Different Trains (1988) by Steve Reich.
It is a composition for string quartet and tape. It depicts the train journeys Reich made from 1939 to 1942 between New York and Los Angeles during which he commuted between his divorced parents. He later realised that if he lived as a Jew in Europe at the time he would have been on a very different train.
Audio clips are of his governess reminiscing about their travels together, as well as a retired Pullman porter, and three Holocaust testimonies from survivors "all my age and now living in America."
