That's a very broad question. I have...I dunno, a few hundred skins maybe.

What type of skin are you looking for? Human vs. Fantasy? 

What type of features are you interested in? How old do you want to be? What tones are you looking for?

How much do you want to spend? 

On and on and on...

just really the best, popular, detailed human skin really.. nothing to detailed.

Best is verrrrrrry subjective. There are so many different skin stores and styles out there. 

This is also going to vary quite heavily depending on what head you're purchasing a skin for.

You can start by checking out some of the more popular stores, maybe? Check out The Skinnery, 7 Deadly Skins, Velour, DeeTaleZ, Glam Affair, Session, Not Found, Bold & Beauty, Ives Beauty, etc.

OK, so no particular ethnicity or tone, no particular mesh head or body you're wanting it to fit, you just want to know what 'everyone else' is wearing, right? Well, WOW and 7DS are still catering for the freebie crowd so probably them. 'Best', 'popular' and 'detailed but not too detailed' (?) aren't necessarily overlapping categories. I see a lot of faces being made for Velour body skins so I guess that's what the fashionistas are wearing, but yeah, apart from that no idea.

why is everyone so dramatic. It wasnt that hard of a question, I just wanted brands of good skins. that was it, literally.

I understand what you are saying. BUT... you didn't ask for a list of good skin makers. You asked for the BEST.  So... as Colleen said... welcome to the SL Forum. People are trying to be helpful not dramatic.

For me YS&YS is the best skin... because they make a skin I like. I also think Plastik []TRAP[] makes great skins... but they are all fantasy skins. So, which is best for you? Everyone was trying to figure out what you wanted so they could give it to you. You miss read the room and probably the complexity of SL, which we see lots of noobs do.

Male or female? For which head? Which ethnicity?

I really like Nar Mattaru and DeeTaleZ for great pale skins for Evo X but that does not help you if you are looking for something darker. Velour is where everyone seems to go to for body skins these days.

I like 7DS like many folks, but I sometimes mix and match with freebie/group stuff from other makers if I want something different or funky. As long as it's BoM I can work with whatever, as long as it gives me a desired result. 

This is one of my favorite freebie skins. Works with Lelutka and one other head maker in EvoX mode, I love it! The skin part fits well with most bodies; I prefer Maitreya.

You said best and newest... so let's do it! Starting from scratch, it's gonna cost in the L$8000 ballpark if you pay full prices.

You don't start with skin. You start with head, then shape, head skin, eye color, and body skin. Then fine tune with brows, lashes, hair, skin enhancers (e.g. freckles), and makeup.

The newest heads are HD and BOM. I am currently going with LeLutka EvoX (Lilly). There are other comparable heads but LeLutka rules the creator school at present (as evidenced by the last SkinFaire). If you can't edit shapes, learn to edit shapes. I either tweak the shape that comes with the head or buy a shape for that head, then tweak that. Always buy shape based on how the face looks then edit the body shape to your liking. Editing body shape is easy once you figure out the editor. Skin alone does not determine what you will look like... it is always a combo of head, shape, skin, and eyes.

Now get skin for your head. Sometimes a shape comes with skin. You buy the head skin first, then match a body skin to it. Matching body skin is easy... its just matching the tone. When you are shopping for head skin and trying demos, make sure you are doing it with the eye color you want, as eye color is huge in determining final look.

For skin creators, I like them all but always check out Glam Affair, The Skinnery, 7 Deadly Skins, DeeTaleZ, and Enfer Sombre. It is possible that you can get a great skin on sale. Don't be in a hurry.

One more recent development is Velour. They make body skin and makeup and several head skin creators are using their color palette. The picture below is me with a Glam Affair head skin in the Velour Porcelain tone. The body is Maitreya (with petite add on) and a Velour Venus Porcelain/Skinny skin. Good luck!

This is a great idea! I would also recommend to do that.

My favorites at the moment are Glam Affair and Itgirls.

But as others have said already it always depends on one's personal taste and what kind of look you are trying to achieve 🙂

Well worth checking out Amara Beauty. They do amazing skins and are one of the best at making mouths that look good rather than awkward. Their skins are almost flawless. That is possibly their only flaw - they can look a bit doll-like, though it is possible to add your own imperfections.

However, I wear skins from DS'Elles, which doesn't often get a mention in these kinds of chats, but is one of the best makers out there. I'm currently wearing 'Olga' from DS'Elles. Give it a try.

(Results should not  be judged by reference to my current forum profile photo by the way - that's not my SL Avatar! That's Aughra from Dark Crystal. Everyone else was going for muppets. It's a long story.)
