2023 - Which viewer is better for low end computers?
Jackson Redstar replied to Jesiris's topic in Second Life Viewer
8 gig of RAM and WIN 11 might be one problem....... -
In almost all cases, the Official viewer will have much much better FPS. And for that, you get a horrible UI and lacking a ton of features Firestorm has to make using it enjoyable amd useful

The Goal: 30 FPS
Jackson Redstar replied to Feorie Frimon's topic in General Second Life Tech Discussion
Streamlabs is a varient of OBS software. With OBS getting the right recording settings can make a huge difference in quality and performance I was planning on making a OBS video on my record settings, someday.. -

one of the major grips with Sansar was hard disks filling up after everytime one went into Sansar -

You didn't remention what record software you are using, but, you are recording a screen - your record speed is set by the record speed you choose in your recording software, not the FPS in game. even 2 FPS you can still record at 60 FPS, but of course the recording will look bad with jerky movements. With software like OBS, you can monitor your recording to see if you are getting encoding lag and/or rendering lag. Even if I am at a really laggy event (like 8FPS in world) I still really don't get rendering lag or encoding lag. I currently record at 60FPS in OBS, and I edit the timeline at 24 FPS. But in most cases in world, the FPS is often between 10-32 FPS (I use a FPS limit of 32 FPS) with most recordings I do usualy falling in the mid teens in terms of FPS in world. Not ideal of course, but I do weddings so not alot of fast movement either. But I also only record 2k footage so there is that as well. I have a i7, a 3070, 32 gig of fast ram, and everything is running from and recording to SSDs. I haven't yet named my computer, but I suppose if I had to I'd name it Dependable Dan lol -
@Beq Janus would a 10 bit SL ever be in the works you know?
-
what is a 'HDR monitor'? I know what HDR is of course, But Im not sure I seen a HDR monitor I have a BenQ 10 bit monitor, though, never use the 10 bit part of it. Amd yeah, 'cartoonish' would be a good description of what the PBR viewer looks like right now. Or maybe over cooked. at least the avi does. Blacks too crushed as well. But playing around with a couple settings in the Lighting tab mostly corrected that. But its a work in progress

though love. Maybe if more viewers would not render these overly complex avatars and clothing, creators will learn to make the mesh properly......

Club viewer overload
Jackson Redstar replied to animats's topic in General Second Life Tech Discussion
If I remember correctly, in the old days there used to be a refresh scene/world on the viewer. Since most everything is server side now I wonder why there couldn't be a refresh/reload scene. But I am sure smarter people than me have thought of that and there are prob good reasons why it wouldn't work. Or even a right click on a avi and select a refetch/reload option to get the viewer to to re fetch the data for that avi. In most cases this is just an annoyance, but when filming the area with all these half baked avis, it becomes a real hassle -
Niran has a vendetta against badly built avatars, so in most areas 70% of the avis will be greys in tock settings. Need to go into preferences and turn up all the settings for avatars. Keybindings you will use to put in "normal" walking. that I did a youtube tutorial a while back. search youtube for blackdragon tutorials there are some good in depth guides on there people have done keybindings https://youtu.be/D3EZ1Hz6qq0

BD would only work if the guy was on it and he was shooting the pic - no one else can see pose adjustments you make in BD except the person on BD using the poser

Club viewer overload
Jackson Redstar replied to animats's topic in General Second Life Tech Discussion
I noticed this for a while and have been asking how to 'force' the viewer to render the half rendered people. the only solution I have found that sometimes works is derender the people - the go and remove them from the blacklist, and then switch groups to try to get the viewer to render them. sometimes it works, sometimes it don't -
Id say most rl filming techniques translate to machinima from shot type to lighting. I myself watch alot of 'film school' youtubes to learn more shooting video in SL. While it isn't possible to do every type of shot in sl with a fly cam , certianly we have alot of control of the lighting in a virtual world (if you build your own set)

20 years, still full crash on teleport
Jackson Redstar replied to Paul Hexem's topic in General Second Life Tech Discussion
....And you're still the same, I caught up with you yesterday (Still the same, still the same) Moving game to game, no one standing in your way Turning on the charm long enough to get you by (Still the same, still the same) You're still the same....... Seriously though, 15 years ago crashes were part of daily life in SL whether it was sim crashes or tp crashes, I do find now and then a tp will get 'hung up' then crashes the viewer, but not often anymore -
Black Dragon viewer serious performance issues
Jackson Redstar replied to Jackson Redstar's topic in Second Life Viewer
In a nutshell, why getting new users to stay is so hard...unless one has a PhD in Technology.. yeah yeah I know it's a "game" and gamers know all this stuff already - but my guess would be that 10% of the user base is a "gamer" with an in depth knowledge of all the inner working of their OS. But thank you - I'll recheck everything is white listed and as a side note I always set the background idle to 0 in debug settings so it never "sleeps" UPDATE - i USED to always have everything white listed. I forgot Win 11 got rid of Defender and there is no longer any options to allow for exclusions. I dont use any other AV either -
Any Help Would Be Appreciated

one thing to check for in windows - game mode setting = off, and this one here Hardware -accelerayed GPU scheduling = off. and make sure Optimations for Windowed Games = off -
Black Dragon viewer serious performance issues
Jackson Redstar replied to Jackson Redstar's topic in Second Life Viewer
When i do video of sl, i am constantly trying in post color grade to make it look a little more like rl film, and try to control the saturation and contrast. I recently bought a BenQ monitor, 10 bit, but of course 10 bit would never be used for SL, but it does produce 100% srgb coverage. not sure what this all has to do with the thread, but trying to reproduce a film look from a SL screen recording has been an obsession of mine for a while LOL -
Mini rant regarding residential rent
Jackson Redstar replied to Jackson Redstar's topic in General Discussion Forum
yes, i do... and sometimes I have a habit of thinking how things work in the RL should also be like in SL.... -
Recently I had rented in E**. Beautiful area if you've never visited there. Normally renting in SL is pretty easy. Pay box. And if you leave - easy, let the owner/manager know, and whatever excess rent you have will be returned. I mean we don't sign leases in SL it is simple month to month or even week to week. Well, come to find out - not so in **. There, if you have time on the box, they keep it until which time they rent the place out again. I don't really know if this is common in SL or not, but I gotta say, if you ever do rent in E**, make sure never to to pay rent in advance or plan on staying until time is fully expired. I unfortunlately have a habit of paying 2-3 months in advance, and at 8k a month that adds up. Or maybe it is just me this is the common practice for rentals in SL

FS and BD side by side be like them running a marathon - only BD is the one that smokes 3 packs a day! Seriously though, I am wondering if there is an issue with BD or something maybe in Win 11 chocking the life out of it, I am in a sim about 50 people, of first of all have to set the avatar render options in BD to unlimited or nearly everyone is a grey blob, but besides that, with the other settings roughly equal, FS loads the scene running a good 25-28fps in under a minute, BD, 10 minutes later is still huffing along at 3-10fps and even 20 minutes later some things (objects and avatars) as still not out of their grey state. I notice this even in empty sims but complex - lots of objects, transperencies in trees and bushes etc.... so I am wondering, is it just me or have other BD users noticed this as well? wouldn't surpise me at all if something in Win 11 is playing choke the chicken. My system is core i7, Nvidia 3070, 32 gig RAM, drives all SSD. BTW I use the studio driver on the 3070 - my video editor seems to like that better. Win is 11 pro, version 22H2, build 22621.1992
