See? Marketing works!

Now, we just have to get the driving community on board with this.

My fee is reasonable. We can talk about branding any time.

Have some free samples in the meantime:

StickShifters

HardDrivers

4-on-a-Floor

You want people, you gotta give 'em what they want!

I have a free go-kart too, if anyone wants it.

It’s funny, I met a really nice newbie during the pandemic. He was gay and he was mainly here to be a part of an online gay community. I gave him the “In second life, we don’t really have that, you kind of just find the people you vibe with and that’s your community.” speech.

He absolutely didn’t accept that and eventually, he stopped logging in.

I wish I knew about Boystown back then and I wonder how many people we lose because they just couldn’t find their tribe so to speak.

There are lots of gay communities, they just aren't necessarily built around things like BoysTown. Instead, they are built around groups of friends who meet at clubs, at random places, near where they first rez in-world, etc. etc. etc.

Double-posting but I don't care. I have to say this, for the same reason it's polite to post the solution to a scripting problem when you figure it out, instead of leaving all the scripters hanging.

I like this Community Exhibit thing. I like anything that makes it easier for new people to spend time in SL. I like that we have more than one version of each kind of community in SL. And I especially like that, if one is patient enough, one can, in fact, find the people they vibe with, and that is their community.

Even if the Exhibit ends up with people standing around talking about how they find this and that wrong with that particular community, and they think others are better. Why? Because the more a new person is exposed to the truth of SL, the more likely they are to stick around until they find their community/communities.

There are communities here who are so niche a person might think they were all alone in the whole world if they didn't go exploring one day and stumble upon them. Not every region bothers with showing up in Search either, because it took them this long to find their special place where they can be themselves and not have to deal with judgemental people, and they aren't always going to be the most open to fresh traffic.

Having non-toxic places where people can spend a little time and sort themselves out, maybe even meet others who share their niche weirdnesses and show them more of the grid than they could find on their own, once they get to know them anyway, I think that's awesome.

I especially like that one can actually meet official staff. A lot of the new user help sims I visited when I was new hadn't seen a Linden in their lives, and quoted outdated stuff from the wiki at everyone like it was cult dogma, and on final initiation would try to sell you a timeshare. Having something official is great, and I think the Moles help that a lot. Before they came along it was different, somehow.

Anything that contributes to giving new users a healthy and non-craptastically-loathesome first few weeks inworld is worthy of support. I'm totally down with all of this.

Wish the Forums Cartel were a little more… relevant. It wouldn't hurt if a broader sampling of residents got involved in the forums, and this might be an opportunity.

I can think of several "communities" for whom more engagement with new residents might be mutually beneficial.

Yeah. The FC seems pretty quiet these days -- when was the last get-together, anyway?

But as much to the point, the link between the Cartel and the forums proper is, I think, increasingly a little tenuous.

The principle, though, is a good one. What's to stop LL from treating the forums as a kind of "community" as well, albeit one that is not actually in-world, and direct people to it via a kiosk at this new thing?

I was not aware that there was an actual forum cartel, I did do a search and found they actually have land, I think.. at least there is a place called the forum cartel.

https://secondlife.com/destination/the-forum-cartel-hangout

There was one picture you posted @Scylla Rhiadra a little while back, of various images of posts of the forum and your avatar standing among them, some were scattered on the ground, I thought it looked great.  Then Maddy came along with a flame thrower and burned it all to a crisp 🤣 If there were an exhibit, I think that would be an amazing one.

Yes! It's pretty ancient, and with a storied history. I have pics of myself there going back at least 15 years, and there are others here who have been members a fair bit longer than that. It used to have pretty regular parties and stuff, but those have been tapering off, I guess as people get busy. And a fair number of FC members haven't actually been active on the forums for years and years. There was a time when it was pretty representative, certainly, of a lot of the more active posters here, but that hasn't been the case in a long time.

It's a nice place, though. You should visit -- although it's generally fairly quiet these days.

I'm sure Maddy would be more than delighted to deploy her torch again. She's always up for a bit of arson (especially if it involves immolating one of my pics).

Well, they better be all-inclusive, or they're bad people.

Ah. so, any group or community that isn't "all-inclusive" is "bad people".

Outstanding.

So various LGBT groups swho cater specifically for ONE of the letters, say a gay men's club, or a lesbian club, and don't want disruptive visits from people who are NOT part of that scene, are "bad people".

BAD Lesbians, for not being inclusive of IM spamming sex pest hetro male avatars a day old.

BAD Gays, for not being inclusive of hetro females wanting hot dates.

BAD adult groups for not wanting Toxic Fake-Child Anti-Adult Griefer avatars on their A rated parcels.

And people wonder why Fake-Child avatars screaming for "inclusiveness" get auto-punted from so many places.

Last time I spoke to her, she was busy with some personal project, so she might not have time for widespread incendiary action.

On the plus side, it gives you something to aspire to!

When I stopped treating the forums like my therapist or a punching bag, I found it actually made it easier to poop, so I don't know if I want to go back in that direction. I'm pretty old, you know.

I think I'm going to start going to the Welcome Hub more often. It was really refreshing.

Are you suggesting the high volume posters are constipated?  I attribute my easy pooping since seldom posting here to less siting on my butt, and eating one raw apple (granny smith preferred) every day.  If your teerh (or lack of) can't handle a crisp fresh apple, then you must get an apple coring tool:

A southern US biker bar display might provide additional options for newbies if they are not into Socialism and Boys Town.  (to stay on topic)

Nah, just the ones who read only the last page of a thread, and then act out, without realizing how silly it looks, and without bothering to read anything leading up to what they decided to trigger themselves to.

But then we've probably all had days like that. No telling how many people have put me on Ignore because I ran out of coffee or whatever. That, or they just needed more love as an infant, Iunno.

Oh, another neato thing when I was at the Exhibit! I saw someone actually going about as a primitar. I haven't seen one of those inworld since I was at that weird museum with the Linden World exhibit!

Or... the last time... I.. wore one...

I have read every post from the start, starting 1 hour after the first post yesterday.  I still have nothing worth saying about the Community Exhibit, except that it is a small sampling of communities that qualify, and might give a newbie some regions to explore.  The only two that sounded like fun were the SL Drivers, and Boys Town (both not covered by the first Video). The only busy region you could visit, if you could figure out the LM, was an adult bar at Boy's Town.  I love the old multi-region builds, but most are empty except for occasional events.  A newbie looking for a special interest would do better checking SL Events and Search and the SL Destinations.

Active communities are out of style these days it seems.  Sign of the paranoid times.  There are always hobbies that have active communities, but they are often for profit, usually require a high $L balance to get started, and there is a learning curve.  KittyCatS! is a good example.  But does SL think their 30,000 group members qualify as a community, or an expensive hobby run as a for profit business?

Music/Live performers was one of the Community categories.  There are music event groups for the express purpose of spamming your set to other music event members.  Everyone I know has the notices blocked.  They mainly serve as an Archive of whether a hostess spammed the notices as required, since some managers think someone reads the 45 notices per hour that a general group can generate.

I was happy to see just outside the Community exhibit they added a portal to the Linden Realms.  A sign that you need to walk into the portal to get transported inside the Realms might help though.  Clicking on the portal does nothing at all.

I think curated examples of Adult communities should be part of Welcome island, but I'd like to see it done in a way that conforms to Linden Lab's own rules about not advertising Adult venues on G-rated land. How about one separate Moderate region with a dance club, a roleplay hub, and links to Adult sims and and venues? Maybe call it "SL After Dark"?  😎

If the sponsors of Motown pull the plug on their region, maybe?

I think "SL After Dark" is a brilliant title and that's a great idea and they simply must do it if they REEEAAAALY want to retain customers. I personally think the adult side of SL is really only like 25% of the activity because really, most of the activity is shopping and dressing up in hopes for that adult activity that never comes lol. Or else there are people who have adult activity in RL and use SL simply for other reasons, a business, an art gallery, a hangout with friends, etc. It's not THAT large that it should overwhelm the whole "look" of SL. But it shouldn't be hidden or ignored.

Surely the Motown people wouldn't object to having their brand next to "adult" would they? What songs do they think people play while they are bumping the pixels?

There was a holiday party 2022, so just over a year ago.

I have been known to go sit in the clubhouse to sort inventory, but only a few times a year.  Occasionally someone pops in.   I wonder if the HUD that lets you know someone is there still works.  Several years ago there was an alt party.  We all logged in alts and chatted with each other trying to figure out who was who.

The forums are a community of many different kinds of people, but I fear there would not be a warm welcome for many newcomers.  Discussion here is difficult on the best of days.  Still, it would be fun to have activities there again and see others in the pixel.

Yes, I think that's the last one I attended? Occasionally the FC group chat will pop up, but less and less often -- and generally with people I don't know chatting.

And we used to have the Breakfast Club, run by Go, for a while, but that also faded sadly.

There is theoretically no reason why the diverse crowd here now wouldn't "fit in" or be welcome. 14 years ago, this was a far more contentious and cliquey space than it is now, but the FC was pretty active, and mostly we managed not to kill each other at parties (although there was at least one occasion I can recall when Pep tempted me badly).

But the fact that, again, there are fewer and fewer members of the FC active here means that really the two are now pretty different communities, so in that regard, you may be right.
