Not every American celebrates Halloween, at least not to the extent that it is promoted. Sure it's fun for the kids to dress up and go knock on the neighbors doors to get  some  candy, they look so cute and often it is the only time you talk to that neighbor all year. I don't get into the whole dress my avi up like a demon thing either, but 99% of what's for sale out there I don't want anyway, I just find the stuff I do want, and post pictures of my avi doing whatever I happen to be in the mood for at the time.

Meh. I don't celebrate any holidays. I just celebrate the equinoxes and solstices. That they happen to fall close or on certain holidays is mere co-incidence.

They aren't co incidences, as other have said, the early Christian church co-opted the major pagan holidays to make it easier to convert the populace. Same with sacred glades and springs, cut down the trees, build a church, incorporate the native spirits as saints, presto, done.

Even the virgin Mary was an add on.

The whole Christmas celebration was of zero importance to early Christians, but there was this major pagan celebration concerning the rebirth of the sun, so they said, hmmm let's make that day the day of the birth of Jesus

I love Halloween. It's the holiday the Christians had the least success "depaganifying"

Actually when it got turned into a time to get out and visit your neighbors that had a lot of Christian values, but that didn't seem to stick.

As has been already mentioned, Halloween is not just a us holiday.. How do you feel about Thanksgiving? Columbus day? Martin Luther King Day? Valentine's Day?

Valentine's Day can be fun in SL, but the rest are utterly meaningless and non-relevant to non 'mericans.

Columbus day. Did you make that up? Never heard of it ?

The beauty of SL is that anyone can create their own content. You can create celebrations for anything you want!

I want a care bear day or many days!

But too tired to make myself, so not gonna make it happen.

No, this day is pretty much only celebrated by bankers, postmen, and teachers, the rest of us go about our  daily live like it's a normal day, other then having no mail, and   the banks and schools being closed.

So, its only some American holidays you have an issue with.. I'm guessing you have an issue with the occult aspect of it? I mean, in a world where people are and can be anything they want, it has to be a religious issue. People walk around SL as every sort of creature you can think of and some you probably cant. Why have an issue with Halloween? Don't like the clothing style? Don't buy it.

Also, you can easily google Columbus day rather than make fun of it.. Not that i give a damn about it personally. What country do you live in? I would bet you have holidays I have never heard of. I wouldn't make fun of them, i would look them up. If i cared..

Besides the 4th of July, Halloween must rank as one of the most tedious times of the Second Life calendar year for people who are not from america.

Freebies, group gifts, hunts, and event items are as close to useless and unwearable as can be and at time of writing we are still a week and a half away.

There are over 7 billion people who inhabit the earth, outside of america.

Amen to this.  In southern hemisphere right now our days are long and nights are short.  We generally have still adopted all the U.S. customs around Halloween. It has never really felt right to me.  I refuse to call lollies, candy though.

It is so tedious when people take this tack with everything.  "Don't like x, don't <verb> x then!".
Obviously if they didn't like "x" then they wouldn't "<verb> x", it goes without saying, however that has nothing to do with expressing sentiments about them.
It is just a way of shutting down an opinion.

Someone could also say to you,  "If you don't like her opinion about x, don't read it then!"

Im not american and even i know that. In fact the supermarket here promoted it a few years ago, hadnt really heard much about it before that.

I have heard of columbus day btw, it about christopher columbus.

Does any one celebrate bring your pets to work day, no pants day, talk like a pirate day?

While I agree that not everyone here is in the US and that assuming so is both annoying and isolationist, what's your point? It's your SL. If you don't want to do Halloween stuff, then don't. But since there are so many events and such, clearly there are people that do want to do it, and you have no more place telling them they can't then they do telling you you have to.

The best way to enjoy Halloween...

Is handing out Martin Luther (not Martin Luther King) sweets and an educational handout that teaches kids the values of protestantism because it funny enough is on "Reformation Day" - then watch as concerned parents shy their children away and never ever come back =^.^=

One of my friends in here makes a point of pointing out as many holidays as she can find. She even made a big deal about Bastille Day. I was like really, you are celebrating the first socialist revolution?

My favourite period of the SL calendar is Easter as I like the theme of the gifts, hunts and freebies, plus I get to take off my kitty ears and put on my bunny ones.

I don't have a Christopher Columbus outfit, or even a suitable hat, so I'll pass on that special day ?

Christmas is a nice time too, even though I am not a christian. The outfit options are nice as can go festive or wrap-up for the cold.

This blood, bones, pumpkins and demons time is so ugly and seems to last forever.

So, we should expect threads about Thanksgiving ans the 4th of July from the non Americans, Christmas and Easter among the non-Christians, Kwanzaa from the non-Africans, Hanukkah from the non-Jewish and so on and so forth? How about not ranting about others holidays? If she has such a problem with the " blood, bones, pumpkins and demons" she should rant about the demon/angel RP sims. Or the combat sims. But to pick a holiday? Seriously?

"Yes" in a word.  People would be perfectly entitled to opinions on those, especially if they are being affected by them.
You could change the topic from "holidays" to anything else people might care about with that attitude and then there would be no opinions allowed on anything.  You are expressing an opinion right now, as am I.

Good gracious, everything is a sacred cow these days.

How exactly is someone in SL being affected by Holiday decorations and sales? Why get so heated over this? If you don't celebrate the holiday, don't assume you know what its all about.

Well if it isn't obvious then I am not going to attempt to explain it.  Nobody said it affected them in BIG ways and certainly I don't see anyone "getting heated" except perhaps you.  It is just opinions.  You don't need to celebrate something to understand what it is about either.  That is an ignorant point of view.  Should we not learn about different holidays from other cultures because we cannot possibly understand?  Really?

You really should know about a holiday before you try and celebrate it, it saves from getting egg all over your face. Not sure how one can learn about holidays by hiding from them and saying they are bored with them. Ranting over the "scary" decorations is kind of silly.

This thread has got nothing to do with religion, at least not as far as I'm concerned, it also has nothing to do with the specifics of any celebration day anywhere in the world. The sole reason I began this topic was with reference to freebies, group gifts, hunt items and event items primarily being wasted on a theme (Halloween) that is very ugly to me.

I don't want bats wings on shoes, blood on a blouse, or even an american flag on a dress or a skirt when that time of year comes to pass.

The build-up and fallout from Halloween will seemingly take several weeks before it ends yet and until it's over I am missing out on otherwise potentially nice items which I enjoy collecting and sifting through, as most have been replaced with ugly stuff.
