  1. I don't think this is Second Life's doing. Sounds more like your computer has decided not to use your dedicated GPU for the application. Check the Ati settings and see if there is any way to specify what card to use for what application. Second Life not recognising your GPU just affects the graphics settings in the viewer.
  2. It doesn't matter that it doesn't detect it - just login and set the graphics settings as suits your GPU i.e. looks good and doesn't slow it down too much.

I'm not saying v2 doesn't have a host of other problems, or that "basic" mode isn't a mind numbing disaster (and I've looked at what it does, there's no reason the viewer shouldn't be able to hot swap those settings, instead of requiring a close)... The way that the 'Basic' mode was written was quick and easy, and as a result does not allow for hot swapping. It was a sensible use of resources, and I'm sure we'll be seeing it's second incarnation soon.

  5. @Kurama - it looks like something has happenned recently with regard to the order in which textures are retrieved from the servers. I have noticed recently that many more textures for the sim seem to be loading before the avatar textures.
  6. Some Mac users do seem to be having some problems with the latest builds - if you do please raise or add to a Jira if it is repeatable. I have noticed in the past that Mac users do tend to get a rough deal (I am a Windows user fortunately), presumably LL's testing on Macs is not as thorough.
  7. Viewer 2 runs fine on a single core Intel PC with an 8800GT (on Windows XP) as well. Viewer 2 does fall behind Viewer 1 on Intel integrated graphics though, and sadly many computers (including many sold as all-purpose) still rely on them. I do know that LL has bought a number of low-spec machines to try to address these problems and some features such as 'opaque water' have helped a lot.
  8. Brandon Tolwen wrote: Hi i just want to say i love second life ok? But are you guys working on upgrades for servers such as lag and to make the game run better on macbook pro graphics? i dont know a whole lot about servers and everything but can you make sure the right people see this comment! secondlife has great potential it just has to be shown to the world through ads. but thats the not the point the point is second life has kinda gone down the tube latley and i want to see it back on its feet its the best virtual online ever! please keep improving! Brandon Brandon - issues relating to specific computers is more related to the work of the Second Life Viewer team - but the answer for specific improvements for Macbooks is likely to be 'no'. Are you sure any problems you have are not computer-related? Generally the lag situation is improving in sl (though there are exceptions and it has it's bad days).
  9. As there would be very little difference in a 64-bit viewer at the moment, I believe the efforts of their technical teams are better directed at addressing some of the other problems in SL.
  10. I don't know, but maybe this has been disabled as part of the work towards region-specific windlight settings.
  11. What exactly has this got to do with the Beta version of Viewer 2 though?

This is what I ger for being such a big supporter of the SL viewer. No good deed goes unpunished. Try reinstalling and clearing cache. If that does not work please raise an issue in the JIRA with system specs (if you can get to the login screen).

Darius Vayandar wrote: /me bangs head on desk having just been told he wasted 130 bucks on the new card in the last post.... on a side note, i reduced my graphics to low and put the draw distance to 240 and now i have 30 fps where i had around 25 before leliel is correct I'm afraid - for Second Life there will be little or no difference between them. Try whacking DD down to 128 when just walking around - you can always slide it up again when at sims where you have already cached much of the content e.g. your home.
  16. "Snowstorm is the name of the team responsible for coordinating development and integration of the Second Life Viewer, and for engaging the open source development community in its evolution." - see https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Project_Snowstorm. Snowstorm is not the only one of LL's teams working on developing the viewer. Other teams also add in developments, especially the one responsible for social matters.
  17. Monti Messmer wrote: No matter which manufacturer, a small version of SL could run on the newest mobiles. No it can't. One day it may do when mobile devices become more powerful, but not now. There are netbooks that can run sl - but forget it with phones and tablets, no matter how many cores they have.
  18. Thanks Oskar. I see the latest Blue Steel rollout contains 'Removed some dead/unused code inventory HTTP code'. I usually find this is quickly followed by a 'Ahhh, so that is what that bit of code did' moment.:smileyhappy:
  19. Marigold Devin wrote: I believe Phoenix Firestorm is a very user friendly viewer, which I have yet to try, and if you are already familiar with the interface that comes with Viewer 2.5, you might wish to instal that. And there are support groups inworld who will give you further advice regarding Phoenix (please take a look at my profile, at the groups list for the Phoenix Viewer Support; click on that and you can opt to join, its open enrolment). Please note that Firestorm is currently in the early stages of development, and still has many more bugs than any of the official viewers or other TPVs and should only be used by users willing to accept that.
  20. Yoki Enoch wrote: Most other viewers are far better at handling pretty much anything that Viewer 2.x handles or doesn't handle. Viewer 2.x was perhaps the most poorly designed viewer to have ever come into existence for use in SL. Just read the other posts here - nothing but problems people are having with Viewer 2.x. Or that could just be because those who have problems are more likely to be posting on this type of thread.
  21. Really something like running OpenSim on your own computer would be the best way to build something like that (it uses the same build tools and objects as SL), especially if you expect it to take a while. If you are demoing it to possible clients you can then import the resulting build into SecondLife and let people login and look it over.
  22. They are now saying this is not fixed in 2.5.2, but it is fixed in 2.6 (which may explain why Kirstens latest is working fine). Maybe it's third time lucky.:smileyhappy:
  23. Hakuoro Ohmai wrote: There's a very long list of things i hate about this new viewer, but what seems to annoy me the most is the fact that i can't even view someones profile, even my own. Edit: oh, and i forgot to mention i'm running SL on ubuntu. If you are gettig an SSL error I am told that will be fixed in Viewer 2.6, but I was also told it was fixed in Viewer 2.5.1 and 2.5.2:smileyhappy:. Here is the relevant JIRA.
  24. I would suggest that anyone who has concerns about this downloads the proposed Viewer 2.6.0 Beta at the link that Daniel posted. This basic viewer is being produced because many new users do find Viewer 2 confusing - this virtual world is much more complex that many others. Once you need or want to do other stuff you get pointed in the direction of the 'Advanced' viewer - and hopefully this mode will be developed to show new residents that they can do more but they need to switch to 'Advanced' mode.
  25. All restarts have been completed - if you are having problems I suggest you yell, in the nicest way.:smileyhappy:
