  1. Really enjoying this thread. Some favorites of mine to explore are Kowloon's Gate Reborn (build mimics an old Japanese video game); Rieri Town in Tokyo, SSOC (modern urban Japanese town); and Sula Pinta, Rieul (Japanese teahouse and garden).

    Why Mainland?

Concierge and Land User Group Meeting are every fourth Wednesday, so the next should be coming up on Sept 22. And for anyone else interested in Public User Group Meetings, here's an old Wiki page with some details.

    Why Mainland?

Hi Prokofy. Like you, I heard that Patch interview and saw forum pages that indicated old Linden homes and their continents were being phased out. I suspect that such plans were canceled or delayed when COVID-19 quarantining brought SL a flurry of new and returning residents. A shortage of Belli housing was already an issue, even before the SL population increase, so canceling plans to eliminate the dated housing was a sensible short-term solution. Now, after a period of relative emptiness, new premium residents are occupying the older housing and likely turned older housing into a money-maker again. This means that at least in the short term SL is less likely to proceed with the "urban renewal" projects we all heard about. Note: this is entirely my business-head speaking; I have no inside scoop from the Lindens. Us non-Lindens are left looking at the changing What without knowing the Why or When, leading to uninformed theories and guesses - like my own.

    Why Mainland?

Thanks! These weren't available a year or so ago, so new ownership may have shifted policy. Plus, the huge number of new and returning residents during a year and a half of quarantine made the need for homes acute. Yes, this sounds like a good path forward. On the other hand, the residents who love these places and have supported them for years would be sorely disappointed. Over the years I've lived in both a Japanese home and some of the boxy modern ones and would miss being able to occasionally visit and reminisce. I suppose these places don't truly need to be replaced, because (with enough server space) in theory new continents could be built endlessly.

    Why Mainland?

I understand from Linden Homes discussions that some of the original home styles are being phased out (e.g. Japanese style homes or the fantasy mushroom ones). They are no longer an option for new premium members, and the old mainland parcels with those Linden Homes are / will be eliminated. This makes me wonder if LL has plans to eventually build new blank-slate mainland continents and phase out the old ones, one abandoned parcel at a time.

Thanks everybody for the helpful info.
  7. I've spent a lot of time and money on my avatar, and know that a lot of other folks do too... so I make sure to compliment ones that strike me as unusual, intricate, or attractive.

    Why Mainland?

Aloha all. Is there a compelling reason to buy a mainland parcel for my home? I'm currently renting a quarter of a private homestead region, so get to add 1250 LI worth of objects. Cost is L1850 pw, which compared to other rental parcels seems like a nice balance of area and LI. I enjoy exploring places, and see a lot of mainland parcels abandoned, for sale, or for rent. But in my experience mainland parcels are often more expensive (plus the premium membership requirement), have less LI available, and have a bunch of junk next door (tall borders, huge buildings, low skyboxes, blinking advertising, military bases, strip clubs). Maybe I'm just seeing the wrong spots on an otherwise nice mainland. Maybe mainland has a lot to offer. Maybe mainland is more affordable than renting. What am I missing?
  9. I figured the Linden Realms payouts work something like the stimulus checks we're getting these days: they prop up a slow economy. Maybe all these recent moves by the new owners are showing how unhealthy SL's virtual economy truly is. A business model in which SL's builders and property investors survive because SL reinvests in its own economy can't survive for long. BUT - what if SL's economy is healthy now because of new and returning residents, so SL no longer needs to provide its "stimulus checks?" Time will tell.
  10. Thanks everyone. Yes Claireschen, I often ride along Wellington Road - I like to visit several regions in Rieul. I've bookmarked several rez zones along other SL Routes too; I get a real blast exploring the old regions. It's fun when places catch my eye and I pull the bike over to explore, and that's an experience you can't get in SL's newer regions. There are a few gems hidden among the badly dated places, but what I really like is the sense of community that some regions seem to have. The new Linden Homes are cookie cutter developments, like we see scattered all over suburbia in RL. The old regions, for all their problems, had / have real personality. Having said that, I'm sooo glad that those obnoxious advertising signs, low skyboxes, tall structures, high border walls, region circling backgrounds, etc are not permitted in the new regions. I can understand why places next door to those kinds of nuisances are often abandoned or remain unsold for years. Maybe someday there will be a new Bellisseria, one on which you can either pick a cookie cutter home OR build one of your own.
  11. Quarantining for a year has a lot of people feeling like a caged animals. This makes me grateful to SL for providing a way to safely leave the house and hit the wide open, never ending road. I enjoy motorcycles, so have been doing a lot of cruising along SL's classic Route 1 and Route 8. Those older roads are often broken though, so I've also been rezzing my bikes in boat rez areas of Bellisseria and exploring SL's newest terrains. So my question: what roads would you recommend for driving (whatever your vehicle)? Two examples: visit this rez zone in SSPE1168 (wonder what the region's new name will be when the moles are finished building it?) and enjoy driving down the forested dirt roads along SL's new log homes. Great place to practice SL motorcycle steering! And if you enjoy dirt bikes or ATVs, the ocean floor has exactly the same landscape. Go to any boat rez zone like this one in Baxby Gulf and race along the dunes of the ocean floor. Where are your favorite places to ride?
  12. I appreciate the Buddhist services in SL, especially while temples are closed in RL due to quarantine, social distancing, etc. I love to explore all the creativity that goes into some sims and products. It's fun to see the really old places in SL and consider 1) how much the tech has advanced, and that 2) that really old place was cutting edge in its day. I'm grateful for the openness and honesty that people can share in SL. I'm so thankful that SL provides me with a way to escape a year of quarantine, a way to travel and meet people and do fun stuff safely. In SL, everyone is vaccinated.
  13. Congratulations! Hope to see you inworld as a fellow citizen.
  14. In RL you don't steer with the handlebars except in emergencies or at very low speed, because steering with the handlebars is jerky and potentially dangerous (could flip the bike). Instead, you lean your body left or right and allow physics to steer. Problem is, using arrow keys to steer an SL bike is like steering with handlebars. It jerks the bike around and makes it less controllable. Some more recent SL motorcycles allow the rider to adjust the steering sensitivity. That makes turns a little less jerky, but an SL bike will never steer as smoothly as an RL bike. It's just something you get used to with practice.
  15. Cool beans Nuuanu. I had the same kine problem getting a hapa / Poly male bod-head-shape going. Even fewer choices for guys, so finding the right stuff is pretty difficult. I finally went with Slink Physique body, which is nice and slim and surfer kine. Most male bodies make avatars look like a protein sheik, all Bruce Banner and all. I used a Catwa Shaheen head for a while, but it had goofy expressions and just wasn't quite right. Landed a AK Deluxe Yang head and shape, and those work out well. And yeah, gotta concur with AlohaShoyu - my hair was a mess until I found the YumYum store.
  16. Added bonus: this is on the North Shore of Hawaii Surf. But no room for surfing in this water 🙂
  17. I suppose a lot depends on what you consider realistic. What sort of body shape is your avatar looking for? As others have said the system avatars with a new head can work nicely. I like a fit avatar that's built more like a marshal artist or swimmer. For that I use a Slink Physique body, and see that they have a "Male Body Bundle" in their store: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Slink/64/109/26 Gotta be honest, IMHO there are way to many 'roid rage avatars out there. And when the typical male animation is added and it looks like a sequel to 8 Mile is being filmed. 🙂
  18. That's my story too, though I never recovered the old account. Like you I'd probably be horrified if I did 🙂
  19. Aloha and thanks everybody. Mahalos Chic, glad to know it's not just me. Good idea, I'll check forums. Sad that SL MP is a big fail for land. Another thing: I'd like to be able to leave reviews for items purchased inworld. Can't do that either, even though I'd really like to throw some kudos to SL's great creators. Thanks for reaching out Count, I'll look for it. Thanks Wai, yeah, stumbling seems to work :-) I really enjoy exploring just by pulling up the map and clicking on random regions. The map view is helpful because you can tell if a region has boating potential, if you're into that.
  20. Aloha all. Hope you're safe and healthy and happy, and dealing with life OK. I'm having a hard time browsing homes for sale/rent on SL Marketplace and would appreciate your advice. I have a budget, but all the marketplace listings are priced at 0 so I can't sort them by price. I have a prim count I'd like to shoot for, but the listings can't be sorted that way either. There are specific types of regions that feel like home, but the listings aren't separated that way, and can't be sorted that way. This makes Marketplace a really frustrating place to find a home. I've gone to the inworld offices or websites of SL property managers, and some of them are nicely sorted by these options. But in these places I see just one owner's listings, not everything available. What would be really useful is an SL MLS service, something like the sites we search to find our RL homes. But with no such thing out there, I've ended up renting places by stumbling upon them in regions I enjoy. To be fair though, maybe the problem is me. Ya know, maybe I just don't know how to sort Marketplace listings properly, or don't know what keywords to use in a Marketplace search. Can anyone suggest what I'm missing here? Maybe there is an SL MLS and I don't know about it. Or if you have some SL Marketplace clues, I'd appreciate it. T H A N K S.
  21. Sadly, the Firestorm Support group just pointed me back to the Firestorm Wiki page I linked above. Guess I'll be doing videos in the SL viewer.
  22. THIS. I get annoyed by the chatter in some groups so open the groups profile and disable chats (though leave announcements on). The peace is... wonderful.
  23. Seeing this error pop up when I log into SL. Wondered if it was problem with my gear, but see that SL Marketplace is down for maintenance at the moment. Maybe MP is moving to Amazon servers today.
  24. My friend Waiomao had a similar issue. A film soundtrack played whenever we arrived at her Linden Home. She had no media player or media assigned to the Linden Home preferences, so it was a mystery. Noisy neighbor maybe? But restricting sound to the parcel in preferences didn't stop it. She later moved to a new Linden home, and the sound persisted in the new place too. Weird as hell. She had named both homes "Hawaii," but later changed the name of her place. The soundtrack disappeared when her place was renamed. It seemed like the media was attached to the property name in SL's servers, and didn't matter what the property settings were.
