I came to the forums within a couple of days of rezzing. Because it made sense. Because hobby/geek/nerd/social groups all have forums.

The two most important things I got as a newbie, were firstly, a massive amount of help with my avi, which I could not have found anywhere else. And second, a bunch of rock solid geek friends who have stayed together now for several years. We may not interact that often in world or here, but we splintered off onto Discord, and socialise 24/7, (timezones adjusted).

Two massive gains for this newbie five years ago.

And I remember your arrival. :)  (That isn't true for most people who have arrived, but many noobs don't stick around all that long, or post, etc.) You're a great addition to this place.

What do you get by posting/reading here?

Sweet, sweet souls to torment for eternity.

Seriously though, I do ask myself that sometimes. However...

Mostly, what I get out of posting/reading is the knowledge sharing, the funnies and some interesting discussions (even if I choose not to participate).

Really? Is there more than one way to pronounce "Orwar"?

There are three subforums I check and respond to fairly regularly. Your Avatar (because that's the one I can most often help newbies), the Linden Homes one (because I am a staunch Bellisserian and that's where I keep track of events and stuff)  and this one (because it's where I'm most likely to learn something useful).

I recently gave up Reddit because of their policy changes around API, which meant giving up the SL subreddit, so I come here instead to see what's going on and watch people fight about minor details. As a bonus, the Lindens are better mods than the mods there.

Ugh yes, I quit Reddit for the same reason but r/secondlife was never as active as this forum anyway so I'm not really missing much. I don't think I ever responded more than a handful of times there.

It gives me a place to talk about Second Life. I don't think I have ever uttered "Second Life" to anyone in the real world and I also don't talk about SL in any other place on the internet.

The discussions I have here are also a lot different from what is normally discussed in Second Life.

I used to be like that until I almost had a literal coronary over osgrid drama in 2013. I still keep SL and RL very seperate (I'm vocal about using SL to get away from RL stresses) but it's pretty common for me to call bestie and say something along the lines of "you'll never believe what the fools over at BLABLAHBLAH are doing/saying" and that of course frequently refers to SL.

There is one correct way, and then there's all those ways in which people try and fail!

When you poke a stick into an anthill (fire ants are the best) the reaction is always the same, the ants come roiling out, looking to find and attack whatever disturbed their home.

😁

So..the poker with the stick are Trolls in the Forum?

Way back when I was a newbie, the dashboard page used to include 2 or 3 of the most recent forum posts.  I was intrigued.  The GD was hopping back then.  Largely unmoderated and people could post about whatever they felt like posting.  There were answers to lots of my questions about SL here. Also, there were incredibly dramatic flame wars.  More than that, there were lots of very interesting threads about SL and RL and how they differed and how they were the same. And there were the funny threads.  I loved it.  I made friends with people in the forums that I hung out with in world.

Then it became so toxic that I stopped having fun.   My first av suffered her first heartbreak and I withdrew.  I couldn't bear to be reminded of how it used to be and so my first av stopped logging in.  I started using my first alt as my primary self and retired the first av.  My first av stopped posting in the forums.  I found a new crowd of people to hang out with in world and none of them posted in the forums.  I still kept in touch with my old friends here in a private thread that lasted a few years until it maxed out the number of posts allowed and it broke.  I would still pop in to the GD and read the first page worth of topics every once in a while. After the private thread broke I started posting here again.

Then in 2020 I took my first ever break from SL after 11 years of almost daily immersion.  It started out as a temporary leave due to lack of access for 5 months after a geographic relocation.  But it seems that was long enough for me to rediscover the real world.  Nowadays I login inworld once or twice every couple of months and I read  the forums more often, about once a week or so.

Why?  "Uh, I don't know, the wind just kinda pushed me this way"

Everything you wrote in this post... yes. I know several of us experienced the same thing, to one degree or another.

This place was so vibrant at one time, then it changed but there are ghost-whisps of its former self, and sometimes I think some of us return to re-experience what was. I don't mean to sound so maudlin, but know of no other way to phrase it.

Reddit Second Life is dead and there really isn't a good alternative anywhere else.

So I come here to share photos of my characters and my experiences living in this weird, wacky virtual world. And in doing so, I also get to read about the experiences of others and how they interpret this world differently from me. Seeing such a wide variety of unique avatars is always a pleasure, and sometimes they inspire me to A) try to up my photography/avatar game a little bit, and B) take notes so I can emulate their fashion sense.

That's largely what I get out of this place.

"What do you get from [the SL Forums]?" I innocently (? really?) put forth. This last page has given me further insight into when Canadians get a little bit miffed (they end in 13 attempts to apologize). There is also the errant white knight off on a quest no one requested. So international drama, math and statistics, sociology, anthropology (not to mention clinical psychology) and so much more! See, these really are interesting places to post about SL of course.
