  1. It is easier (faster) to download a small texture. There ARE however legitimate reasons for 2048 textures. We had them in Sansar long ago and for awhile there were even bigger textures (not my time there). If you put ALL the texutures for a small house on ONE 2048 texture plane the server only needs to make ONE trip instead of -- well it could be 20 depending on how people build. The real issue in my mind is that folks will just assume that a 2048 texture is BETTER and NEEDED when it is not. Not a whole lot different than the match head forum post LONG ago that was a 1024 texture (yes really). So I for one am happy that LL will be charging for the bigger textures as that might have people thinking if they really NEED that big texture.
  2. I can remember going to a sim that hosted all the Money Tree listings (and there were lots) and seeing "mirrors" and they were damned impressive. They apparently took a screenshot of your avatar and superimposed it on in reverse on the mirror prim (it was only prims back then). No, there wasn't any movement but that had to bee like 17 years ago or so.
  3. Just sticking this in for other folks that might be reading. I made it when Belli first opened. I have moved OH SO MANY TIMES (both home and shops) . https://chicatphilsplace.blogspot.com/2019/05/home-and-garden-backups.html
  4. I haven't really followed this thread other than see the snippets roll but and I am guessing it IS about the money (and hopefully not a health issue). That being said it could also have been blowback from the Medium article and "investors" who did not want to be linked to SL. Just saying.
  5. Unfortunately I have had NON FLAT since I came out of the pod (lots of computer practice with customer files so my norm). Also made a new "my clothes" and "my objects" folders as advised. None of it has helped. The database does not and has never LIKED ME :D. "It is what it is". After the first major loss of my whole Home and Garden folder when I was about TWO, I have learned to sigh and move on.
  6. Well even though the database has deleted many thousands of items "for me" and "on its own" I pretty much have everything I NEED and favorite things that are gone are GONE. I do keep a a fairly NEAT inventory at around 70K (this includes all my store stuff and many copies of some things). This winter I went through all my clothing and accessories and hair (avatar stuff) and deleted about 10K of items that I knew I would never use --- this after seldom keeping items that I blog other than specialty things. I got really tired of looking through the sales ads and seeing the same thing over and over and over. This to blog -- not for personal use. So now I seldom look at ads and rarely feature event items other than the work of a handful of non BlogOtex creators that hand deliver me items. Basically I just got bored after well over a decade of events. If I really NEED something (oh so rarely) I look on the Marketplace or a favorite store or I just make it. I still feature non-monthly events like Shop and Hop and Fantasy Faire but no longer go info "look what I found at XYZ event posts. So my inventory is as full as I need it to be. PS. My little remodeled 1943 house and my closets follow those same urges in our corporeal world.
  7. Well I can't say I am surprised by the input. Thanks.
  8. I haven't seen any chatter about the new Seraphim shopping hud. Wondering if folks are using it and what they think. I have a very full inventory so not a big shopper these days. Just curious if this is REALLY the "next big thing" in SL :D.
  9. Not the price you paid but the SIZE of the plot. https://secondlife.com/land/pricing#:~:text=The Land Use Fee (also, land use fees are applied. Make sure you understand before purchasing :D. If you are a regular Premium Member you get a 1024 lot (or anything that makes up that amount) with NO tier. A premium Plus member gets 2048 tier free (well it is included in the PP package :D.
  10. Adding on to this as I found a good example of what I was taking about via the TOS changes. This I found because a friend asked me to read the TOS before he signed up :D. I deleted the company name. This is VERY COMMON for several years.
  11. Welllllll --- First off it would be good to look at the builds that you plan to use in the sim and pretty much lay out the project in a sandbox. Second you will likely get more for your land impact allowance than you expect now that the land impact rules have changed recently and that should help. Thirdly if you community grows it is likely that you will need to move no matter what you do (aside from the half sim choice) so keep that in mind. A quarter sim equates to 8 2048 plots. Assuming you want public areas, roads, paths, buffers from the neighbors etc that might be closer to a 1024 plot per renter. Is that big enough for your builds? Would that leave enough leftover land impact for folks to decorate with? I have had all three of your choices as well as a full 20K sim (my half sim was just a 20K though) and personally I would pick the homestead where you actually have control over your vision. You could also if needed pare down the plots to 6 rentals. Right now there is a real glut of land and rentals so making things "a good deal" is likely a necessary besides being altruistic. I hope you have a great time with your project.!!!!!
  12. I am guessing NOT since the Marketplace listed my marijuana plant as A even after I named it CBD.
  13. That "could" be it but I have found several instances where that text was in a web TOS where that was NOT the case ^^. Linden Lab has never to my knowledge pointed out the changes (and there actually HAVE been online companies that have -- amazingly). When the TOS changed in 2013 there was someone (I am guessing a lawyer or legal student) who went through the complete TOS and highlighted ALL the changes and differences and even the movement of paragraphs in color (red and yellow if I remember correctly) so that anyone referencing their document could easily see. That MAY still be there on the web. My blog still has all the links to that 2013 debacle up online. In 2013 there were lots of folks (well at least vocal ones) that did NOT log in before reading. And some never logged in again because the agreement in that TOS negated the contracts they had in real life with other folks. I knew some of those back then -- one a writer for a magazine and one a professional "mesher" -- both making a living at those things in the brick and mortar world. So likely I am a little less trusting than some folks LOL. I logged in but only uploaded one texture for a whole year and no mesh. I spent most of my time that year in Opensim. And the shifty stuff with Tilia where you could agree without putting in any check mark had me believing that changes could be made without our actual knowledge. Very true that probably 95 percent of folk never read what they sign. No argument there !!! But I will still be checking -- especially the ***** text whish is "supposed" to be addressed. Will see. Now and then here the populous gets a few things to happen. Not often for sure. It is NOT really "our" grid :D. I accept that. And all that thinking has me awake now LOL.
  14. Agreed that the TOS hasn't changed in two years according to the date on the Terms and Condition's page. The ***** rules were last edited in 2012. https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Clarification_of_policy_disallowing_ageplay BUT if I am remembering correctly (I do actually READ THE TOS) there was verbiage added like so many places that says they don't need to inform us of changes it is up to US to notice and logging in means we accept (without clicking the "I accept" button). For THAT reason I have been checking fairly regularly to SEE if the date has change on either of those documents. It was SAID that the ***** rules would be addressed (not sure of the exact statement but leading folks to believe it would be changed). So NOT disagreeing really but it is likely that rules may be changed without the obviousness of the "by clicking I agree and can log in" method of 2013 which cause a heck of a backlash. ACTUALLY there was a lot of very small print with no check box on some of the TILIA agreements for awhile (not sure about now). So don't trust that "they have to let us know" idea LOL.
  15. This was discussed before and you might be able to find that thread. I as understand it once your linden dollars are sold and become USD they are "real money" and considered income. You get a receipt from Tilia via email for your files. That in theory is "income" no matter what you do with it. You do not need for it to be sent to PayPal before it has that status. So paying any bills that are part of your business would normally be tax deductible. On the OTHER hand if you pay RENT in LINDEN DOLLARS that is a business expense before you turn your "game tokens" into USD. If you are making enough USD profit that this matters then obviously getting some advice from a tax person would be a good idea. Good luck.
  16. That was MY day. I did some and put notes on the Marketplace that these were the NEW li numbers. Some things were close and folks probably wouldn't care. Lots of things were very low anyway. But unfortunately while I THOUGHT I wouldn't have too many vendor pictures to change I did have quite a few older ones. I just "fudged" out the old number and put in the new and uploaded. I found one landmark error and one item that somehow was no longer on the Marketplace and fixed that. I hope to finish tomorrow. For the folks that have all matching vendor photos with LI numbers it will be a nightmare OR they can just put a note saying "these are the old numbers --- new LI is less". I can understand that also LOL. I do have more "prims" to use now so that's a plus.
  17. As it has been said some objects will stay the same. One land impact items will all still be one land impact (however some may have lower download weights so that you could NOW link two and still be under the 1.5 it takes to boost the li to two. Some larger items (especially houses that are made in many pieces (windows - doors, lighting and separate walls for example) may not change at all since ONE of the "costs" of land impact is how many pieces are in a build. Typical houses and complex furniture (or let's be honest even heavy mesh) will be the biggest beneficiary of this. I got about 140 li reduced on my 2048 store plot. I am guessing most of that is in the "roleplay" big builds area since a lot of my things were already low LI. Off to check that. Probably important to emphasize that not all creators will be changing their Marketplace numbers OR redoing all the vendor photos if those had LI listed (happily mine are completely plain now but for logo --- woot). SO when you are buying it will be even more important to make sure LI is correct if you care.
  18. This is the OLD interface but the the idea no doubt translates over to the new (or maybe you are still using the old LOL). You can bake to MULTIPLE texture planes from one mesh object. Typically (for me) dividing the build into two or three parts (main - roof- base and stairs for example) works best but this will work even on ONE single mesh building. If yours is a simple one that will do it. I typically bake to 2048 and let the uploader resize. There was a comment just now on another thread saying that resizing down to 1024 works best. A few of us did a LOT of testing on this some time back and discovered that it depends a LOT on your software and the settings within that but MOST often letting the uploader do it is best. So I advise checking that out for yourself to see what works best FOR YOU. For me -- a small but fairly ocmplex house would be three to five textures uploades. Your simple house could easily be 3 and hopefully still look good. It will ALSO depend on the texture you are putting on things. Ones that need lots of detail are going to be tricky :D.
  19. I had that same issue on STRAND a year ago. Never got fixed. This on NO MODIFY (but could change with hud so maybe that counts) bushes mostly and ONLY on SOME bushes, not others of the exact same variety. It got so frustrating I just left the rental sim. NOTE that I didn't have any issue with this on my mainland half sim OR "now" on a different rental plot. Just throwing that out there to add to this thread.
  20. OK. That's a good example. I know of no way to "fix" that. You can always test on the beta grid. Some creators use four textures in order to get things clear. You can make a comment in the new "jira". My personal experience isn't showing what you are seeing. I use FS and usually 1024 textures (usually one per furniture object). Some clothing creators use FOUR 1024 textures on a pair of pants. If you are adding your textures to a template garment that wouldn't be a "fix". Hopefully someone else has an idea. Here is where you can make a comment etc. now. PS. In order to report an issue in the the portal you need to be able to have it happen on the current Linden viewer. https://feedback.secondlife.com/?_gl=1*jxjvhy*_ga*MjgyMTEzMzA0LjE2MjEzNzU1NjA.*_ga_T7G7P6DCEC*MTcxMDM1MDQ1NS40MDkwLjEuMTcxMDM1MDc0OC4wLjAuMA..*_fplc*NWZ4S1NiT2RMOVF6alUybjM5R0NSMUdROU9FS3VhJTJCQmJ3WTM5QVM0U1FiNFpKWjFBUnhzMGI1aGVzOU9WTXVQYnNnQTVyeFJ2NmRtWjclMkZrSDNyNkd1YjJ5bmRlMHNkYVFCS3dxbVg4SlgwQUhSb2VFcFM5VmxsU2JFYzZmUSUzRCUzRA.. WOW that's a long link.
  21. Well your example look exactly the same to me on the web. Here's the deal. The uploader takes a png or tga and turns it into a jpeg (jpeg2000 I think ) . So the quality will always be a bit lower. Nothing you can do about that except use finer defined textures to start with. I just uploaded a bunch of textures and they uploaded as "normal". Now what you WANT and what you get may be very different. You can use a larger texture plane but then you end up with laggy creations which isn't good either. So basically there IS no solution. There have been folks in the past that put have used a 1024 texture on a MATCH HEAD (not even a whole match) and that is a REALLY BAD IDEA. The forum post wen ton for a long time (long long long ago).
  22. IF the gestures have you as an owner, you MIGHT be able to put them in a box and import the box which "might" included the gestures when opened. It worked that way going the other direction and I used to bulk upload my animations to OS that way. IF the gestures were made by someone else they may also be available here in SL with the same avatar as creator. IF they were "stolen" they may also be available here to purchase assuming the name of the gesture wasn't changed. Edit: Here is where you export your filled box: Then import it using BUILD> UPLOAD> IMPORT LINKSET Again, I don't think I ever tried importing FROM OS to SL so it may not work the same way. I have imported a linkset (house) from OS to SL and that worked fine.
  23. WAY too heavy a mesh. It looks like you either followed a "bad" (meant for a rendered picture and not game use) tutorial or you imported someone else's (legal now :D) mesh which was also meant for photography. Oh so many of the edge loops could disappear. Decimate is your friend but only up to a point and then things break apart badly. Better to THINK SIMPLY. Textures will help with the overall look inworld. Nothing that your bed was 223 land impact pretty much tells you that this isn't usable in SL and hopefully you were using the beta grid to test on as I am guessing the cost wasn't my typical 11 lindens per piece of furniture LOL. If you don't know how I suggest looking up how to "remove edge loops". Not hard, just a little time consuming. Also figure out how the LOD settings in the view can work for or against you and TEST what happens when you change them and view from a distance --- again on the beta grid where it won't cost you. And watch the physics cost as well as the triangles. Don't feel badly. We all had to learn and I don't know anyone who didn't do things "incorrectly" while they were learning :D. That bed even with all the wrinkles (decimated there would likely work OK if done carefully) should come in around 10 land impact or so with good LODs for most folks. Hopefully it will all work out well for you and think of you will have learned along the way!!!!
  24. The last statistics that I found easily are from 2021, It is probably good to note that these are PUBLIC regions and not the number of folks, schools, universities, corporations that are using the software which is suspected to be an equal amount. Those of course wouldn't be considered part of the "metaverse". I don't see how SL really can be defined as a "metaverse" as it is a closed platform. Sansar still has better tech in some ways (no people however) but again closed system. Just some info.
  25. The only MAINLAND that I know about with "private island" terraforming are the OLD "color sims" like Umber where I lived for awhile. Regular mainland is something like 4 meters up or down from the default. Aside from folks advertising that you can use advanced terraforming I haven't seen any way to tell. I think the color sims (as well as private islands) are 20 meters up or down. That is what is sticking in my mind anyway.
