That would make sense for California. CA is the only state that has a net loss for being part of the US. The rest of the country needs eachother to survive.

At least give me sawing off Florida? I don't remember the last presidential election where there wasn't at least some kind of WTF-ing about Florida, some degrees hotter than others. Plus: Florida man.

Totally in favor of eliminating the EC. Have been since I was much further to the right than I am now and it was last century.

Totally in favor of plain old majority rule.

And voting by computer.

And getting rid of the two party system, which majority rule could help.

So lets just say the EC does become a its own country and separates itself from the south and west. Who's going to buy your products or produce? We would no longer have an incentive to buy from you since you would like get undercut by other nations looking for our business. Being the most populous.

Florida was unfortunate. Their latin american community bought the notion sold by republicans that democrats are socialists. It's whatever. I still think it's trending left. Just not today.

?

"The EC does become a its own country..." The Electoral College? What?

And, ya know, that was a post made in jest. I thought that was fairly obvious both in syntax, word choice etc?

Ya sorry I misread your statement so mine doesn't make any sense.... mb. You had previously mentioned cutting off certain states so I thought you meant east coast....

This is as good a place as any to put this graphic that I just saw posted on a friend's blog. I wish more people understood these things and that they had questioning minds to pay attention to their own biases to see through crap, either presented on the news, social media, at the dinner table...

As for your other claims, go back and read what you wrote. You claimed that what I said was "inaccurate", i.e. that people criticized the electoral college because they felt it brought Trump. Whereas now that it is securing Biden's likely win, they are silent. And that is indeed the case. So you are contradicting yourself, not me.

If there were no electoral college nobody would even be wondering who won this election.

People complain most about the electoral college when it elects someone who's lost the popular vote. That doesn't appear to be happening right now.

Sometimes things are as simple as they seem?

The people calling for the reform of the electoral college last week generally thought Biden was likely to win, so I'm not really sure why they would stop now, and I don't expect them to. The reasons the electoral college is fundamentally flawed, stupid and indefensible haven't changed or gone away. The fact that we may be waiting a week for the people in Nevada who stop counting ballots around noon to decide an election where one candidate has a clear majority of the vote and more votes than any presidential candidate ever should make it even more obvious.

Here's an academic paper written at the end of 2019 (i.e. before COVID-19, the massive increase in mail-in ballots, etc.) It's fairly long and I haven't finished reading it myself. However, in the first couple of pages, for all intents and purposes the writer predicted exactly what's happening right now:

I doubt anything is going to change once the results are in.. Who ever wins it will more than likely stay the winner..

Out of all the investigations and hearings and whatever else they do in Washington.. They always seem to lead to nowhere land and nobody ever ends up going to jail or anything really.. they just seem like a place to burn tax payer dollars to make it seem like they are throwing the people a bone, like Hey look at me and what I'm doing for you?!! \o/

Just rip the damn tape off and lets get the show on the road already..

I am so worn out of the whole Hurry up and wait games..

Why shouldn’t it be straight popular vote?

Ah yes. Because majority (mob) rule always works so well. People are clearly always rational, critical thinkers that we can trust to make the right decisions.

As a straight white male, I support your initiative. Majority rule from now on. We'll fix this country!

Pesky fact: White males, straight or otherwise, only make up 31% of the American population.

Yeah, it's just too crazy. It's not like we have direct election of practically every other elected official in the country.

And ... wtf. How is a straight, simple majority less counting points than the EC? The EC is based on the majority of votes in a specific state!

How is that better than letting a person in Vermont's vote count as much as someone in California? Which is what a simple majority vote would do. Funny how this silly thing of "he who gets the most votes wins" works in other countries, while here we have to have that system, PLUS another one, which totally screws things up.

Simple majority also makes it easier to move away from the decayed and diseased party system. Me and George Washington are besties on that.

Well considering the EC was put in place by white male slave owners...that's all the explanation needed.
