  1. There is a lot of truth in that Gavin. And the game the new CEO is most famously associated with - The Sims Online - made it accessible to a "wide, family oriented audience" Also a couple of others: Bring in social gamers from Facebook and other places - as they spend the big money. Provide some way of accessing SL through tablets and other mobile devices as that is clearly where a lot of potential users will be moving to.
  2. Hitomi, I couldn't believe it myself, but: http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1717563 It seems to be exactly as Tali described. True, it isn't technically your browser history. Close enough, though! Thanks for the link Casey. It behaves exactly as I would expect it would - it will log every time you go to a web-page with a 'Facebook Connect' button on it. Yes, these are becoming more commonplace but are still on only a very small fraction of pages on the web and are often related to news, blogs, shopping and gaming sites. I just didn't want people getting the idea that there is something that will download your entire browser history back to Facebook as soon as you visit a profile page.
  3. And even better, the instant you open someone's web based profile, the Facebook widget is sending your browser history to Facebook, even if you are not a Facebook member and have never visited their site. All it takes is for you to have visited a site with Facebook Connect, which these days basically means, "you visited a web site." Once your computer has a Facebook Connect or Facebook cookie in it, that innocent little "Like This" button whooshes up your browser history and all sorts of other data as soon as you start loading the page. No it doesn't - it just lodges a cookie on your computer saying you visited that page. That helps Facebook with targeted advertising (love it or hate it). It does not send your browser history to Facebook!
  4. WOW (again) – I am truly amazed at so many people making so many comments and jirs’a, I honestly didn’t think any one used Viewer 2 except for the poor newbees that had it forced on them. We all know from past experiences that the Lindens never read or take any notice of these complaints and will continue to steam roller through what ever they want. I have raised several JIRAs - all have been resolved (except my current one on SSL handshake errors that is in the process of them fixing, hopefully). One thing that sometimes happens is that they fail to close completed JIRA items.
  5. From what I see right now, the populace is in rebellion stage, with a significant number of customers choosing exit strategy. The majority never read the forums or the blogs and they accept (even with whinges) what LL throws at them - they come inworld to play, and they will until they get bored or SL folds.
  6. Thanks Gavin - suddenly realised my script blocker was blocking it.
  7. And as for revealing my groups or picks -- yes, they are revealed, to anyone who any SL resident who bothers to sign in (on the web page). They are revealed on the Web, and in Facebook, and who knows where else. I'm not seeing 'groups' or 'picks' for myself or my testing alt in 'my.secondlife.com' when logged in - maybe I am not doing it right. On a positive note my ad blocker was already blocking LL's advertisements.
  8. A lot of free account users put an awful lot into the second life economy; buying or earning Lindens, buying products and renting land. I fail to follow your logic.
  9. Don't worry - no one is going to make you log in to twitter or facebook, and you have no need to link your sl profile with any external app unless you really want to. Mike's very reasonable concern is about the sudden revelation of the textual part (but not your groups or picks) of your second life profile to search engines. LL really should have announced this before carrying it out.
  10. The SSL handshake error was supposed to have been fixed in Beta 2 but instead seems to have reappeared for a whole new bunch of users, including someMac users. The Lindens are aware and are trying to fix it - see STORM-927 for more details.
  11. Thanks for that response Nelson - much appreciated.
  12. they seemed to reorganise what they chose to show us in Q2 2010 - if you want to see the old stats and see what is now missing see this post. In that post they said 'We are eager to hear what information and analysis you would like to see about the Second Life economy that would help your business'. Since then they have quietly dropped the following figures that would surely prove to be useful indicators: Total value of user-to-user transactions Total L$ held by residents Maybe these figures could be re-instated to give businesses a better understanding of how the economy is doing.
  13. Fredrik - even if you logged users in to OpenID at login time every subsequent call to open a web profile is taking too long. Your team have been working on web profiles for a very long time - I am surprised that the final product has so much that still needs to be corrected.
  14. Am not sure that reporting them to a fictitious department will help much!
  15. Maeve - there are many reasons why you may be experienceing this but it sounds like it may be computer-related. Generally lag and 'greyness' has reduced in the last year in sl. But here are a few practical things you can try: - Clear your cache - Make sure you have 'HTTP textures' enabled in Imprudence (and if you hadn't turn it on and clear the cache again) - Try another viewer - doesn't have to be Viewer 2 - just try another 1.* TPV viewer - Try another computer - or use your computer at a friend's house if it is portable Hope some of this may help.
  16. Darren, The web profiles work was not done by Q Linden's area - it was done by another (the SOCIAL team). Q's area is much more open than many other areas of LL and you can find out more and even attend meetings that they hold - see details here.
  17. My concerns are less associated with privacy, but more to do with those of us on low bandwidth connections - waiting 10-15 seconds to see a profile is not very good.
  18. I also discount those with closed minds who don't realise we have to work with what LL gives us.
  19. I'm only getting 2 of 3 fav bar entries in the logon drop down. Anyone else observing this? try moving them in your 'favorites' list - when I did that they all appeared!
  20. I agree David - that does explain a lot about why the interface feels intuitive or not. Making one suitable for both 'Western' and East Asian residents will always prove difficult. This is why it is better we have choice in interface design.
  21. Have you changed the aspect ratio of the picks pictures again? All my pictures seems horizontally squeezed. In the new web profiles the ratio is 1:1 - previously it was often 4:3.
  22. Jacob - the web profiles are produced by the Social team not the Viewer 2 team - what is happenning is a strategic decision by LL to put some Viewer 2 content on the web. In theory it is a good idea, but not when it messes up what can be done in the Viewer as we are seeing here.
  23. You can already do this to some extent by just storing them in the contents of a prim (one shaped and textured like a wardrobe would be good ). There are some limitations based on the object's permissions - but you should find it works with most things. Oh, and don't blame me if you suddenly find that SL ate your wardrobe. I'm sure there must be a link about it somewhere - maybe someone else can help.
  24. The SSL Handshake error and a problem with sudden drop in FPS are both covered in this Viewer 2 forum thread.
  25. I myself do not mind the web based profile for my PERSONAL use like for updating. But I am not a fan of Facebook at all...and it is not a good move to go that direction, not unless we are catering to all the teeny-boppers that are Facebook addicts (sorry if I offended those facebook lovers that are not teeny-boppers). Facebook is generally used by older people - Habbo or MySpace (less popular now) or a music sharing social network is more often the choice of teenagers.
