  1. I actually think that the 'enlarging the bounding box with a single vertices' method will work best for my somewhat problematic window. I have noted that some big name designers simply use oversized (out of scale) windows to solve this issue but that just doesn't work for me.
  2. OK. Not pasting in your pretty pictures but on rereading I didn't do exactly this -- in my previous comment. How do you designate a different texture for the lower LODs? I remember LOTS of chatter on this when mesh was new and having a different texture for each LOD setting which at the time seemed to not be a good idea but they were talking about simpler objects on the whole. So "I" at least would like some more details LOL Sometimes you think we knowa more than we knowa :D.
  3. I am sticking with "2", but my version of acceptable for "2" might actually be "1" in lots of books LOL. At least we work on it. A builder friend of mine was chatting with me the other day about who's sim to pick for Fantasy Faire. Personally, I don't think the style I am making is going to work for him, but he did say something like, 'well, at least I know it will be low lag with good LODs and plenty of room" and he is right on that. My first building can been seen ALL the way across the sim and is 57 I think so I am very happy with that. And the uploader (bless its heart) made a perfect physics model FOR me that was only 3 li and it is a very organic shape. I was so thrilled I almost started dancing as I was NOT looking forward to that physics model even though I pretty much enjoy making them. That doesn't mean that the others will work so automatically of course :D. My build for SL14B had the best framerates going (officially) but one of the performance leads wanted to add "a bunch more stuff" as it wasn't busy enough. I told them that wasn't going to happen, it wasn't BUSY because people were actually going to be able to dance there! The reply was "but we love lag!". Actually lots of folks were very happy with the low lag sim :D. I think I only used a dozen textures in the whole sim and "I" at least thought it looked wild and fun. Anyway, end of my work day and past and I was working yet again on that camera, so a bit bleary. Caftan Wine and Netflix on the agenda.
  4. Woot Woot. I actually DID THAT with windows on the Victorian Warehouse. But I put four different models in the pack and "I" actually wanted the windows (damn I am such a detail person) for MY project. It worked very nicely as I took a really good photo of the windows and used that in place of them as a texture. Then on the fancier one I put the windows right over that texture. Even if they broke up --- it still LOOKED like windows. Although honestly they wouldn't break up for anyone on Firestorm -- unless of course someone had low graphics and super long draw distance by custom settings. And I never use single panes of glass or rarely glass as part of the actual window. BUT that being said when I finish this damnable TV camera (the database lost the one I had purchased long ago; it was primmy as all get out but still LOOKED good and I would have used it and couldn't find another to BUY) which is taking OH SO TOO LONG; so many pieces -- I will try redoing some many-paned windows on the sound stages (like small warehouses but with very detailed windows for that "inside" feel. I bet that would work fine as they are kinda marginal no matter what I did (well I didn't try the enlarged bounding box trick either). So THANK YOU! On my list. Long list. Will have champagne when I cross off the TV studio camera (getting close she says hopefully).
  5. LOL. Well happily my very early stuff is five years old now or so and mostly "gone". I always tested visually BUT I was using LOD4. Amazingly, one of my first creations has really pretty good LODs, a "Seen Better Days Barn" which is over at LEA6 out in the countryside. It is on my list to redo but mostly for better textures. It is "primmy" though LOL. Not sure what but I pretty much made it in many sections (see old; not smart then or at least LESS smart LOL). Anyway, I frequently remake things when I could just make from scratch easier. I think it is GOOD to see how much better we are over time.
  6. My whole world changed (well the appearance part anyway) when I went from 4 to 2 . But to your quoted comment. Yes, that is very bad. I don't have folks that I blog for that include those cards -- or have mesh that falls apart since I just toss those items as needed. BUT I did run across something a couple of months ago that was very bizarre. A notecard was included in with something (a group gift, a hunt item? Not sure) about how to change your setting to 4 -- that OLD notecard. I checked and the LODs were JUST FINE on the object. Why oh why the creator was still including that notecard I know not. Likely they had readymade boxes and never even thought about it. I had one big name house maker a few years ago, but I think he has disappeared now, that wanted me to retake the photos of his new release (there was a preview party) because I had "missed" things. And wanted me to turn my LODs up to 10 or whatever and make more photos. I refused, saying that if I couldn't see it at 4, then most folks wouldn't be able to anyway. GEEZ! AND Ouuu -- first time I ever made a table but I wanted this to stand out some. For those of us that do not make our own custom LODs (sorry, tried many times and did no better than the uploader "for MY stuff"; not arguing the point in general) having those vertices numbers will be GREAT if you forget what settings you uploaded at. You can simply rez on the beta grid, look in the build menu and check. Same if you are exporting something back to your hard drive. So woot there! I typically put that info in the object name but over on the beta grid it has a tendency NOT to stick with the name you give something. Not sure why. So I used that new feature today and it was helpful as I didn't have to retest!
  7. Wow, that makes MY two bottom level example seem like nothing. I HAD NO CLUE people were doing this! What a hornet's nest.
  8. But actually all a prospective buyer needed to do was TEST VISUALLY. I have been doing that for years. But it is nice to see those actual numbers of vertices etc -- we could never know that before. And the physics while we could look and see via the menu tools, this is much nicer. and let's face it -- it is simply "cool" LOL and as builders we don't GET a lot of cool stuff.
  9. You know as much as I appreciate all the work that the devs did on the LOD and physics visability I am pretty sure that it will mostly be used by builders, not consumers who -- over and over again demonstrate that they really don't care about quality. This is not me complaining, just a very obvious observation (sadly). Most folks don't even go look at the demos I painstakingly put out FOR THEM. They just buy from the Marketplace. That is actually an unfair statement so I take it back. I have no PROOF this is true, just a hefty suspicion :D. Event folks DO seem to care more, perhaps because the shop more and lots buy the landmarks to demos when I have those out -- so that is encouraging. I had a fairly interesting experience this last month as I was setting up the Machinima Open Studio Project. My criteria included LOD 2 friendly mesh. I have had my viewer set at 2 for maybe a couple of years now and life is SO MUCH more pleasant even though I have a hefty machine. I am guessing the machine is cooler and happier also. Anyway after making the infrastructure myself, I looked though my vast inventory of blog items. I pitch a lot after I blog anyway as I know there are things I will never use. Still LOTS of stuff. Of those items (some up to four years old and some still very good) I could only use about half due to LOD issues. There are a couple of creators that I used to feature. I like their work very much but after a time I just couldn't convince myself it was good to be promoting LOD 4 only mesh. But I still saved those things just in case I needed a close up (what can I say; film folk are odd :D). After I installed the new FS I checked some of that LOD 4 fall apart mesh. I knew that the download costs were WAY less than they should be, I just didn't know why. Well the creators had used the default for level 2 and had ZEROED OUT both level 3 and 4 (or however you want to designated the lowest LOD levels). OMG. No wonder they fall apart at two feet away. I on the other hand go in the opposite direction. I mostly likely make my items TOO long distance. The LODs do hold at a very long range BUT aside from the fact that I like to be able to see things "correctly" at a distance, having items that fall apart at a distance in an EVENT SETTING is SO not good. Since I try and keep the mesh density very low (now and then I walk on the dark side but not often) it seems to work well. Still, personally, I doubt that many folks will take the time to do their homework before buying. Just like very few bother to check their avatar complexity settings. But at least now they have the tools to do that homework. And a lot of builders seem VERY happy :D.
  10. The large majority of Second Life folks use Firestorm. For me and likely for most of the others from comments made on these forums -- it is not about performance, it is about FEATURES. There are dozens of FS feature that I use everyday and do NOT want to be without. When I had to use the Linden viewer briefly to upload complex mesh (apparently that isn't something we have to do from now on --- happily) it was oh so PAINFUL.
  11. There was another post on this today that seemed to say there were issue. I didn't really read as it didn't affect me but looking back in the posts might be a good idea
  12. I wanted to comment on this OLD original post, not the bickering :D. The OP has apparently left the building and there is really no surprise there. It is absolutely true that people can have great taste (in this case fashion sense) but not have the 3D and texturing skills. That said, and if that is the case, they DO need to have very deep pockets. There are plenty of excellent designers that design just for brands on a work for hire basis. Some design for several -- and hence the look that some brands are the same brand (which of course could also be the case but I am going with the "same mesh maker" idea). BUT (and it is a big one) these HIGHLY SKILLED clothing makers are not going to hook up (no pun intended) with a newbie. Maybe if there was a ton of up front money in the mix, but I doubt that was the case in this post. We see this a lot on the forums. New folks, big ideas, have no idea how SL actually works. Don't really want to WORK that hard etc. etc. etc. IF however someone came in that was a "real" designer (not just picking out photos from Google) and had plenty of money to spread around for all the OH SO MANY JOBS that need to be handled to have a BRAND and a shop in SL --- then they probably could make it happen. It is questionable at this point in SL's life-cycle if they could make any "big bucks", but for some folks the money isn't the thing -- it is the DREAM :D. So just in case any new folks with big dreams read this (cause I know most of you know it already) -- it takes TIME to understand Second Life. Think of it as moving to another country. You don't know the customs, how things work, etc. The same is true here. Don't expect to jump in and make your mark. It really doesn't happen. LEARN about SL before you make big plans. That will most assuredly work better for you.
  13. You need to wear the ALPHA for the feet if you are using just the feet with a classic body. It will have the same icon as the one in your list that says JUMO : Hair - Alpha You can also get full free bodies that are VERY nice and will improve your appearance. eBody has two free versions (regular and curvy) and altamura has a free body still also I believe (very thin gal so probably not good for your look anyway). $10 a month is a fair amount to pay for rent so that really shouldn't be a problem. Many places come without furniture of course because a lot of folks LIKE decorating and shopping :D. But there are still plenty with furniture. Good luck and know that we all struggeled when we are new. SL has a steep learning curve. You are doing fine.
  14. Also most of the time you can look in places and the store will be at or close to the top of the list. Not true in THIS CASE however. So a quick alternative if you do not know the creator's name (and most of the time we don't remember or I don't) you can search GROUPS will will most often have the group for that store as the top entry. From there you can find the creator (usually) and get to their profile to find their store. The Marketplace is another way to find places. It works well for most stores but the mesh body folks mostly don't sell on the Marketplace so that is out in this case. Example.
  15. If you own land you will likely be charged (or they will try and charge the gift giver) with the cost of the land (even $5 if it is a 512) since land is charged for the month PRECEEDING. So hopefully there is no land :D. I read somewhere here on the forums that the groups stayed until you left them, you just couldn't add any more --- BUT rules change ALL the time and we don't know so personally I would pick out the groups I need to or want to be in and keep those with one or two to spare since you might want a new one in the future. It is tricky downgrading and even more so when it isn't on your account. IF you have lindens you can cash them in and use the funds for another month or another year and they will be used FIRST to pay for your premium membership (before a credit card). But that may not be an option. TYPICALLY (no guarantees) you will get an email from Linden Lab stating that your membership is up and you need to pay and giving you a few more days to do so. This doesn't solve the charge on any land you might own. AND your email of course needs to be a good one. So as Rolig said, get everything you can get done, done. A good plan.
  16. just wanted to note that you need to DERENDER AND BLOCKLIST every thing you don't want to see permanently. So derendering the wall would do little good as you would have a floating house. THAT being said I have often (and painstakingly) derendered a whole house, floating blue globe (yep next to those often) and all the persons "stuff" in order to have a nice view. You can sometimes lasso a bunch of things at one time but often it is a piece by piece thing. This is available in third party viewers. Actually in the scheme of things this is definitely NOT the worst neighbor LOL. I have lived near so many that were uglier. Maybe just putting in a gate where the arbor is would work? And as suggested turning or rearranging on your land could certainly be a viable option.
  17. It is important to read the RULES of the Marketplace that you agreed to by opening a store. It actually makes it LESS likely that folks will buy from you. Anyone that isn't brand new anyway. So not a good plan.
  18. According to Dakota Linden on a thread about this last year, that is SO NOT WHAT TO DO with the new way the Marketplace works. Part is placement is based on how many times people BUY your product versus how many looked at it. So if you have words that don't obviously relate more folks that are NOT looking for you type of product will view it and your ratings will go down in the list. Sure someone who loves to keep track of threads, knows the one I am referring too. Not my thing :D. ALSO, since I know how many items I sell in relation to how many products are reviewed (even on the best sellers which rate very high in the Marketplace rankings) I would be EXTREMELY suspicious of all those five stars in two days. Add that to the complaint about not selling much and I think the OP is "gaming the game" which I really don't like.
  19. HOHO. BTW your artwork now has a place of glory in one of the art "rooms" at Machinima Open Studio Project. It isn't exactly where this photo shows, I switched the sign for the picture, but your have a minute of "fame" anyway. Happily the database didn't lose it along the way.
  20. To the OP: Just wondering how you could make such a VERY COMPLEX MESH (which will not be useful in Second Life anyway as too heavy) and NOT know about reversed normals. But Aquila's lovely animation let's other know how to fix so that is good. We ALL had this problem at some time but usually with a very SIMPLE object. Just saying *wink*.
  21. Well anyone that know any of the groups you are in can still likely find if you are online or a new alt could simply type "hi" in an IM and if they don't get a "message will be saved" message, they know you are online. Along with Lindal's very good suggestions, if it was ME and I REALLY was concerned, I would move to a small new parcel, tell all your friends you will be incommunicado for a few days and hide out to see if your stalker STILL finds you. When testing, it is always good to eliminate things until you get down to a very short list. Since there IS the ability built into viewers for friends to see where you are, it doesn't seem like a huge stretch that a hacker could adjust a viewer or make an ap so that NON-friends, without the OK to show you on their maps could be able to find you. It certainly seems easier than breaking into fortune five hundred companies -- and THAT happens. If that is the case, you are pretty much stuck. You COULD go around invisible LOL as a frustration for your stalker. Or retired you avatar for awhile until they get bored and stop looking for you. There really are no great alternatives.
  22. If you want to use it to control LoD, try to place those extra triangles or vertices along the axis that already has the largest dimension. That is one of the mistakes the maker of that book stack made (assuming LoD strengthening was the purpose). Actually I doubt I will use this info to "extend" a bounding box -- or certainly not very often as I rarely make something small like this with so much density. I was more interested in the way to adjust the physics model :D. And I NEVER include a shadow prim as part of the mesh. If I do add floor or wall shadows to an item it is usually because I need an extra prim for my old but still works great texture change script I wrote in a class (so not a script person) AND I almost always have a shadow on shadow off option in the scripting. Not a fan of cast shadows since I always have shadows on in the viewer. I found another book while looking through my inventory for decor that had one cube on an edge, just there -- which made even less sense than this example. So it is somewhat of a mystery what folks do to make things work (or not so much as the case may be :D). I often wonder at myself if I remake an old model (taking longer than it would to just make a new one from scratch but a good reminder of how practice does make you better) at some of the choices I made back then (insert head shaking emoticon here).
  23. Well then it sounds like a JIRA or support ticket might be in order. Good luck!
  24. So I did some experiments with some of the suggested ideas here and I did do the single vertices physics model for the triangle part of the model (I didn't try it with a cube but it might work for that too. We can maybe presume it would? Someone else can try that). It did work as suggested so far as the physics part. I did not need "solid" in order to get the physics mode with lone vertices to work ONLY on the vase. In this case it didn't really help the issue. I suspect that maybe making a few triangles a longer ways away might do it, but this IS sort of a "darker side" model LOL so just making the cage with less square would certainly be an option also. Here is how it looks. The one on the right I just used a hexagon without the extra vertices for the triangle. So this was a good thread and "I" learned some stuff anyway. So thanks all. I DO have an idea where this knowledge will help a bunch and it isn't on wired vases LOL. But that is MY secret. Others can find their own uses.
  25. Have you tried the official viewer of if using the official viewer then Firestorm. Support wont help you unless the issue is ON the official viewer and can be documented. Sorry, I have no clue other than try NOT using a proxy? I haven't used a proxy in maybe 25 years so very out of the loop on that :D.
