  1. actually the official viewer almost always gets close to double the FPS comepare to FS. On a lower spec system like a laptop, the official viewer might be a better choice
  2. Unless you were a photographer, doing say, weddings. Hours spent fixing the avatars, the hair, the system clothes, the nose, shoulders, elbows. Good times LOL
  3. problem is really all the chat"AI" is good at is scanning the internet for for availble information and then responding with a summary in a human like format. It doesn't think, ponder, come up with new ideas, or offer opinions. It is basically a better way to slice bread or put butter on toast.
  4. SL has been really stable the last number of years, at least on firestorm. The main issues always end up being windows or someother software or a hardware issue, An i7 or AMD equivelent, 3070 and 32 gig of ram. and don't forget the SSD drives, preferable on .m2. That, and LOTS and plenty of cooling, or air flow, Don't need water cooling, but a good tower, good fans and keep that sucker clean
  5. with win11 and just SL running I am often using 14-16 gig or more of ram. Stick with the 32
  6. Need to come up with a better name. Cannot say PBR without thinking of Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer lol
  7. SL is really not meant for laptops IMO, They turn into a portable toaster oven (lol) and with the newer code now, the graphics card can ramp up even more, often running at 90%+ for extended periods of time, assuming you have ALM with shadows on
  8. Interesting but I am pretty sure this 10th i7 I got I ordered with no iGPU if I remember correctly. In any case no quicksync option in OBS for me
  9. Its the avatar that is killing SL. With a good machine almost all sims perform well, You can walk around with all the shader and shadows on, a decent draw distance. Add in a few Avis and most places start turning into pea soup. Get 30-50 avis together for a event, you now got a bowl of frozen molasses
  10. I am what I consider myself a 'power user' but also mostly tech unaware, There are 2 main issues in SL - one is inside of SL itself and one in your own computer that requires someone to have a Masters in Computers to use SL correctly. You have to be able to find cache directioies, white list files and folders, optimize processes, while list for security scans, it is never ending. One does not simply install Sl and "play" Inside SL you have to know all the ins and outs of the veiwer, how to try to overcome lag issues when they arrive, how to set all the preferences, learn a few debug settings. You have to learn all about EEPs, how to change lighting, local lites, attached lites... again SL is not someting a novice can really install and play and expect out of the box good performance even with a higher end computer. When SL works, it works good and its amazing, When it sucks it sucks bad and you wanna take a hammer to your computer sometimes. SL has good days and bad days. At least Firestorm has gone along way to make the UI (mostly) usable
  11. turned out really nice. great BW conversion and DOF, And damn if the girl avi isn't a spitting image of Amy Lee! I did this song years ago though the concept was vastly different was about the dude's gf died in a car crash and she couldn't move on cause he wouldn't let her go. Such a great song one my favs!
  12. can't really benchmark SL anyways, SL is like a woman - sometimes she is in a good mood and everything goes smooth and easy, next miniute, bad mood and no matter what you do it's all horrible! 😂
  13. "META" is DOA but Zuck has enough bucks to keep that thing around for years
  14. one last thing though.. need to turn off the "dynamic rendering' (in FS anyways) when videoing a scene - this will prevent mesh objects from disappearing and suddenly reappearing as you are say, doing a zoom in shot. This of course forces the viewer to render everying within draw distance which can add alot to the FPS eating
  15. OBS captures your mics on your computer - or the sound from desktop. so really the only way to record them would be through SL voice.
  16. Unfortunlately, I need to video events like weddings, so most couples prefer their guests to be present on video LOL, But really, there must be a solution for those with 'higher end" gaming systems to be able to use SL at more than 10fps in crowded areas. But oh well such is SL.....
  17. animats: What is the biggest problem Second Life users report? Bot: ..... and poor customer service. animats: I am getting stuck logging into Second Life. What should I do? Bot .... you can contact Second Life support for further assistance. LOL somethings never change, not even fancy new AI Bots
  18. from what I read the server doesnt wait for your machine to handshake it just sends to packets and won't resend if missed. But I still have to question - these bandwidth specs were the same back in 2007 when if you were on a "fast" internent then it was probably up to 5mbs - and the typical computer back then was prob less than a 1/8th as fast as they are now. So a decade and a half later there has been no improvement in delivering data via UDP?
  19. OK. Not knowing whay UDP is I looked it up. But I still wonder then in 2023 when internet speeds are often 100+ mbs download - we would need to limit download of these packets to 1.5 mbs. Suppose it makes sense but still seems rather outdated
  20. in 2023 - the 'sweetspot' for internet speed is 1.5 mbs - maybe that is a problem right there!
  21. Is there a "trick" to force avatars to load? this is at a event, about 90 there, but cam zoomed and focused kinda tight so not that many on the cam view. was there at least 20 min before taking this screen shot. I catured both the texture console and statistics panel. Right click/texture refresh doesnt work force them to load, wonder if there is a way to force the viewer to render them?
  22. sounds like the old days of web develepoment - at some point as machines and internet speeds got better, the people still left accessing the site on old turtle machines and AOL dial up were pretty much just out of luck. It just doesn't pay to cater to them after a while
  23. In that case, why not just delete that setting from preferences to begin with?
  24. I know this has been talked about alot already, but I was thinking about it again the other day. The beandwidth settings are still the same now as they were when SL first started and 1meg download speeds were then kinda blazing fast. And while there mayhave been other reasons to limit this such as processor speed, graphics cars and system memory, in 2023 , does it make anysense to use 2005 settings? I had been using 30000 as my max download for a long time no issues. My current internet is 300mbs down and up, and I used only wired LAN. So I now have set it to 200000 (200mbs), I set this in debug setting and I have yet to see any issues with that. I think modern computers can process all this stuff thrown at them without much a hassle at all. I mean back in the early-mid 2000s I was designing websites based on 800x600 max resolution and 1 meg download speeds to be exceptional. Times have changed. I don't know what is 'under the hood' here, maybe the code is so old it just maxes out the download speed no matter how fast your internet is anyways, dunno. But if this really is early 2000 standards - maybe it is time for an update to the standards?
