, its not upgradable, really you're just going to have to suffer with that single core performance. Note that in SL 15-25 fps is considered pretty playable. I get ~15fps average with the Athlon alone using the integrated R3 graphics, simply because the CPU bottleneck is that bad. Adding the 750ti brings that to maybe 25-35fps on average. But there are people with i7 7700k's overclocked, dual 1080ti's and all that, and theyre still getting sub 60fps because thats just how SL is.
  21. Well, that sounds like you're creating an issue for yourself. I dont hear about people freaking out because theres so many ethnically white users. Why is the race of a user important at all? Its secondlife, next to none of us are representative of who we are in the real world. A persons real world background doesnt matter here. Beleive it or not, but im not actually an anthropomorphic red panda in the real world. Im a 20 going on 21 year old mexican. People arent freaking out about it because it isnt a thing to be concerned about. I dont care what someones race is, i dont care who they are IRL, i care about how they act and interact with other people in SL. I know a 40 year old dude who pretends to be the glitziest, most extravagantly overdressed neon lightshow furry sparkledog there is, i know a 16 year old girl who's avatar is representative of the average dude in his 20's, i know an average dude in his 20's who's avatar is a 16 year old girl. Secondlife isnt like the real world. If you're finding yourself concerned about the type of people around you, find other people to be around. Theres a huge amount of people out there and theyre all different. If you're concerned by being a minority in a place of a majority, well thats not a problem in SL, nobody is gonna exclude you. You're creating that concern for yourself. SL isnt exclusive to any demographic. Its the demographic that likes SL.
  22. Well think of the kind of people who like to spend a lot of time in a virtual social world, its mainly bored white women and teenagers. Thats kinda how its always been even back in the early 2000's with my mom and her friends online with yahoo messenger chatrooms and stuff. Linden labs doesnt push this, thats just how social games are. Generally ethnic minorities dont care about this kinda stuff and they dont play these games. And on top of that you have the already very small demographic of people who play social games at all still. Think about the userbase here, if its an even percentage of the entire population of a country, say just the United states for example, ~77% of the users would be white, 13% would be african american, hispanic or latino would be ~17%, asians would be ~6%, listed multiracial would be ~3%. And yes i know those dont make 100%, those are numbers from the 2016 US Census Bureau, i forgot the exact way they categorize white mixed race but thats what causes the majority of the inconsistency there, a more realistic number out of that is "white alone" at 61%. So 61% of all US users would be white. Just white. In total you're looking at ~77% of users being dominantly white. And thats just US users, countries in Europe generally have overwhelmingly white populations, they dont have as many ethnic minorities or people of different skin colors there. But then again the exact opposite could be said for a few other countries where online gaming is popular, India, Brazil and Mexico are the big 3, where you will always find plenty of them in SL. Next to none of them are white either. Its just a matter of the people who actually play SL, not that SL isnt doing enough to attract POC or wont. Any social game is mainly white people. And lets not even get into the amount of people on here who dont use an avatar that represents their IRL body or ethnicity.
  23. seems to be an everywhere thing, comcast right now is struggling to connect to some stuff, for example i can load the forums fine, but i get no images, i can load facebook fine, but i cant open my alerts considering im still getting decent speeds theres probably something wrong with wherever these assets are hosted, so in SL's case, wherever parts of their servers are hosted are probably experiencing the same problems maybe its WW3 and we're just being kept out of the loop by the government, that would be cool in any sense, i was able to get into SI5 after waiting a few minutes, though its still kinda slow
  24. Today was "generic rave night" at The Feline Conspiracy, so everything was kinda glowy and loud. Me and Sabrina showed up around 5pm SLT and it just ended at around 9:20. Lots of glowsticks, lasers and EDM. There was a quiz and a contest as well for L$ which was nice. Lots of people too, considering this place usually gets 5-10 people at most on a busy night, having like 30 people there today was pretty cool. Note, this picture is very NSFW. https://prnt.sc/h6rn2z Someone else who got much better pictures, also nsfw, but facebook compressed the hell out of them: this is a long url
  25. Thats pretty cool, to get that yellow out, sit the cube in some hydrogen peroxide and set it out covered in the sun for a few hours (or google other methods for "retrobriting", an easier one is oxy-clean paste and plastic wrap, you need heat so sitting it in a toaster oven at 110 degrees or so is usually good). I do that regularly on old plastics to re whiten them. Somewhere in my boxes of crap ive got my real Habbo Dragon Lamp with my username on it that i won as part of a space building contest years ago. Though its like 4" tall and the fire is just plastic with some LED's, its pretty cool to get irl prizes from games.
